Schlage 47804375-626 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Does the Schlage 47804375 indicator mount on the inside or the outside of the door?
Outside. This is the exterior half of the L Series Gen 2 indicator, so the LOCKED/UNLOCKED message faces the corridor and anyone approaching reads the status before touching the lever. If you need indication on the occupant side as well, that is a separate inside indicator, not this part.
2) I have Schlage L9040 locks with full escutcheon plates. Will this indicator fit them?
No. The 47804375 is built for sectional trim, meaning a rose behind the lever, and it will not mount on a lock dressed with a full escutcheon plate. For escutcheon openings you need the escutcheon version of the L Series Gen 2 indicator instead. Check what is on the door before ordering, because the lock function can be right and the trim style still wrong.
3) How does staff get into a locked restroom from the outside in an emergency with this Schlage indicator?
Emergency override is built into the outside trim and is operated with the emergency key screwdriver tool that ships with the indicator, Schlage 47285675. No cylinder or key is involved. Worth telling your janitorial and security staff where that tool lives, because it is the only way through from the corridor side.
4) Is this indicator trim durable enough for a high-traffic public restroom?
Tested and certified to ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 for both operational and security standards, and it is a commercial-duty part, not a residential one. That is the grade specified for airports, schools, healthcare and other heavy public traffic, so it is the right level for a restroom used all day.
5) Is the Schlage 47804375 the replacement for the discontinued L283-425 indicator?
Yes. The Gen 2 indicator supersedes L283-425, so if your facility standard sheet or an old order still calls out L283-425, this is what you order now in its place.
6) Can you tell whether the lock is occupied from down the hallway?
That is the point of the design. The viewing window wraps three sides of the lock for a patented 180 degree read, so the status is legible at an angle and from across the room rather than only from straight on. It also sits high on the trim, which is what makes it quick to scan door by door during a lockdown sweep.
7) Will a colorblind occupant be able to read the LOCKED/UNLOCKED status?
The large window uses red and white message backgrounds specifically so the indication reads for colorblind users, and the state is spelled out in words rather than signalled by color alone. For institutional specs that call for status you can read without relying on color discrimination, this covers it.
8) Can I match the Schlage L Series indicator to the lever trim already on my other doors?
Twelve BHMA finishes are available: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 629 bright stainless, 630 satin stainless and 643E aged bronze. Pull the finish code off the existing hardware and order the same number; 626 and 630 are the two most common on commercial openings.
