Schlage LP FSIC 626 SAT – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Is the Schlage ALX FSIC single lever a complete lockset or just the lever itself?
It is lever trim for a Schlage ALX Series cylindrical lock, one single lever, not a complete lock. If a lever on an ALX lock already hung in the door is bent, loose or worn out, this is the replacement part and the chassis and latch stay in the door. If the whole lock is being replaced, or the door is a new opening with no lock in it, order a complete ALX lockset instead.
2) Do I have to order the Schlage ALX single lever left hand or right hand?
There is no hand to call out. The ALX single lever is field reversible, so the same part serves a left or right hand door and the orientation is set at the opening. For anyone stocking spares across a building with mixed swings, that means one part number covers every door rather than two.
3) Will a Schlage ALX lever fit a mortise lock?
No. The ALX Series is a cylindrical, bored lock and this lever is trim for that format only. Mortise locks take mortise trim, which mounts to the lock case through a different spindle and rose arrangement, so an ALX lever will not go on one. Pull the existing lock before ordering: a lock body sitting in a pocket routed into the door edge is mortise and needs mortise trim, while a lock running through two round bores is the cylindrical format this lever belongs to.
4) Does the Schlage ALX FSIC lever have to be keyed, and do I need to give a keyway when I order it?
No keyway and no keying detail to supply. The ALX single lever is supplied non-keyed and suits ALX locks built in the full size interchangeable core format, where the keying lives in the core that drops into the lock rather than in the lever. Keep the core you already have, pull it with the control key, and the lever change does not touch the key system on the building at all.
5) Is Grade 2 hardware enough for office and tenant doors in a commercial building?
For moderate traffic openings, yes. The ALX Series is Grade 2, medium duty, and rated for commercial use, with zinc and steel construction in the lever. Grade 2 is the middle tier: below it is the Grade 3 residential level, above it is Grade 1, which is what most specifiers call for on main entrances, stairwells, schools and other heavy traffic doors. Offices, tenant suite doors, back of house and storage openings are where Grade 2 normally lands.
6) What lever designs can I get on a Schlage ALX single lever?
Ten designs: Athens (ATH), Boardwalk (BRK), Broadway (BRW), Latitude (LAT), Longitude (LON), Omega (OME), Rhodes (RHO), Saturn (SAT), Sparta (SPA) and Tubular (TLR). Design and finish are the two things to pick when ordering, and since the lever is field reversible there is no hand to add. Matching an opening that already has ALX hardware on it is a matter of reading the three letter design code off the existing lock and ordering the same one.
7) Can I match Schlage ALX levers to the satin chrome and oil rubbed bronze hardware already in my building?
Nine finishes cover it: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome and 643E aged bronze. Those numbers are the standard hardware finish designations, so 626 on an ALX lever is calling out the same satin chrome as 626 on the hinges, closers and exit devices already hanging on the floor. Ordering by the number rather than the finish name is how you keep a mixed brand building consistent.
8) Can a Cal-Royal CALDOR238 dormitory dead latch be used instead of a Schlage ALX lever?
Not a swap, they solve different problems. The Cal-Royal CALDOR238 (CAL101) is a dormitory function unit, so it is the part you specify when the opening needs that function. The ALX single lever is non-keyed trim for a Schlage cylindrical lock, so it changes the handle on a lock that is already in the door and does not change what the lock does. Broken lever on an ALX lock, order the lever. Specifying the function of the opening itself, that is a lock decision, not a trim decision.
9) We are pulling a Cal-Royal CALDOR238 dormitory dead latch off an apartment corridor door. Does a Schlage ALX Series single lever go back in as a straight replacement?
Not as a function-for-function swap. The Cal-Royal CALDOR238 CAL101 is a dormitory function unit, and the Schlage ALX Series single lever is a non-keyed lever, so it does not reproduce a dormitory function at that opening. If the door has to keep working the way the CALDOR238 worked, stay with a dormitory function unit. If the opening only needs a lever with no keyed function on a cylindrical prep, the ALX Series single lever is the one to order: Grade 2, medium duty, field reversible, and built in zinc and steel for commercial use.
10) The drawing calls for a dormitory function on the student housing entry doors. Is the Schlage ALX Series single lever the right part for that, or do I need something else?
For a dormitory function you need a unit built to that function, and the Cal-Royal CALDOR238 CAL101 is a dormitory function unit. The Schlage ALX Series single lever is a non-keyed lever, so it answers a different line on the schedule - the openings where the door needs a commercial Grade 2 lever with no keyed function, such as passage-style corridor and utility doors in the same building. Many jobs carry both: dormitory function units on the room entries and the ALX Series single lever where the spec calls for a non-keyed lever.
11) A supplier quoted us a Cal-Royal CALDOR238-26D against our line item for the Schlage ALX Series FSIC single lever. Are those the same class of part?
They are not interchangeable line items. The Cal-Royal CALDOR238 CAL101 is a dormitory function dead latch. The Schlage ALX Series Single Lever, FSIC Full Size Interchangeable Core Lever is a non-keyed lever in the ALX Series, ordered by lever style and finish - Rhodes, Athens, Saturn, Sparta, Omega, Latitude, Longitude, Broadway, Boardwalk and Tubular across finishes including 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome and 643E aged bronze. If your line item was written around the ALX lever style and finish code, a dormitory function dead latch will not satisfy it, and the reverse is true if the schedule called for a dormitory function.
