Schlage 20-013 S123 134 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) The storefront door has an Adams Rite MS1847 deadlock and no lever to pull on. Is a mortise cylinder like the Schlage 20-013 all I need there?
If the door also needs something to grab, a cylinder pull does both jobs in one part. The Adams Rite 4024 is a cylinder pull with trim plate mounting designed for use with the Adams Rite MS1847 deadlock and deadlatch, and the Adams Rite 4025 is a five pin tumbler cylinder pull with through-screws for the same MS1847. On a wood door running the Adams Rite 5017 deadlock or deadlatch, the Adams Rite 4026 five pin tumbler cylinder pull is the wood door version. The Schlage 20-013 is a non-handed commercial mortise cylinder, which is what you order when the door already has its pull and only the cylinder is being replaced.
2) What length mortise cylinder do I need for a thicker door, and what is the blocking ring for?
Length comes from the rear housing, and the Schlage modular cylinder takes six housing lengths, so a thicker door is handled by changing the housing instead of stocking a different cylinder for every thickness. Mortise cylinder length steps in 1/8 inch increments and the face should finish flush with the trim. The blocking ring is the spacer that takes up the difference when the cylinder runs slightly long for the prep. For scale, comparable mortise cylinders run from 1-1/8 inches on the Detex MC65 up to 1-1/2 inches on the Corbin Russwin 1000.
3) Does the Schlage 20-013 mortise cylinder have to be ordered handed for a left or right hand door?
Non-handed. A mortise cylinder threads into the lock case the same way whichever direction the door swings, so hand never enters the order. What has to be right is the keyway, the finish and the cam, since the cam is the part that actually engages the lock.
4) The cylinder in our door is worn out. Can I replace just the cylinder and keep the existing mortise lock?
That is exactly what the 20-013 is for. Back off the set screw in the edge of the lock case, thread the old cylinder out, thread the new one in until the cam lines up with the lock's actuator, then retighten. Three things have to match: the cam, so the lock throws; the length, so the face sits flush; and the keyway, if the new key has to work alongside keys already in the building. The lock body, the door prep and the trim all stay as they are.
5) Can a Schlage 20-013 be keyed into the master key system we already run?
Order it in the keyway your existing keys are cut on. The 20-013 is available in Schlage conventional keyways including C, E, EF, FG, G and CE, and in the multi-section keyways of the C and S families such as C123, C145, S123, S234 and S345, which is how a system gets masterkeyed across sections. The modular platform supports interchangeability between the Everest 29, Primus XP and Classic key systems, so a building partway through a keyway migration can still be served from one cylinder. Two keys come with each cylinder.
6) Our building has oil rubbed bronze trim on some doors and satin chrome on others. Can I get cylinder faces that match both?
Yes. The front housing is made in all the standard lock finishes, so the visible face is matched door by door: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 629 bright stainless steel, 630 satin stainless steel and 643E aged bronze. Finish is chosen independently of keyway, so a mixed-finish property can still run every opening on one keying system.
7) Does the Schlage 20-013 mortise cylinder meet commercial spec for an institutional job?
BHMA certified to ANSI A156.5 2001, and built as a commercial cylinder rather than a residential one. It is offered at two security levels, basic and enhanced, which lets a facility run standard cylinders on interior openings and step up on exterior and restricted doors while holding the same keyway and the same finish across the whole standard.
8) What else can I use for a mortise cylinder in a narrow stile aluminum door?
Two are worth knowing. The Adams Rite 4036 is a Grade 1 five-pin mortise cylinder rated to a 1/2 inch minimum door thickness, which is the narrow stile case. The Detex MC65 is a 1-1/8 inch six-pin commercial mortise cylinder supplied in the Schlage C keyway, so it keys into an existing Schlage C system without converting the rest of the building. Either way, match the cam to the lock that is actually in the stile before ordering, because that is what decides whether the bolt throws.
9) Our maintenance staff rekeys doors in house. Should we be buying the Schlage 20-013 or an interchangeable core?
If the crew wants to pull and swap the core with a control key rather than pin a cylinder, look at interchangeable core instead. BEST offers the 1C series standard 5-pin cylinder core, the Peaks 1CB 150 series interchangeable core cylinder, and the 1CDF drill resistant patented interchangeable core, a 7-pin brass 150 series core. Where the mortise lock itself has to accept a large format core, the Corbin Russwin 1080 is a Grade 1 series 1-1/2 inch LFIC mortise cylinder, 6-pin, for Schlage L9000 mortise locks with the A01 Schlage L cam. The Schlage 20-013 is a keyed mortise cylinder furnished with 2 keys and BHMA certified to ANSI A156.5 2001, which suits a facility that keys at the cylinder rather than swapping cores.
10) What does a modular cylinder actually save me if I stock a service van?
One cylinder covers three types. Swap the tailpiece, the cam or the rear housing and the same cylinder becomes a mortise, a rim, or a key-in-knob or key-in-lever cylinder, so the van carries components instead of a separate bin for every configuration and length. Where a dedicated rim housing suits the job better, the Corbin Russwin 3070 is a six-pin rim cylinder housing with a 1-7/8 inch tailpiece.
11) We key everything to Corbin Russwin. What mortise cylinder runs in place of the Schlage 20-013?
Two Corbin Russwin mortise cylinders cover the same duty. The Corbin Russwin 1000 is a Grade 1 series mortise cylinder, 1-1/2 inches long, furnished with an A02 straight cam. The Corbin Russwin 1070 is a Grade 1 series 1-1/4 inch 6-pin mortise housing with an A01 cloverleaf cam. Pick by the cam the lock case needs and by the length the door and lock front require, since those two differ from each other. The Schlage 20-013 is a commercial mortise cylinder built on Schlage's modular platform, where changing the tailpiece, cam or rear housing converts one cylinder into mortise, rim or key-in-lever form, and it is BHMA certified to ANSI A156.5 2001.
12) I only need one mortise cylinder on a Schlage C keyway for a single door. Is there something less involved than the modular Schlage 20-013?
The Detex MC65 is a single fixed configuration: a 1-1/8 inch 6-pin commercial grade mortise cylinder that comes on the Schlage C keyway, so there is nothing to select or assemble. The Schlage 20-013 is the broader program - it is offered across Schlage keyways including Everest 29 and Primus XP, with front housings in finishes running from 605 bright brass to 630 satin stainless steel, and its tailpiece, cam and rear housing are changeable to make other cylinder types. Choose the Detex when one keyway and one length settle the job, and the Schlage when the cylinder has to match an existing Schlage key system or finish.
13) I have a Corbin Russwin 3070 rim cylinder on the shelf. Can it go where a Schlage 20-013 mortise cylinder goes?
No. The Corbin Russwin 3070 is a 6-pin rim cylinder housing with a 1-7/8 inch tailpiece, so it mounts through the door and drives a rim device from the back side rather than seating in a mortise lock case. The Schlage 20-013 is a mortise cylinder. The same caution applies to the BEST 12E series dummy rim cylinder, 1-5/32 inch diameter, which is a dummy and does not operate a lock at all. If the Schlage modular cylinder is what you have on hand, the platform converts between mortise and rim form by changing the tailpiece, cam or rear housing, so the conversion happens on the Schlage side rather than by substituting another brand's rim housing.
14) The Falcon A23161-05 G is a 6-pin G keyway cylinder and the Schlage 20-013 comes in a G keyway too. Are they interchangeable?
They share a keyway family but not an application. The Falcon A23161-05 G is a key in lever cylinder for the RU/T series, 6-pin G keyway, keyed different with 2 cut keys - it seats in the lever, not in a mortise lock case. The Schlage 20-013 is a mortise cylinder, and G keyway is one of the keyway choices it is built in. The Kaba Ilco 1539 key-in-knob and lever universal cylinder, the 1599 key-in-knob replacement cylinder, and the 1579 knob and lever cylinder for Sargent sit in that same key-in-lever group and are likewise not mortise cylinders. Match the cylinder to the lock body first, then to the keyway.
15) Some of my units still have plain residential deadbolts. Is the Schlage 20-013 the right cylinder for those as well?
Those doors take a deadbolt cylinder rather than a mortise cylinder. The Kaba Ilco 1549 is a key-in-deadbolt cylinder with a deadbolt function. The Medeco 1012040 is a 6-pin lazy motion rim cylinder made for Kwikset single cylinder deadbolts, and the Medeco 1075127 is a 5-pin rim type lazy motion single cylinder for handlesets and deadbolts. The Schlage 20-013 is a commercial mortise cylinder, so keep it for the mortise locks and use the deadbolt style cylinders on the residential style hardware. If the goal is one key across both groups, decide the key system first, because the deadbolt cylinders and the mortise cylinder come from different keying programs.
16) We have Emtek handlesets and an Arrow interconnected lock in the same building as our mortise locks. Does the Schlage 20-013 cover those openings?
No, those need cylinders cut for their own hardware. The Emtek CY4 cylinder is the Emtek part sold each. The Medeco 1065244 is a 5-pin rim lazy motion rim type cylinder supplied with an Emtek tailpiece, and the Medeco 1065140 is a 5-pin retrofit cylinder for the Arrow JL interconnected lock and for the Emtek handleset and deadbolt outside cylinder. The Schlage 20-013 stays on the commercial mortise locks; it is a mortise cylinder supplied with 2 keys and it is non-handed, so the same part covers either hand of door on that side of the building.
