1) What is a hospital privacy lock and how does the Schlage ALX44 differ from a regular privacy lock?
The ALX44 is a privacy function with no key at all. Push the button on the inside to lock the outside lever; turning the inside lever or simply closing the door releases the button, so nobody gets locked out of a patient room or restroom. Push/pull hospital latches like the ABH 6000, ABH 6800 low profile, ABH 6800Q with a round cover, the Kaba Ilco 459 push/pull paddle, or the Trimco 1562A tubular passage are hands-free operation, not locking privacy. Pick those where staff push through with an elbow or a hip carrying a tray or a cart. If you need mortise rather than cylindrical, the ABH 6600 is a mortise hospital push/pull on a 2-3/4 inch backset.
6) Does the ALX44 take a Schlage cylinder or need keying?
Neither. The ALX44 is a non-keyed function with no cylinder in it at all, so there is nothing to key and it does not join a master key system. Emergency access from the corridor is by coin turn. 7) I need a hospital latch for a door that is already prepped for a mortise lock - will the Schlage ALX44 work?
No. The ALX44 is a cylindrical bored lockset with a 2-3/4 inch backset, so it needs a bored door prep, not a mortise pocket. For a mortise-prepped opening, the ABH 6600 Series is a mortise lock hospital push/pull latch with a 2-3/4 inch backset. Note that the 6600 is a push/pull paddle rather than a lever, and it does not carry the ALX44 hospital privacy function of a pushbutton inside with a coin turn outside.
8) What hospital latch should I use if the door needs to be operated with a forearm or elbow instead of a hand?
Look at push/pull paddle hardware rather than the Schlage ALX44, which is a lever-operated cylindrical lock. The ABH 6000 Series is a push/pull hospital latch with ADA compliance, and the ABH 6800 Series is a low profile version of the same idea, also ADA compliant. The Kaba Ilco 459 Series is a push/pull paddle as well. They are not interchangeable in function even though both are hospital latches. The Trimco 1562A is a passage device with levers down - it latches but does not lock.
