1) What does the Schlage PM026 exit lock function actually do on the door?
The PM026 is an exit lock with cylinder: there is a key cylinder on the outside with no lever, and a lever on the inside only. The inside lever is always free, so anyone inside can leave immediately by turning the lever. Entry from the outside is by key. It uses a latchbolt with a deadlocking auxiliary latch. Common spots for it are stair discharge doors, back-of-house exits and service doors where you want egress but no outside handle.
2) Will the Schlage PM026 mortise lock fit a 2-inch thick door?
Standard setup is 1-3/4 inch, with 1-3/8 inch the minimum. The lock will go up to 2-1/2 inches thick, but anything over 1-3/4 inches has to be specified at time of order along with the position in the door, and that is only available in the EE trim arrangement. So yes for a 2 inch door, but it has to be called out on the order, not adjusted in the field.
3) Do I need to order a Schlage PM026 mortise lock left hand or right hand?
No handing to specify. The PM Series mortise case is field reversible, so the same lock covers either hand and you set it during installation. That is useful for a property manager stocking one spare for a building with doors swinging both ways.
4) What backset does the Schlage PM026 mortise lock use, and will it drop into an existing mortise pocket?
2-3/4 inch backset only, no other option in the PM Series. The case measures 4-7/16 x 6-1/16 x 1 inch. One thing to watch on a retrofit: Schlage states that PM Series and L Series case and cover holes differ, so a PM case is not a straight hole-for-hole swap into an L Series prep even though the pocket size is similar.
5) Does the Schlage PM026 come with the cylinder, or do I supply my own?
Depends which cylinder option you order. Choices are B (less SFIC), J (less FSIC), L (less conventional 6-pin), P (conventional 6-pin cylinder keyed alike in groups of 5) and T (FSIC construction core). The B, J and L options ship prepped but without the cylinder, so a locksmith supplies the core to match the building's existing key system. Only P arrives with a working cylinder, and T gives you a construction core for the jobsite until permanent cores go in.
6) I need a mortise passage lock with levers on both sides, not an exit lock. What should I look at instead?
An exit lock with cylinder has no outside lever at all, so it is wrong for a corridor or closet door where people need to push through from both directions. For a true passage function the Falcon MA101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty mortise passage lock, also field reversible, from the same Allegion family. The Hager 3810S (rose) and 3810E (escutcheon) are Grade 1 mortise passage locks on a 2-3/4 inch backset that take doors 1-3/4 to 2-1/2 inches. For anti-ligature openings, the TownSteel MRX-L-01 lever and MRX-A-01 arch trim are Grade 1 passage mortise locksets.
7) What is a straight cross-brand equivalent to the Schlage PM026 mortise lock for a Grade 1 passage opening?
The Falcon MA101 is the closest peer for a heavy duty Grade 1 mortise passage opening. Like the PM026, it is a Grade 1 mortise lock with a Passage/Hall/Closet function and field reversible handing, and it is fire rated.
