1) What backset does the Schlage D40 privacy lock use, and will it drop into an existing bore?
The D40 is specified with a 2-3/4 inch backset, which is the standard commercial backset. If the door you are retrofitting was bored at 2-3/8 inches, it will not line up, and the D Series does offer 2-3/8 inch and 3 inch backset latches, plus a 5 inch backset link for wide-stile applications. Measure from the door edge to the center of the bore before you order.
2) How does a Schlage D40S bed and bath privacy knob unlock in an emergency?
Push-button locking on the inside knob. 5) Can I key the Schlage D40S, or lock a closet door with it?
No key. The D40 privacy function is non-keyed, and it is meant for bedroom and bathroom doors where the occupant locks from inside. The Falcon X101 is a heavy duty Grade 1 cylindrical passage knobset, fire rated, for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch. 7) Do I have to specify handing when ordering a Schlage D40 knob set?
No. The D40 privacy knob is non-handed, so one part works on a left or right hand door with no field reversing step. That is what makes it easy to stock one box for a whole building.
8) What latch comes standard on the Schlage D40 knob lock, and can I use it on a fire rated door?
