Schlage L9071B02A626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Schlage L9071B classroom security mortise lock fit a 1-3/4 inch door with a 2-3/4 inch backset?
That is exactly the opening it is built for. The L9071B is a 2-3/4 inch backset mortise lock for 1-3/4 inch doors, and 1-3/4 inches is the only thickness in its range, so it is not the part for a 1-3/8 inch older interior door. The lock body mortises into the edge of the door, so the door needs a mortise pocket, not a cylindrical bore.
2) What does classroom security function do on a Schlage L9071B, and how is it different from plain classroom function?
Classroom security means both sides are keyed for locking, and the inside lever never locks. The latchbolt retracts from either side, by key or by lever. To lock it, you depress the inside lever and turn the key to engage the holdback; the auxiliary latch deadlocks the latchbolt when locked. Inside is always free for egress. The practical difference from standard classroom function is that a teacher can secure the door from inside the room without stepping into the corridor, which is why schools spec it for lockdown.
3) Does the L9071B mortise lock come with a core, or do I have to order the SFIC separately?
It ships less core. The L9071B is set up for a small format interchangeable core, and the core is not included, so a locksmith or facility keying its own system needs to supply the SFIC and control key to match the existing keyway. Order the core alongside the lock or the door will hang unkeyed.
4) Do I need to specify handing when I order a Schlage L9071B mortise lock?
No handing to specify. The L9071B is reversible, so one part number covers left and right hand openings and a property manager stocking spares only has to carry one lock for both swings.
5) Will the L9071B drop into my existing ANSI strike prep in the frame?
The lock uses a standard ANSI strike, 4-7/8 by 1-1/4 inch lip, and the latch faceplate is 1-1/4 by 8 inches. If the frame already carries an ANSI 4-7/8 inch strike prep and the door has an existing mortise pocket with an 8 inch faceplate cutout, it goes back into the same prep. If the old lock used a T-strike or a smaller faceplate, expect frame and edge work.
6) What lever and rose choices do I have to pick from on the Schlage L9071B, and are they all the same finish?
Four lever designs, 02, 06, 07 and 17, each available with an A wrought rose or a B wrought rose, for eight combinations in total. All of them are 626 satin chrome. If you are matching levers already hung on other openings in the building, the lever number is the thing to match; the rose letter changes the trim plate, not the lever.
7) How far does the lever project off the door face, and how big is the rose?
The lever runs 4-3/4 inches long with a 2-13/16 inch projection, on a 2-1/8 inch diameter rose. That projection matters in a tight corridor or where the door swings against a wall or an adjacent leaf, and the 2-1/8 inch rose tells you how much of the old trim footprint gets covered on a retrofit.
8) Is a mortise lock like the L9071B the right choice, or should I use a cylindrical lever lock for a classroom?
A mortise lock is the choice when the door is a commercial 1-3/4 inch leaf with an existing mortise pocket, or when you want the deadlocking auxiliary latch and the two-sided keying that classroom security function needs. It mortises into the edge of the door, which means a deep pocket cut. A cylindrical lever lock only needs a bored hole and is faster to install on a door with no pocket, but it will not give you this function set. On a labeled 3 hour opening, the L9071B is already UL Listed for it.
9) What is the Schlage L9071B lock and trim actually made of?
Zinc and steel through the assembly, with a zinc base trim in 626 satin chrome. Grade 1 certification to A156.13 is the number that speaks to cycle durability on a high traffic classroom or corridor door, and 626 satin chrome is the standard institutional finish, so it matches most existing school and healthcare hardware.
