Schlage 22-069 C 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) My deadbolt isn't a Schlage B561, what replacement cylinder do I need?
Then the 22-069 is the wrong part, because it is specified for Schlage B561 one-way deadbolts. For other deadbolts, the Kaba Ilco 1549 Series key-in-deadbolt cylinder is the general-purpose replacement to look at, and on a Kwikset single cylinder deadbolt the Medeco 1012040 is a 6-pin lazy motion rim cylinder made for that application. Identify the deadbolt brand and model first, since deadbolt cylinders are chosen by the lock they go into rather than by a common size.
2) Does the Schlage 22-069 deadbolt cylinder come keyed, or does a locksmith have to key it?
Both versions of the 22-069 are supplied 0 bitted, so the cylinder arrives without being cut to any key system. A locksmith pins it to your bitting, which is what lets you bring the B561 deadbolt onto the key system already running in the building rather than adding another separate key. Two keys come with the cylinder.
3) Schlage 22-069 in C keyway or S123 keyway, which one do I order?
Order whichever keyway your existing Schlage keys are cut on, because a key from one Schlage keyway will not enter a different one. The 22-069 is offered in C keyway and in S123 keyway. C is Schlage's standard Classic keyway and is what most existing Schlage systems in the field run on, so if nobody can tell you what the building uses, take a key to a locksmith and have the keyway read before ordering. Since both come 0 bitted, either one can be pinned keyed alike with your other doors or brought into an existing master system.
4) Will a Schlage 22-069 cylinder match the finish of the other hardware on my doors?
The 22-069 is supplied in 626 satin chrome, the standard commercial finish, so it blends with 626 levers, exit trim and deadbolt roses. On an opening finished in brass or bronze (605, 612, 613) the cylinder face will read as a different colour, since satin chrome is the only finish offered on this cylinder. On a B561 the cylinder face is the visible part from the keyed side, so this is worth settling before you order a run of them for a building.
5) Can I use a Schlage 22-069 cylinder in a mortise lock or a rim exit device?
No. The 22-069 is a deadbolt cylinder built for Schlage B561 one-way deadbolts, and it will not serve a mortise lock or a rim exit device. For a mortise lock, a mortise cylinder such as the Corbin Russwin 1000 Grade 1 Series 1-1/2 inch with an A02 straight cam is the right type, and for an exit device you want a rim cylinder housing like the Corbin Russwin 3070 6-pin with a 1-7/8 inch tailpiece. Those are different cylinder formats, not different finishes of the same part.
6) I run a Schlage C key system, what cylinder do I use for the mortise locks on the same key?
The 22-069 covers the B561 deadbolts on a C keyway, but it will not fit a mortise lock. To keep the mortise openings on the same key, the Detex MC65 is a 1-1/8 inch 6-pin commercial mortise cylinder cut on the Schlage C keyway, so it takes the same key blank. Keeping one keyway across the building is what makes a single master or grand master key possible; mixing keyways is what breaks it.
7) What exactly is the Schlage 22-069, is it the whole deadbolt or just the key part?
Just the keyed cylinder. The 22-069 is the 6-pin cylinder that goes into a Schlage B561 one-way deadbolt, sold as a replacement part, so it is what you order when the key no longer turns smoothly, when a key has gone missing, or when a unit turns over and the door needs rekeying. It is non-handed and commercial. If the bolt itself is damaged or the deadbolt body is worn out, you need the B561 deadbolt, not this cylinder.
8) What is the closest cross-brand equivalent to the Schlage 22-069 deadbolt cylinder?
The Schlage 22-069 is a 6-pin commercial cylinder matched to Schlage B561 one-way deadbolts, supplied non-handed with two keys. The nearest counterpart from another manufacturer by job is the Kaba Ilco 1549 series key-in-deadbolt cylinder, which Ilco lists with a deadbolt product function. The distinction that decides the order is fit rather than description: the 22-069 is built around Schlage's B561 deadbolt and is ordered by keyway, C or S123, while the 1549 is Ilco's own deadbolt cylinder series. If the B561 is already hanging in the door, the Schlage part is the one made for that lock body.
9) The Detex MC65 is also a 6-pin cylinder in the Schlage C keyway. Can it go into a B561 deadbolt instead of the 22-069?
Same keyway family, different cylinder type. The Detex MC65 is a mortise cylinder, 1-1/8 inch, 6-pin, cut to the Schlage C keyway and built to thread into a mortise lock case. The Schlage 22-069 is the 6-pin cylinder specified for Schlage B561 one-way deadbolts and is ordered in either the C or the S123 keyway. The useful overlap is keying, not mounting: a building standardized on the Schlage C keyway can carry the MC65 for its mortise locks and the 22-069 for its B561 deadbolts on one key system, but the two are not interchangeable in the same prep.
10) We want maintenance to be able to swap keying without pinning cylinders. What is the alternative to a fixed cylinder like the Schlage 22-069?
The Schlage 22-069 is a keyed 6-pin replacement cylinder for B561 one-way deadbolts, ordered 0-bitted in the C or S123 keyway so the shop pins it to the building's system. The other route is an interchangeable core platform, where the core pulls with a control key and goes back in already keyed. BEST covers that with the 1C series standard 5-pin cylinder core, the Peaks 1CB 150 series interchangeable core cylinder, and the 1CDF drill resistant preferred patented interchangeable core in 7-pin brass, 150 series. The difference is where the work happens: an interchangeable core system needs core-prepped hardware throughout the facility, while the 22-069 serves the B561 deadbolts already installed.
11) The opening is a narrow stile aluminum storefront door, not a door carrying a Schlage B561. What cylinder belongs there?
The Schlage 22-069 is matched to Schlage B561 one-way deadbolts, so it follows that lock. Aluminum storefront is Adams Rite territory: the Adams Rite 4036 mortise cylinder is a five-pin Grade 1 cylinder in the 4036 series with a 1/2 inch minimum door thickness, which is the stile range storefront works in. Where the door carries an MS1847 deadlock or deadlatch, the cylinder is part of a pull: the Adams Rite 4024 cylinder pull mounts with a trim plate and the 4025 five pin tumbler cylinder pull mounts with through-screws, both for the MS1847. For a wood door running the Adams Rite 5017 deadlock or deadlatch, the 4026 five pin tumbler cylinder pull is the wood door version.
12) How does the Schlage 22-069 differ from the Corbin Russwin mortise cylinders that are also sold 6-pin?
They are specified on different axes. The Corbin Russwin mortise cylinders are defined by length and cam: the 1070 Grade 1 series is a 1-1/4 inch 6-pin mortise housing with an A01 cloverleaf cam, the 1000 Grade 1 series is a 1-1/2 inch mortise cylinder with an A02 straight cam, and the 1080 Grade 1 series is a 1-1/2 inch large format interchangeable core mortise cylinder, 6-pin, for Schlage L9000 mortise locks with an A01 Schlage L cam. The Schlage 22-069 is a 6-pin deadbolt cylinder for Schlage B561 one-way deadbolts, and what is chosen on it is keyway and finish, C or S123 keyway in 626 satin chrome. Cam length is a mortise question; the 22-069 answers a deadbolt question.
13) Is a rim cylinder such as the Corbin Russwin 3070 an option for a B561 deadbolt?
Those are two different mounting families. The Corbin Russwin 3070 is a 6-pin rim cylinder housing in the 3000 series with a 1-7/8 inch tailpiece, and the tailpiece length is the spec that matters because it has to reach the lock body mounted on the back face of the door. The Schlage 22-069 is the 6-pin cylinder specified for Schlage B561 one-way deadbolts and is selected by keyway rather than by tailpiece length. Pin count matching across the two does not make them interchangeable in the same prep.
14) Some of our units have Kwikset deadbolts rather than Schlage B561s. Is the 22-069 the right cylinder for those too?
No, the Schlage 22-069 is built for Schlage B561 one-way deadbolts. For Kwikset single cylinder deadbolts the counterpart is the Medeco 1012040, a 6-pin lazy motion rim cylinder for Kwikset single cylinder deadbolts. Medeco also offers the 1075127, a 5-pin rim type lazy motion single cylinder for handlesets and deadbolts, and the 1065140, a 5-pin retrofit cylinder for the Arrow JL interconnected lock and for Emtek handleset and deadbolt outside cylinders. On a mixed property the cylinder follows the deadbolt that is already in the door, so the count of each deadbolt make on site is what sets the order.
15) A door no longer needs to be keyed on that side. Is a dummy cylinder a substitute for the 22-069?
A dummy cylinder fills the hole and operates nothing. The BEST 12E series dummy rim cylinder is a 1-5/32 inch diameter dummy rim cylinder in the 12E series, made to occupy a rim prep with the appearance of a cylinder. The Schlage 22-069 is a working 6-pin commercial cylinder for Schlage B561 one-way deadbolts, supplied with two keys in 626 satin chrome, 0-bitted in either the C or the S123 keyway so it can be pinned into the building's key system. If the door still has to lock and unlock by key on that side, the dummy is not the part.
16) Our facility is standardized on 6-pin. Which retrofit cylinders match that pin count and which run 5-pin?
The Schlage 22-069 is 6-pin. Also 6-pin: the Detex MC65 mortise cylinder, 1-1/8 inch, Schlage C keyway; the Corbin Russwin 3070 rim cylinder housing with a 1-7/8 inch tailpiece; the Corbin Russwin 1070 Grade 1 series 1-1/4 inch mortise housing with an A01 cloverleaf cam; the Corbin Russwin 1080 Grade 1 series 1-1/2 inch LFIC mortise cylinder for Schlage L9000 locks; the Falcon A23161-05 G key in lever cylinder in a 6-pin G keyway; and the Medeco 1012040 lazy motion rim cylinder for Kwikset single cylinder deadbolts. Running 5-pin: the Adams Rite 4025 and 4026 five pin tumbler cylinder pulls, the Adams Rite 4036 mortise cylinder, the BEST 1C standard cylinder core, and the Medeco 1065140, 1065244 and 1075127. The BEST 1CDF interchangeable core is 7-pin. Pin count is a keying decision, so it is worth settling before the mounting type.
