Schlage ND SERIES OVERVIEW

The Schlage ND Series offers a full breadth of commercial lock options with a suited combination of mechanical, electrified and electronic options. This overview covers common characteristics for the mechanical and electrified lock information.

Beyond grade 1 performance is the hallmark of the mechanical and electrified locks. ND Series locks are tested to withstand 3,100 in-lb. of abusive lever torque - more than 2 1/2 times the Grade 1 standard requirement. Offset lever pull testing up to 1,600 lbs. assures you of the lock's superb resistance against pry bar attacks. More than strong, ND Series is built to last and shows nearly zero droop or wobble after 16 million cycles.

All ND Series locks including electronic and ligature-resistant trim use the common cylindrical ANSI 161 door preparation making them easily interchangeable. They are ideal for all new construction and retrofit applications.

ND Series Mechanical Lock

The ND mechanical lock, along with being Schlage’s best selling mechanical lock, is the foundation for both the wired electrified and NDE wireless electronic lock. Not only did Schlage invent the cylindrical lock, but we continue to make it better with capabilities such as:

  • Unparalleled strength - the lock prevents access even when subjected to torque loads up to 3,100 in-lbs (2.6x BHMA1), withstands pry bar attacks of 1,600 lbs (8x BHMA requirements1), and withstands 100 hammer blows (20x BHMA requirements1, 2)
  • Exceptional durability - cycle tested to over 16M cycles (16x BHMA requirements1) with near zero droop or wobble - without the use of set screws or O-rings
  • Improved feel - improved strength and durability are more than numbers, you can actually feel it in the lock
  • Improved installation - installation is even easier than before (and withoutany set screws or O-rings)

Schlage ND12DEL-BRW-626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does the Schlage ND12EL exit lock do when the power goes out?
Power loss unlocks the outside lever. The ND12EL is a fail-safe electrified function: the outside lever is held locked electrically and releases when the switch is thrown or power drops, so the opening becomes free entry on a power failure. The inside lever is always unlocked for immediate egress, powered or not. If you need the opposite behavior (outside stays locked when power fails), a fail-safe device is the wrong choice for that opening.
2) Does the Schlage ND12EL take a key from the outside?
No key. The ND12EL is a non-keyed exit function, so there is no cylinder on the outside lever at all. Access from the outside depends entirely on the access control system releasing the lock, or on power dropping. If you want a keyed override on the outside for when the system is down, you want a keyed electrified function such as the ND80 storeroom lock instead.
3) Will a Schlage ND12EL drop into the door prep I already have from another ND Series lock?
Yes. Every ND Series lock, including the electrified and electronic trims, uses the common cylindrical ANSI 161 door preparation, so they are interchangeable in the same door. Schlage states the series suits both new construction and retrofit. You will still need to get wire into the door for the electrified chassis, which a purely mechanical ND swap did not require.
4) What voltage does the electrified Schlage ND12EL run on and how much current does it draw?
The ND12EL auto-detects 12 or 24V DC operation, so one part number covers either supply. Schlage rates the four electrified ND functions at a maximum draw of 0.4 amps with 0.1 amps holding current, which is what keeps the levers from heating up on a continuously energized fail-safe opening. Size your power supply off the 0.4 amp inrush figure, not the holding current.
5) Will the ND12EL latch into the strike that is already in my frame?
The ND12EL ships standard with the 13-247 deadlatch on a 2-3/4 inch backset, square corner face, 1-1/8 x 2-1/4 inches, and the 10-025 ANSI strike, 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inches with a 1-3/16 inch lip. If your frame already has a standard ANSI 4-7/8 inch strike cutout, the latch lines up. A frame prepped for a T-strike or a round corner latch face will not accept the standard face without a change of latch.
6) Is the Schlage ND12EL approved for a fire rated door?
ND Series locks are UL/cUL listed for 3-hour A label single fire doors up to 4 ft x 10 ft and 8 ft x 8 ft pair doors, and for 90-minute 8 ft x 10 ft pair doors with the 3/4 inch latch option. Note the pair-door and 90-minute listings depend on that 3/4 inch latch, which is not the standard 13-247 deadlatch, so specify it if your opening needs it.
7) Does the Schlage ND12EL meet ADA and accessibility requirements for a school or healthcare corridor?
Yes on both counts. ND Series meets ADA requirements and complies with ICC A117.1 Accessible and Usable Buildings and Facilities. For California, levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch or less comply, which covers the Rhodes, Sparta, Tubular, Omega, Longitude and Boardwalk designs. The series also meets Buy American Act requirements and the federal FF-H-106C Series 161 spec, which matters on government work.
8) What else could I use instead of a Schlage ND12EL for an electrified fail-safe lever opening?
The Corbin Russwin CL33903 is the closest cross-brand equivalent we carry: a Grade 1 fail-safe electrified cylindrical lever lock in 12V AC/DC, rated for 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors. It comes in both a keyed version and an NZ lever, D rose configuration. The main practical differences are that the Corbin runs on 12V AC/DC where the ND12EL auto-detects 12 or 24V DC, and the ND12EL as configured is non-keyed. If your access control supply is 24V, the Schlage saves you a power conversion.
9) What is the closest equivalent to a Schlage ND12EL fail safe electrified cylindrical lever lock from another manufacturer?
The Corbin Russwin CL33903 is the nearest cross-brand match. It is a Grade 1 fail safe electrified cylindrical lever lock rated for 12VAC/DC and doors 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch thick. The ND12EL is likewise a Grade 1 cylindrical lever lock with a fail-safe electrified configuration, non-handed and non-keyed, with the outside lever continuously locked electrically and released by switch or on power loss. The practical difference for a specifier: the ND12EL is offered non-keyed on the outside, so credential control lives entirely with the access control system, while the CL33903 is also offered in a keyed build under CL33903-KEYED-12AD if the opening needs a mechanical override cylinder as well.
10) The opening does not need to be electrified, just free entry both ways - what Grade 1 lever lock should be used instead of an ND12EL?
Drop the electrification and specify a Grade 1 passage lever. The Falcon K101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty passage cylindrical lock with non-handed levers, fire rated, and fits doors 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch thick. The Falcon T101 is also a Grade 1 heavy duty passage cylindrical lever lock. The Corbin Russwin CL3110 is a Grade 1 vandal resistant passage/closet cylindrical lever lock, fire rated, for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors. All three leave both levers always free; the ND12EL exists specifically to hold the outside lever locked electrically while the inside lever stays free for egress, so if no one ever needs to control the outside lever from a system, a passage lock is the correct part and there is no power supply, wire transfer hinge or door position hardware to buy with it.
11) What should be specified instead of an ND12EL if the outside lever needs to stay locked when power is lost?
An ND12EL is the wrong choice for that opening - it is fail-safe, meaning the outside lever unlocks on power failure. If the requirement is a lever that stays locked without power, a mechanical Grade 1 storeroom-style lock is the reliable answer, or an electrified fail-secure lock. Among cross-brand mechanical options, the Cal-Royal AG05 is a Grade 2 storeroom lever lockset with a deadlocking latchbolt for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Hager 2580 is a Grade 2 storeroom cylindrical lock with a Withnell lever for 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors. Both keep the outside lever locked with no power involved and require a key to enter, while the inside lever stays free.
12) For a school corridor that needs classroom control rather than remote release, what lever lock replaces an ND12EL?
An ND12EL gives no key control at the door - it is non-keyed and its outside lever is released electrically. For classroom control, a keyed Grade 1 classroom lever is the correct specification. The Dexter C1000 Series classroom lock is a Grade 1 keyed clutching cylindrical lever lock for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, and the C1000 classroom security version is a Grade 1 keyed clutching lever that adds inside key control of the outside lever, on the same door thickness range. Classroom security is the version to specify when a teacher must lock the corridor lever from inside the room without opening the door.
13) Do I have to specify handing when I order a Schlage ND12EL?
No handing to call out. The ND12EL is non-handed, so the same lock works on a left or right hand door and you do not need to know the swing before ordering. What you do specify is lever design (nine choices, from Rhodes and Sparta to Athens, Boardwalk, Broadway, Latitude, Longitude, Omega and Tubular) and finish.
14) Can I get a Schlage ND12EL that signals when someone exits from the inside?
Request to Exit is a separate option on the ND12 exit function, so if you need the lock to report inside lever use back to the access control panel, order the RX version rather than the plain ND12EL. Without RX the lock simply releases mechanically on the inside lever with no signal to the panel.
15) How tough is the Schlage ND Series lock compared to a standard Grade 1 lockset?
Grade 1 certified under ANSI/BHMA A156.2 Series 4000, and tested well past it. The ND holds against 3,100 in-lb of abusive lever torque (2.6x the BHMA requirement), 1,600 lbs of offset lever pull against pry bar attack (8x), and 100 vertical lever impacts. Cycle life is 16 million with near zero lever droop and no set screws or O-rings holding it together. The wired electrified versions also comply with A156.25 for indoor use.
16) Can I match a Schlage ND12EL to the exit devices and other hardware on the rest of the building?
The ND Series is built to suite with Von Duprin exit devices and other Schlage products, and it pairs with Schlage ALX Series Grade 2 locks where you want the same lever look on lighter-duty interior openings at a lower spec. That is how a property manager keeps one lever design and one finish running across a whole facility while varying the function and grade door by door.
17) I just need a lever that always turns freely on both sides. Is an electrified exit lock overkill?
Yes, if nothing has to lock. The ND12EL is an electrified fail-safe lock and needs power run to the door and a control system behind it. For an opening that is always free, a passage lockset is the right part and there is no wiring: the Falcon K101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty passage lever rated 1-3/8 to 2-1/4 inch doors and fire rated, and the Corbin Russwin CL3110 is a Grade 1 vandal resistant passage lever for 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors, also fire rated. Schlage's own non-keyed passage function in this family is the ND10, ANSI F75.
18) Is the Schlage ND12EL rated for outdoor or exterior openings?
Indoor. The wired electrified ND locks comply with ANSI/BHMA A156.25 for indoor use; it is the wireless electronic NDE version that carries the indoor/outdoor A156.25 compliance. For an exterior door on an access control system, that distinction is the one to check before you specify.
19) Is the Schlage ND12EL rated for hurricane zone construction in Florida?
Yes. ND Series complies with the Florida Building Code under ASTM E330, E1886 and E1996, and with Miami Dade TAS 201, 202 and 203 hurricane requirements. That covers the hardware itself; the door and frame assembly still has to carry its own approval.
20) Is a Grade 2 passage lever such as the Falcon B101 or Hager 2510 an acceptable substitute for a Schlage ND12EL?
No - they are different functions as well as a different grade. The Falcon B101 is a Grade 2 medium duty passage cylindrical lever lock and the Hager 2510 is a Grade 2 passage cylindrical lever lock for 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors; both leave the outside lever free at all times. The ND12EL is heavy duty Grade 1 and electrified, holding the outside lever locked until a switch releases it or power drops. A passage lock cannot be wired to control access, so it only substitutes on an opening where the access control requirement has been removed entirely.
21) Is a keypad lever lock like the Lockey 1150 or Delaney LP250 a substitute for an electrified exit lock?
They solve a different problem. The Lockey 1150 is a heavy duty mechanical keypad lever set with double combination for doors 1-1/8 inch to 2 inch thick, and the Delaney LP250 is a Grade 2 electronic keypad leverlock; both grant entry from a code entered at the door and run standalone. The ND12EL carries no credential of its own - it is non-keyed, and the outside lever is released by a switch or on power failure, which means the release decision comes from an access control system, an intercom or a card reader elsewhere. Choose a keypad lever when each door manages its own users, and the ND12EL when the door has to answer to a central system.
22) Between the Schlage ND12EL and the Corbin Russwin CL33903, which one suits a retrofit into an existing cylindrical prep?
Both are cylindrical lever locks, so both target a bored door prep rather than a mortise pocket. The Schlage ND12EL is non-handed, which means one part covers left and right hand openings across a building. The Corbin Russwin CL33903 is a Grade 1 fail safe electrified lever for doors 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch thick. For a retrofit the deciding facts are the existing door thickness and whether the openings vary in hand: a mixed-hand corridor is simpler to stock with a non-handed lock, while a job already standardized on Corbin Russwin trim keys the choice the other way.
23) Which Grade 1 lever locks are worth comparing against the ND12EL for a heavy traffic commercial opening?
Staying at Grade 1 and heavy duty narrows the field considerably. The Schlage ND12EL is a Grade 1 heavy duty cylindrical lever lock built in zinc and steel. Cross-brand Grade 1 cylindrical lever peers include the Falcon K101, a heavy duty non-handed passage lock that is fire rated and covers 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch doors; the Falcon T101, a Grade 1 heavy duty passage lever with pressure release technology; the Corbin Russwin CL3110, a Grade 1 vandal resistant passage/closet lever, fire rated, for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors; and the Design Hardware X75, a Grade 1 passage lever lockset with a flat lever for 1-3/4 inch doors. The separator is function - the ND12EL is the only one of the group that holds the outside lever locked electrically, so it belongs on an opening under access control while the others suit openings that only need durable free passage.
24) What finishes does the Schlage ND12EL come in, and is there one that holds up in a healthcare setting?
Ten finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 626AM satin chrome antimicrobial, and 643E aged bronze. The 626AM antimicrobial variant is the one to specify for patient rooms and other high-touch clinical openings. All ten are available across the nine lever designs.
25) What is the Schlage ND12EL chassis actually made of?
Zinc and steel, built as a heavy duty commercial cylindrical chassis rather than a tubular residential unit. Schlage notes the lever holds position through 16 million cycles without set screws or O-rings, which is what usually goes first on lighter levers in high traffic.
26) Can a dummy lever trim be used on the pull side of an opening that has an ND12EL on it?
A dummy is a different animal and cannot latch a door. The BEST 9K Series 1DT is a Grade 1 heavy duty non-keyed single dummy trim cylindrical lever lock and the Accentra 455LN Augusta is a Grade 1 heavy duty single dummy cylindrical lever lock - both are fixed trim with no latch and no chassis function. The ND12EL is a working cylindrical lock with a deadlatching auxiliary latch that deadlocks the latchbolt when the door is closed. Use a dummy only on an inactive leaf or a door held by other means; it will not secure or latch an opening on its own.
27) Will a residential grade lever such as a Kwikset Breton or a Baldwin Estate 5103 work in place of a Schlage ND12EL?
They belong on different doors. The Kwikset 200BRNL Breton is a Grade 3 passage lever set for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors and the Baldwin Estate 5103 is offered as a passage or privacy lever with a 5048 rose. The ND12EL is a commercial Grade 1 heavy duty electrified lever lock. On a multi-family or hospitality project the residential levers can be right for unit interior doors, but a corridor or stair door under access control needs the commercial electrified lock, and a Grade 3 passage lever has neither the electrification nor the chassis rating for it.
