Schlage ND SERIES OVERVIEW

The Schlage ND Series offers a full breadth of commercial lock options with a suited combination of mechanical, electrified and electronic options. This overview covers common characteristics for the mechanical and electrified lock information.

Beyond grade 1 performance is the hallmark of the mechanical and electrified locks. ND Series locks are tested to withstand 3,100 in-lb. of abusive lever torque - more than 2 1/2 times the Grade 1 standard requirement. Offset lever pull testing up to 1,600 lbs. assures you of the lock's superb resistance against pry bar attacks. More than strong, ND Series is built to last and shows nearly zero droop or wobble after 16 million cycles.

All ND Series locks including electronic and ligature-resistant trim use the common cylindrical ANSI 161 door preparation making them easily interchangeable. They are ideal for all new construction and retrofit applications.

ND Series Mechanical Lock

The ND mechanical lock, along with being Schlage’s best selling mechanical lock, is the foundation for both the wired electrified and NDE wireless electronic lock. Not only did Schlage invent the cylindrical lock, but we continue to make it better with capabilities such as:

  • Unparalleled strength - the lock prevents access even when subjected to torque loads up to 3,100 in-lbs (2.6x BHMA1), withstands pry bar attacks of 1,600 lbs (8x BHMA requirements1), and withstands 100 hammer blows (20x BHMA requirements1, 2)
  • Exceptional durability - cycle tested to over 16M cycles (16x BHMA requirements1) with near zero droop or wobble - without the use of set screws or O-rings
  • Improved feel - improved strength and durability are more than numbers, you can actually feel it in the lock
  • Improved installation - installation is even easier than before (and withoutany set screws or O-rings)

Schlage ND12D RHO 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does the Schlage ND12 exit lock actually do, and when would I use it instead of a passage or storeroom lock?
The ND12 is an exit function lock (ANSI F89): the outside lever is always fixed and the inside lever is always unlocked, so anyone inside can walk out but nobody can enter from the corridor side. It is non-keyed, so there is no cylinder and no way to release the outside lever. Use it on stair discharge doors, one-way corridor doors, and rear service exits where you want free egress and zero entry. If you need people to pass both directions freely, that is a passage function; if you need entry by key from outside, that is a storeroom lock like the ND80.
2) Will a Schlage ND12 drop into the door prep I already have from an old cylindrical lock?
The ND12 uses the common cylindrical ANSI 161 door preparation shared across the whole ND Series, including the electronic and ligature-resistant trims, so ND models swap between each other without redrilling. That is the standard commercial cylindrical bore, which is why the series is used for retrofit as well as new construction. The lock ships with the 13-247 deadlatch on a 2-3/4 inch backset, so your existing prep needs to be on 2-3/4 rather than the 2-3/8 residential backset.
3) Will the ND12 latch into the strike that is already in my frame?
The ND12 comes with the 10-025 ANSI strike, 1-1/4 by 4-7/8 inches with a 1-3/16 inch lip, no box. If your frame already has a standard ANSI 4-7/8 inch strike prep, the lock lands in it. If you have an older T-strike or a 2-3/4 inch square-corner strike, the frame prep will not match the 4-7/8 face and you will need to change the strike or the frame plate. The latch itself is a square corner deadlatch with a 1-1/8 by 2-1/4 inch face.
4) Can a Schlage ND12 go on a fire rated door?
Yes. ND Series locks are UL and cUL listed for 3 hour A label single fire doors up to 4 feet by 10 feet, and for pairs of doors at 8 by 8 feet with the 3/4 inch latch option. Pairs at 8 by 10 feet carry a 90 minute rating, also with the 3/4 inch latch. On a fire rated pair, order the 3/4 inch latch rather than the standard 13-247 deadlatch that ships with the lock.
5) Does the Schlage ND12 meet ADA and accessibility code for a public building?
The ND12 meets ADA requirements and complies with ICC A117.1 for accessible and usable buildings, and the lever handle itself satisfies the operable-without-tight-grasping intent. For California, levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch or less comply, which covers the Rhodes, Sparta, Tubular, Omega, Longitude and Boardwalk lever designs. It also meets the Buy American Act, which matters on federally funded work, and FF-H-106C Series 161.
6) What is the closest Grade 1 non-keyed cylindrical lever lock to the Schlage ND12 exit lock?
The ND12 is a Grade 1 cylindrical lever lock with a fixed outside lever and an always-unlocked inside lever for immediate egress, carrying ANSI/BHMA function F89. Among Grade 1 non-keyed cylindrical lever locks, the Falcon K101 and the Falcon T101 are both heavy duty Grade 1 cylindrical passage locks, and the Corbin Russwin CL3110 is a Grade 1 vandal resistant cylindrical lever lock in passage/closet function. The difference that decides the opening is function, not grade: those three are passage locks, so both levers always retract the latch. The ND12 fixes the outside lever permanently, so the door cannot be opened from the corridor side at all, only exited from within.
7) If the door does not need a fixed outside lever, what non-keyed lever lock should I use instead of the ND12?
Use a passage function lock when both sides should always retract the latch. The Falcon K101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty passage cylindrical lock with non-handed levers and a fire rating, fitting doors 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch thick. The Design Hardware X75 is a Grade 1 passage lever lockset for 1-3/4 inch doors. On lighter interior traffic, the Falcon B101 is a Grade 2 medium duty passage lever and the Hager 2510 is a Grade 2 passage lever for 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors. The ND12 is the choice only where the outside lever must stay fixed while inside egress stays free.
8) Is a dummy lever the same thing as an exit lock with a fixed outside lever?
No, and this is the substitution that gets returned. The Schlage ND12 has a fixed outside lever but a working latch: the inside lever retracts it for immediate egress. A dummy trim has no latch and no chassis at all. The BEST 9K Series 1DT is a Grade 1 heavy duty single dummy trim cylindrical lever, the BEST 7KC Series 1DT is the Grade 2 medium duty single dummy, and the Accentra 455LN Augusta is a Grade 1 single dummy cylindrical lever. Those are pull trim for an inactive leaf. If the door has to latch and be exited through, the ND12 is the working lock and a dummy is not a stand-in for it.
9) The opening needs key control from the outside, so what do I order instead of an ND12?
The ND12 is non-keyed, so there is no cylinder and no way to open it from the outside. When the outside has to be openable by key, move to a keyed function. The Dexter C1000 Series is offered as a Grade 1 keyed entry/office lever and as a Grade 1 keyed classroom lever, both clutching, for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch thick. The Cal-Royal AG05 is a Grade 2 storeroom lever with a deadlocking latchbolt, and the Hager 2580 is a Grade 2 storeroom cylindrical lever. Storeroom keeps the outside lever locked and key-operated; entry/office adds an unlocked state.
10) For a fire rated opening, which non-keyed lever locks besides the ND12 carry a fire rating?
The Schlage ND12 is UL/cUL listed for 3-hour A label single fire doors up to 4 feet by 10 feet, with pair door listings at 3 hour and 90 minute using the 3/4 inch latch option. Among other non-keyed cylindrical levers, the Falcon K101 is a Grade 1 fire rated passage lock for 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch doors, and the Corbin Russwin CL3110 is a Grade 1 fire rated passage lever for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors. Both are passage function, so on a fire door that also has to stay unenterable from the corridor, the ND12's fixed outside lever is the functional difference.
11) Do I need to specify handing when I order a Schlage ND12 exit lock?
No handing to specify. The ND12 is non-handed, so one lock covers left and right hand openings and you can stock a single part for a building with doors swinging both ways. That also means a mis-ordered hand is not a failure mode here, unlike some escutcheon lever sets.
12) What do I have to specify to order a Schlage ND12, and what lever designs are available?
Two choices settle the order: lever design and finish. Levers are Athens, Boardwalk, Broadway, Latitude, Longitude, Omega, Rhodes, Sparta and Tubular. Finishes are 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 626AM satin chrome antimicrobial and 643E aged bronze. There is no keying decision because the ND12 is non-keyed. If the opening also needs Request to Exit signalling back to an access control panel, the function is available in an RX version.
13) Is a Grade 1 lever lock worth it over a Grade 2 on a high traffic exit door?
On a door that gets kicked, leaned on and hit with carts, yes. The ND12 is certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.2 Series 4000 Grade 1 and goes past it: 3,100 in-lb of abusive lever torque, 1,600 lbs offset lever pull against pry bar attack, and 16 million cycles with near zero lever droop and no set screws or O-rings holding it together. Grade 2 alternatives in the same cylindrical format exist, for example the Falcon B101 passage lock, and they are fine on interior doors that see light use. For a stairwell or a rear exit on a commercial building, the Grade 1 chassis is the one that survives.
14) I need free egress on a Grade 1 cylindrical lock but the ND12 exit function is wrong for my door. What else works?
The ND12 blocks all entry from outside, which is often more than an interior opening needs. If you just want the door to open from both sides, a Grade 1 passage lock is the right part: the Falcon K101 covers 1-3/8 to 2-1/4 inch doors and is fire rated, the Falcon T101 is a heavy duty Grade 1 passage lever, and the Corbin Russwin CL3110 is a vandal resistant Grade 1 passage lock for 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors. Within Schlage itself the equivalent is the ND10, ANSI F75 passage. Stay with the ND12 only where the outside lever must stay rigid.
15) Will the Schlage ND12 match the other Schlage and Von Duprin hardware already in my building?
It suites with Von Duprin exit devices and other Schlage products, and it is aesthetically matched to the Schlage ALX Series Grade 2 locks, so you can run Grade 1 on the abused openings and ALX on the light interior doors and still have the levers and roses look alike. Across the ND Series you have nine lever designs and four rose designs to pick a match from, in ten finishes.
16) What is the lighter duty alternative to the Schlage ND12 for a low traffic interior door?
The ND12 is a Grade 1 heavy duty commercial cylindrical lever. For interior doors that see less traffic, the Grade 2 cylindrical levers run lighter: the Accentra 5301LN Augusta and the Accentra 4601LN are Grade 2 passage cylindrical levers, the Arrow GL01 is a Grade 2 passage cylindrical lock with a Sierra lever for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors, and the Design Hardware J75 is a Grade 2 passage lever for 1-3/4 inch doors. All of those are passage function, so neither lever is fixed. Where the corridor side must stay fixed, grade is not the trade you can make.
17) Can I use a privacy lever in place of an exit lock on a restroom or single-occupancy door?
They behave differently on the corridor side. The Schlage ND12 fixes the outside lever permanently, with no way to secure or release it from either side; the inside lever always allows egress. A privacy lock adds an inside locking control instead: the Hager 2540 and the Arrow MK02-TA are privacy function locks, the Arrow MK02-TA being fire rated for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors, and the Baldwin Estate 5103 is offered in a privacy lever with the 5048 rose. If the occupant needs to lock the door behind them, that is privacy. If the door is meant to be entered only from a controlled side and exited freely, that is the ND12.
18) Which lever lock stands up to abuse in a corridor better than a Grade 2 knob lock?
The Schlage ND12 is a Grade 1 heavy duty cylindrical lever built in zinc and steel, tested to 3,100 in-lb of abusive lever torque and 1,600 lbs of offset lever pull, with a non-handed chassis. In the same abuse-prone class, the Corbin Russwin CL3110 is a Grade 1 vandal resistant cylindrical lever, and the Falcon T101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty lever with pressure release technology. Where the corridor lever gets hung on, those constructions differ from Grade 2 knob locks such as the Arrow MK33-BD-CS asylum knob lock. Note the function split again: the CL3110 and T101 are passage, so neither fixes the outside lever.
19) I need electric control on an exit-function opening. Is there an electrified equivalent to the ND12?
The ND12 as a mechanical lock is non-electronic; the ND Series does offer the F89 exit function in an electrified version and a Request to Exit option. For an electrified cylindrical lever from another line, the Corbin Russwin CL33903 is a Grade 1 fail safe electrified cylindrical lever operating on 12VAC/DC for doors 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch thick, offered with an NZ lever and D rose. Fail safe unlocks on power loss, which is a different behavior from the ND12's permanently fixed outside lever, so confirm which state the life safety plan calls for before substituting.
20) Will a keypad lever lock do the same job as an exit lock?
No. A keypad lever controls who gets in by code; an exit lock controls it by fixing the outside lever entirely. The Schlage ND12 has no outside operation at all and no keyed cylinder. The Lockey 1150 is a heavy duty mechanical keypad lever set with double combination in passage function for doors 1-1/8 inch to 2 inch thick, and the Delaney LP250 is a Grade 2 electronic keypad leverlock. Choose a keypad when specific people need coded entry from the outside; choose the ND12 when nobody enters from that side and egress must never be impeded.
21) Can a residential grade passage lever be used on a commercial corridor door instead of an ND12?
The ND12 is specified as commercial, Grade 1, heavy duty. The lighter residential-oriented levers sit several grades below it: the Kwikset 200BRNL Breton passage lever is Grade 3 for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, the Callan Asheville is a Grade 3 passage leverset, and the Cal-Royal AUS00 is a Grade 3 entrance/office lever for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors. Those are also passage or entrance functions, not exit function, so besides the grade difference they leave the outside lever operable.
22) We already run Schlage C keyway across the building. Do the alternatives to the ND12 work with that keying?
The ND12 itself is non-keyed, so keying does not enter into it on that opening. Where a keyed lock is going on adjacent doors, the Cal-Royal AG00 entrance lever and AG03 classroom lever are both 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different, the AG00 with a 2-3/8 inch backset and the AG03 with a 2-3/4 inch backset, and the Arrow MK33-BD-CS is a conventional cylinder in Schlage C keyway. The ND12 uses a 2-3/4 inch backset deadlatch, so an AG03 keeps the same backset prep across the opening.
23) What matches an ND12 on the inactive leaf of a pair?
Pair the working ND12 on the active leaf with dummy trim on the inactive leaf so the levers look alike. The BEST 9K Series 1DT is a Grade 1 heavy duty single dummy trim cylindrical lever, and the BEST 7KC Series 1DT is the Grade 2 medium duty single dummy. Baldwin's Estate 5103 half dummy comes in left hand and right hand versions with the 5048 rose, and Emtek offers Arts and Crafts and Cortina dummy levers in pairs. The ND12 comes in ten finishes including 626 Satin Chrome and 613 Oil Rubbed Bronze, so match the dummy finish to the active leaf.
24) What is the Schlage ND12 made of, and will it hold up in a hospital or school corridor?
Zinc and steel construction, rated heavy duty and built for commercial rather than residential service. The performance numbers behind that are 100 hammer blows without gaining access, 1,600 lbs of offset lever pull, and 16 million cycles of use. For infection-control environments the 626AM satin chrome antimicrobial finish is one of the ten finish options, which is a common pick in healthcare and education.
25) Does the Schlage ND12 need power or wiring?
No. The ND12 as a non-keyed exit lock is a purely mechanical cylindrical lock, no power, no wiring, no battery. Schlage does offer the F89 exit function in an electrified version, and the wired electrified ND locks auto-detect 12/24V DC with a 0.4 amp maximum draw and 0.1 amp holding current, but that is a different part number than the mechanical lock.
26) Is the Schlage ND12 approved for hurricane zone work in Florida?
Yes. ND Series locks comply with the Florida Building Code under ASTM E330, E1886 and E1996, and with Miami Dade TAS 201, 202 and 203 hurricane requirements. That covers the coastal and high velocity hurricane zone jurisdictions where hardware has to be listed alongside the door and frame assembly.
