1) What does the Schlage L9082J institution function actually do on the door?
The L9082J is a key-only lock. The latchbolt retracts by key from either side, and the levers on both sides are always inoperative, so nobody passes without a key regardless of which way they approach. An auxiliary latch deadlocks the latchbolt when the door is closed. That is why it shows up on mechanical rooms, electrical closets, utility doors and controlled corridor openings where free egress is not required by code for that opening.
2) Does the L9082J come with a cylinder, or do I have to supply the core?
It ships less core, prepped for a large format interchangeable core cylinder. You order the LFIC core separately and key it into your existing system, which is how most facilities handle it so the core can be rekeyed without pulling the lock. Note the security grade follows the cylinder: with interchangeable core cylinders the L9000 is Grade 2 security, while with a concealed shell cylinder it carries A156.13 Grade 1 operational and security. A UL437 locking cylinder is available by specifying a Primus 20-500 Series cylinder.
3) Will a Schlage L9082 mortise lock fit my door prep and existing strike?
The lock body mortises into the edge of the door, with a 2-3/4 inch backset and a 1-1/4 x 8 inch latch faceplate. It is built for 1-3/4 inch doors only, not a range. The strike supplied is an ANSI strike, 4-7/8 inch by 1-1/4 inch lip, so if your frame is already cut for a standard ANSI 4-7/8 strike the replacement drops in. A door with a 2-3/8 inch bored-lock prep is not a mortise prep and would need the edge routed out.
4) Can I use this lock on a 1-3/8 inch door?
No. The L9082J is a single-thickness lock built for 1-3/4 inch doors, which is the standard commercial thickness. A 1-3/8 inch door, common on older interior openings, will not take this lock body and trim correctly. For a thinner door you need a bored or mortise lock rated for that thickness.
5) Is the Schlage L9082J approved for a fire-rated door?
Yes. The L9000 mortise locks are UL listed for 3-hour fire doors, and UL/cUL listed for A label single doors up to 4 by 10 feet and pairs up to 8 by 10 feet. The letter F and the UL symbol stamped on the latch front are what an inspector looks for to confirm the listing. Two functions in the family, L9076 and L9077, are excluded from the fire listing; the L9082 is not one of them.
6) Is the L9082 a good choice for a classroom door?
Not for the classroom itself. The institution function leaves both levers inoperative at all times, so a teacher could not exit without a key. It belongs on doors where entry and exit are both controlled: storage, mechanical, server and utility rooms. For classrooms, Schlage lists classroom functions within the same L9000 family, and classroom upgrade kits are published for the L Series as retrofit options.
7) Do I need to specify handing when ordering the L9082?
No handing call-out is needed. The L9082 is reversible, so one lock covers left and right hand openings and a property manager can stock a single part number across a building.
8) Which lever and rose options can I order on the Schlage L9082J?
Trim comes in three lever designs, 02, 06 and 07, each available with an A wrought rose or a B wrought rose, all in 626 satin chrome. That is six combinations total. The 07 lever measures 4-5/8 inches long with a 2-7/8 inch projection, and the rose is 2-1/8 inches in diameter, so it matches other L Series openings using A rose trim.
9) Does this lock meet ADA and is it OK for a California project?
The L Series trim meets ADA requirements, and levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch (64 mm) or less comply with the California Referenced Standards Code. Keep in mind the institution function is key-operated on both sides with inoperative levers, so it cannot be used where the opening requires free egress by hand.
10) Does the Schlage L9082 qualify for a federal or public agency job with domestic sourcing requirements?

Yes, Schlage publishes both for the L Series: a 180-degree mechanical indicator option, plus SL1/SK1 ligature-resistant trim and the HSLR high-risk ligature-resistant trim for behavioral health and detention-type openings. These are separate trim specifications, so they are called out at order time rather than added later.
