1) What is the Schlage L583-474 cam actually for?
The L583-474 is the replacement cam for Schlage modular mortise cylinders used with L Series mortise locks. The cam is the flat tail piece on the back of the cylinder that turns the lock's hub when the key rotates. It is not the cylinder itself and not the lock body, so if you need the key plug and housing you are ordering the cylinder, not this part.
2) Will a Schlage L cam work on my Schlage ND or B Series lock?
No. The L583-474 is the L cam, cut for Schlage L Series mortise locks. Cylindrical locksets and deadbolts use a tailpiece rather than a mortise cam, and other manufacturers' mortise locks use their own cam profiles. Match the cam to the lock family it is driving, or the key will turn without retracting the latch.
3) I am rekeying a building full of Schlage mortise locks. Do I need a new cam for each cylinder?
Rekeying alone does not need a new cam. The cam only gets replaced when it is worn, bent, or wrong for the lock you are moving the cylinder into. If you are pulling cylinders from one L Series lock and putting them into another L Series lock, the L cam already on them carries over. Keep a few L583-474 cams on the truck for the ones that come out damaged.
