Schlage 22-645 C 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) I need a replacement deadbolt cylinder but the lock is not a Schlage B500. What else is there?
The 22-645 is built around the Schlage B500 deadbolt and is not the part for other locks. For a deadbolt on another platform, the Kaba Ilco 1549 Series key-in-deadbolt cylinder is the general replacement, and the Medeco 1012040 is a 6-pin lazy motion rim cylinder made for Kwikset single cylinder deadbolts. If what you are actually recylindering is a knob or lever lock rather than a deadbolt, the Kaba Ilco 1539 Series universal key-in-knob and lever cylinder is the part to look at.
2) My B500 deadbolt has a thumbturn on the inside. Is the 22-645 the right replacement cylinder?
No. The 22-645 is the double cylinder part, meant for B500 deadbolts that take a key on both faces. A deadbolt with a thumbturn inside is a single cylinder unit and needs the single cylinder replacement instead. Check the inside face before ordering: a keyhole means double cylinder, a turn knob means single.
3) How many 22-645 cylinders do I need to replace both sides of a double cylinder deadbolt?
Two. A double cylinder deadbolt carries a cylinder on each face, and the 22-645 is a single cylinder supplied with 2 keys. Order one if you are only changing the outside, two if the whole lock is being recylindered. Keep both on the same keyway so one key runs the door from either side.
4) What finishes does the Schlage 22-645 deadbolt cylinder come in?
Four: 606 satin brass, 622 matte black, 626 satin chrome and 643E aged bronze. Only the cylinder face shows once it is installed, so match it to the B500 deadbolt trim it sits in rather than to the lever or closer elsewhere on the door. On a double cylinder deadbolt both cylinders are visible, one from each side, so order the pair in the same finish unless the two faces of that opening are deliberately different.
5) Which Schlage keyway do I pick for the 22-645 cylinder, and can I key a whole building alike with them?
Match the keyway to the keys already in service at the property, not to preference. The single-letter sections C, CE, E, EF, F and G are offered, plus multi-section choices in the C and S families including C123, C124, C134, C145, C234, C245, C345, S123, S124, S135, S145, S234, S235, S245 and S345. All are 6-pin. Because every one arrives 0-bitted, a locksmith can pin a batch keyed alike or bring them into an existing master key system, provided they are all ordered on the same section.
6) Will a Schlage 22-645 cylinder fit a 2 inch thick door?
Not as supplied. The 22-645 covers 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors, which is standard commercial and older interior thickness. Schlage's modular cylinder platform handles thicker doors through longer rear housing lengths, six of which are offered, so a thick door needs the housing length matched to it rather than this configuration.
7) Can I use a Schlage C keyway mortise cylinder instead of the 22-645?
No, and the matching keyway is what makes this mistake easy. A mortise cylinder threads into a mortise lock body; a deadbolt cylinder mounts in the deadbolt chassis. The Detex MC65 is a 1-1/8 inch 6-pin mortise cylinder cut for the Schlage C keyway, so it will run on the same C section key, but it will not go into a B500 deadbolt. Same key family, different housing and different lock.
8) We are standardizing our facility on interchangeable core. Does the Schlage 22-645 fit that program?
It does not. The 22-645 is a conventional pinned 6-pin cylinder for B500 deadbolts, rekeyed by pulling and repinning it. Interchangeable core is a separate platform: a BEST 1CB 150 Series interchangeable core cylinder or a BEST 1C Series core comes out with a control key, which is what makes turning over a whole facility fast after a staff change. Running both on one property works, but they are keyed and serviced as two different systems.
9) Is the Schlage 22-645 a commercial cylinder or a residential one?
Commercial. It is the factory replacement cylinder for the Schlage B500 commercial deadbolt line, supplied in 6-pin, which is what lets it sit inside a masterkeyed commercial system rather than a standalone 5-pin residential lock. That matters on a property where the deadbolts have to answer to a building master or a floor key.
10) What deadbolt cylinder from another manufacturer does the same job as the Schlage 22-645?
The Schlage 22-645 is a 6-pin deadbolt cylinder matched to Schlage B500 double cylinder deadbolts, non-handed, for doors 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch thick, and it comes with 2 keys. The nearest cross-brand counterpart is the Kaba Ilco 1549, a key-in-deadbolt cylinder with a deadbolt function. The difference that decides the order is the lock it drops into: the 22-645 is built specifically for the B500 double cylinder deadbolt, while the Ilco 1549 is a general key-in-deadbolt series. If the door already carries a Schlage B500, the 22-645 is the direct part; if it carries a deadbolt of another make, the 1549 family is where to look.
11) The opening has a mortise lock rather than a B500 deadbolt - what cylinder takes the place of the 22-645 there?
The Schlage 22-645 is a deadbolt cylinder for Schlage B500 double cylinder deadbolts, so a mortise lock case calls for a mortise cylinder instead. Corbin Russwin CR1000-112 is a Grade 1 mortise cylinder, 1-1/2 inch length, with an A02 straight cam. Corbin Russwin CR1070-114-A01 is a Grade 1 1-1/4 inch 6-pin mortise housing with an A01 cloverleaf cam. Detex MC65 is a 1-1/8 inch 6-pin commercial grade mortise cylinder in the Schlage C keyway. With a mortise cylinder the two things to confirm are cylinder length against the lock case and door, and cam style, neither of which applies to the 22-645 because the B500 sets those for you.
12) Our building has Schlage L9000 mortise locks alongside the B500 deadbolts - does the 22-645 cover both?
No. The Schlage 22-645 is a 6-pin deadbolt cylinder built for Schlage B500 double cylinder deadbolts, and a mortise lock case takes a mortise cylinder with the correct cam. For an L9000 mortise lock, the Corbin Russwin CR1080-112-A01 is a 1-1/2 inch large format interchangeable core mortise cylinder, 6-pin, made for Schlage L9000 mortise locks with an A01 Schlage L cam. Note that the 1080 is an interchangeable core cylinder while the 22-645 is a conventional pinned cylinder, so the two are keyed and serviced by different methods even in the same building.
13) Can I use the Schlage 22-645 in a rim exit device?
No. The Schlage 22-645 is a deadbolt cylinder for Schlage B500 double cylinder deadbolts, and a rim device needs a rim cylinder with the correct tailpiece length. The Corbin Russwin 3070-178 is a 6-pin rim cylinder housing with a 1-7/8 inch tailpiece, which is the form a rim device takes. The tailpiece is the whole point of the difference: a rim cylinder drives the device chassis through the door, while the 22-645 is dimensioned for the B500 deadbolt body on doors 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch.
14) A BEST 12E dummy rim cylinder came up in the same search - is that an alternative to the 22-645?
They do opposite jobs. The Schlage 22-645 is keyed, has a double cylinder function, and ships with 2 keys, so it operates the bolt from the key. The BEST 12E series dummy rim cylinder, 1-5/32 inch diameter, is a dummy: it fills a cylinder prep and dresses the opening without key operation. If the door needs to lock and unlock by key on a Schlage B500 double cylinder deadbolt, the 22-645 is the part; a dummy is for a prep that is being covered rather than operated.
15) Adams Rite cylinder pulls show up next to deadbolt cylinders - do they substitute for the 22-645?
They serve a different door. The Schlage 22-645 is a 6-pin cylinder for Schlage B500 double cylinder deadbolts on doors 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch. The Adams Rite 4025 is a five pin tumbler cylinder pull with through-screws designed for use with the Adams Rite MS1847 deadlock and deadlatch, and the 4024 is the same idea with trim plate mounting for the MS1847. The 4026 is a five pin tumbler cylinder pull for wood door applications with the Adams Rite 5017 wood door deadlock and deadlatch. All three are pull assemblies carrying a cylinder for an Adams Rite lock body, not a drop-in cylinder for a Schlage B500 deadbolt.
16) We have aluminum storefront doors as well as wood doors - does the 22-645 work on the storefront?
The Schlage 22-645 is specified for doors 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch thick and for Schlage B500 double cylinder deadbolts, which is a wood or hollow metal door application rather than a narrow stile aluminum one. For the storefront side, the Adams Rite 4036 is a Grade 1 mortise cylinder with five-pin security and a 1/2 inch minimum door thickness, which is the thin-stile range. The Adams Rite 4024 and 4025 cylinder pulls are the other storefront route, both designed for use with the Adams Rite MS1847 deadlock and deadlatch.
17) We want to rekey by pulling a core instead of pinning cylinders - what is the alternative to the 22-645?
The Schlage 22-645 is a 6-pin conventional deadbolt cylinder for Schlage B500 double cylinder deadbolts, keyed and supplied with 2 keys, and rekeying it means repinning the cylinder. An interchangeable core system changes that workflow: the BEST 1CB is a Peaks 150 series interchangeable core cylinder, the BEST 1C5 is a standard 5-pin cylinder core, and the BEST 1CDF is a drill resistant preferred patented interchangeable core, 7-pin, brass, in the 150 series. Those commit the facility to a core-based key system across the openings that accept them, which is a different standardization decision from staying with pinned Schlage cylinders on the B500 deadbolts.
18) The deadbolts take the 22-645 - what cylinder covers the knobs and levers on the same key system?
The Schlage 22-645 is a deadbolt cylinder for Schlage B500 double cylinder deadbolts and is offered in a wide keyway spread including C and G, supplied 0 bitted so a locksmith cuts to the existing system. Knobs and levers take a different cylinder body. The Falcon A23161-05 G is a key in lever cylinder, RU/T series, 6-pin G keyway, keyed different, with 2 cut keys. The Kaba Ilco 1599 is a key-in-knob replacement cylinder and the Kaba Ilco 1539 is a key-in-knob and lever universal cylinder. For Sargent knobs and levers, the Kaba Ilco 1579 is the matching part.
19) Will the Schlage 22-645 drop into a Kwikset or Emtek deadbolt?
No. The Schlage 22-645 is a 6-pin cylinder matched to Schlage B500 double cylinder deadbolts with a double cylinder function, meaning key operation on both sides. Those other brands take their own retrofit cylinders. The Medeco 1012040 is a 6-pin lazy motion rim cylinder for Kwikset single cylinder deadbolts. The Medeco 1065244 is a 5-pin rim lazy motion rim type cylinder with an Emtek tailpiece, the Medeco 1065140 is a 5-pin retrofit cylinder for Arrow JL interconnected locks and the Emtek handleset and deadbolt outside cylinder, and the Emtek CY4 is the Emtek cylinder itself. Watch the function as well as the brand: those Medeco parts serve single cylinder deadbolts and handlesets, while the 22-645 is the double cylinder arrangement.
20) How does the pin count of the 22-645 compare with the other cylinders we might spec?
The Schlage 22-645 is a 6-pin cylinder. Among the cross-brand parts, the Detex MC65 is also 6-pin in a Schlage C keyway mortise body, the Corbin Russwin CR1070-114-A01 is a 6-pin mortise housing, the Corbin Russwin 3070-178 is a 6-pin rim housing, and the Falcon A23161-05 G is a 6-pin key in lever cylinder. Five-pin parts include the Adams Rite 4036 mortise cylinder, the BEST 1C5 standard 5-pin core, and the Medeco 1075127 rim type lazy motion single cylinder for handlesets and deadbolts. The BEST 1CDF runs 7-pin as a patented interchangeable core. Pin count has to agree with the key system the building already runs, so match it to the existing keys before mixing bodies.
21) If the door only needs a key on the outside, is the 22-645 still the right cylinder?
The Schlage 22-645 is built for the double cylinder arrangement, keyed on both sides of a Schlage B500 deadbolt, so a single cylinder opening is a different part. On the cross-brand side, the Medeco 1075127 is a 5-pin rim type lazy motion single cylinder for handlesets and deadbolts, and the Medeco 1012040 is a 6-pin lazy motion rim cylinder for Kwikset single cylinder deadbolts. The choice usually follows egress rather than preference: double cylinder means a key is needed to exit, which is why it turns up on doors with glass beside the bolt, and single cylinder leaves a thumbturn inside.
