1) What is a Schlage ICC construction core and what happens to it when the building is finished?
The Schlage 23-030-ICC full size interchangeable construction core is a temporary 6-pin core used during construction so trades can key into the building without giving them the permanent keys. It drops into any Schlage FSIC housing and pulls back out with a control key once the job is turned over, so the permanent core goes in without touching the lock itself. The core is orange so anyone walking the job can see at a glance which openings are still on construction keying.
2) Does the Schlage ICC construction core come with keys?
No keys ship with the 23-030-ICC core. You order the keying separately, either keyed different, which is the standard, or keyed alike when you want one construction key to run multiple openings on the site. Keyed alike is what most GCs want on a construction core, since the point is one key for every trade on the job. Cut keys and the control key needed to pull the core have to be sourced on their own.
3) Is this a permanent cylinder or should I plan to replace it?
Plan to replace it. This is a construction core, a temporary 6-pin FSIC core meant to hold the opening secure through the build and then come out. It is a commercial replacement part, not the finished cylinder you leave in a tenant space. Order the permanent cores on the building's real keyway and key system at the same time so the turnover swap is not what holds up occupancy.
4) I need a mortise cylinder, not a core. What should I be ordering instead?
A construction core is not a complete mortise cylinder. It needs a Schlage FSIC mortise housing to become one. If you want a one-piece mortise cylinder off the shelf, the Corbin Russwin 1000 Grade 1 Series at 1-1/2 inch with an A02 straight cam or the CR1070 Grade 1 at 1-1/4 inch with an A01 cloverleaf cam are complete mortise cylinders. For a Schlage L9000 mortise lock specifically, the Corbin Russwin 1080 is a 1-1/2 inch 6-pin LFIC mortise cylinder built for that lock with the A01 Schlage L cam.
5) What is the difference between a Schlage 23-030 full size interchangeable core and a BEST interchangeable core?
Both are figure-eight style interchangeable cores that drop into a compatible housing and pull with a control key, but they belong to different key systems and different pin counts. The Schlage 23-030-ICC-50-231 is a full size interchangeable core in a 6-pin configuration on the ICC construction keyway. The BEST 1CB is a Peaks 1CB 150 Series interchangeable core cylinder, and the BEST 1CDF is a drill resistant patented interchangeable core in 7-pin brass, 150 Series. A BEST core is keyed and controlled in the BEST system, so it will not accept a Schlage control key or a Schlage operating key, and the Schlage core will not take BEST keys. Match the core to the key system the building already runs.
6) Is a Corbin Russwin 1080 LFIC mortise cylinder an equivalent to a Schlage 23-030 interchangeable core?
No, they are two different parts even though both use the words interchangeable core. The Schlage 23-030-ICC-50-231 is a full size interchangeable core by itself, 6-pin, with no housing and no keys supplied. The Corbin Russwin CR1080-112-A01 is a 1-1/2 inch LFIC mortise cylinder, 6-pin, from the 1080 Grade 1 series, built for Schlage L9000 mortise locks and supplied with an A01 cloverleaf cam. LFIC means large format interchangeable core, a housing that accepts a core of a different profile than a full size Schlage figure-eight core. Order the 23-030 when you need the core element for an existing full size IC prep, and the CR1080 when you need a complete mortise cylinder body with a cam.
7) If the door does not have an interchangeable core prep, what cylinder should I use instead of the Schlage 23-030?
A conventional mortise or rim cylinder is the part for a non-IC opening. For a mortise lock body, the Corbin Russwin CR1000-112 is a 1-1/2 inch mortise cylinder from the 1000 Grade 1 series with an A02 straight cam, and the CR1070-114-A01 is a 1-1/4 inch 6-pin mortise housing with an A01 cloverleaf cam. The Detex MC65 is a 1-1/8 inch 6-pin commercial grade mortise cylinder cut to the Schlage C keyway, which keeps a non-IC opening on the same Schlage key system as the rest of the building. For a rim exit device, the Corbin Russwin 3070-178 is a 6-pin rim cylinder housing with a 1-7/8 inch tailpiece. The Schlage 23-030-ICC-50-231 core only serves openings already prepped to take a full size interchangeable core.
8) Does handing matter when ordering a Schlage construction core?
Handing is not a factor. The 23-030-ICC core is non-handed, so the same part goes into a left or right hand opening. What you do have to match is the housing type: the core drops into a Schlage FSIC prep, and the lock type (mortise, rim, or key-in-lever) is set by the housing and tailpiece, not by the core.
9) Can I use one construction core across mortise, rim, and key-in-lever locks on the same job?
Yes, and that is the point of the Schlage modular system. The cylinder body serves mortise, rim, and key-in-lever or key-in-knob applications, with the tailpiece, cam, or rear housing deciding which one you get. On a mixed job that means one construction core family across the whole opening schedule instead of a separate temporary cylinder for each lock type.
10) What key systems can I move to after the construction core comes out?
Schlage modular cylinders support interchangeability between Everest 29, Primus XP, and Classic key systems, and they are available in all Schlage keyways. So the construction phase can run on the ICC core and the permanent keying can land on a patented Primus XP system or an Everest 29 system without changing the lock hardware, only the core.
11) Do I need a construction core at all, or can I just key the permanent cylinders early?
You can key permanent cylinders early, but then every trade on the site holds a key that opens the finished building, and the only fix at turnover is rekeying. A construction core keeps the permanent key system clean: the temporary orange core comes out with a control key and the permanent core goes in, no lock removal and no rekeying. On a job where the owner is buying a Primus XP or Everest 29 system, that is the difference between issuing the real keys to subcontractors and never issuing them at all.
12) Can I get all the construction cores on a site keyed to one key?
Yes. Keyed alike is an ordering option, so a run of these cores can be cut to a single construction key across every opening on the site. Keyed different is the standard option if you want each opening on its own key, and if you are matching an existing construction key system you supply the key code with the order.
13) I need a temporary cylinder during construction that does not have to key anything. What are my options?
Two different approaches. The Schlage 23-030-ICC-50-231 is a full size interchangeable construction core on the ICC keyway, meaning a working core that operates the lock on a construction key and is pulled with a control key and replaced by the permanent core at turnover, with no lock disassembly. The BEST 12E Series dummy rim cylinder with a 1-5/32 inch diameter is the other approach: a non-operating cylinder that fills the hole and gives the correct appearance where no key function is wanted at all. Use the 23-030 when the trades need to lock and unlock the opening during the job; use a dummy when the opening should never be keyed.
14) Can I use a key-in-knob or key-in-lever replacement cylinder in place of a Schlage interchangeable core?
Only if the lock is not prepped for a full size interchangeable core. The Kaba Ilco 1539 Series is a key-in-knob and lever universal cylinder, the 1579 Series is a knob and lever cylinder for Sargent locks, and the 1599 Series is a key-in-knob replacement cylinder; the Falcon A23161-05 G is a key-in-lever cylinder for the RU/T series in a 6-pin G keyway, keyed different with two cut keys. Each of those is a complete conventional cylinder that replaces the cylinder in a specific knob or lever body. The Schlage 23-030-ICC-50-231 is a 6-pin full size interchangeable core that seats in an IC-prepped lock and is exchanged with a control key. Confirm which prep the lock chassis has before ordering.
15) Does a Schlage interchangeable core work in an Adams Rite narrow stile deadlock?
No. Narrow stile aluminum door hardware takes its own cylinder formats. The Adams Rite 4036 is a five-pin mortise cylinder rated Grade 1 in the 4036 Series with a 1/2 inch minimum door thickness, and the 4024, 4025 and 4026 are cylinder pulls, the 4024 with a trim plate mounting and the 4025 with through-screws for the MS1847 deadlock and deadlatch, and the 4026 for the 5017 wood door deadlock and deadlatch. The Schlage 23-030-ICC-50-231 full size interchangeable core requires a lock prepped to receive a figure-eight core and does not fit those Adams Rite bodies.
