1) How does the Schlage L9082B institution function actually work on a door?
The institution function locks both sides all the time. The lever or knob on each side is always inoperative, and the latchbolt is retracted only by key from either side. An auxiliary latch deadlocks the latchbolt when the door is closed. Use it where nobody should be able to open the door by hand from either direction, such as utility rooms, mechanical spaces, or secured corridors in institutional buildings.
2) Will the L9082B mortise lock fit a 1-3/8 inch door?
No. The L9082B is built for 1-3/4 inch doors only, with a 2-3/4 inch backset. Thinner doors need a different lock; 1-3/4 inch is the standard commercial thickness, so most hollow metal and solid core commercial openings will take it.
3) Does the L9082B come with a cylinder, and what core does it take?
It ships less core. The L9082B is prepped for a small format interchangeable core, and you supply the SFIC core keyed to your system. Plan on ordering cores separately, one for each side since the function is keyed both sides.
4) Is the Schlage L9082B fire rated and code compliant for a school or hospital?
Fire rated, UL listed for a 3-hour fire door, and UL/cUL listed for A label single doors up to 4 ft x 10 ft and pairs up to 8 ft x 10 ft. The L9000 body is tested and certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Grade 1 security and operational, meets ADA requirements, and meets the Buy American Act. Note the security grade with an interchangeable core cylinder is Grade 2; a concealed shell cylinder holds A156.13 Grade 1 operational and security.
5) Will the L9082B drop into an existing ANSI mortise prep and strike?
It uses the standard ANSI prep: a 1-1/4 x 8 inch latch faceplate and a 4-7/8 x 1-1/4 inch lip ANSI strike, with a 2-3/4 inch backset. If the door and frame were prepped for a standard ANSI mortise lock at that backset, the body goes into the same pocket. Check that the existing frame strike matches the 4-7/8 inch ANSI dimension rather than a T-strike before swapping.
6) Do I have to order the L9082B handed?
No handing to specify. The lock is reversible, so one part number covers left and right hand openings.
7) What lever and rose choices are there on the L9082B, and what finish?
Two lever designs, 06 and 07, each with an A or B wrought rose. All four combinations come in 626 satin chrome. The 07 lever measures 4-5/8 inches long with a 2-7/8 inch projection, and the rose is 2-1/8 inches in diameter.
8) Can I upgrade the L9082B cylinder to a high security key system?
Yes. A UL437 listed locking cylinder is available for the L series by specifying a Primus 20-500 Series cylinder in place of the standard core.
9) What is the L9082B lock made of, and will it hold up to heavy institutional traffic?
Zinc and steel construction with a zinc base trim in satin chrome. The lock body mortises into the edge of the door rather than bolting through a bored hole, which is why mortise locks are specified over cylindrical ones on high traffic institutional openings. It carries ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Grade 1 operational certification.
10) Is the L9082B lever ADA compliant for a school corridor?
The L series levers meet ADA requirements, and all levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch (64 mm) or less comply with the California Referenced Standards Code. Keep in mind the institution function keeps both levers inoperative at all times, so it is not appropriate on an egress door that needs free exit.
