Schlage 20-013 S123 118 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What are the alternatives to a Schlage mortise cylinder for an Adams Rite storefront lock?
Adams Rite makes its own 4036 mortise cylinder, a five-pin Grade 1 unit rated down to a 1/2 inch minimum door thickness, which matters on thin narrow stile aluminum. Detex builds the MC65, a 1-1/8 inch six-pin mortise cylinder cut to the Schlage C keyway, so it drops into a site already keyed Schlage C without a new key system. Corbin Russwin's 1000 series is a 1-1/2 inch mortise cylinder supplied with an A02 straight cam, a different cam pattern and a different key system, so treat it as CR hardware rather than a swap.
2) Can I put an Adams Rite cam cylinder into a Schlage L9000 mortise lock?
Not with that cam on it. An L9000 mortise lock wants an A01 Schlage L cam, which is why Corbin Russwin catalogs its 1080 series 1-1/2 inch mortise cylinder with an A01 Schlage L cam for L9000 locks. The Adams Rite cam is a different pattern and will not pick up the lock's hub. On the Schlage modular platform the cam is a replaceable part, so the same cylinder body can be converted by fitting the correct cam, but order the cam that matches the lock you are keying rather than planning to swap it in the field.
3) Can a Schlage 20-013 cylinder be keyed into the master key system we already run in the building?
Order it in the keyway your building already runs and it pins into that system. Stocked keyways cover the classic set (C, CE, EF, F, FG, G) and the multiplex family used for master keying, including C123, C124, C125, C134, C135, C145, C234, C235, C245, C345, S123, S124, S125, S134, S135, S145, S235 and S345. The Schlage modular cylinder supports interchangeability between Everest 29, Primus XP and Classic key systems, so a site partway through a migration is not forced onto one of them. Two cut keys ship with the cylinder.
4) What does the blocking ring do on a mortise cylinder, and do I need it?
The ring is a collar that sits under the cylinder shoulder so the cylinder threads into the lock only as far as you want and the face finishes close to flush with the trim. It is supplied with the 20-013. Get it wrong in either direction and the opening suffers: a cylinder left standing proud of the escutcheon hands an attacker something to grip and twist, while one run too deep can leave the cam short of the lock's actuator. Rings stack, so a cylinder sitting low is corrected with ring thickness, not by buying a different cylinder.
5) Our storefront hardware is 626 satin chrome. Will the Schlage 20-013 cylinder face match it?
626 satin chrome is one of the stocked finishes. So are 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 629 bright stainless steel, 630 satin stainless steel and 643E aged bronze. On the modular cylinder the front housing is the visible part and it comes in all finishes to match the locks, which is useful across a mixed property: hold one keyway for the whole site and vary the face building by building.
6) Can one Schlage modular cylinder cover mortise, rim and key-in-lever openings on the service truck?
That is the reason the platform exists. One cylinder converts to three cylinder types by changing the tailpiece, cam or rear housing, so mortise, rim and key-in-lever or key-in-knob work all come off the same body instead of three separate cylinders on the shelf. Six rear housing lengths handle thicker doors. As supplied, the 20-013 is built for mortise with the Adams Rite cam, so converting it means carrying the matching housings and tailpieces alongside it.
7) We key our buildings on BEST interchangeable cores. Can we use a Schlage 20-013 mortise cylinder?
No, and it would cost you the thing you bought the IC system for. The 20-013 is a conventional pinned cylinder: rekeying it means pulling it from the door and repinning. An interchangeable core system rekeys in seconds with a control key, and that needs an IC housing plus a core such as the BEST 1C standard 5-pin core, the 1CB Peaks 150 series core, or the drill resistant 1CDF 7-pin core. Where an opening is already core prepped, stay with the core. Where it is a conventional Adams Rite style mortise prep, this is the right family.
8) For an MS1847 deadlock, is a cylinder pull the same purchase as a mortise cylinder?
No, those are two different line items. The Adams Rite 4024 is a cylinder pull with trim plate mounting for MS1847 deadlock systems, and the Adams Rite 4025 is a five pin tumbler cylinder pull with through-screws for the same MS1847 deadlock and deadlatch. The Adams Rite 4026 is the wood door version, a five pin tumbler cylinder pull designed for the Adams Rite 5017 wood door deadlock and deadlatch. The Schlage 20-013 is a keyed mortise cylinder supplied as a replacement part with 2 keys, so it goes into a lock case that is already prepped and already has its pull or trim, whereas the 4024, 4025 and 4026 bring the pull hardware with them.
9) Does the Schlage 20-013 cylinder carry an ANSI/BHMA certification for a school or government spec?
BHMA certified to ANSI A156.5 2001, and it is built as commercial rather than residential hardware. Where a submittal asks for a certified cylinder against that standard, the certification is on record. If the drawing calls out a grade instead of a certification, the Adams Rite 4036 mortise cylinder is the one in this class listed as Grade 1.
10) I need a 1-1/8 inch six-pin mortise cylinder in a Schlage C keyway. What else runs that same size and keyway besides the Schlage 20-013?
The Detex MC65 is the closest match on those two counts: it is a 1-1/8 inch 6-pin commercial mortise cylinder cut to the Schlage C keyway. The Schlage 20-013 is likewise a commercial mortise cylinder, ships with 2 keys, and is BHMA certified to ANSI A156.5 2001, and C keyway is one of the keyways it is built in alongside the sectional Everest and Primus keyways such as C123, C124, S124 and S145. One structural difference worth knowing before you commit: the 20-013 is a modular cylinder, so the same body converts between mortise, rim and key-in-lever by changing the tailpiece, cam or rear housing, and six rear housing lengths are offered for thicker doors. If your only requirement is a keyed mortise cylinder on the C keyway, both land in that lane; if you want one body you can reconfigure on the truck, that is the 20-013 side of the comparison.
11) Our maintenance staff wants to rekey doors without pulling hardware off the frame. What interchangeable core cylinders sit alongside the Schlage 20-013?
For small format interchangeable core, the BEST 1CB Peaks is a 150 Series interchangeable core cylinder, the BEST 1CDF is a drill resistant patented interchangeable core in 7-pin brass, also 150 Series, and the BEST 1C is a standard 5-pin cylinder core. For large format on a mortise case, the Corbin Russwin 1080 is a 1-1/2 inch LFIC mortise cylinder, 6-pin, built for Schlage L9000 mortise locks with an A01 Schlage L cam. The Schlage 20-013 is a conventional pinned commercial mortise cylinder BHMA certified to ANSI A156.5 2001, listed with both basic security and enhanced security, and it supports interchangeability between the Everest 29, Primus XP and Classic key systems. The distinction to hold onto for a facility standard: the BEST and Corbin Russwin items above are core-swap products, while the 20-013 is rekeyed as a pinned cylinder and reconfigured by changing housings.
12) A rim cylinder came in with my order instead of a mortise one. Are they interchangeable?
They mount and drive differently, so treat them as separate parts. The Corbin Russwin 3070 is a 6-pin rim cylinder housing with a 1-7/8 inch tailpiece, and the BEST 12E is a dummy rim cylinder measuring 1-5/32 inch in diameter. The Schlage 20-013 is a mortise cylinder for a mortise lock, non-handed, and it turns a cam rather than a through-door tailpiece. Worth noting for anyone stocking both: the 20-013 body is modular and can be taken to a rim configuration by changing the tailpiece, cam or rear housing, which is a different route than buying a dedicated rim housing like the 3070.
13) Most of my doors have knob and lever locks rather than mortise cases. What cylinder do those take?
Those take a key-in-knob or key-in-lever cylinder, which is a different part from a mortise cylinder. The Kaba Ilco 1539 is a key-in-knob and lever universal cylinder, the Kaba Ilco 1599 is a key-in-knob replacement cylinder, and the Kaba Ilco 1579 is a knob and lever cylinder made for Sargent locks. On the Falcon side, the A23161-05 G is a key in lever cylinder in the RU/T series, 6-pin on the G keyway, keyed different and supplied with 2 cut keys. The Schlage 20-013 is a mortise cylinder, and its modular body is adaptable to mortise, rim and key-in-lever or key-in-knob applications by changing housings, which is the route to cover mixed door hardware from one cylinder platform.
14) Half my portfolio is residential entry doors with deadbolts and handlesets. Does a commercial mortise cylinder cover those, or do I need something else?
Those openings are served by rim type retrofit cylinders rather than a mortise cylinder. The Medeco 1012040 is a 6-pin lazy motion rim cylinder for Kwikset single cylinder deadbolts, and the Medeco 1075127 is a 5-pin rim type lazy motion single cylinder for handlesets and deadbolts. For Emtek hardware, the Medeco 1065244 is a 5-pin rim lazy motion cylinder with an Emtek tailpiece, the Medeco 1065140 is a 5-pin retrofit that covers the Arrow JL interconnected lock plus the Emtek handleset and deadbolt outside cylinder, and Emtek supplies its own CY4 cylinder. The Schlage 20-013 is a commercial mortise cylinder BHMA certified to ANSI A156.5 2001, so it belongs on the mortise lock cases in the portfolio rather than on the deadbolt and handleset doors.
