Schlage SCH-B763P-626AM – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does the classroom function on a Schlage B763 deadbolt actually do?
On the B763, the inside thumbturn only retracts the bolt, it cannot throw it. The bolt is projected from outside with the key. That stops a student or occupant from locking a classroom door from the inside, while a teacher or staff member with a key can secure it. Schlage lists the function as E0171 under ANSI/BHMA A156.5.
2) What door thickness will the Schlage B763 deadbolt fit?
With the standard conventional cylinder it covers 1-5/8 inch to 2 inch doors, which is the same range as the FSIC version. If you go with an SFIC cylinder instead, the range narrows to 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch. Standard commercial doors at 1-3/4 inch are covered either way; a 1-3/8 inch door is not, so don't spec the B763 for a thin older interior door.
3) What backset does the B763 use, and can I get it to fit an existing 2-3/8 inch bore?
The B763 as configured is a fixed 2-3/4 inch backset, which Schlage does deliberately since a fixed backset resists tampering better than an adjustable one. The deadbolt supplied is the 12-296, an adjustable 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inch unit with a square corner faceplate at 1-1/8 x 2-1/4 inches and a 1 inch housing diameter, so 2-3/8 inch prep is addressed through that latch option. Adjustable and alternate fixed backsets are available in the B Series.
4) Will the B763 latch into the strike prep already in my frame?
The strike shipped with it is the 10-094, square corner with no box, measuring 1-1/8 x 2-3/4 inches. That is the common tubular deadbolt strike footprint. If your frame is prepped ANSI, or cut for round corners, or uses a thimble strike, Schlage offers those as options in the B Series so you can match existing prep rather than re-cutting the jamb. On wood frames, the supplied metal dust box reinforcer anchors with three 3 inch screws into the stud behind the jamb.
5) Is the Schlage B763 Grade 1, and does that hold if I order it with an interchangeable core?
Grade 1 under ANSI/BHMA A156.5 applies with a conventional cylinder, which is how the B763 is normally supplied. Swap to a full size interchangeable core and the certification drops to Grade 2; with a small format interchangeable core it is Grade 3. If a Grade 1 deadbolt is written into your spec, keep the conventional cylinder.
6) Can I use a Schlage B763 on a fire rated door?
The B Series deadbolts are UL 10C listed with a 3-hour fire rating as auxiliary locks on A label single doors up to 4 by 8 feet, and UL 10B listed for neutral pressure doors. Auxiliary is the operative word: the deadbolt supplements the primary latching hardware on that opening, it isn't the fire door's latch by itself.
7) Does the B763 come keyed, and can I get a run of them keyed alike across a building?
It ships keyed with a 6-pin solid brass conventional cylinder in the Schlage C keyway, keyed different as standard, with two nickel silver cut keys per lock. Keyed alike is an ordering option if you want a group of doors on one key, and you can drop to a 5-pin conventional C keyway cylinder or order it less cylinder if you are supplying your own cores or feeding it into an existing master key system. Factory master keying is available, and restricted and Primus XP keyways are offered on the B700.
8) My door is 1-3/8 inch. What deadbolt should I use instead of the B763?
The B763 starts at 1-5/8 inches with a conventional cylinder, so a 1-3/8 inch door is out of range. For that thickness, the Dexter DB1000 single cylinder is Grade 1 and covers 1-3/8 to 1-7/8 inches. The Accentra D111 is Grade 1 with a 2-3/8 inch backset over 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inches. The Hager 3215 is a Grade 2 commercial single cylinder with a 1 inch throw across the same 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch range. None of those is classroom function, so if the thumbturn must be retract-only, look at the Hager 3118.
9) What deadbolt should I use on a door thicker than the Schlage B763 covers?
The B763 with a conventional cylinder covers 1-5/8 to 2 inch doors. For thicker stock, the Corbin Russwin DL3011 Grade 1 cylindrical deadlock lists a 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 inch door thickness range. It is a cylinder x blank configuration rather than cylinder x thumbturn, so there is no interior turn - if you need an occupant-operated inside turn on a thick door, that changes how the opening works and should be confirmed against the drawing.
10) Which deadbolts look like a substitute for the Schlage B763 but are not classroom function?
Several Grade 1 deadbolts share the B763's grade without sharing its function. The Dexter DB1000 single cylinder is Grade 1 cylinder x thumbturn, but a standard single cylinder turn both projects and retracts the bolt - the B763 classroom function is thumbturn retracts only, so the inside turn cannot lock the door. The Design Hardware D1 Series is Grade 1 double cylinder, keyed both sides with no turn at all. The Corbin Russwin DL2211 is a Grade 1 classroom deadlock but in cylinder x blank form, meaning blank plate inside rather than a thumbturn. If the spec says classroom with an interior turn, none of these three drop in.
11) Is there another deadbolt that keys into the same Schlage C key system as the B763?
Yes. The B763 ships with a 6-pin conventional cylinder in the Schlage C keyway. The Hager 3118 is built with a Schlage C keyway and 6-pin cylinder, and the Hager 3115, 3214 and 3215 are all Grade 2 deadbolts listed with the Schlage C keyway as well - the 3115 and 3215 in single cylinder form, the 3214 double cylinder. That lets you keep a facility on one key system while mixing grades across openings.
12) How far does the bolt throw, and is it strong enough for an exterior commercial door?
The B763 uses a 1 inch throw solid sintered steel bolt with a hardened steel anti-saw pin, in a 1 inch diameter housing. It is rated heavy duty and commercial. Supporting hardware matters as much as the bolt: hardened steel ball bearings shield the mounting bolts from drilling, the free spinning angled collar resists wrenching, and a removable security shield blocks ice pick attack through the door gap.
13) Should I spec a classroom deadbolt or a standard single cylinder deadbolt?
Pick by who you want to be able to lock the door. A standard single cylinder like the B760 (E0151) lets the inside thumbturn both throw and retract the bolt, so anyone inside can lock up. The B763 classroom version only lets the thumbturn retract, keeping lock control with the keyholder. If you want no inside trim at all, the B764 (E0101) is cylinder only, and the B762 (E0141) is cylinder on both sides.
14) What finishes does the Schlage B763 come in, and will it match the rest of my building hardware?
Eleven finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 626AM satin chrome antimicrobial, and 643E aged bronze. 626 satin chrome is the usual commercial default. The trim ring is solid brass or bronze at a shallow 7/8 inch depth, and the B Series suites with nearly all Schlage and Von Duprin product, so it will match your levers and exit devices across the building. The 626AM antimicrobial option is the one healthcare and education buyers usually ask about for high-touch doors.
15) Is the Schlage B763 ADA compliant and Buy American compliant for a government job?
Both. The B Series thumbturn design is ADA compliant, and the product is Buy American Act compliant, which is what usually decides it on federal and state-funded work. Keep in mind the B763 thumbturn retracts only, so the accessible operation on the inside is unlocking, not locking.
16) Do I need to order anything separately to install a B763 on a wood-framed door?
The lock comes with its deadbolt, faceplate, strike, the metal dust box reinforcer with three 3 inch screws, a 6-pin conventional cylinder, and two cut keys, so a standard wood opening is covered out of the box. What you may want to add is a Torx screw pack in place of the standard mounting screws if the door is in a public or high-abuse area, and a drive-in bolt if the door edge is not mortised for a faceplate.
17) Is there a medium duty classroom deadbolt I can use where the Schlage B763 is more lock than the opening needs?
The Falcon D211 is the step down. It is a Grade 2 classroom function deadbolt with single cylinder operation and a medium duty rating, versus the B763's Grade 1 heavy duty build. The function is the same idea - keyed outside, interior thumbturn that retracts only - so the door behaves the same way for occupants. Choose the D211 for interior or lower traffic classroom and office openings and keep the B763 where Grade 1 is called out.
18) I need an interchangeable core deadbolt instead of the conventional cylinder on the Schlage B763 - what are my options?
The B763 accepts conventional, FSIC and SFIC cylinder formats, though the ANSI/BHMA rating changes with the format: Grade 1 with a conventional cylinder, Grade 2 with FSIC and Grade 3 with SFIC. If you would rather buy a lock prepped for a core from the start, the Arrow E61 is a Grade 2 single cylinder deadlock supplied with SFIC prep less core, and the Deltana CL200LAIC is a Grade 2 interchangeable core deadbolt on a 2-3/4 inch backset, matching the B763's standard 2-3/4 inch backset. Note the Arrow E61 is not classroom function.
19) What should I use instead of the Schlage B763 on an exit door where nobody should key it from outside?
The Arrow E60 is the alternative for that opening. It is a Grade 2 exit deadlock, non-keyed, configured blank plate outside by thumbturn inside for doors 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch thick. The B763 is a keyed single cylinder classroom deadbolt, so it always has an exterior cylinder. Where you want the bolt controlled only from the secure side, the E60 removes the outside key entirely.
20) Which Grade 1 deadbolts are closest to the Schlage B763 if my spec only calls for Grade 1 single cylinder and not classroom function?
If the drawing only requires Grade 1 with cylinder x thumbturn, the field opens up. The Accentra D111 is a Grade 1 single cylinder deadbolt on a 2-3/8 inch backset for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors. The Dexter DB1000 single cylinder is Grade 1 for 1-3/8 to 1-7/8 inch doors. The Delaney LM Series is a Grade 1 single cylinder less core deadbolt, and the Deltana CL200LM is a Grade 1 single cylinder. The B763 differs in that its thumbturn retracts only, which is what makes it classroom function, and it runs a 2-3/4 inch backset as standard.
21) Is there another Grade 1 deadbolt with a fire rating comparable to the Schlage B763?
The B763 is UL 10C listed and 3-hour fire rated as an auxiliary lock. The Cal-Royal CRB800 is a heavy duty single cylinder deadbolt with a UL 3-hour fire rated latch in cylinder x thumbturn form. The difference at the opening is function: the CRB800 is a standard single cylinder, while the B763 is classroom function with a thumbturn that retracts only.
22) What is the difference between the Schlage B763 and a mortise deadbolt like the Dormakaba D900?
The B763 is a bored deadbolt that installs in a 1 inch cross bore with a 2-3/4 inch backset and a 1-1/8 by 2-1/4 inch faceplate. The Dormakaba D900 is a small case mortise deadbolt in cylinder x thumbturn form, which requires a mortise pocket cut into the door edge rather than a bored hole. They are not interchangeable in an existing door prep. The Dormakaba M1960 is another cylinder x thumbturn deadbolt, supplied with no trim, which is a different visual outcome from the B763's 7/8 inch trim ring.
23) If I need a keyed deadbolt on both sides instead of the Schlage B763 classroom function, what do I order?
The B763 is keyed single cylinder with an interior thumbturn. For key control on both faces, the Design Hardware D1 Series is a Grade 1 extra heavy duty double cylinder deadbolt for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Dexter DB1000 double cylinder is Grade 1 for 1-3/8 to 1-7/8 inch doors. Within Schlage's own B700 family, the double cylinder function is the B762. Confirm local egress code before putting a double cylinder on an exit door.
24) Is a Grade 3 residential deadbolt an acceptable swap for the Schlage B763 in a commercial building?
Not where the spec calls for Grade 1. The B763 is a Grade 1 commercial deadbolt with a heavy duty rating. Products such as the Cal-Royal ED500 and Cal-Royal LSD are Grade 3 single cylinder deadbolts for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Callan 200S and 210S are Grade 3 as well. They are also standard single cylinder or double cylinder function rather than classroom. For a middle option that still uses the Schlage C keyway, the Hager 3115 is a Grade 2 cylinder x thumbturn deadbolt.

Solid Lock with a Few Hiccups

Posted by Edward on Nov 1st 2023

I recently purchased the Schlage B763 Classroom Deadbolt from Zensupply, and I'm mostly satisfied. The sturdy build and easy installation are definite pluses. However, the key occasionally sticks in the lock, which can be frustrating. Overall, it gets the job done, but there's room for improvement.

This Schlage B763 Classroom Deadbolt from ZenSupply is solid and secure. Its durability is a plus, and it's super easy to install. However, it's a tad tricky to unlock from the outside. Overall, a reliable choice for your security needs.
