Schlage ALX Series Closed Lever, Saturn Lever Design

It describes the shape of the lever end. On a closed lever the return curves back and meets the rose, so there is no free end sticking out. Open designs leave that end unattached. The closed return is what specifiers are asking for when they call out a returned lever, because a carried box, a cart or a jacket sleeve has nothing to hook on the way past. Saturn is the lever style within Schlage's ALX family.

Ten finishes: 605 Bright Brass, 606 Satin Brass, 609 Antique Brass, 612 Satin Bronze, 613 Oil Rubbed Bronze, 619 Satin Nickel, 622 Matte Black, 625 Bright Chrome, 626 Satin Chrome, and 643E Aged Bronze. Match by the number rather than the name. Those three-digit codes are the standard BHMA finish designations used across manufacturers, so a 626 lever lands next to the 626 hardware already on your other openings even if that hardware is another brand. Names like satin chrome and brushed chrome get used loosely; the number does not.

Function comes from the lock chassis, not from the lever. The ALX Saturn closed lever is replacement trim, so swapping it changes the look and the finish of the door, not whether the lock is entry, storeroom, classroom or dormitory. To change function you replace the lockset. If dormitory function is what you are actually after, the Cal-Royal CALDOR238 (CAL101) is a dormitory dead latch.

Commercial. The Saturn closed lever is commercial lock trim for ALX Series locks, which is the range that goes on corridor, common area and tenant doors rather than house hardware. Because it is trim, the duty and the function on any given opening are set by the ALX chassis it mounts to; the lever decides the design and the finish.

They cover different pieces of the opening. The Schlage ALX Series Saturn closed lever is lock trim - the lever a person actually grips - supplied as a replacement part for commercial doors in finishes such as 626 satin chrome and 613 oil rubbed bronze. The Cal-Royal CALDOR238 CAL101 is a dormitory dead latch, which is latching hardware carrying a dormitory function. Changing the Saturn lever changes what the door feels like at the hand; it does not put a dormitory function on the opening, and ordering the CALDOR238 does not get you a Schlage ALX lever.
