Beyond grade 1 performance is the hallmark of the mechanical and electrified locks. ND Series locks are tested to withstand 3,100 in-lb. of abusive lever torque - more than 2 1/2 times the Grade 1 standard requirement. Offset lever pull testing up to 1,600 lbs. assures you of the lock's superb resistance against pry bar attacks. More than strong, ND Series is built to last and shows nearly zero droop or wobble after 16 million cycles.

All ND Series locks including electronic and ligature-resistant trim use the common cylindrical ANSI 161 door preparation making them easily interchangeable. They are ideal for all new construction and retrofit applications.

1) What is a hospital privacy lock like the Schlage ND44 for, and how is it different from a standard privacy lock?
The ND44 is a push-button privacy lock with an emergency release built for patient rooms and restrooms where staff may need in fast. Push the button inside to lock. From outside it unlocks by turning an emergency turn-button, no key and no tool. The button also releases when the inside lever is turned or the door is closed, so it can't be left locked accidentally. A plain privacy lock (Schlage's ND40, ANSI F76) locks the same way but has no lever trim override of this type. The inside lever is always free for immediate egress, which is what makes it usable on an occupied-room door.
2) Will the Schlage ND44 fit the door prep that's already in my door?
If the door is prepped for a standard cylindrical lock, yes. Every ND Series lock uses the common cylindrical ANSI 161 door preparation, which is why they drop into existing openings and interchange with each other. The lock ships with a 2-3/4 inch backset spring latch (13-248, square corner, 1-1/8 x 2-1/4 inch face) and an ANSI strike (10-025, 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inch with a 1-3/16 inch lip). Check your existing latch face and strike cutout against those two numbers and you'll know in a minute.
3) Does the ND44 hospital privacy lock need to be ordered left or right hand?
No handing to specify. The ND44 is non-handed, so one lock covers either swing and you can stock a single part for a whole floor of patient rooms rather than splitting the order LH and RH.
4) My door only has a 2-3/8 inch backset. Does the Schlage ND44 come that way?
The ND44 ships standard with the 13-248 latch at a 2-3/4 inch backset, which is the usual commercial backset. A 2-3/8 inch backset is the common residential dimension, so if that is what your door is bored for, the standard latch will not reach the strike and you need to specify a 2-3/8 inch latch when you order rather than taking the default.
5) Is the Schlage ND44 ADA compliant for a patient room door?
It meets ADA requirements and complies with ICC A117.1 for accessible and usable buildings. The lever handle is what does it, no tight grasping or wrist twisting to operate. For California, levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch or less comply, which covers the Rhodes, Sparta, Tubular, Omega, Longitude and Boardwalk designs. If you're specifying into a CA project, pick from those six.
6) Should I use a lever hospital privacy lock or a push/pull hospital latch?
Depends on whether staff have hands free. The ND44 is a cylindrical lever lock with a push-button privacy function, so it locks the door, which is what a patient room or a single-occupancy restroom needs. A push/pull hospital latch is a different animal: it operates with a forearm, hip or cart and is generally for doors that don't need to lock, like soiled utility or a treatment room. The ND44 is a cylindrical lock using the ANSI 161 bored preparation, and a mortise door has a rectangular pocket cut into the edge instead of a cross bore and a bored latch hole. Swapping cylindrical into a mortise door means a filler plate or a new door. If you're replacing mortise hospital hardware in kind, the ABH 6600 Series is a mortise hospital push/pull latch with a 2-3/4 inch backset, which stays in the existing pocket.
8) What is the difference between a Schlage ND44 hospital privacy lock and an ABH 6000 Series push/pull hospital latch?
They solve the same patient-room problem with different door trim. The Schlage ND44 is a cylindrical hospital privacy lock with lever handles and push-button locking: the button is released from outside by turning an emergency turn-button, and turning the inside lever or closing the door releases it, so the inside lever is always free for egress. The ABH 6000 Series is a push/pull hospital latch, operated by paddles rather than levers. 9) Is the Trimco 1562A the same thing as a Schlage ND44?
No. The Trimco 1562A Hospital Series is a tubular push/pull latch in a passage function with levers down, and it is a heavy duty product. The Schlage ND44 is a Grade 1 cylindrical lock in a hospital privacy function, also heavy duty. The operative difference is function: passage latches without a locking element, while the ND44 adds push-button privacy locking that is released from outside with an emergency turn-button. If the room needs to be secured from the inside, the 1562A is not a substitute for the ND44.
