1) Will the Schlage ND40 privacy lever fit the ANSI 161 prep already in my bathroom doors?
Yes. Every ND Series lock, including the electronic and ligature-resistant trim, uses the common cylindrical ANSI 161 door preparation, so they drop into an existing 161 prep and swap interchangeably with each other. The standard latch is a 2-3/4 inch backset spring latch with a square corner 1-1/8 x 2-1/4 inch face, and the standard strike is a 10-025 ANSI strike, no box, 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inches with a 1-3/16 inch lip. If your existing openings were prepped for a 2-3/8 inch backset instead of 2-3/4, that is the detail to confirm before ordering.
2) How does the ND40 unlock from the hallway if someone locks themselves in the bathroom?
Push-button locking on the inside, and from the outside it opens with a small screwdriver in the emergency slot. The button also releases when the inside lever is turned or when the door is closed, so it will not stay locked accidentally after someone leaves. The inside lever is always free, so a person inside can walk out at any time regardless of the button.
3) Do I have to order the Schlage ND40 handed for a left or right hand door?
No handing to specify. The ND40 is non-handed, so one lock covers left and right hand bathroom and bedroom doors. What you do choose is the lever design and the finish, not the hand.
4) Is the Schlage ND40 privacy lock approved for a fire rated door?
UL and cUL listed on all ND Series locks: 3 hour A label single fire doors up to 4'0" x 10'0", and pairs at 3 hour up to 8'0" x 8'0" with the 3/4 inch latch option, or 90 minute up to 8'0" x 10'0" with the same 3/4 inch latch. Note the standard latch supplied is the 13-248 spring latch, so a fire rated pair needs the 3/4 inch throw latch specified on the order.
5) What ANSI function number is the Schlage ND40 and does it meet ADA?
ANSI/BHMA F76, the privacy bed and bath function, certified under A156.2 Series 4000 Grade 1. 8) What is the closest Grade 1 privacy lever to the Schlage ND40 if the ND40 lever designs do not match the rest of the building?
Within the heavy duty Grade 1 privacy group, the Arrow MK02-TA is the near equivalent by function and rating: it is a non-keyed privacy/bed/bath cylindrical lock, Grade 1, with a fire rating, fitting doors 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch thick. The difference that decides it is trim - the MK02-TA is a Tudor knob, while the ND40 is a lever in nine designs including Rhodes, Sparta, Athens and Longitude. It depends on traffic. The ND40 is heavy duty Grade 1, zinc and steel, cycle tested to 16 million cycles with near zero lever droop and no set screws or O-rings holding it together. That is what you want on a school, dorm, hospital or hotel restroom that gets hit all day. For a lighter interior bedroom door where the lever sees a few operations a day, a Grade 2 privacy lever such as the Hager 2540 with the Withnell lever covers the same job at a lower duty level. Both are cylindrical, so the prep decision is similar.
13) What is a Grade 1 privacy lever alternative to the Schlage ND40 if I want a knob instead of a lever?
The Arrow MK02-TA is the knob version of the same job: privacy bed and bath function, Grade 1, Tudor knob, non-keyed, fire rated, fitting doors 1-3/4 to 2 inches thick.
