Schlage ND81BD RHO 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Schlage ND81 fit my door, and what backset does it use?
The ND81 is set up for a 1-3/4 inch door with a 2-3/4 inch backset. It ships with the 13-247 deadlatch, square corner faceplate, 1-1/8 x 2-1/4 inches. If your existing prep is 2-3/8 inch backset, that latch will not reach, so you would need to order a different latch or reprep. The lock is non-handed, so there is nothing to specify for left or right swing.
2) What does the ND81 storeroom function actually do at the door?
Storeroom function, ANSI F81. The outside lever is always locked and a key retracts the latch for entry; the inside lever is always free to leave. There is no button and no way to leave the outside lever unlocked, which is the point on a mechanical room, electrical closet, or stock room that must never be left open by accident. If you want an opening that can be left unlocked during the day, look at an entrance or entrance/office function instead, not this one.
3) Can I key a Schlage ND81 into my existing master key system?
Yes, and how you order it depends on the system you run. The ND81 comes five ways on the cylinder: PD conventional 6-pin in the Schlage C keyway, LD less cylinder if you are supplying your own, BD full-size interchangeable core prep less core, JD Schlage FSIC prep less core, and TD FSIC prep supplied with a construction core for the build phase. It is a single cylinder lock, keyed different as standard with two nickel silver cut keys per lock. If you already run small format or full size cores, order the prep less core and pin your own.
4) I need to standardize a whole building on one lever look. Can I match the ND81 across other functions and doors?
That is what the ND Series is built for. All ND locks share the same ANSI 161 prep and there are 24 mechanical and 4 electrified functions in the family, so passage (ND10), privacy (ND40), classroom (ND70) and storeroom (ND80) openings all take the same lever and rose. The ten finishes run 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 626AM satin chrome antimicrobial and 643E aged bronze. ND also suites with Schlage ALX Grade 2 locks and with Von Duprin exit devices, so lower-traffic doors and exit hardware can carry the same trim.
5) I have a 2 inch thick door. Will the ND81 work?
No, not as standard. The ND81 is specified for a 1-3/4 inch door. For thicker leaves, ZenSupply carries Grade 1 cylindrical levers with wider ranges, including the Falcon K101 K Series at 1-3/8 to 2-1/4 inches and the Corbin Russwin CL3100 Series at 1-3/4 to 2 inches, though both of those are passage function rather than storeroom, so the function has to be matched separately.
6) What is the closest Grade 1 alternative to the Schlage ND81 storeroom lever if a different brand is specified?
For a Grade 1 cylindrical lever in storeroom service, the ND81 is a Grade 1 cylindrical lever lock with a storeroom function. Among other commercial cylindrical Grade 1 levers, the Falcon K101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty cylindrical lever with a passage function and a 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch door thickness range, and the Corbin Russwin CL3110 is a Grade 1 vandal resistant cylindrical lever in passage/closet function for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors. Both are non-keyed passage functions, so neither holds a door locked against a key the way a storeroom lock does - if the opening needs the keyed storeroom behavior, the ND81 is the function to match.
7) Is there a lighter duty storeroom lever for a low traffic closet instead of a Grade 1 Schlage ND81?
Yes. The Cal-Royal AG05 is a Grade 2 storeroom lever lockset with a deadlocking latchbolt, for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch thick, and the Hager 2580 with Withnell lever is a Grade 2 storeroom cylindrical lock for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch. Both give the same keyed storeroom behavior at Grade 2. The Schlage ND81 is Grade 1 heavy duty, tested to 16 million cycles, which is what separates it on a door that is opened all day.
8) The Schlage ND81 storeroom function is wrong for a classroom door - what keyed lever should be used instead?
A storeroom lock keeps the outside lever locked at all times and is released only by key, which is not classroom behavior. For a classroom opening, the Dexter C1000 is a Grade 1 clutching keyed cylindrical lever in classroom function for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, and a classroom security version of the C1000 is also made in Grade 1 for the same door range. Cal-Royal also makes the AG03 classroom lever, Grade 2, with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different and a 2-3/4 inch backset. Schlage's own classroom function in the same series is the ND70, ANSI F84.
9) What should be used in place of a Schlage ND81 on an office door where staff need to lock and unlock the outside lever themselves?
A storeroom lock does not give the user that control - the outside lever stays locked. For an entry or office opening, the Dexter C1000 is a Grade 1 clutching keyed cylindrical lever in entry/office function for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, the Hager 2525 is a Grade 2 commercial cylindrical entry lever for 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors, and the Falcon B511CP6D is a Grade 2 medium duty cylindrical lever in entry/office function. In the Schlage line the matching functions are the ND50 entrance/office, ANSI F82, and the ND53 entrance lock, ANSI F109.
10) Which Schlage C keyway levers from other brands will key into the same system as a Schlage ND81 with a PD conventional cylinder?
The ND81 in the PD trim carries a conventional 6-pin cylinder in the Schlage C keyway. Levers from other lines built on that keyway include the Cal-Royal AG00 entrance lever, Grade 2, 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different on a 2-3/8 inch backset, the Cal-Royal AG03 classroom lever, Grade 2, 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different on a 2-3/4 inch backset, and the Arrow MK33-BD-CS asylum lock with a conventional Schlage C keyway cylinder. Note the AG00 uses a 2-3/8 inch backset while the ND81 is prepped for 2-3/4 inch.
11) Will an electrified cylindrical lever work in the same door prep as a Schlage ND81 if the storeroom later goes on access control?
The ND Series uses the common cylindrical ANSI 161 door preparation across mechanical, electrified and electronic trim, so those are interchangeable in the same prep. From another brand, the Corbin Russwin CL33903 is a Grade 1 fail safe electrified cylindrical lever running 12VAC/DC for doors 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch. That one is wired and fail safe - it unlocks on power loss - which is the opposite behavior from a mechanical storeroom lock that stays locked no matter what.
12) Which lever styles on the ND81 are compliant for a California fire code job?
Levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch or less comply, and Schlage names those as Rhodes, Sparta, Tubular, Omega, Longitude and Boardwalk. The ND81 offers nine lever designs in total: Athens, Boardwalk, Broadway, Latitude, Longitude, Omega, Rhodes, Sparta and Tubular. So if the job is under CA fire code, pick from the six named above rather than Athens, Broadway or Latitude.
13) Will the strike that comes with the ND81 fit my hollow metal frame?
The standard strike is the 10-025, an ANSI strike 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inches with a 1-3/16 inch lip, supplied with no box. That is the ANSI 4-7/8 frame cutout most hollow metal frames are prepped for, so it drops straight in. Since no dust box ships with it, if your frame prep needs one you will need to add it. The 1-3/16 inch lip suits a standard flush frame face; a deep frame stop or a wall return close to the jamb may call for a longer lip strike.
14) Is a Grade 1 lock like the Schlage ND81 worth it over a Grade 2 storeroom lever?
It comes down to traffic and abuse. The ND81 is a Grade 1 heavy duty lock tested to over 16 million cycles with near zero lever droop, 3,100 in-lb of abusive lever torque and 1,600 lbs of offset lever pull, without set screws or O-rings. That is what you want on a school corridor, a hospital, or a public storage room that gets kicked and hung on. 15) What do I have to specify when ordering a Schlage ND81, and what comes in the box?
Three choices settle it: lever style (nine designs), finish (ten options), and cylinder prep (PD conventional 6-pin Schlage C, LD less cylinder, BD or JD FSIC prep less core, TD FSIC prep with construction core). Same lever, rose and finish go on both sides. Included as standard: the 13-247 deadlatch with 2-3/4 inch backset, the 10-025 ANSI strike, and two cut nickel silver keys with a PD or FSIC-with-core order. Nothing is handed, so no hand to call out.
16) Can I use a non-Schlage cylinder in an ND Series lock?
Yes. Three spring cage sets support all Schlage formats plus eight competitive cylinder formats, so if your building is keyed on another manufacturer's system you can order the ND81 as LD less cylinder and drop your own in. One caveat Schlage states plainly: the beyond-Grade-1 numbers (3,100 in-lb torque, 1,600 lb offset pull) apply with Schlage cylinders, conventional, FSIC or SFIC. With a non-Schlage cylinder the lock still exceeds BHMA Grade 1 requirements but may not hit those higher figures.
17) Does the ND81 need power or wiring run to the door?
No. The ND81 is purely mechanical, a keyed cylindrical lever lock with no electronics, so there is no power transfer hinge, no wiring, and no access control head end to plan for. If you need the door to release on a card read or a fire alarm signal, the ND Series does include four electrified functions and a wireless NDE electronic version built on the same chassis and the same ANSI 161 prep, so you can put an electrified opening next to a mechanical one and have them match.
18) Is the Schlage ND81 acceptable on a federal or Buy American job?
It meets the Buy American Act and Federal specification FF-H-106C Series 161. It also complies with the Florida Building Code (ASTM E330, E1886, E1996) and Miami Dade TAS 201, 202 and 203 hurricane requirements, which matters on coastal government and institutional work.
19) What can I do about people hanging on the lever or kicking the door in a school corridor?
Two things on the ND platform. The lock itself holds against 3,100 in-lb of abusive lever torque and 100 hammer blows without granting access, and it is built without set screws or O-rings so the lever does not loosen and droop over 16 million cycles. Beyond that, ND offers Vandlgard models where the lever free-spins up and down when locked, so force applied to the lever never reaches the chassis. On an abuse-prone opening, specify the Vandlgard variant.
20) What is the difference between the ND81 and a Grade 1 classroom or entry lever from another brand?
Function is the difference, not grade. The ND81 is storeroom: outside lever permanently locked, key entry only, no way to leave it unlocked. If you need a teacher to lock or unlock the outside lever with a key from either side, that is classroom function, and ZenSupply carries the Dexter C1000 Grade 1 classroom and classroom security clutching levers for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors. If the door should be lockable but left open during business hours, the Dexter C1000 entry/office is the Grade 1 option there. 21) Can I get higher security than a standard 6-pin cylinder on this lock?
Yes. The ND platform accepts Primus XP cylinders, which are UL 437 listed, for high security locking with key control. Ordered as PD the ND81 comes with a conventional 6-pin cylinder in the Schlage C keyway, which is fine for general storage; step up to Primus where you need patented key control and drill and pick resistance. Multiple key systems are available across the family: open, patented and restricted.
22) Does a Grade 1 dummy lever match a Schlage ND81 on the inactive leaf of a pair?
A dummy trim is a pull only - no latch, no chassis, no key. The BEST 9K Series 1DT is a Grade 1 non-keyed heavy duty single dummy trim cylindrical lever, and the Accentra 455LN Augusta is a Grade 1 heavy duty single dummy cylindrical lever in the 5400 Series. Either can carry the same look on an inactive leaf, but the ND81 is a keyed storeroom lock with a 13-247 deadlatch on a 2-3/4 inch backset, so it is the active leaf that needs the ND81.
23) What is the difference between a Schlage ND81 and an asylum function cylindrical lock for a utility room?
An asylum or institution lock is keyed on both sides, so entry and exit both require a key. The Dexter C1000 asylum is a Grade 1 cylindrical lock in ANSI F87 asylum function for 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors, and the Arrow MK33-BD-CS is a Grade 2 heavy duty asylum lock with a ball knob and a conventional cylinder in the Schlage C keyway. The ND81 is single cylinder with the inside lever free, which is what most utility and storage rooms are required to have for egress.
24) Is a keypad or electronic lever an alternative to a Schlage ND81 for a storeroom with no key control?
They are different animals. The ND81 is a mechanical, non-electronic lock, keyed with two nickel silver keys per lock. Code-operated options include the Lockey 1150 heavy duty mechanical keypad lever set with double combination for doors 1-1/8 inch to 2 inch, the Delaney LP250 Grade 2 electronic keypad leverlock, and the Emtek Classic keypad leverset. A keypad removes the key from the workflow; the ND81 keeps the opening on the building's key system.
25) Can a residential grade lever be substituted for a Schlage ND81 in an apartment building storage room?
Grade 3 levers are a different service class. The Cal-Royal AUS00 is a Grade 3 entrance/office lever with a solid brass forged body for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, the Callan Artino is a Grade 3 entrance leverset, and the Kwikset 200BRNL Breton is a Grade 3 passage lever for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors. The ND81 is a commercial Grade 1 heavy duty lock in zinc and steel, non-handed, meeting ADA and ANSI/BHMA A156.2 Series 4000 Grade 1 - which is what a common-area storage door in a managed building is normally specified to.
26) What is the difference between a Schlage ND81 and a lock lever trim for an exit device?
Trim is not a lockset. The Corbin Russwin 585F715 is a Grade 1 lock lever for the ED8000 pushpad exit device and the CL3300 cylindrical lock series, for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors, and the Imperial USA ED-EL500HD is a heavy duty escutcheon lever trim in entry function for the ED-500 series. Those mount to an exit device and depend on it for latching. The ND81 is a complete cylindrical lockset with its own chassis, a 13-247 deadlatch, and a 10-025 ANSI strike.
27) Does a Yale or Accentra cylinder adapter let a Schlage keyway be used on non-Schlage hardware alongside a Schlage ND81?
The Accentra 107S is a Schlage cylinder adapter kit for Yale hardware, Grade 1, in apartment exit/public toilet function. It is the piece that brings Schlage-format cylinders onto that brand's chassis. On the ND81 side no adapter is needed: it is offered with a conventional 6-pin Schlage C keyway cylinder, Schlage FSIC prep less core, FSIC prep with construction core, and a less cylinder option, and the ND Series spring cage sets support Schlage plus eight competitive cylinder formats.
28) For a bathroom or bedroom door, is a Schlage ND81 the wrong function and what replaces it?
Yes, wrong function - a storeroom lock is key-operated from outside with no thumbturn. A privacy lock is what that opening takes: the Arrow MK02-TA is a privacy/bed/bath cylindrical lock with a Tudor knob, non-keyed, fire rated, for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors, the Hager 2540 is a Grade 2 privacy cylindrical lock with the Withnell lever, and the Kwikset 300BRNL Breton is a Grade 3 privacy lever for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors. Schlage's privacy function in the same series is the ND40, ANSI F76.
29) Is a Grade 2 medium duty lever enough for a stockroom door, or does it need the Schlage ND81?
Duty level is the split. The Falcon B101 and B511CP6D are Grade 2 medium duty cylindrical levers, and the BEST 7KC single dummy trim is Grade 2 medium duty. Heavy duty Grade 1 options in the set include the Falcon K101 and T101 and the BEST 9K 1DT dummy trim.
