Eight keyways are offered on the 35-157 Primus blank: C, CE, E, EF, F, FG, H and J. Pick the one that matches the keyway already stamped on your Primus cylinders, since a blank cut on the wrong keyway section will not enter the plug at all.

Primus is a restricted, patented keying system, and the 35-157 blank requires e-validation before it can be supplied. That means the order is tied to an authorized end user or dealer on record for the system, not sold over the counter to anyone who walks in. Property managers running a Primus system should order through whoever holds the key records for the building; the restriction is the whole point of the system, since it stops keys being duplicated at a hardware store.

Three things get chosen on the order: the keyway (C, CE, E, EF, F, FG, H or J), whether the keys are keyed different or keyed alike, and the key code. Keyed different is the standard setting, so each key operates its own cylinder. Choose keyed alike when several locks need to work off one key, and enter the key code from your key records so the cuts match the system already in the building.

It ships as a blank in the Primus classic standard bow, embossed on both sides, in sequence #1001. It still has to be cut to your bitting, and Primus blanks take a sidebar milling as well as the standard bitting, so cutting needs equipment set up for Primus rather than a standard duplicator.

A Primus key cut on the matching keyway section will operate a standard Schlage conventional cylinder of that keyway, because the sidebar milling is simply ignored by a cylinder that has no sidebar. It does not run the other way: a standard Schlage key will not turn a Primus cylinder, since the finger pins and sidebar are not lifted. That one-way behavior is why buildings often layer Primus on top of an existing Schlage system for master and control keys.
