Schlage 22-001 C 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Which Schlage deadbolts does the 22-001 replacement cylinder fit?
The Schlage 22-001 is the key cylinder for Schlage B100, B250 and B400 E/B deadbolts, and it is a commercial part rather than a residential one. There is no handing to work out: the cylinder is non-handed, so the same part goes into a left or right hand door. If the deadbolt on your opening is a different Schlage series, or another brand entirely, this is not the cylinder for it.
2) The deadbolt on the door is not a Schlage. What cylinder should I order?
The Schlage 22-001 is built for Schlage B100, B250 and B400 E/B deadbolts, so a different deadbolt brand needs a cylinder cut for that lock. Medeco's 1012040 is a 6-pin lazy motion rim cylinder for Kwikset single cylinder deadbolts. The 1065140 is a 5-pin retrofit cylinder for the Arrow JL interconnected lock and for Emtek handleset and deadbolt outside cylinder use, and the 1065244 is a 5-pin rim lazy motion cylinder with an Emtek tailpiece. The 1075127 is a 5-pin rim type lazy motion single cylinder for handlesets and deadbolts. Identify the deadbolt in the door first, then pick the cylinder built for it.
3) Does the Schlage 22-001 deadbolt cylinder come keyed, or do I have to key it myself?
Every version ships 0 bitted, meaning the plug is unpinned and no key cuts have been made. A locksmith pins it to whatever key you want it to run on, which is the point of ordering it this way for a building that already has a key system. Two keys come in the box, and the cuts get put in them when the cylinder is keyed. If you need a cylinder that arrives ready to work out of the box, this is not it.
4) Can I key a Schlage 22-001 cylinder to the same key as the other locks in my building?
That is what the 22-001 is set up for. Order it in the keyway your building already runs and hand it to your locksmith with a sample key: because it comes 0 bitted, it gets pinned to your existing key rather than forcing a second key onto the property. It is a 6-pin cylinder, so it suits a 6-pin master key system. Keyway choices include the letter keyways C, CE, E, EF, F, FG and G, and the numbered keyways C123, C125, C134, C145, C234, C345, S123, S124, S125, S134, S135, S234, S235, S245 and S345. Match the keyway on the cylinder you are pulling out.
5) What finishes does the Schlage 22-001 deadbolt cylinder come in, and will it match my existing hardware?
Five finishes are offered on the 22-001: 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 622 matte black, 626 satin chrome and 643E aged bronze. Those are the standard BHMA finish codes, so read the code off the deadbolt you are working on rather than matching by eye. Schlage builds the cylinder front housing in the finishes that match its locks, which is what keeps a replaced cylinder from standing out against the rest of the trim on the door.
6) I need a mortise or rim cylinder, not a deadbolt cylinder. Is the Schlage 22-001 the right part?
No. The 22-001 is built for the Schlage B100, B250 and B400 E/B deadbolts and will not serve a mortise lock body or a rim exit device. For a mortise lock, look at the Adams Rite 4036 Grade 1 mortise cylinder or the Detex MC65, a 1-1/8 inch 6-pin mortise cylinder cut to the Schlage C keyway. For a rim device, the Corbin Russwin 3070 is a 6-pin rim cylinder housing with a 1-7/8 inch tailpiece. One useful note if the same key has to run everything: the MC65 uses the Schlage C keyway and the 22-001 is available in a C keyway, so a locksmith can pin both to one key.
7) Can I use a Schlage 22-001 cylinder in a knob or lever lock?
No, it is the deadbolt cylinder for the Schlage B100, B250 and B400 E/B. A knob or lever takes a key-in-knob or key-in-lever cylinder, which is a different body and a different tailpiece. The Kaba Ilco 1539 is a universal key-in-knob and lever cylinder, and for Falcon RU and T series levers the Falcon A23161-05 G is a 6-pin G keyway lever cylinder supplied keyed different with two cut keys. If a building is being rekeyed door by door, expect to order the deadbolt cylinders and the lever cylinders as separate line items in the same keyway.
8) Should I use a Schlage 22-001 or an interchangeable core cylinder for a facility I have to rekey often?
The 22-001 is a conventional fixed cylinder: rekeying it means pulling the cylinder and repinning the plug, which is fine when turnover is occasional. Where tenants or staff change constantly, an interchangeable core system lets you swap the core with a control key and leave the lock in the door. The BEST 1C series covers that, with the 1C5 standard 5-pin core, the Peaks 1CB 150 series core and the 1CDF drill resistant patented 7-pin brass core. Note the pin count differs, so an IC system is a decision you make for the whole facility rather than one door at a time, and it does not run on the same pinning as a 6-pin conventional cylinder.
9) Does the Schlage 22-001 cylinder work with an Everest 29 or Primus XP key system?
Schlage builds this cylinder line to support interchangeability between the Everest 29, Primus XP and Classic key systems, and it is offered across the Schlage keyways. The decision you make at order time is the keyway itself, and it has to match the system already in the building. Options run from the single letter keyways C, CE, E, EF, F, FG and G through the numbered keyways such as C123, C145, C345, S123, S135 and S345. Get the keyway from your key records or from the cylinder coming out of the door, since a cylinder in the wrong keyway cannot be pinned onto your key no matter how it is cut.
10) Will a Kaba Ilco 1539 universal cylinder work in a Schlage B-series deadbolt?
The Kaba Ilco 1539 Series is a key-in-knob / lever universal cylinder, so it is made for the cylinder pocket in a knob or lever set, not for a deadbolt. The Schlage 22-001 is a 6-pin deadbolt cylinder for Schlage B100, B250 and B400 E/B deadbolts. Ilco's deadbolt part is the 1549 Series key-in-deadbolt cylinder. Two other Ilco numbers sit in the knob and lever family as well: the 1579 Series is a knob and lever cylinder for Sargent, and the 1599 is a key-in-knob replacement cylinder.
11) The Detex MC65 lists a Schlage C keyway. Can it be used in place of a 22-001?
The Detex MC65 is a mortise cylinder with a Schlage C keyway, 1-1/8 inch, 6-pin, commercial grade, so it runs on the same C key as a Schlage 22-001 ordered in the C keyway. What it does not share is the body. A mortise cylinder threads into a mortise lock case and drives the lock through a cam, while the 22-001 is a deadbolt cylinder for Schlage B100, B250 and B400 E/B deadbolts. A common keyway keeps one key working across the building; the housing and the drive decide whether the part actually goes into the lock.
12) We are standardizing keying across a campus. How does the Schlage 22-001 compare with interchangeable core cylinders?
The Schlage 22-001 is a conventional 6-pin deadbolt cylinder, ordered by Schlage keyway and supplied 0 bitted, so combinating is done at the bench and a rekey means pinning the cylinder. Interchangeable core products are built around a removable core instead: the BEST 1CB 150 Series and the 1CDF drill resistant preferred patented 7-pin brass 150 Series are interchangeable core cylinders, and the BEST 1C Series standard 5-pin core is the core itself. Corbin Russwin's 1080 Series covers the same idea on mortise openings as a 1-1/2 inch 6-pin LFIC mortise cylinder for Schlage L9000 mortise locks.
13) Can a 22-001 cylinder be used on a rim exit device?
The Schlage 22-001 is a deadbolt cylinder for Schlage B100, B250 and B400 E/B deadbolts. A rim exit device takes a rim cylinder, which mounts to a back plate and drives the device through a tailpiece, and tailpiece length is the dimension that has to match: the Corbin Russwin 3070 is a 6-pin rim cylinder housing with a 1-7/8 inch tailpiece. One more part to keep separate is the BEST 12E Series dummy rim cylinder, 1-5/32 inch diameter. It has the look of a rim cylinder but is a dummy, so it belongs where no keyed function is wanted.
14) How does ordering the 22-001 differ from a cylinder that ships keyed different?
The Schlage 22-001 is supplied 0 bitted in every keyway it is offered in, including C, CE, E, EF, F, FG and G, and it comes with 2 keys, so the combination is set at the bench to whatever the building already runs. The Falcon A23161-05 G takes the other route: it is a key in lever cylinder, RU/T Series, 6-pin G keyway, keyed different with 2 cut keys, so it arrives with a combination already in it. Note that the Falcon part is a lever cylinder rather than a deadbolt cylinder, which makes this a keying comparison and not a substitution.
15) Some of our doors have Schlage B-series deadbolts and others have mortise locks. Does one cylinder cover both?
No. The Schlage 22-001 is a 6-pin deadbolt cylinder for Schlage B100, B250 and B400 E/B deadbolts, and it is non-handed, so it goes into those deadbolts on either hand of door. A mortise lock takes a threaded mortise cylinder specified by length and cam: the Corbin Russwin 1000 Grade 1 Series mortise cylinder is 1-1/2 inch length with an A02 straight cam, and the 1070 Grade 1 Series 6-pin mortise housing is 1-1/4 inch with an A01 cloverleaf cam. Count the deadbolt openings and the mortise openings separately, since each takes its own part number.
