Schlage ND SERIES OVERVIEW

The Schlage ND Series offers a full breadth of commercial lock options with a suited combination of mechanical, electrified and electronic options. This overview covers common characteristics for the mechanical and electrified lock information.

Beyond grade 1 performance is the hallmark of the mechanical and electrified locks. ND Series locks are tested to withstand 3,100 in-lb. of abusive lever torque - more than 2 1/2 times the Grade 1 standard requirement. Offset lever pull testing up to 1,600 lbs. assures you of the lock's superb resistance against pry bar attacks. More than strong, ND Series is built to last and shows nearly zero droop or wobble after 16 million cycles.

All ND Series locks including electronic and ligature-resistant trim use the common cylindrical ANSI 161 door preparation making them easily interchangeable. They are ideal for all new construction and retrofit applications.

ND Series Mechanical Lock

The ND mechanical lock, along with being Schlage’s best selling mechanical lock, is the foundation for both the wired electrified and NDE wireless electronic lock. Not only did Schlage invent the cylindrical lock, but we continue to make it better with capabilities such as:
  • Unparalleled strength - the lock prevents access even when subjected to torque loads up to 3,100 in-lbs (2.6x BHMA1), withstands pry bar attacks of 1,600 lbs (8x BHMA requirements1), and withstands 100 hammer blows (20x BHMA requirements1, 2)
  • Exceptional durability - cycle tested to over 16M cycles (16x BHMA requirements1) with near zero droop or wobble - without the use of set screws or O-rings
  • Improved feel - improved strength and durability are more than numbers, you can actually feel it in the lock
  • Improved installation - installation is even easier than before (and withoutany set screws or O-rings)

Vandlgard™ trim is specifically designed for highly abusive environments. The outside lever rotates freely up and down when locked, limiting the ability of vandals to apply excessive force to the chassis.

Schlage ND25x80PD RHO 626 XN12-005 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does the Schlage ND25x80 storeroom exit lock actually do on the door?
There is no outside trim to operate: the ND25x80 has a blank plate on the outside, so the door cannot be opened from the corridor side at all. Inside, the lever is fixed (it does not rotate to retract), and the key in that inside lever is what pulls the latch back. It is an exit-only opening where you want people to leave under key control and nobody to come in through the door. When ordering, it is specified per XN12-005.
2) Will the ND25x80 fit my existing door prep, or do I have to redrill?
It uses the standard cylindrical ANSI 161 door preparation shared across the whole ND Series, so it drops into an opening already prepped for an ND lock without new boring. The standard latch is the 13-247 deadlatch on a 2-3/4 inch backset with a 1-1/8 x 2-1/4 inch square corner faceplate, and door thickness is 1-3/4 inches. Check that your existing latch bore is on the 2-3/4 inch backset and not 2-3/8 inches, which is the other common backset, before you assume a straight swap.
3) Will the ND25x80 latch into the strike that is already in my frame?
The lock ships with the 10-025 ANSI strike, 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inches with a 1-3/16 inch lip and no box. If your frame is already cut for an ANSI 4-7/8 inch strike, the supplied one drops straight in. If your existing strike is a smaller T-strike or a round corner residential strike, the frame will need to be prepped for the ANSI cutout. The 1-3/16 inch lip length is measured for a standard jamb; a deeper stop or an applied frame condition can call for a longer lip.
4) Can I get the ND25x80 keyed alike with the other locks in my building?
Yes. Keying is a required choice at order: KD keyed different is standard, KA keyed alike ties multiple locks to one key, or you can order without keying if you are supplying your own cylinders. Standard cylinder is the P conventional 6-pin in the Schlage C keyway, and each keyed lock comes with two nickel silver cut keys. If you are on a restricted or master keyed system, put the bitting and system details in the special keying field on the order.
5) What is the difference between the J, L, and P cylinder options on the ND lever lock?
P is the standard conventional 6-pin cylinder in the Schlage C keyway, shipped keyed and ready to hang. L is less cylinder, for when you are installing your own conventional cylinder. J is less FSIC, which means the lock is built to take a full size interchangeable core you supply, so a locksmith or a facility on an SFIC/FSIC program can pop their own core in on site. Pick L or J only if you already have cores or a keying house lined up, because neither one arrives with a working key.
6) Is there a Grade 2 storeroom lever lock that can be used instead of a Schlage ND25x80 on a lower traffic door?
Two Grade 2 storeroom levers exist as lighter alternatives: the Cal-Royal AG05 storeroom lockset with deadlocking latchbolt, for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, and the Hager 2580 storeroom lock with the Withnell lever, for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch. Both are conventional storeroom locks with an outside keyed cylinder and a locked outside lever. The ND25x80 is a Grade 1 storeroom exit lock with a blank plate outside, so it is not a like-for-like swap in function: choose the Cal-Royal or Hager only where the door needs outside key entry, not exit-only operation.
7) What is the closest Grade 1 storeroom cylindrical lever lock to the Schlage ND25x80 if the ND is not the right fit?
Within heavy duty Grade 1 cylindrical lever locks, the Dexter C1000 Series Entry/Office lock is the nearest keyed cylindrical peer, though it is an Entrance/Office function rather than storeroom, and it covers doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch. The ND25x80 itself is a Grade 1 heavy duty cylindrical storeroom exit lock with a blank plate outside and a key in the fixed inside lever that retracts the latch, on a 1-3/4 inch door. If the opening needs an outside keyed cylinder and outside access, the Dexter C1000 Entry/Office is the different animal; the ND25x80 gives no outside operation at all.
8) Which cylindrical lever locks look like a substitute for the Schlage ND25x80 but are not?
The most common mismatches are non-keyed levers that share the same cylindrical chassis footprint. The Falcon K101 and Falcon T101 are both Grade 1 heavy duty passage locks, and the Design Hardware X75 is a Grade 1 passage lever for a 1-3/4 inch door: passage function means the latch retracts from either side at all times, with no cylinder. The BEST 9K Series 1DT is a Grade 1 single dummy trim, a fixed lever with no latch at all. The ND25x80 is a keyed single cylinder storeroom function with two nickel silver keys supplied, so none of those four control access.
9) Which alternatives to the Schlage ND25x80 will work on an existing Schlage C keyway master key system?
The ND25x80 ships standard with the P conventional 6-pin cylinder in the Schlage C keyway and uses the S123 keyway family, so it drops onto an existing Schlage C system directly. Among other brands, the Cal-Royal AG00 entrance lever and AG03 classroom lever are supplied with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different, and the Arrow MK33-BD-CS asylum lock uses a conventional cylinder in the Schlage C keyway. For Yale hardware, the Accentra 107S is a Schlage cylinder adapter kit. Note the ND25x80 is also orderable as L less cylinder or J less FSIC cylinder if the cylinders are being supplied from an existing system.
10) Is the ND25x80 handed, and do I need to specify left or right?
Non-handed. You order one part number and it works on a left or right hand door, which is why a facility can stock a single lock for openings that swing both ways. Field-reversal is not something you have to do at install.
11) Which lever style and finish do I pick to match the other doors in the building?
Nine lever designs are offered: Athens, Boardwalk, Broadway, Latitude, Longitude, Omega, Rhodes, Sparta and Tubular. Finishes run 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 626AM satin chrome antimicrobial and 643E aged bronze. One thing to watch in California: the CA fire code compliance covers levers with a 1/2 inch or less return to door, which means Rhodes, Sparta, Tubular, Omega, Longitude and Boardwalk. Healthcare jobs often specify 626AM for the antimicrobial coating.
12) Will this Schlage lever match the Von Duprin exit devices and other hardware already specified on the job?
ND Series is designed to suite with Von Duprin exit devices and other Schlage products, and it also pairs visually with Schlage ALX Series Grade 2 locks so you can run Grade 1 on the high traffic openings and Grade 2 elsewhere without a mismatch in the corridor. If you need the same lever look on a Corbin Russwin exit device instead, the Corbin Russwin 585F715 lock lever is made for the ED8000 pushpad device.
13) Does the ND25x80 take my existing non-Schlage cylinders?
Three spring cage sets cover all Schlage cylinder formats plus eight competitive cylinder formats, so a building already keyed on another manufacturer's system can often keep its keyway. Order the L less cylinder option if you are supplying conventional cylinders yourself. Two things to weigh: the beyond Grade 1 strength figures are certified with Schlage cylinders, and the high security option requires Primus XP UL 437 listed cylinders.
14) What Grade 1 cylindrical lever alternatives are there if I cannot get the Schlage ND?
Several Grade 1 heavy duty cylindrical lever platforms are available: BEST 9K Series, Falcon K Series (1-3/8 to 2-1/4 inch door thickness, fire rated), Falcon T Series with pressure release, the Dexter C1000 Series, and Corbin Russwin CL3100 vandal resistant for 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors. Note the door range differences, the ND25x80 is set up for 1-3/4 inch doors, so on a thin 1-3/8 inch door the Falcon K or a Dexter C1000 covers a range the Schlage does not. None of those peers is listed with the ND25x80's blank plate exit only function; match the function code before substituting.
15) Does the ND25x80 need power or wiring at the door?
No power at all. It is a purely mechanical cylindrical lock, no electronics, no wiring, no transfer hinge or power supply to coordinate. If the project later calls for access control on that opening, the same ANSI 161 prep carries the wired electrified ND and the NDE wireless electronic versions, so the door prep does not change when you upgrade.
16) What should be used instead of a Schlage ND25x80 on a door that must stay thicker than 1-3/4 inch?
The ND25x80 is built for a 1-3/4 inch door. For thicker leaves, Grade 1 cylindrical peers with published range include the Falcon K101 passage lock at 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch and the Corbin Russwin CL3110 vandal resistant passage lock at 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch, and the Dexter C1000 Asylum lock at 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch. The K101 and CL3110 are passage function with no cylinder; the Dexter C1000 Asylum is an asylum/institution function keyed both sides. None of them reproduce the exit-only storeroom behavior of the ND25x80.
17) What is the difference between a Schlage ND25x80 storeroom exit lock and a classroom or classroom security lever?
The ND25x80 has a blank plate outside and a key in the fixed inside lever that retracts the latch, so it controls a door that is entered from elsewhere and exited through this opening. A classroom lever such as the Dexter C1000 Classroom is keyed from the outside and clutching, and the Dexter C1000 Classroom Security version adds inside keyed locking; both cover doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch and are Grade 1. If the requirement is to lock or unlock the outside lever with a key from either face, the classroom or classroom security lock is the right function; the ND25x80 offers no outside trim to lock.
18) If a stairwell or utility door needs electrified release rather than a mechanical Schlage ND25x80, what cylindrical lock covers that?
The ND25x80 is a mechanical, non-electronic cylindrical lock. For an access-controlled opening on the same cylindrical prep, the Corbin Russwin CL33903 is a Grade 1 fail safe electrified cylindrical lever lock operating on 12VAC/DC, for doors 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch, offered with the NZ lever and D rose. Fail safe means the lever unlocks on loss of power, which suits egress-path and stairwell returns; the ND25x80 holds its function with no wiring run to the door.
19) Can a keypad or code-entry lever replace a Schlage ND25x80 so a storeroom does not need keys issued?
It changes the credential, not the function. The Lockey 1150 is a heavy duty mechanical keypad lever set with double combination for doors 1-1/8 inch to 2 inch, needing no wiring or battery, and the Delaney LP250 is a Grade 2 electronic keypad leverlock. The Emtek Classic keypad leverset is the decorative equivalent. The ND25x80 works the opposite way around from all of them: nothing operates from the outside face at all, and the key at the inside lever retracts the latch, so a keypad on the outside is a functional change of intent for the opening, not a credential swap.
20) Which cylindrical lever locks besides the Schlage ND25x80 carry a fire rating for a labeled door?
Among the cylindrical peers, the Corbin Russwin CL3110 vandal resistant passage lock is fire rated for doors 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch, and the Falcon K101 Grade 1 passage lock is fire rated for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch. Both are passage function with no keying. The ND25x80 is UL/cUL listed for 3 hour A label single fire doors up to 4 feet by 10 feet, and pair doors 8 feet by 8 feet at 3 hours with the 3/4 inch latch option, while also giving keyed storeroom control the passage peers do not.
21) Does the Schlage ND lock meet Buy American requirements for a government job?
Yes, ND Series meets the Buy American Act and also meets Federal specification FF-H-106C Series 161. For hurricane zone work it complies with the Florida Building Code under ASTM E330, E1886 and E1996, and Miami Dade TAS 201, 202 and 203.
22) For a residential-grade opening, is a Grade 3 lever an acceptable stand-in for a Schlage ND25x80?
Only where the traffic and the spec allow it. The ND25x80 is a Grade 1 heavy duty commercial cylindrical lock in zinc and steel. Grade 3 peers include the Cal-Royal AUS00 entrance/office lever with a solid brass forged body for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, the Callan Artino entrance leverset, and the Kwikset 200BRNL Breton passage lever for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors. Those are entrance and passage functions, not storeroom exit, and they sit two grades below on the ANSI/BHMA scale, so a job with a Grade 1 storeroom line item on the drawing will not accept them.
23) What pairs with a Schlage ND25x80 on the inactive leaf or on a door that needs matching trim without a latch?
A dummy trim carries the same lever appearance with no chassis. Grade 1 options include the BEST 9K Series 1DT single dummy trim, heavy duty and non-keyed, and the Accentra 455LN Augusta Grade 1 single dummy. The BEST 7KC Series 1DT is the Grade 2 medium duty version of the same idea, and Baldwin Estate 5103 half dummies are offered handed, left and right. The ND25x80 itself is non-handed, so the working leaf does not need to be specified for hand; a handed half dummy does.
24) Which alternatives to the Schlage ND25x80 come in a satin chrome or 626 style finish to match existing hardware?
The ND25x80 is offered in ten finishes including 626 satin chrome, 626AM satin chrome antimicrobial, 625 bright chrome, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 612 satin bronze, 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass and 643E aged bronze, across nine lever styles from Athens and Rhodes to Sparta and Tubular. Among peers, the Hager 2580 storeroom lock is listed in 26D and the Bravura Miramar passage leverset in US4 satin brass. Where a facility is standardizing on satin chrome across a fleet of doors, the ND range covers the finish and lever design in the same call.
