Schlage PM026P NEPA 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does the Schlage PM026 exit lock function actually do on the door?
The PM026 is an exit lock with cylinder: there is a key cylinder on the outside with no outside lever, and a lever on the inside only. The inside lever is always free, so egress is immediate at all times. It has a latchbolt with a deadlocking auxiliary latch. Use it on a door where people leave freely but outside entry is by key only.
2) Does the Schlage PM026 come in left hand and right hand versions, or do I have to pick?
No handing to pick. The PM Series mortise case is field reversible, so one lock covers both hands and you set it on site. That is useful for a property manager stocking spares across a mixed building.
3) Do I have to order a cylinder separately with the Schlage PM026?
That is an ordering choice. The cylinder options are B less SFIC, J less FSIC, L less conventional 6-pin, P conventional 6-pin keyed 5, and T FSIC construction core. The less-cylinder options ship without a cylinder so you can fit your own core into an existing key system; the P option arrives with a conventional 6-pin cylinder. If you run small format interchangeable cores in the building, order B and drop your core in.
4) Will the Schlage PM026 case drop into an existing Schlage L Series mortise pocket?
Not a straight swap. Schlage states that PM and L Series case and cover holes differ, so the mounting holes will not line up even though both are mortise cases. The PM case is 4-7/16 by 6-1/16 by 1 inch. Plan on new case prep rather than reusing L Series screw holes.
5) I need a plain passage mortise lock, no cylinder at all. Is the PM026 the right one?
No. The PM026 carries an outside key cylinder, so if you want levers both sides and no key at all, look at a straight passage mortise lock instead. The Falcon MA101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty mortise passage lock with field reversible operation, and the Hager 3810S (rose) and 3810E (escutcheon) are Grade 1 passage mortise locks on a 2-3/4 inch backset. TownSteel MRX-L-01 is the Grade 1 passage option if the opening needs anti-ligature trim.
6) Which mortise lock should I use instead of the Schlage PM026 on a classroom door?
The PM026 is a Passage function lock and cannot lock a classroom door. For that opening, the Corbin Russwin ML2003 is a Grade 1 mortise classroom lockset for 1-3/4 inch doors, the Cal-Royal NM8070 is a Grade 1 classroom mortise lockset with auxiliary deadlatch for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Marks USA LA318GJ is a Grade 1 classroom security indicator mortise lockset with ANSI strike for 1-3/4 inch doors.
7) I need a keyed mortise lock instead of the Schlage PM026 - what should I look at?
The PM026 is listed as non-keyed with a Passage lock function, so the latch retracts from either side at all times. For a keyed opening, the Accentra 8805FL is a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lock in the 8800 Series, and the Cal-Royal NM8080 is a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lockset with an interchangeable core option. For an office or entrance opening, Cal-Royal NM8050 is a Grade 1 office/entrance mortise lockset with auxiliary deadlatch.
8) Is there a privacy mortise lock alternative to the Schlage PM026 for restrooms or bedrooms?
The PM026 is a non-keyed Passage function lock with no locking at the lever, so it will not provide privacy. The Hager 3840S is a Grade 1 privacy mortise lock on a 2-3/4 inch backset for 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors, and the Cal-Royal NM8440 is a Grade 1 privacy mortise lockset with deadbolt for 1-3/4 inch doors.
9) What mortise lock takes the place of the Schlage PM026 in a behavioral health or anti-ligature application?
The PM026 uses a conventional zinc lever on rose or N escutcheon trim. Where ligature resistance is specified, TownSteel offers the same Grade 1 Passage/Hall/Closet function in stainless steel: the MRX-L-01 with an anti-ligature lever and the MRX-A-01 with arch trim, both heavy duty and for 1-3/4 inch doors. The Marks USA 5PDN is a Grade 1 hospital passage mortise push/pull paddleset that is ligature resistant and ADA compliant in satin stainless steel.
10) Does the Schlage PM026 work as a dormitory or corridor exit lock, or do I need something else?
The PM026 is a non-keyed Passage function lock; the latchbolt retracts by lever from either side at all times, with no deadbolt. For a corridor or dormitory opening that needs a deadbolt thrown from inside, the Sargent 7925 is a Grade 1 heavy duty dormitory exit function mortise lock with rose trim and a single cylinder deadbolt.
11) Can I match the PM Series mortise locks to the tubular locks on the rest of my building?
Yes. The PM Series mortise locks share lever and rose styles with the Schlage PT Series tubular locks, so a Neptune lever on a mortise-prepped corridor door matches a Neptune PT lever on a bored office door. The PM line is also made to suite with other Allegion products for one key system across the property.
12) Is the Schlage PM026 Grade 1, and what ANSI function is it?
Grade 1, built for commercial use, and catalogued under ANSI/BHMA function F01. The PM Series covers 26 functions overall including three electrified and four mortise deadbolt functions; the PM026 itself is the mechanical exit lock with cylinder and is not an electronic lock.
13) What is the difference between the PM026 exit lock and a storeroom mortise lock?
An exit lock like the PM026 has no outside lever at all, only a key cylinder, so the outside face is deliberately blank and nobody can pull the door open from the corridor. A storeroom function keeps an outside lever that is always locked until the key turns it. If you want the outside lever, the Cal-Royal NM8080 is a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lockset for 1-3/4 inch doors with an interchangeable core option, and the Accentra 8805FL is a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lock with the Arcadia lever.
14) Does the Schlage PM026 have a deadbolt?
The PM026 is a latchbolt function with a deadlocking auxiliary latch, not a deadbolt lock. The PM Series does offer four mortise deadbolt functions if you need one, and the 1 inch throw stainless deadbolt quoted for the series belongs to those functions. For a standalone mortise deadbolt, the Sargent 4874 is a double cylinder mortise deadbolt on a 2-3/4 inch backset.
15) Can an electronic mortise lock replace the Schlage PM026, and what changes?
The PM026 is a mechanical, non-electronic mortise lock. Electronic mortise options carry credential control instead: the Schlage CO-100-MS-40-KP is a Grade 1 standalone keypad mortise lock for 1-3/4 inch doors, the Schlage ENGAGE LEMD-GRW is a Grade 1 wireless mortise lock with a 125kHz proximity reader and a 3 hour fire rating, and the TownSteel FME-2000 is a Grade 1 heavy duty RFID mortise lockset for 1-3/4 inch doors. All of these add power and credential management that the PM026 does not require.
16) Is a Baldwin 6301 or 6310 mortise lock body a drop-in substitute for the Schlage PM026?
No. The PM026 is built on a 2-3/4 inch backset only, while the Baldwin 6301 and 6310 mortise lock bodies are 2-1/2 inch backset, so the mortise pocket and cylinder location differ. The Baldwin bodies are also entrance/apartment and entrance/storeroom functions rather than the PM026's Passage function.
17) I need a mortise deadbolt only, not the Schlage PM026 lockset - what are the options?
The PM026 is a Passage function lockset with lever trim, not a standalone deadbolt. For deadbolt-only mortise hardware, the Sargent 4874 is a double cylinder mortise deadbolt on a 2-3/4 inch backset matching the PM026 backset, and the Kaba Ilco 185 Series is a no-handing mortise deadbolt.
18) Does the Schlage PM026 fit a 1-5/8 inch or 1-7/8 inch door like the Alarm Lock Trilogy mortise locks?
The PM026 is built for 1-3/4 inch doors as standard. The Alarm Lock Trilogy mortise locks, including the Grade 1 DL2700CR and DL3500CR classroom function models and the DL4500 Grade 1 electronic mortise deadbolt, are listed for a 1-5/8 inch to 1-7/8 inch door thickness range, so confirm the door before substituting either direction.
19) What is the PM026 mortise case made of, and will it hold up in a coastal or high-traffic building?
The case is cold rolled steel with corrosion resistant zinc dichromate plating, and the latch is stainless steel with an anti-friction tongue. Levers are zinc across the 10 designs, escutcheons wrought brass, roses brass. It is a Grade 1 commercial lock, which is the heaviest ANSI/BHMA duty tier and the usual spec for high-traffic openings.
20) Are Emtek mortise entrance locksets an alternative to the Schlage PM026?
They serve a different purpose. The Emtek 3019 Brisbane, 3102 Memphis, 3104 Hamilton and 3106 Manhattan mortise entrance locksets are Dummy function, meaning no latch operation at all. The PM026 is a commercial Grade 1 mortise lock whose latchbolt is retracted by the lever from either side.
