Schlage 22-003 S123 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What door thickness does the Schlage 22-003 deadbolt cylinder cover?
Doors from 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inches. That covers standard commercial 1-3/4 inch openings and the thinner 1-3/8 inch interior doors you still find in older buildings. Thicker doors than that are outside the range this cylinder is set up for.
2) Can I get the Schlage 22-003 keyed alike to the other deadbolts in my building?
Yes. Keying is a required choice when you order: KD keyed different, which is the standard, or KA keyed alike so a group of locks all run on one key. There's also a key code field if you're matching an existing system, and a less-cylinder option if you're supplying your own. Two cut keys come with the cylinder.
3) Which Schlage keyway do I order the 22-003 in, and can it match an existing Everest or Primus system?
Twenty-six keyways are offered, all supplied 0-bitted: the standard C and CE, the E, EF, F, FG and G keyways, the full C123 through C345 range, and the S123 through S345 range. Schlage's modular cylinder platform supports interchangeability across Everest 29, Primus XP and Classic key systems. Pick the keyway that matches the system already on your doors, and cut the 0-bitted cylinder to your existing key change.
4) My deadbolt key is worn out but the bolt still throws fine. Do I replace the whole deadbolt or just the cylinder?
Just the cylinder, if the lock is a Schlage B500 single cylinder deadbolt. The 22-003 is sold as a replacement part for exactly that, so a worn or compromised key system, a lost key, or a rekey to a new master gets handled by swapping the cylinder and leaving the deadbolt body, bolt and strike in the door. No new prep, no new hole.
5) Is the Schlage 22-003 a mortise cylinder? Can I use it in a mortise lock or an exit device rim?
No. This is a deadbolt cylinder for B500 single cylinder deadbolts, not a mortise or rim cylinder, and it isn't interchangeable with them. For a mortise lock, a Corbin Russwin 1000 Series Grade 1 mortise cylinder at 1-1/2 inch with an A02 straight cam or the 1070 at 1-1/4 inch with an A01 cloverleaf cam is the sort of part you want; the Detex MC65 is a 1-1/8 inch 6-pin mortise cylinder in Schlage C keyway. For a rim application, the Corbin Russwin 3070 is a 6-pin rim cylinder housing with a 1-7/8 inch tailpiece.
6) What is the difference between the Schlage 22-003 deadbolt cylinder and the Kaba Ilco 1549 key-in-deadbolt cylinder?
Both are deadbolt cylinders. The Schlage 22-003 is a 6-pin modular cylinder built for Schlage B500 single cylinder deadbolts, and it comes with 2 keys. The Kaba Ilco 1549 Series is a key-in-deadbolt cylinder rather than a Schlage-specific part, so it is the one to look at when the deadbolt on the door is not a Schlage B500. If you are keeping a Schlage keyway and a Schlage B500 body, the 22-003 is the matching cylinder.
7) We key our facility on BEST interchangeable cores. Is the Schlage 22-003 the right cylinder for that system?
The 22-003 is a fixed 6-pin cylinder supplied in Schlage keyways including the C, E, F, G and Everest S-series keyways, so it belongs to a Schlage key system rather than an interchangeable core system. For a facility standardized on removable cores, the BEST 1CB Peaks 150 Series interchangeable core cylinder or the BEST 1CDF drill resistant patented 7-pin brass 150 Series core are the interchangeable-core parts; the BEST 1C Series is a standard 5-pin core.
8) Does the Schlage 22-003 cylinder have a handing, or do I have to specify left or right?
Non-handed. The same cylinder serves a left or right hand door, so you don't specify handing on the order and you can stock one part for openings that swing either way.
9) Is the Schlage 22-003 rated for commercial traffic or is it a residential part?
Commercial. It's a 6-pin cylinder, not the 5-pin you typically see on residential hardware, and the extra chamber gives more key changes for a building where you're running a real keying schedule across many openings.
10) I want to standardize on interchangeable core so I can rekey without pulling cylinders. Is the Schlage 22-003 an IC cylinder?
It isn't. The 22-003 is a conventional pinned cylinder, keyed at the factory or by your locksmith, so a rekey means pinning the cylinder rather than swapping a core. If small format interchangeable core is what you want across a facility, look at BEST's 1C Series standard 5-pin core, the Peaks 1CB 150 Series core, or the drill resistant 1CDF 7-pin brass 150 Series core.
11) Can I order the Schlage 22-003 without a cylinder if I'm supplying my own keying?
Yes. Keying includes a less cylinder option alongside KD and KA, which is what you pick when your locksmith is pinning to an existing system or you're pulling a core from your own stock. Otherwise the cylinder arrives 0-bitted in whichever of the 26 keyways you choose, ready to cut to your key change.
12) Can I use the Schlage 22-003 on a key-in-lever or key-in-knob lock?
The 22-003 is supplied as a deadbolt cylinder for Schlage B500 single cylinder deadbolts. For a key-in-lever or key-in-knob body, the parts made for that application are the Falcon A23161-05 G key-in-lever cylinder, a RU/T Series 6-pin G keyway cylinder keyed different with 2 cut keys, the Kaba Ilco 1539 Series key-in-knob and lever universal cylinder, the Kaba Ilco 1579 knob and lever cylinder for Sargent, and the Kaba Ilco 1599 key-in-knob replacement cylinder.
13) The opening needs a rim cylinder behind an exit device. Is the Schlage 22-003 the right part?
No. The 22-003 is the single cylinder deadbolt cylinder for Schlage B500 deadbolts. For rim applications, the Corbin Russwin 3070 is a 6-pin rim cylinder housing with a 1-7/8 inch tailpiece, and the Medeco 1075127 is a 5-pin rim type lazy motion single cylinder for handlesets and deadbolts. If the door only needs a keyed appearance with no operation behind it, the BEST 12E Series dummy rim cylinder with a 1-5/32 inch diameter fills the hole.
14) Is there a Grade 1 rated mortise cylinder alternative for a thin metal door where the 22-003 will not fit?
The Schlage 22-003 is dimensioned for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch thick. The Adams Rite 4036 mortise cylinder is a five-pin Grade 1 cylinder in the 4036 Series with a 1/2 inch minimum door thickness, which is the range that covers thin metal and narrow stile doors.
15) I want a Schlage C keyway cylinder but the lock is a mortise body. What matches the keyway without switching key systems?
The Detex MC65 is a mortise cylinder supplied in the Schlage C keyway, 1-1/8 inch, 6-pin commercial grade, so it keys into an existing Schlage C system on a mortise opening. The Schlage 22-003 is offered in the C keyway as well, including C123 through C345 and the Everest S-series keyways, and it serves the B500 deadbolt side of the same key system.
16) What finishes does the Schlage 22-003 come in to match my existing deadbolt trim?
Four: 606 satin brass, 622 matte black, 626 satin chrome, and 643E aged bronze. 626 satin chrome is the usual commercial standard, so if you're standardizing a building of B500 deadbolts that's typically the match.
17) What is the alternative to the Schlage 22-003 for a wood door deadlock rather than a B500 deadbolt?
The Adams Rite 4026 is a five pin tumbler cylinder pull designed for the Adams Rite 5017 wood door deadlock and deadlatch, which is the part for that application. The Schlage 22-003 is a non-handed 6-pin single cylinder for Schlage B500 deadbolts on doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch thick.
