Schlage L9025 06A 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is the Schlage L9025 exit lock and how does it work on the door?
The L9025 is an exit-only mortise lock: there is no outside trim at all, just a blank plate or nothing on the pull side, and the inside lever is always free so anyone can leave immediately. An auxiliary latch deadlocks the latchbolt when the door closes. Use it on stair discharge doors, back-of-house exits, and any opening where you want people out but nobody coming in through that door. If you need entry from outside, this is the wrong function.
2) Will the Schlage L9025 fit a 1-3/4 inch door with a 2-3/4 inch backset?
That is exactly the standard prep it is built for: 2-3/4 inch backset and 1-3/4 inch door thickness, which is the normal commercial door. The mortise case measures 4-7/16 x 3-5/8 x 1 inch. If your doors are thicker than 1-3/4 inches, the L Series has door thickness options that have to be specified when ordering rather than fitted in the field.
3) Do I have to order the Schlage L9025 handed, or can I flip it in the field?
The lock case is field reversible, so one part covers left and right hand openings and you can stock a single unit for a building. One exception on the trim side: the 12 lever design is ordered as a specific hand, left or right, so if that is the lever you want, get the hand right on the order.
4) Will the Schlage L9025 latch into the strike that is already in my frame?
The latchbolt throws 3/4 inch in stainless steel with an anti-friction tongue, and the lock ships with a 10-072 box strike measuring 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inches, square corner, with a 1-3/16 inch lip. That is the standard ANSI mortise strike prep, so if your frame already has an existing Schlage or ANSI mortise cutout it drops in. If the old strike was a radius corner or a different lip length, use the supplied strike and adjust the frame rather than reusing the old one.
5) Does the Schlage L9025 exit lock take a key or a cylinder?
No cylinder, no key. The L9025 is a non-keyed function with nothing on the outside face, so there is no keyway to specify and nothing to key into your master system. If you need to get in from the outside of that opening, you want a keyed mortise function instead, such as a storeroom or classroom lock.
6) What do I have to specify when ordering a Schlage L9025 mortise exit lock?
Three choices build the part number: lever design, rose or escutcheon design, and finish. Lever options are 01, 02, 03, 05, 06, 07, 12 (ordered left or right hand), 17, 18, plus the Latitude, Longitude and Omega designs. Trim is A or B wrought rose, L full face escutcheon, or N escutcheon. Finishes are 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 630 satin stainless and 643E aged bronze. Same lever, rose and finish go on both sides as standard, with the matching latch and strike included.
7) What is the difference between the Schlage L9025 exit lock and a storeroom or classroom mortise lock?
Function, not build. The L9025 is exit only, with no outside trim, so it locks the opening permanently from the outside. A storeroom lock keeps outside trim locked but lets a key in, which is what you want on a mechanical room; the Cal-Royal NM8080 and the Accentra 8805FL are both Grade 1 storeroom mortise locks. A classroom lock lets a key lock and unlock the outside lever, as with the Cal-Royal NM8070 or the Corbin Russwin ML2003, both Grade 1. Pick exit only when nobody should ever enter through that door.
8) What is the closest equivalent to a Schlage L9025 exit function mortise lock from another manufacturer?
The Sargent 7925 is a heavy duty Grade 1 mortise lock with a dormitory exit function, rose trim and a single cylinder deadbolt, in the 7900 Series. The Schlage L9025 is a Grade 1 non-keyed mortise lock with no outside trim and an inside lever always free for immediate egress. The Sargent 7925 adds a deadbolt and outside cylinder to the exit arrangement, so it changes the door prep and the keying scope; the L9025 has no keyed cylinder at all.
9) If a door does not need one-way egress and both sides should stay free, what mortise lock is used instead of the L9025?
A passage function mortise lock is the substitute. The Falcon MA101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty mortise passage lock with field reversible operation and a fire rating, and the Hager 3810S is a Grade 1 passage mortise lock with rose trim and a 2-3/4 inch backset, matching the 2-3/4 inch backset of the L9025. A passage lock leaves the lever operable from both sides; the L9025 carries no outside trim at all, so there is nothing to grip on the outside face.
10) What mortise lock should be specified when the outside of the door does need to be keyed?
For a keyed outside, a storeroom or classroom function mortise lock replaces the exit function. The Accentra 8805FL is a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lock in the 8800 Series with an Arcadia lever, the Cal-Royal NM8080 is a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lockset with an interchangeable core option for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Corbin Russwin ML2003 is a Grade 1 mortise classroom lockset in the ML2000 Series for 1-3/4 inch doors. The Schlage L9025 is non-keyed with no outside trim, so it is used where the outside face is meant to stay blank.
11) Is a dummy mortise trim the same thing as an exit function mortise lock?
No. The Emtek 3102 Memphis and Emtek 3104 Hamilton are dummy function mortise entrance locksets, and the Falcon MESC600DT is a dummy escutcheon lever trim for M9900 Series exit devices - dummy trim is fixed and operates nothing. The Schlage L9025 is a working Grade 1 mortise lock with a 3/4 inch stainless steel latch with anti-friction tongue that the inside lever retracts for egress. A dummy will not open a latched door.
12) What ANSI function number is the Schlage L9025 exit lock?
F31. If your hardware schedule or the architect's spec calls out an F31 mortise exit function, the L9025 is the Schlage part that satisfies it, in Grade 1 heavy duty. Handing that spec to a distributor with the finish, lever and rose codes is all they need to build the order.
13) Will Schlage L Series levers match the exit devices and other locks already in my building?
They suite. All L Series levers match Von Duprin exit devices and the related L Series products LE, LM9200, LM9300 and LT, so a stair door on an L9025, a classroom door on a keyed L Series, and a cross-corridor door on a Von Duprin device can all carry the same lever and finish. That is the reason facilities standardize on this family: one lever design and one finish code across mixed hardware types.
14) Does the Schlage L9025 exit lock need power or wiring?
None. It is a fully mechanical mortise lock with no electronics, so there is nothing to wire, no fail safe or fail secure decision, and it behaves the same when the building loses power. If you need the opening tied to an access control system, the L Series electrified functions auto detect 12V or 24V DC with selectable EL/EU and options like RX, DPS and latchbolt monitoring, which is a different lock to specify.
15) What are the alternatives to a Schlage L9025 if I want a non-keyed mortise lock on the door?
Two directions, depending on whether the outside should have a lever at all. If you want free passage both ways, the Falcon MA101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty mortise passage lock, field reversible and fire rated, and the Hager 3810S and 3810E are Grade 1 passage mortise locks with a 2-3/4 inch backset in rose and escutcheon trim, covering doors 1-3/4 to 2-1/2 inches. For a behavioral health or detention-adjacent opening, TownSteel MRX-L-01 and MRX-A-01 are Grade 1 heavy duty anti-ligature passage mortise locksets for 1-3/4 inch doors. None of those give you the L9025's blank outside face, which is the whole point of an exit function.
16) Does the Schlage L9025 have a deadbolt?
No deadbolt on the L9025. It latches only, with a 3/4 inch stainless latchbolt that the auxiliary latch deadlocks once the door is closed, which is what keeps it from being carded. If the opening needs a thrown bolt, that is a different function, and Schlage L Series deadbolt functions include an anti-saw pin in the bolt.
17) Is a mortise exit lock like the Schlage L9025 the right choice, or should I use an exit device?
Depends on egress load and code. The L9025 gives a free lever on the inside and a blind outside face, which suits a stair or service door with normal occupancy. Where the code requires panic hardware, you need a rated exit device instead of a lever lock. One practical advantage of staying with the L Series: the levers suite with Von Duprin exit devices, so doors carrying panic hardware and doors carrying this lock still match visually across the building.
18) Is the Schlage L9025 approved for federal and Florida jobs?
It meets the Buy American Act, which is what a government or federally funded project needs on the submittal, and the L Series carries Miami-Dade NOAs and Florida Building Commission listings for hurricane-zone work. It is also listed to ANSI/ASTM F476-76 Grade 40. Certification for the lock itself is ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Grade 1, operational and security.
19) What is the alternative when the door needs credential-based access control rather than a mechanical exit lock?
Electronic mortise locks cover that opening. The Schlage Electronics LEMD-GRW is a Grade 1 ENGAGE Series wireless mortise lock with a 125kHz proximity reader and a 3 hour fire rating, the TownSteel FME-2000 is a Grade 1 heavy duty classroom mortise lockset with RFID for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Dormakaba E-Plex E5086 is a Grade 1 electronic pushbutton and card mortise lock in the E-Plex 5X86 Series. The Schlage L9025 is a mechanical, non-electronic lock, so it needs no power, credentials or programming.
20) For a behavioral health opening that needs egress hardware, what is used instead of a standard lever mortise lock?
Ligature resistant trim is the substitute. The TownSteel MRX-A-01 is a Grade 1 heavy duty passage function mortise lockset with satin stainless steel ligature resistant arch trim for 1-3/4 inch doors, the MRX-L-01 is the Grade 1 heavy duty anti-ligature lever version, and the Marks USA 5PDN is a Grade 1 ligature resistant, ADA compliant hospital passage mortise push/pull paddleset in satin stainless steel. The Schlage L9025 uses a standard lever on the inside face.
21) Will a mortise lock body sold without trim work as a drop-in for a Schlage L9025?
The BEST 45HCAC is a heavy duty mortise lock body with public entrance function and field reversible operation, and the 45HCAINL is a heavy duty mortise lockbody with intruder function - both are lock bodies, sold to be paired with separately chosen trim. The Schlage L9025 ships as a complete assembly with the lever, rose or escutcheon design, coordinating latch and the 10-072 1-1/4 inch by 4-7/8 inch square corner box strike with a 1-3/16 inch lip. Ordering a bare lock body means sourcing trim and strike separately.
22) Which mortise locks fit a 1-5/8 to 1-7/8 inch door where the L9025 will not?
The Alarm Lock DL2700CR Trilogy T2 classroom mortise lock, the DL3500CR Grade 1 classroom mortise lock and the DL4500 Grade 1 electronic mortise deadbolt all list a 1-5/8 to 1-7/8 inch door thickness range. The Schlage L9025 is built for a 1-3/4 inch door with a 2-3/4 inch backset, so it suits a door at the middle of that range but not a thinner or thicker leaf.
23) Can a mortise deadbolt be used in place of an exit function mortise lock?
No - a deadbolt has no latch and no lever. The Sargent 4874 is a double cylinder mortise deadbolt with a 2-3/4 inch backset and the Kaba Ilco 185 Series is a no-handing mortise deadbolt. The Schlage L9025 is an exit only function whose auxiliary latch deadlocks the latchbolt when the door is closed and whose inside lever stays free for immediate egress, which a double cylinder deadbolt does not provide.
24) What replaces an exit function mortise lock on a restroom or bedroom door that needs privacy?
A privacy function mortise lock. The Cal-Royal NM8440 is a Grade 1 privacy mortise lockset with deadbolt for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Hager 3840S is a Grade 1 privacy mortise lock with a 2-3/4 inch backset for doors 1-3/4 to 2 inch. Both let the occupant secure the door from inside; the Schlage L9025 is exit only, with no outside trim and no privacy locking.
25) Is a residential-style mortise lock body with a 2-1/2 inch backset interchangeable with a commercial exit mortise lock?
No. The Baldwin 6301 entry/apartment lever by lever and the Baldwin 6310 entry/storeroom mortise lock bodies use a 2-1/2 inch backset, and the Marks USA 21AC and 22AC ornamental iron mortise locks list a 1 inch door thickness. The Schlage L9025 is a commercial lock with a 2-3/4 inch backset on a 1-3/4 inch door and a 4-7/16 inch by 3-5/8 inch by 1 inch case. Different backset and door thickness mean a different mortise pocket and a different cross-bore layout.
26) What mortise option covers an opening that needs remote electric release rather than a fixed non-keyed exit function?
The Command Access ML190 Series is a heavy-duty motorized mortise lock with storeroom function, field selectable EL/EU operation and 24VDC power, and the BEST 45HW Series is a heavy duty wired electromechanical mortise lock with 12V/24V operation. The Schlage L9025 is non-electronic, so its inside lever remains mechanically free for egress with no wiring, power supply or door loop required.
27) What is the Schlage L9025 lock case made of, and is it heavy enough for a busy exit door?
The case is cold rolled steel with zinc dichromate plating, rated heavy duty and certified to ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 for both operational and security. Bolt parts are stainless steel. For high-traffic openings like stairwells and service exits, that is the top commercial durability tier, and the security blocking hub prevents picking the lock by pulling the levers off.
28) What is the difference between the Schlage L9025 and the Schlage Electronics LE Series mortise locks?
The Schlage Electronics LEBMB-ADD is a Grade 2 mobile-enabled mortise lock with a push button and LED covering privacy, office and apartment functions on a 1-3/4 inch door with a 3 hour fire rating. The Schlage L9025 is a Grade 1 heavy duty mechanical mortise lock, non-keyed, exit only, on a 1-3/4 inch door. The LE unit is credential driven and carries a Grade 2 rating; the L9025 is Grade 1 and purely mechanical.
29) Which mortise locks besides the Schlage L9025 are field reversible?
The BEST 45HCAC heavy duty public entrance mortise lock body and the Falcon MA101 Grade 1 heavy duty mortise passage lock are both field reversible. The Schlage L9025 is also field reversible for hand, so one part number covers both hands of an opening. Note that in the 12 lever style the L9025 is ordered as a specific left hand or right hand lever.
30) Is a medium duty electronic tubular mortise latch an acceptable substitute for a Grade 1 mortise exit lock?
The Codelocks CL2255 is a medium duty electronic tubular mortise latch in the CL2000 Series with a brushed steel finish. The Schlage L9025 is a heavy duty Grade 1 mortise lock certified to ANSI/BHMA F31 with a CRS body carrying zinc dichromate plating. The two sit at different duty levels, so the CL2255 is the choice where a coded medium duty latch suits the traffic and the L9025 where Grade 1 heavy duty is specified.
