1) What is a Schlage 80-035 construction core actually for, and when do I swap it out?
The 80-035 is a temporary core for the construction phase of a commercial keying job. It secures the building on a construction master key while trades are still in and out, then gets pulled and replaced with the permanent core at handover. Because it is a small format interchangeable core, that swap happens with a control key at the door, so the lockset never comes off and the permanent keying goes live the day the owner takes the building.
2) Brown keyway or green keyway on the Schlage 80-035, which one do I order?
Order the one that matches the keyway family your master key system is built on, brown or green. Those are the only two the 80-035 comes in, and they are not interchangeable: a brown core will not accept a green construction key or vice versa. If the GC or the locksmith set up the construction keying already, ask which keyway the construction master is cut to and buy that. Getting this wrong is the single most common reason a core arrives and will not operate.
3) Will a Schlage SFIC core fit my existing locks, or do I need special hardware?
The lock has to be SFIC prepped. A small format interchangeable core has a smaller plug than a standard cylinder and drops into a figure-eight core housing, so it only goes into locksets, rim cylinders, mortise housings, padlocks and exit device trim that were bought SFIC ready. A standard mortise or rim cylinder body will not take it. Check whether the existing core pulls out with a control key and has the figure-eight profile; if it does, the 80-035 goes in.
4) Can I just leave the construction cores in permanently instead of buying permanent cores?
You can, but you should not. A construction core is keyed to a master that every sub on the job has had a copy of, and there is no key control on it once the trades leave. The whole point of the 80-035 is that it holds the opening during build-out and then comes out. Budget permanent SFIC cores for handover; the swap itself costs nothing but labor since the hardware stays on the door.
5) One of our construction cores is worn out or the key is lost, can I replace just the core?
Yes, and that is a normal use for the 80-035. Replacement of worn or lost construction cores in existing SFIC hardware is exactly what it covers. Pull the failed core with the control key, drop in the new one, and the lockset, trim and door prep are untouched. Match the keyway, brown or green, to the rest of the cores on the job so the existing construction master still operates it.
6) What is the difference between a small format interchangeable core and a large format removable core?
Plug size and system family. Small format, which is what the Schlage 80-035 is, uses the smaller figure-eight core that is close to an industry-common footprint across brands. Large format interchangeable core is a bigger, manufacturer-specific core, and the two do not swap into the same housing. Sargent's LFIC option is the 10-6300 Signature removable core cylinder, which ships with a factory-installed cam. Decide by what the hardware is prepped for, because the prep is what dictates the core, not the other way around.
7) I need a cylinder for a rim exit device or a mortise lock, not an interchangeable core. What should I be looking at?
Then a construction core is the wrong part. For fixed cylinders, Sargent's Signature line covers it by application: the 10-34 is a 6-pin rim cylinder, the 10-40 is a 6-pin mortise cylinder, and the 10-ALC is a 6-pin deadbolt cylinder assembly, all with protected key control. Buy by where it goes, rim, mortise or deadbolt, since those three bodies are not substitutes for each other.
8) Can I use a Schlage 80-035 core in a Sargent or other brand's SFIC hardware?
Keep the core and the key system in one family. The 80-035 is built for Schlage SFIC locksets and cylinders and is keyed into a Schlage small format system, so that is what it should go into. If the building is on Sargent, buy the Sargent core for it; mixing brands on one master key system is how a facility ends up with two sets of keys and no clean way to master them.
9) Is this a genuine Schlage part or an aftermarket core?
