FSS1-F Schlage Electronics Door Position Switches

The FSS1 Series of high-security Door Position Sensors (DPS) are designed to provide a true high-security solution with adjustable anti-tamper features to help prevent against attacks through magnetic, electronic or physical means. FSS1 learns its three-dimensional environment using one sensor to detect the distance of the magnetic faceplate in relation to the device, while the other six sensors are used to determine the polarity, size, strength and position of the magnets on the unique faceplate. Any interruption, change or tampering with the device cover will trigger a response at the door and/or through the network as a silent or audible alarm.

1) What door gap will the Schlage FSS1-F door position sensor tolerate before it reports the door open?
The FSS1 works with a vertical door gap of 1 to 7mm, and it allows up to 15mm of door movement before the alarm triggers. If your leaf sits looser than that against the frame, or the gap is wider than 7mm, this sensor will not hold a reliable closed state and you need a different DPS.
2) Can I switch a relay or siren directly off the FSS1 sensor contacts?
The alarm and tamper outputs are dry contacts rated 0.2A at 30V, wired as two normally closed with a common normally open. That is signalling capacity for a panel input or a small interposing relay coil, not enough to drive a siren or a lock directly. Put a relay between the sensor and any real load.
3) How is the FSS1-F mounted, and does it need conduit run to it?
The FSS1-F is the flush mount version, mortised into the door frame with conduit. That means frame prep and a conduit path back to the panel have to be planned before the frame is set or cut, so it suits new work and frames you can drill and route. If you cannot mortise the frame, a flush mortised sensor is the wrong choice for that opening.
4) Why choose a high security DPS like the FSS1 over a standard magnetic reed door contact?
A plain reed contact can be defeated by holding an external magnet near it. The FSS1 uses seven Hall effect sensors and a faceplate carrying up to eight magnets, so one sensor reads the distance to the faceplate while the other six read polarity, size, strength and position of that magnet array. That gives the opening a unique magnetic footprint, and any interruption, change or tampering with the cover triggers a silent or audible response at the door or over the network. For low risk interior doors a standard contact is fine; for secure rooms, cash handling, evidence or comms rooms, the tamper detection is the reason to spend here.
5) What voltage and current does the FSS1 high security DPS need from the access control panel?
It runs on 10 to 30VDC and draws under 45mA, typically about 50mA per the product data. That puts it within the range of a standard 12V or 24V access control auxiliary supply.
6) Does the FSS1 support end of line resistor or encryption modules for supervised circuits?
There is space inside the FSS1 housing for type 1 and type 2 end-of-line encryption modules, so the supervision module sits at the door rather than in a separate box. The module itself is a separate item, so specify it with the order if your panel requires supervised line encryption.
7) What security rating does the Schlage FSS1 door position sensor carry?
The FSS1 is rated to SL4, described as the highest security level in Australia, for tamper-proof performance. That is the rating stated for the series; no other grade or listing is claimed for it.
8) Does the FSS1 give me a separate tamper signal, or just door open and closed?
