Schlage 20-057-C-643E – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Is the Schlage 20-057 a fixed cylinder or does it take a removable interchangeable core?
Full size interchangeable core, 6-pin, in the Schlage C keyway. The 20-057 is a rim cylinder, so it mounts through the door face and drives a rim device or rim lock by a tailpiece. The core is the part that comes out: on an FSIC system the control key pulls the core and a new one drops straight in, so rekeying an opening is a swap at the door rather than a bench job on the cylinder.
2) Can the Schlage 20-057 C keyway cylinder be keyed into our building's existing Schlage master key system?
Yes, and it ships set up for exactly that. The 20-057 comes 1 bitted, which means the core is not cut to a working change yet, so your locksmith or key shop pins it to your existing C keyway bitting before it goes on the door. Two keys come with it. C is Schlage's Classic keyway; if the building is keyed on Everest 29 or Primus XP instead, order the cylinder in that keyway, since Schlage carries interchangeability across Classic, Everest 29 and Primus XP.
3) Is the Schlage 20-057 the complete lock, or just the cylinder for hardware I already have?
Just the cylinder. The 20-057 is a replacement part for commercial openings, a brass rim cylinder that goes into a device or lock already hanging on the door. No exit device, latch, strike or trim comes with it. What is in the box is the cylinder in 643E aged bronze with two keys, ready for your keying.
4) Does the Schlage 20-057 rim cylinder have a handing, or does one part cover left and right hand doors?
Non-handed. One 20-057 covers both hands, so there is no LH or RH to call out on the order and no reason to hold two versions for opposite swinging pairs. It uses a convertible tailpiece rather than a fixed cam, so the tail is set to suit the device it is driving.
5) I need a Schlage C keyway cylinder for a mortise lock, not a rim device. What should I order instead?
Rim and mortise are not interchangeable formats. The 20-057 is a rim cylinder, so it works through the door face into a rim device and will not thread into a mortise lock body. For a mortise opening on the same key system, the Detex MC65 is a 1-1/8 inch 6-pin commercial mortise cylinder cut to the Schlage C keyway, so it takes the same C keys your other Schlage hardware uses.
6) Will 643E aged bronze match the Schlage hardware already on our doors?
643E is Schlage's aged bronze finish code, so it matches other openings specified 643E exactly. Schlage offers the cylinder front housing across its full finish range precisely so the cylinder disappears into the lock it sits in. Where the rest of the building carries a different code, order that finish rather than accepting a near match: a rim cylinder sits on the face of the door at eye level and a mismatch shows.
7) We don't run an interchangeable core program. Is there a plain rim cylinder housing we should buy instead?
FSIC earns its keep when you swap cores instead of rekeying, so if nobody on site holds a control key the feature is wasted. A conventional option is the Corbin Russwin 3070, a 6-pin rim cylinder housing with a 1-7/8 inch tailpiece. It runs on the Corbin Russwin key system, not Schlage C, so it belongs on a building already keyed Corbin Russwin rather than as a one off substitute on a Schlage keyed site.
8) Our facility is standardized on BEST cores. Can we use a Schlage C keyway core in those housings?
No. A Schlage C keyway core and a BEST core are separate key systems and separate core formats; they will not accept each other's keys and will not drop into each other's housings. If the building is keyed BEST, stay there. The BEST 1CB is an interchangeable core cylinder from the Peaks 150 Series, and the 1CDF is a drill resistant patented 7-pin brass core in the same 150 Series. Bring Schlage in only where you are converting the openings over wholesale.
9) I just need something to fill the cylinder hole with no keying behind it. Will the Schlage 20-057 do that?
Not this one. The 20-057 is a live 6-pin keyed cylinder supplied 1 bitted, so it has to be pinned before it does anything. For an opening where you want the appearance of a cylinder and no keyed function at all, the BEST 12E Series dummy rim cylinder is the part for that, at 1-5/32 inches diameter.
10) We run Schlage 20-057 interchangeable cores. What interchangeable core cylinders do other manufacturers build?
The Schlage 20-057 is a 6-pin FSIC rim cylinder with a convertible tailpiece, supplied with 2 keys. On the BEST side there are three to know: the 1CB is a Peaks interchangeable core cylinder in the 150 series, the 1CDF is a drill resistant patented interchangeable core, 7-pin, brass, also 150 series, and the 1C is a standard 5-pin cylinder core. Pin count is the first thing to settle before any of them go on an order, because the 20-057 is 6-pin, the 1CDF is 7-pin, and the 1C is 5-pin, and a core has to match the pinning of the system it is joining.
11) The Detex MC65 also lists the Schlage C keyway. Can it stand in for the 20-057?
They share a keyway but not a form. The Schlage 20-057 is a 6-pin FSIC rim cylinder with a convertible tailpiece, supplied in the C keyway. The Detex MC65 is a 1-1/8 inch 6-pin commercial mortise cylinder, also in the Schlage C keyway. A mortise cylinder threads into the lock body and turns a cam; a rim cylinder mounts through the door and drives a tailpiece to the device on the other face. Both can sit on the same C key system, so the keys are not the issue - the prep is. Check which one the lock in the door is cut for before ordering either.
12) I need a rim cylinder for an exit device and we do not run an interchangeable core program. What is the alternative to the Schlage 20-057?
The Corbin Russwin 3070 is a 6-pin rim cylinder housing in the 3000 series with a 1-7/8 inch tailpiece. The tailpiece length is part of the part number, so you confirm the door and device call for 1-7/8 inch before it goes on the order. The Schlage 20-057 takes the other route: it is a 6-pin FSIC rim cylinder with a convertible tailpiece, so tailpiece configuration happens at assembly instead of at ordering. If your openings are consistent, one fixed tailpiece length covers them; if they vary, the convertible tailpiece is the reason to stay with the 20-057.
13) The lock on this door is a Schlage L9000 mortise lock, not a rim device. What cylinder goes in it?
Not the 20-057 - that one is a 6-pin FSIC rim cylinder. For an L9000 the Corbin Russwin 1080 is built for it: a Grade 1 series 1-1/2 inch LFIC mortise cylinder, 6-pin, with the A01 Schlage L cam. If the mortise lock does not need an interchangeable core, the Corbin Russwin 1070 is a 1-1/4 inch 6-pin mortise housing with the A01 cloverleaf cam, and the Corbin Russwin 1000 is a Grade 1 series 1-1/2 inch mortise cylinder with the A02 straight cam. Cam type and cylinder length are what decide whether a mortise cylinder drives the lock body, so confirm both against the lock before ordering.
14) Is the BEST 12E rim cylinder an equivalent to the 20-057 on a door that has to be keyed?
No, and the difference is not cosmetic. The BEST 12E is a dummy rim cylinder with a 1-5/32 inch diameter - it fills the cylinder hole and matches the face of a keyed cylinder without operating anything. The Schlage 20-057 is a working 6-pin FSIC rim cylinder with a convertible tailpiece and comes with 2 keys. A dummy belongs on the inactive leaf of a pair or on a door where the trim has to match but nothing is being locked. Anywhere the door actually latches and locks, the 20-057 is the one that does the work.
15) Our building runs Schlage C keys. Will a Falcon A23161-05 cylinder go on the same system?
It will not take the same key. The Falcon A23161-05 G is a key-in-lever cylinder for the RU/T series, 6-pin in the G keyway, keyed different and supplied with 2 cut keys. The Schlage 20-057 is supplied in the C keyway. Two cylinders can both be 6-pin and still reject each other's keys, because the keyway is the profile the blade has to pass through, not the number of pins behind it. If the building is on C, keep the cylinders on C and treat the G keyway parts as a separate system.
16) Can a Medeco rim cylinder be used in place of the Schlage 20-057 on a commercial device?
The Medeco rim cylinders are built around specific host locks rather than a general commercial rim prep. The 1012040 is a 6-pin lazy motion rim cylinder for Kwikset single cylinder deadbolts, the 1065244 is a 5-pin rim lazy motion cylinder with an Emtek tailpiece, and the 1075127 is a 5-pin rim type lazy motion single cylinder for handlesets and deadbolts. The 1065140 is a 5-pin retrofit cylinder for the Arrow JL interconnected lock and the Emtek handleset and deadbolt outside cylinder. The Schlage 20-057 is a commercial 6-pin FSIC rim cylinder with a convertible tailpiece. Match the cylinder to the lock it is going into: the Medeco parts are named for their host, and the 20-057 is configured to its host at assembly.
17) Our storefront entrances take Adams Rite MS deadlocks. Is the 20-057 the cylinder for those?
A stile door on an MS deadlock uses hardware built for that lock, not a rim cylinder. The Adams Rite 4024 is a cylinder pull with trim plate mounting and the 4025 is a five pin tumbler cylinder pull with through-screws, both designed for use with the MS1847 deadlock and deadlatch. The 4026 is the five pin tumbler cylinder pull for wood door applications, designed for the Adams Rite 5017 wood door deadlock and deadlatch. Where the opening calls for a mortise cylinder on that hardware, the Adams Rite 4036 is a five-pin Grade 1 mortise cylinder in the 4036 series with a 1/2 inch minimum door thickness. The Schlage 20-057 is a 6-pin FSIC rim cylinder with a convertible tailpiece - a different mounting entirely from a stile door cylinder pull.
18) We have rim devices, mortise locks and key-in-lever sets in one building. Do we have to stock a separate cylinder line for each?
That depends on which approach you standardize on. The Schlage modular cylinder is adaptable to mortise, rim and key-in-lever or key-in-knob applications by changing the tailpiece, cam or rear housing, with six rear housing lengths for thicker doors, front housings in finishes to match the locks, and interchangeability between the Everest 29, Primus XP and Classic key systems. The 20-057 sits in that family as a 6-pin FSIC rim cylinder with a convertible tailpiece. Other manufacturers keep the types as separate part numbers: Corbin Russwin has the 3070 6-pin rim housing with a 1-7/8 inch tailpiece, the 1070 1-1/4 inch 6-pin mortise housing with an A01 cloverleaf cam, and the 1000 Grade 1 series 1-1/2 inch mortise cylinder with an A02 straight cam, each ordered for its own application. One route configures from common parts; the other assigns a part number per lock type.
19) The cylinder in one of our lever handles is worn out and the lock is not a Schlage. What replaces it?
For a lever or knob set, the replacement follows the lock, not the rim hardware. Kaba Ilco covers several hosts: the 1539 is a key-in-knob and lever universal cylinder, the 1579 is a knob and lever cylinder for Sargent, the 1599 is a key-in-knob replacement cylinder, and the 1549 is a key-in-deadbolt cylinder. Falcon has the A23161-05 G, a key-in-lever cylinder for the RU/T series, 6-pin G keyway, keyed different with 2 cut keys. The Schlage 20-057 is supplied as a 6-pin FSIC rim cylinder with a convertible tailpiece, so it is the answer for a rim application rather than for a worn lever cylinder in another maker's lock. Identify the lock first, then pick the cylinder built for it.
