Schlage 23-030 ICA ORG – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is a Schlage 23-030 construction core and why would I need one during a build?
The 23-030 is a 6-pin full size interchangeable core only, no housing, supplied on a construction keyway. During construction the trades all carry one key; when the job is finished the core pulls out with a control key and the owner's permanent core drops straight in, so no lock has to be taken apart or rekeyed at turnover. It ships with 2 keys.
2) Does the Schlage 23-030 come with a housing, or do I need to buy the mortise or rim housing separately?
Core only. The 23-030 is the FSIC core by itself, so you still need the matching full size interchangeable core housing for whatever you are putting it in, mortise, rim, or key-in-lever. If the lock already has an FSIC prep on it, the core is all you need.
3) Which keyway do I order on a Schlage construction core, ICA, ICB or ICC?
Three construction keyways are offered: ICA, ICB and ICC. Pick the one that does not collide with the permanent system going into the building, and use different keyways if you are running separate construction key sets on adjacent buildings or phases. Keying is also specified at order time as KD keyed different or KA keyed alike, with keyed alike being what you want when one construction key has to open every opening on the site.
4) Will a Schlage full size interchangeable core work in a BEST small format IC housing?
No. The 23-030 is a full size interchangeable core, which is a physically larger figure-eight core than the small format IC used in BEST-style housings. If your prep is small format, look at the BEST 1C Series 5-pin core or the BEST Peaks 1CB 150 Series interchangeable core instead, which are BEST's own core line. Mixing the two formats is the most common wrong order on IC hardware.
5) Can I put a Schlage FSIC core into a system that already uses conventional Schlage cylinders?
Yes, because the core shares Schlage keyway families with the conventional cylinders, so it drops into an existing conventional key system rather than forcing a second system. The core also works across Everest 29, Primus XP and Classic key systems. That is what lets a property manager standardize one key hierarchy across doors that have a mix of IC and conventional hardware.
6) I need a mortise cylinder for a Schlage L9000 lock, is this the right part?
No. The 23-030 is a core with no housing and no cam, so it will not thread into a mortise lock on its own. For a Schlage L9000 mortise lock the Corbin Russwin 1080 Series 1-1/2 inch LFIC mortise cylinder is built for that application with the A01 Schlage L cam, or for a conventional mortise cylinder the Corbin Russwin 1000 Series 1-1/2 inch with an A02 straight cam.
7) What is the BEST equivalent to a Schlage 23-030 interchangeable core?
The closest interchangeable-core peers from BEST are the 1C series cores. The BEST 1C Series Standard 5-Pin Cylinder Core is a 5-pin core, and the BEST Peaks 1CB is a 150 Series interchangeable core cylinder. The Schlage 23-030 is a full size interchangeable core in 6-pin, so pin count and keyway family are the two things to match: the 23-030 comes in ICA, ICB and ICC construction keyways, and its cores use the industry standard 1/2 inch plug diameter with shared keyway families so they integrate into an existing conventional cylinder system. A BEST core keys to BEST's own system, so it is an equivalent only if the housings on the doors are BEST FSIC housings, not Schlage.
8) The lock does not take an interchangeable core, what mortise cylinder do I use instead?
The Schlage 23-030 is a full size interchangeable core only, so it needs a housing built to accept an FSIC core. A mortise lock with a fixed threaded cylinder takes a conventional mortise cylinder instead: the Corbin Russwin 1000 Grade 1 Series Mortise Cylinder is 1-1/2 inch with an A02 straight cam, the Corbin Russwin 1070 Grade 1 Series is a 1-1/4 inch 6-pin mortise housing with an A01 cloverleaf cam, and the Detex MC65 is a 1-1/8 inch 6-pin mortise cylinder in the Schlage C keyway. Match the cylinder length to the door and trim, and the cam to the lock body.
9) What is the difference between a full size interchangeable core and an LFIC mortise cylinder?
The Schlage 23-030 is the core itself, a 6-pin full size interchangeable core with no housing, pulled and replaced with a control key when rekeying is required. The Corbin Russwin 1080 Grade 1 Series is a complete 1-1/2 inch LFIC mortise cylinder, 6-pin, for Schlage L9000 mortise locks with an A01 cloverleaf cam. Large format and small format cores are different core footprints, so a 23-030 core does not drop into a housing built for the other format, and the 1080 arrives as a housing and cylinder rather than a bare core.
10) What cylinder goes in an aluminum storefront deadlock instead of an interchangeable core?
Storefront deadlocks take their own cylinder formats rather than an FSIC core. For Adams Rite MS1847 deadlock and deadlatch systems, the 4024 cylinder pull mounts with a trim plate and the 4025 is a five pin tumbler cylinder pull with through-screws; the 4026 five pin tumbler cylinder pull is for wood door applications with the 5017 wood door deadlock. The Adams Rite 4036 is a Grade 1 mortise cylinder with five-pin security for a 1/2 inch minimum door thickness. The Schlage 23-030 core fits openings whose hardware is already prepped with an FSIC housing.
11) Is the Schlage 23-030 core rekeyable, or do I throw it away when the job ends?
It is a pinned core, so it can be rekeyed rather than discarded, and the whole point of the interchangeable format is that rekeying an opening is a core swap done at the door in seconds instead of a lock teardown. Most contractors pull the construction cores at turnover and hold them for the next job.
12) I need a rim cylinder for an exit device, will this Schlage core do the job?
Not by itself. A rim device needs a rim housing with a tailpiece, and the 23-030 is the core alone. If you want a conventional rim cylinder instead of going the IC route, the Corbin Russwin 3070 6-pin rim cylinder housing with a 1-7/8 inch tailpiece is a rim housing we carry.
13) Can I order Schlage construction cores keyed alike so one key opens the whole site?
Yes. Keying is specified on the order as KA keyed alike for multiple locks, or KD keyed different if each opening needs its own key. On a construction set KA is usually what you want, and a specific key code can be given at order time if the site is matching an existing construction key.
14) I need a higher pin count than 6 for a core, what is available instead?
The Schlage 23-030 is a 6-pin full size interchangeable core. If the keying system calls for 7 pins, the BEST 1CDF Drill Resistant Preferred Patented Interchangeable Core is a 7-pin brass 150 Series core. That moves the opening onto a BEST patented key system with drill resistance, so the whole set of cores and keys for that system changes with it rather than just the one core.
15) Can I use a rim cylinder in place of an interchangeable core on an exit device?
Only if the device takes a rim housing rather than an FSIC housing. The Corbin Russwin 3070 is a 6-pin rim cylinder housing with a 1-7/8 inch tailpiece, which is a complete rim cylinder assembly with the tailpiece that drives the device. The Schlage 23-030 is a core only, non-handed, and relies on a separate FSIC rim housing to provide the tailpiece. Confirm which housing is on the device before ordering either.
16) Which cylinder do I order for a key-in-lever lock rather than a core?
A key-in-lever lock that is not cored takes a knob and lever cylinder. The Falcon A23161-05 G is a key-in-lever cylinder for the RU/T series in the 6-pin G keyway, keyed different with two cut keys. Kaba Ilco offers universal replacements: the 1539 Series key-in-knob and lever cylinder, the 1579 for Sargent knobs and levers, and the 1599 key-in-knob replacement cylinder. The Schlage 23-030 covers the key-in-lever application only where the lock is fitted with an FSIC housing, and it ships with 2 keys.
17) What looks like a core substitute for the Schlage 23-030 but is not?
The BEST 12E Series Dummy Rim Cylinder with a 1-5/32 inch diameter looks like a cylinder and mounts like one, but it is a dummy and carries no keyed plug, so it will not operate a lock. The Schlage 23-030 is a keyed 6-pin full size interchangeable core supplied with 2 keys. Use a dummy only where the opening needs the appearance of a cylinder on an inactive leaf.
18) Is there a cylinder that retrofits a residential deadbolt or handleset instead of a commercial core?
Yes, and those are a different family from the Schlage 23-030, which is a commercial full size interchangeable core in brass. Medeco offers retrofit cylinders sized to residential locks: the 1012040 is a 6-pin lazy motion rim cylinder for Kwikset single cylinder deadbolts, the 1065140 is a 5-pin retrofit for the Arrow JL interconnected lock and Emtek handleset and deadbolt outside cylinder, the 1065244 is a 5-pin lazy motion rim cylinder with an Emtek tailpiece, and the 1075127 is a 5-pin rim type lazy motion single cylinder for handlesets and deadbolts. Kaba Ilco's 1549 Series is a key-in-deadbolt cylinder. Pick by the lock being retrofitted, not by pin count alone.
19) For standardizing a facility, does a Grade 1 mortise cylinder or an interchangeable core make more sense?
They standardize on different things. Grade 1 mortise cylinders such as the Corbin Russwin 1000 Series and the Corbin Russwin 1070 Series carry a stated Grade 1 series rating and are threaded into the lock body, so rekeying means pulling and pinning the cylinder. The Schlage 23-030 is a full size interchangeable core built on the industry standard 1/2 inch plug diameter, so rekeying is quick when it is required and its shared keyway families let it integrate into an existing conventional cylinder system. A facility that turns keys often across many doors gets that swap; a facility with fixed cylinder hardware stays on the mortise cylinder.
20) Does handing matter when ordering a Schlage 23-030 core?
No. The core is non-handed, so the same part goes into a left or right hand opening. Handing on IC hardware lives in the lock and the housing, not the core.
21) What plug diameter does the Schlage FSIC core use?
The core is built on the industry standard 1/2 inch plug diameter, so it takes standard pinning components and a locksmith is not stocking anything special to service it. The core body is brass.
22) Is the Schlage 23-030 core suitable for commercial or multifamily buildings, or is it a residential part?
Commercial. It is a commercial grade FSIC replacement part, which is the format spec'd on institutional, healthcare, education and multi-family jobs precisely because facilities staff can rekey a door without pulling the lock off it.
