Institution function means both sides stay locked at all times. The levers on both sides are always inoperative, and the latchbolt is retracted by key from either side only. An auxiliary latch deadlocks the latchbolt when the door is closed. That's exactly what it's built for. The L9082R uses a 2-3/4 inch backset and is specified for 1-3/4 inch doors, the standard commercial thickness. The lock body mortises into the edge of the door, so the door has to be prepped for a mortise lock body, not a cylindrical bore. Latch faceplate is 1-1/4 by 8 inches and it ships with an ANSI strike, 4-7/8 by 1-1/4 inch lip.
3) Does the Schlage L9082R work on a left hand or right hand door?
Either. The lock is reversible, so the same part covers left hand, right hand, and the reverse bevel versions. You do not have to specify handing when you order it.
4) What keyway and cylinder does the Schlage L9082R take, and can I put it on my existing master key system?
It's set up for a large format interchangeable core in the Schlage C keyway, 6 pin. It's a Grade 1 commercial mortise lock built on zinc and steel, ANSI/BHMA A156.13-2012 certified. Grade 1 is the heaviest duty tier in that standard and is what schools, hospitals, and government facilities normally specify. The mortise body sits inside the door edge rather than hanging on a through-bore, which is why these hold up in abusive openings.
7) What is the difference between an institution mortise lock and a classroom or storeroom function?
An institution lock like the L9082R is locked from both sides, key only, all the time. A storeroom function keeps the outside locked by key but lets you always exit freely from the inside. A classroom function locks and unlocks the outside lever with a key while the inside lever always works. If anyone needs to get out of the room without a key, institution is the wrong function, pick storeroom instead.
8) Does the Schlage L9082R come with a strike, and do I need to cut a new frame prep?
An ANSI strike is specified with the lock, 4-7/8 by 1-1/4 inch lip. If your frame is already prepped for an ANSI mortise strike, it drops in. Frames prepped for a cylindrical lock T-strike will need to be modified or replaced, since the mortise latch faceplate is 1-1/4 by 8 inches in the door edge and needs a matching mortise pocket.
