FSS1-S Schlage Electronics Door Position Switches

The FSS1 Series of high-security Door Position Sensors (DPS) are designed to provide a true high-security solution with adjustable anti-tamper features to help prevent against attacks through magnetic, electronic or physical means. FSS1 learns its three-dimensional environment using one sensor to detect the distance of the magnetic faceplate in relation to the device, while the other six sensors are used to determine the polarity, size, strength and position of the magnets on the unique faceplate. Any interruption, change or tampering with the device cover will trigger a response at the door and/or through the network as a silent or audible alarm.

1) What door gap will the Schlage FSS1-S door position sensor tolerate before it alarms?
The FSS1-S works with a vertical door gap of 1 to 7mm, and allows up to 15mm of door movement before the alarm triggers. If your door sits loose in the frame with a gap wider than 7mm, or the leaf can shift more than 15mm without opening, this sensor is not the right choice for that opening.
2) Can I wire the FSS1 door contact into a monitored alarm loop with end-of-line resistors?
Yes. The FSS1 housing has space for type 1 and type 2 end-of-line encryption modules, so the loop can be supervised at the door rather than back at the panel. Alarm and tamper contacts are two normally closed with a common normally open, rated 0.2A at 30V, which suits dry-contact monitoring inputs on an access control or intruder panel.
3) How is the Schlage FSS1-S different from a standard reed-switch door contact?
A common reed contact simply senses a magnet nearby, which is why a strong external magnet held against the frame can defeat it. The FSS1 uses seven Hall effect sensors and a faceplate carrying up to eight magnets in a unique arrangement. One sensor measures distance to the faceplate while the other six read polarity, size, strength and position of those magnets, so a substitute magnet does not match the learned footprint. Tampering with the cover also triggers a silent or audible alarm at the door or across the network. For a normal office or storeroom door, a standard contact is enough. Use the FSS1 where the opening is genuinely high security.
4) Does the FSS1-S surface mount contact need a recess cut into the door and frame?
No. The S version is a surface mount unit with conduit entry, so it fixes to the face of the frame and door with the wiring run in conduit. No mortise pocket or drilling into the door edge is required, which makes it workable as a retrofit on existing hollow metal or timber openings where you do not want to cut the leaf.
5) What security rating does the Schlage FSS1 door position sensor carry?
The FSS1 is rated to SL4, described as the highest security level in Australia. That is the rating stated for the sensor itself and covers its anti-tamper design against magnetic, electronic and physical attack.
6) Will the FSS1 sensor false alarm if a door rattles in its frame?
The sensor learns its three dimensional environment and tolerates up to 15mm of door movement before it reports a change, so normal play or rattle in the leaf should not trip it. Beyond that movement, or with the gap outside the 1 to 7mm window it is set up for, it will signal.
