No. The kit is indicator trim only, the outside occupancy indicator for a privacy mortise lock. The lock body and the levers are not included, so you are buying this to add or replace indication on a lock you already have hung. Order the lock and 06 levers separately if you are starting from bare.
2) Can I replace an L283-442.06 indicator with this one?
Yes. This is the Gen 2 indicator and it replaces the L283-442.06_ series indicator directly. Same application, privacy with coin turn on 06N trim, with the larger three-sided window in place of the older flat window.
3) Is this Schlage indicator trim rated for commercial traffic in a school or hospital?

5) What message does the Schlage OS-OCC indicator show, and can staff read it from a distance?
It reads OCCUPIED or VACANT, and the window wraps three sides of the lock for 180 degree visibility, so status is readable from across the room rather than only head-on at the door. It also sits high on the trim, which is the point of the high-mount placement, a lockdown sweep can clear a room from the corridor. The backgrounds are red and white so colorblind staff read it by contrast and text, not color alone.
6) Is this the inside or the outside indicator for the privacy lock?
Outside. The 47860028 is the OS, outside, occupancy indicator, the one people in the corridor read before they try the door. If you need indication on the room side as well, that is a separate inside indicator part.
7) What finishes does the Schlage OS-OCC indicator come in to match my existing L Series trim?

8) Can I standardize a whole floor of restrooms on this indicator if the doors already have L Series privacy locks?
If those doors are running L/LV9040 or L/LV9440 privacy locks with 06N escutcheon trim and a coin turn, yes, one part number covers the fleet and you pick a single finish across the floor. Where a door has different trim or a thumbturn instead of a coin turn, that opening needs a different indicator, so walk the doors and count trim types before you place a bulk order.
