Schlage ND SERIES OVERVIEW

The Schlage ND Series offers a full breadth of commercial lock options with a suited combination of mechanical, electrified and electronic options. This overview covers common characteristics for the mechanical and electrified lock information.

Beyond grade 1 performance is the hallmark of the mechanical and electrified locks. ND Series locks are tested to withstand 3,100 in-lb. of abusive lever torque - more than 2 1/2 times the Grade 1 standard requirement. Offset lever pull testing up to 1,600 lbs. assures you of the lock's superb resistance against pry bar attacks. More than strong, ND Series is built to last and shows nearly zero droop or wobble after 16 million cycles.

All ND Series locks including electronic and ligature-resistant trim use the common cylindrical ANSI 161 door preparation making them easily interchangeable. They are ideal for all new construction and retrofit applications.

ND Series Mechanical Lock

The ND mechanical lock, along with being Schlage’s best selling mechanical lock, is the foundation for both the wired electrified and NDE wireless electronic lock. Not only did Schlage invent the cylindrical lock, but we continue to make it better with capabilities such as:

  • Unparalleled strength - the lock prevents access even when subjected to torque loads up to 3,100 in-lbs (2.6x BHMA1), withstands pry bar attacks of 1,600 lbs (8x BHMA requirements1), and withstands 100 hammer blows (20x BHMA requirements1, 2)
  • Exceptional durability - cycle tested to over 16M cycles (16x BHMA requirements1) with near zero droop or wobble - without the use of set screws or O-rings
  • Improved feel - improved strength and durability are more than numbers, you can actually feel it in the lock
  • Improved installation - installation is even easier than before (and withoutany set screws or O-rings)

FEATURES & BENEFITS

Schlage ND25D RHO 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does the Schlage ND25 exit lock actually do, and is there a key on the outside?
The ND25 is exit-only. Outside gets a blank plate with no lever and no cylinder, so there's no way to enter from that side. The inside lever is always unlocked, so anyone can walk out at any time without a key or a thumbturn. Use it where you want one-way traffic out: stair discharge into a corridor, a rear service door, a mechanical room you enter from another opening. If someone needs to get back in through that door, this is the wrong function.
2) Will the Schlage ND25 latch into the strike already in my frame?
It ships with a 13-247 deadlatch on a 2-3/4 inch backset, square corner face 1-1/8 x 2-1/4 inches, and a 10-025 ANSI strike, 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inches with a 1-3/16 inch lip. If your frame already has an ANSI 4-7/8 inch strike cutout, which is the standard commercial frame prep, the supplied strike drops straight in. A frame prepped for a small T-strike or a residential 2-1/4 inch face plate will need the cutout enlarged or the frame swapped.
3) Do I have to specify handing when I order a Schlage ND25?
No handing to specify. The ND25 is non-handed, so one part number covers left and right hand doors and you can stock a single lock for a whole building. The latch face is square corner, so the door edge prep has to match a square face rather than a radius corner.
4) Can I retrofit a Schlage ND25 into a door that already has an ND or other cylindrical lock?
Yes, if the door carries the standard cylindrical ANSI 161 prep with a 2-3/4 inch backset. Every ND Series lock, including the electronic and ligature-resistant trims, uses that same 161 prep, so swapping an ND50 or ND80 for an ND25 is a straight change of chassis and trim with no new boring. Coming off a 2-3/8 inch backset lock, the crossbore lines up but the latch bore in the door edge does not, so plan on drilling the edge deeper.
5) Is the Schlage ND25 approved for a fire rated door?
Yes. ND Series locks are UL and cUL listed for 3 hour A label single fire doors up to 4 ft x 10 ft, and pair doors to 8 ft x 8 ft at 3 hours or 8 ft x 10 ft at 90 minutes with the 3/4 inch latch option. Note that pair-door listing depends on the 3/4 inch latch, so that has to be called out on the order. The lock is also certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.2 Series 4000 Grade 1 and meets ADA and ICC A117.1.
6) Should I use an exit lock like the ND25 or just a passage set on a door people only leave through?
They behave differently on the outside. A passage set gives you a working lever on both sides, so anyone can pull the door open from the corridor. The ND25 puts a blank plate outside, so the door can only be opened from within. If the point is to stop people from entering from the far side while keeping free egress, the exit lock is the one. If you just want a latching door with no security at all, a passage lock such as the Schlage ND10 (ANSI F75) is simpler and gives you a lever on both faces.
7) Can I add a key cylinder to the Schlage ND25 later if we decide we want entry from outside?
No. The ND25 has a blank plate outside with nowhere for a cylinder to go, and it is a non-keyed function throughout. If you might want keyed access from that side, order a keyed ND function instead: ND80 (ANSI F86) storeroom keeps the outside lever locked at all times with the key retracting the latch, ND50 (F82) is entrance/office, and ND70 (F84) is classroom. All of them use the same ANSI 161 prep, so the door boring is identical either way and the change is a chassis swap, not a new door.
8) What is the closest Grade 1 non-keyed cylindrical lever equivalent to the Schlage ND25 exit lock?
The ND25 is a Grade 1 cylindrical lever with a blank plate outside and an inside lever that is always unlocked for immediate egress. The closest heavy duty Grade 1 non-keyed cylindrical lever alternatives are the Falcon K101, a Grade 1 heavy duty passage cylindrical lock with non-handed levers, and the Falcon T101, a Grade 1 heavy duty cylindrical passage lever lock. Both differ from the ND25 in function: they are passage locks with an operating lever on both faces, where the ND25 presents a fixed blank plate on the outside face so there is no outside operation at all.
9) Is a dummy lever the same thing as a Schlage ND25 exit lock?
No. The ND25 is a cylindrical lock with an operating inside lever that retracts a latch for immediate egress, using the 13-247 deadlatch with a 2-3/4 inch backset. A dummy trim such as the BEST 9K Series 1DT Grade 1 single dummy, the Accentra 455LN Augusta Grade 1 single dummy, or the Emtek Arts and Crafts dummy pair is fixed trim with no latch and no chassis at all - it is pulled, not operated. Dummy trim cannot serve an opening that has to latch or has to release for egress.
10) What should I specify instead of the ND25 if the door needs to be locked and keyed from the outside?
The ND25 is non-keyed with a blank outside plate, so it accepts no cylinder. For a keyed outside on a Grade 1 cylindrical lever, the Dexter C1000 Series covers entry/office, classroom, classroom security and asylum functions in Grade 1; the entry/office, classroom and classroom security versions list 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors and the asylum version 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch. In Grade 2, the Cal-Royal AG05 is a storeroom lever with a deadlocking latchbolt and the Hager 2580 is a storeroom lever with a Withnell lever for 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors.
11) Which non-keyed lever alternative to the Schlage ND25 is confirmed fire rated?
The ND25 is UL/cUL listed for 3-hour A label single fire doors up to 4 feet by 10 feet, and pair doors with the 3/4 inch latch option. Among non-keyed cylindrical lever alternatives, the Corbin Russwin CL3110 Grade 1 vandal resistant passage/closet lever carries a fire rating and covers 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors, and the Falcon K101 Grade 1 heavy duty passage lock is fire rated for 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch doors.
12) Which ANSI function number is the Schlage ND25 exit lock?
ANSI F89, the exit function. If a hardware schedule on your drawings calls for F89 cylindrical exit trim, the ND25 satisfies it, and F89 is the code a spec writer will list for a lever that is always free on the inside with a blind plate outside.
13) How tough is the Schlage ND25 for a high traffic commercial door?
It's built well past the Grade 1 minimum. Testing holds at a minimum 3,100 in-lb of abusive lever torque without gaining access (2.6x the BHMA requirement), 1,600 lbs of offset lever pull against pry bar attack, 100 vertical lever impacts, and 16 million cycles with no visible lever sag and no set screws or O-rings propping it up. Body is zinc and steel, rated heavy duty. For a school corridor, a hospital, or an apartment stair door that gets abused daily, that's the tier you want.
14) What lever style and finish do I need to pick when ordering a Schlage ND25?
Two choices to make. Lever design: Athens, Boardwalk, Broadway, Latitude, Longitude, Omega, Rhodes, Sparta, or Tubular. Finish: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 626AM satin chrome antimicrobial, and 643E aged bronze. 626 satin chrome is the usual commercial default; 626AM is the antimicrobial version for healthcare and food service touchpoints.
15) Which Schlage lever designs meet California fire code for return to door?
The CA fire code requirement covers levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch (64 mm) or less, and Schlage lists Rhodes, Sparta, Tubular, Omega, Longitude and Boardwalk as complying. If you're specifying into California, order the ND25 with one of those six and skip Athens, Broadway and Latitude on that job.
16) Will the Schlage ND25 match the other locks and exit devices in my building?
It's designed to. ND Series trim suites with Von Duprin exit devices and other Schlage products, and it pairs with the Schlage ALX Series Grade 2 locks, so you can run Grade 1 on the abused openings and Grade 2 on the light ones with the same lever look. Same nine lever designs and ten finishes carry across, which is what makes it work on a standardization program across a campus or a portfolio.
17) Does a Grade 1 non-keyed cylindrical lever lock come in a hurricane rated version for Florida?
ND Series locks comply with the Florida Building Code under ASTM E330, E1886 and E1996, and with Miami Dade TAS 201, 202 and 203 for hurricanes. They also meet the Buy American Act and federal FF-H-106C Series 161, which matters on government and institutional work.
18) What other Grade 1 non-keyed commercial lever locks could I use instead of the Schlage ND25?
If you need a lever working on both sides rather than a blind outside plate, the Falcon K101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty passage lever, non-handed, fire rated, covering 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch doors, and the Falcon T101 is another Grade 1 heavy duty passage lever. The Corbin Russwin CL3110 is a Grade 1 vandal resistant passage lever, fire rated, for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors. For a lever that doesn't operate at all, just a pull, the BEST 9K Series 1DT is a Grade 1 heavy duty single dummy trim. None of those is exit-only, so if the blank outside plate is the point, stay with the ND25.
19) What is a lighter duty alternative to the Schlage ND25 for a low traffic non-keyed opening?
The ND25 is a heavy duty Grade 1 cylindrical lever. Where the traffic does not call for Grade 1, Grade 2 non-keyed cylindrical levers include the Falcon B101, a medium duty Grade 2 passage lever with a non-handed design; the BEST 7KC Series single dummy trim, medium duty Grade 2; the Accentra 5301LN Augusta Grade 2 passage/closet lever; the Arrow GL01 Grade 2 passage lock with a Sierra lever for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors; and the Hager 2510 Grade 2 passage lever for 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors. Note that these are passage and dummy functions, not the ND25's exit only blank plate arrangement.
20) Can I use a residential grade passage lever in place of a Schlage ND25 on a commercial opening?
The ND25 is a commercial Grade 1 heavy duty cylindrical lever built in zinc and steel. Grade 3 levers such as the Kwikset 200BRNL Breton passage lever for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, the Kwikset 300BRNL Breton privacy lever, the Callan Asheville Grade 3 passage leverset and the Cal-Royal AUS00 Grade 3 entrance/office lever with a solid brass forged body sit two grades below the ND25 on the ANSI/BHMA scale and are not the same class of device for a high traffic commercial opening.
21) What do I use instead of the ND25 if the opening needs access control or a code entry?
The ND25 is a mechanical, non-electronic cylindrical lever. For openings that need electrified or coded entry, the Corbin Russwin CL33903 is a Grade 1 fail safe electrified cylindrical lever running 12VAC/DC for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors, the Lockey 1150 is a heavy duty mechanical keypad lever set with double combination for 1-1/8 inch to 2 inch doors, and the Delaney LP250 is a Grade 2 electronic keypad leverlock. These change how the door is released; the ND25 releases only by turning the inside lever.
22) Does the Corbin Russwin CL3110 fit the same doors as the Schlage ND25?
The ND25 ships with the 13-247 deadlatch on a 2-3/4 inch backset and the 10-025 ANSI strike, 1-1/4 inch by 4-7/8 inch with a 1-3/16 inch lip. The Corbin Russwin CL3110 Grade 1 vandal resistant passage/closet lever lists a door thickness range of 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch. Confirm the door thickness and the existing latch backset against those figures before treating one as a drop-in for the other, since the two are different functions - the CL3110 is passage on both faces and the ND25 has a blank outside plate.
23) I need a lever for a privacy opening, not exit only - what takes the place of a Schlage ND25?
The ND25's inside lever is always unlocked for immediate egress, so it never secures the room. For a bathroom or bedroom that needs an inside pushbutton, privacy options include the Hager 2540 Grade 2 privacy cylindrical lock with a Withnell lever for 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors, the Arrow MK02-TA privacy cylindrical lock with a Tudor knob for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors with a fire rating, and the Baldwin Estate 5103 privacy lever with the 5048 rose. Note the Arrow uses a knob rather than a lever.
24) Is the Corbin Russwin 585F715 lever a substitute for a Schlage ND25?
No. The ND25 is a complete non-handed cylindrical lock with chassis, latch and strike. The Corbin Russwin 585F715 is a Grade 1 lock lever for the ED8000 pushpad exit device and the CL3300 cylindrical lock series, covering 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors - it is trim that mounts to an existing device or chassis, not a standalone lock for a bored 161 opening.
25) I'm on a budget commercial job. Is there a cheaper alternative to a Grade 1 exit lever lock?
Grade 2 covers lighter duty openings. The Falcon B101 is a Grade 2 medium duty non-handed passage lever, the Design Hardware J75 is a Grade 2 passage lever for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Hager 2510 is a Grade 2 passage lever covering 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch. All three give a working lever on both faces rather than the ND25's blind outside plate, and none is tested to the ND25's 3,100 in-lb torque or 16 million cycles. On a stair door or a corridor that takes real traffic, dropping a grade is a false economy.
26) Does the Schlage ND25 need power or wiring?
None. The ND25 is a purely mechanical cylindrical lock, no electronics, so there's nothing to wire and nothing to fail when the building loses power. The inside lever stays free for egress under all conditions. Electrified options exist elsewhere in the ND family, including four electrified functions that auto-detect 12/24V DC, but the ND25 as an exit lock isn't one of them.
