ND30 - PATIO LOCK

Push button locking. Turning inside lever or closing door releases button, preventing a lock out. Inside lever always unlocked for immediate egress.

Schlage ND SERIES OVERVIEW

The Schlage ND Series offers a full breadth of commercial lock options with a suited combination of mechanical, electrified and electronic options. This overview covers common characteristics for the mechanical and electrified lock information.

Beyond grade 1 performance is the hallmark of the mechanical and electrified locks. ND Series locks are tested to withstand 3,100 in-lb. of abusive lever torque - more than 2 1/2 times the Grade 1 standard requirement. Offset lever pull testing up to 1,600 lbs. assures you of the lock's superb resistance against pry bar attacks. More than strong, ND Series is built to last and shows nearly zero droop or wobble after 16 million cycles.

All ND Series locks including electronic and ligature-resistant trim use the common cylindrical ANSI 161 door preparation making them easily interchangeable. They are ideal for all new construction and retrofit applications.

ND Series Mechanical Lock

The ND mechanical lock, along with being Schlage’s best selling mechanical lock, is the foundation for both the wired electrified and NDE wireless electronic lock. Not only did Schlage invent the cylindrical lock, but we continue to make it better with capabilities such as:

  • Unparalleled strength - the lock prevents access even when subjected to torque loads up to 3,100 in-lbs (2.6x BHMA1), withstands pry bar attacks of 1,600 lbs (8x BHMA requirements1), and withstands 100 hammer blows (20x BHMA requirements1, 2)
  • Exceptional durability - cycle tested to over 16M cycles (16x BHMA requirements1) with near zero droop or wobble - without the use of set screws or O-rings
  • Improved feel - improved strength and durability are more than numbers, you can actually feel it in the lock
  • Improved installation - installation is even easier than before (and withoutany set screws or O-rings)

FEATURES & BENEFITS

Security

  • Significantly exceeds ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 requirements

Schlage ND30-RHO-626 XN12-007 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does the Schlage ND30 patio function actually do on a door?
The ND30 is a patio lock, ANSI F77. You lock it with a push button on the inside. Turning the inside lever, or simply closing the door, releases the button, so nobody gets locked out on the wrong side. The inside lever is always free for immediate egress. There is no key and no outside operation of the latch, so the outside is a blank plate, not a lever with a keyway. Use it where one side needs to be secured from within and no outside access is wanted at all: patio doors, some mechanical rooms, doors where a locked-out occupant is the failure mode you are avoiding.
2) Is the Schlage ND30 the same thing as a privacy lock for a bathroom?
Not quite, and the difference matters. The ND30 patio function has a push button inside that releases when you turn the inside lever or close the door, and there is no outside trim to operate or unlock it. A privacy lock in the ND family is the ND40 (ANSI F76), which is what you want on a bathroom or bedroom where you need an emergency release from the corridor side. If someone needs to get in from outside, the ND30 is the wrong function. For a lighter-duty privacy lever from another brand, ZenSupply carries the Hager 2540 with the Withnell lever and the Kwikset 300BRNL Breton, both Grade 2 and Grade 3 respectively.
3) Do I have to order the Schlage ND30 handed for a left or right door?
No handing to specify. The ND30 is non-handed, so the same lock goes on a left or right swing without reversing anything in the field. That is one less line item to get wrong when you are ordering a run of doors.
4) Will a Schlage ND30 drop into the prep from the old cylindrical lock I am replacing?
If the existing door is prepped for a standard cylindrical lock, yes. All ND Series locks, including the electronic and ligature-resistant trims, use the common ANSI 161 cylindrical door preparation, which is why they interchange freely across the series and swap into existing openings. The line also meets Federal FF-H-106C Series 161. What you should verify on the door is the backset the existing prep was cut to and the strike cutout in the frame.
5) What strike comes with the Schlage ND30 and will it fit my existing frame cutout?
The standard strike is the 10-025: an ANSI strike, no box, 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inches with a 1-3/16 inch lip length. If your frame already carries an ANSI 4-7/8 inch strike prep, that is a direct match. A frame cut for a small T-strike or a round-corner residential strike is not, and you will be filling and re-prepping or ordering a different strike. Lip length is the other thing to check: 1-3/16 inches suits a typical flush frame, and a deeper reveal or applied stop wants a longer lip.
6) Does the Schlage ND30 meet ADA and accessibility requirements for a public building?
Yes on both counts for the ND Series: it meets ADA requirements and complies with ICC A117.1 Accessible and Usable Buildings and Facilities. Lever operation is what gets you there, since it needs no tight grasping or twisting. For California fire code, the levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch or less comply, and that list is Rhodes, Sparta, Tubular, Omega, Longitude and Boardwalk, all of which are lever choices here. The line also meets the Buy American Act, which matters on federally funded work.
7) What is the closest Grade 1 non-keyed cylindrical lever lock to the Schlage ND30 patio lock?
The ND30 is a Grade 1 non-keyed cylindrical leverset with a patio function - push button locking on the inside, with the inside lever always unlocked for immediate egress. Among Grade 1 non-keyed cylindrical lever locks, the Falcon K101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty passage cylindrical lock with non-handed levers, and the Falcon T101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty cylindrical passage lever lock. Both are passage function, meaning neither locks at all - the levers are always free from both sides. If the opening needs a lock that secures from one side without a key, the ND30 patio function is the one that does that; the K101 and T101 match the grade but not the locking behavior.
8) Can a privacy lock be used instead of a patio lock on a bathroom or bedroom door?
The ND30 is a patio function lock - push button locking, and turning the inside lever or closing the door releases the button so the room cannot lock someone out. For bed and bath openings specified as privacy function, the Hager 2540 is a Grade 2 privacy cylindrical lock with a Withnell lever, the Kwikset 300BRNL Breton is a Grade 3 privacy lever set for door thicknesses of 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, and the Arrow MK02-TA is a privacy cylindrical lock with a Tudor knob and a fire rating. Those are knob or lever privacy sets rather than the patio function; the difference is in how the button releases, so match the function the drawing or the existing door calls out.
9) What should be specified instead of the ND30 when the door needs to be locked and unlocked with a key?
The ND30 is non-keyed - it locks by push button only, with no cylinder. For keyed openings, the Dexter C1000 Series entry/office is a Grade 1 keyed clutching cylindrical lever lock for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, the Dexter C1000 classroom is a Grade 1 keyed clutching classroom lever lock, and the Cal-Royal AG05 is a Grade 2 storeroom lever lockset with a deadlocking latchbolt for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch. Keyed functions differ in who can lock the door and whether the outside lever stays locked, so pick by function, not just by the presence of a cylinder.
10) What do I have to specify when ordering a Schlage ND30?
Three things. Lever design, from nine options: Athens, Boardwalk, Broadway, Latitude, Longitude, Omega, Rhodes, Sparta and Tubular. Finish, from ten: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 626AM satin chrome antimicrobial and 643E aged bronze. And the function itself is specified per XN12-007, which is the ND30 patio configuration. No keyway, keying or handing to call out, since the lock is non-keyed and non-handed.
11) Is a Grade 1 lock like the ND30 worth it over a Grade 2 lever on interior doors?
Depends on the traffic. The ND Series is tested and certified under ANSI/BHMA A156.2 Series 4000, Grade 1, and goes well past the minimum: it holds against 3,100 in-lb of abusive lever torque, 1,600 lbs of offset lever pull, and shows near zero droop or wobble after 16 million cycles without set screws or O-rings. On a school corridor, a dorm, or anything the public leans on, that is the difference between a lock you replace and one you forget about. For a low-traffic interior door where budget rules, ZenSupply carries Grade 2 cylindrical levers such as the Falcon B101 and the Hager 2510, and Grade 3 options like the Kwikset 200BRNL Breton.
12) I need the ND30 to match the other Schlage levers already in my building. Will it?
It will, and that is the usual reason people stay in the family. The ND Series is suited to Schlage ALX Series Grade 2 locks, so a building that mixed heavy-duty and medium-duty openings still reads as one hardware package, and it suites with Von Duprin exit devices and other Schlage products. Match on lever design and finish code and the ND30 patio door will look identical to the classroom and storeroom functions down the hall.
13) Can I get a Schlage ND30 with a key override or an electric option?
No. The ND30 is a non-keyed mechanical function with a blank outside plate and no electronics, so there is no cylinder to key and nothing to wire. If you need key access, move to a keyed ND function: ND50 entrance/office (F82), ND53 entrance (F109), ND70 classroom (F84) or ND80 storeroom (F86). If you need the door controlled electrically, the ND80 storeroom is also offered as an electrified function, and the electrified ND locks auto-detect 12/24V DC with a 0.4 amp maximum draw and 0.1 amp holding current.
14) Is there a Grade 1 non-keyed lever from another brand if the Schlage ND30 is not the function I need?
Several, depending on what the door has to do. For a Grade 1 non-keyed passage lever, ZenSupply carries the Falcon K101, which lists a 1-3/8 to 2-1/4 inch door thickness range and a fire rating, the Falcon T101 heavy-duty passage lever, and the Design Hardware X75 for 1-3/4 inch doors. For a vandal-resistant Grade 1 passage or closet lever, the Corbin Russwin CL3110 covers 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors and is fire rated. None of those latch-lock from the inside the way the ND30 patio function does, so they are alternatives only if what you actually need is free passage rather than push-button locking.
15) What Grade 2 cylindrical lever lock can go on lower-traffic doors when Grade 1 is not required?
The ND30 is a Grade 1 heavy duty cylindrical leverset. Where the spec allows Grade 2, the Accentra 5301LN Augusta is a Grade 2 cylindrical lever lock in passage function, the Falcon B101 is a Grade 2 medium duty cylindrical passage lever lock with a non-handed design, and the Hager 2510 is a Grade 2 passage cylindrical lever lock with the Withnell design for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch thick. All three are passage function rather than patio, so they do not lock; choose on the function the opening needs first, then the grade.
16) Which cylindrical lever lock should be used on the inactive leaf or a false door where the ND30 would be wasted?
The ND30 is a working patio lock with push button locking and a live inside lever. On an inactive leaf or a pull-only door, a dummy trim does the job instead: the BEST 9K Series 1DT is a Grade 1 heavy duty single dummy trim cylindrical lever lock, the BEST 7KC Series 1DT is a Grade 2 medium duty single dummy trim lever, and the Accentra 455LN Augusta is a Grade 1 heavy duty single dummy cylindrical lever lock. Dummy trim has no latch and no locking - it is surface trim only, so it cannot substitute anywhere the door must latch.
17) Is there a Grade 1 cylindrical lever lock rated for vandal resistance as an alternative to the ND30?
The ND30 is a Grade 1 cylindrical leverset in a zinc and steel body. Where abuse is the driving concern on a non-locking opening, the Corbin Russwin CL3110 is a Grade 1 vandal resistant cylindrical lever lock in passage/closet function, fire rated, for doors 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch thick. It is a passage function with no locking, so it suits corridor and closet doors rather than a room that has to secure from the inside the way the ND30 patio function does.
18) Do keypad or electronic leversets do the same job as an ND30 patio lock?
They do not. The ND30 is a non-electronic mechanical lock that locks with a push button from the inside. The Lockey 1150 is a heavy duty mechanical keypad lever set with a double combination for doors 1-1/8 inch to 2 inch, the Delaney LP250 is a Grade 2 electronic keypad leverlock, and the Emtek Classic keypad leverset is a keypad unit as well. Those control entry by code from the outside; the ND30 controls it by a button on the inside with the inside lever always free for egress. They answer different problems on the door.
19) Which lock handles an asylum or utility opening that the ND30 patio function cannot?
The ND30 patio function releases its button when the inside lever is turned or the door is closed, which is exactly what you do not want on a utility or institutional opening that must stay secured from both sides. For those, the Dexter C1000 Series asylum lock is Grade 1 in asylum/institution/utility function for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch, and the Arrow MK33-BD-CS is a heavy duty asylum function cylindrical lock with a ball knob and a conventional cylinder in the Schlage C keyway.
20) When an opening needs an electrified lever instead of a mechanical one, what takes the place of the ND30?
The ND30 is a mechanical, non-electronic lock. For access control tie-in, the Corbin Russwin CL33903 is a Grade 1 fail safe electrified cylindrical lever lock running 12VAC/DC for doors 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch, offered with the NZ lever and D rose. Fail safe unlocks on loss of power, so confirm that behavior is what the egress and life safety plan calls for before substituting it for a button-locked patio function.
21) What is the Schlage ND30 lock body made of, and does it hold up in a hospital or school?
Zinc and steel construction, rated heavy duty and built for commercial use. The abuse numbers are the ones that matter in those buildings: no access at 3,100 in-lb of locked lever torque, no access at 1,600 lbs of offset lever pull against pry bar attack, and 100 hammer blows without gaining access. For infection-control settings, the 626AM satin chrome antimicrobial finish is one of the ten finish choices.
22) Does the ND30 patio lock work on an exterior door exposed to hurricane conditions?
The ND Series complies with the Florida Building Code under ASTM E330, E1886 and E1996, and with Miami Dade TAS 201, 202 and 203 for hurricanes. Worth remembering what the ND30 does, though: it locks only from the inside and has no outside operation, so on an exterior opening it suits a door secured from within rather than one anyone needs to enter through.
23) I need a dummy lever to match a Schlage ND30 on the inactive leaf of a pair. What are my options?
The ND30 is an operating patio lock, not a dummy, so the inactive leaf needs a separate trim. ZenSupply carries the BEST 9K Series 1DT single dummy cylindrical lever trim in Grade 1 heavy duty, and the BEST 7KC Series single dummy in Grade 2 medium duty. Match your traffic level rather than defaulting to the cheaper one, since a dummy lever on a pair takes the same abuse the active leaf does.
24) Are there residential-style levers that match an ND30 opening in a lighter-duty building?
The ND30 is a commercial heavy duty leverset. On residential and light commercial doors, the Kwikset 200BRNL Breton is a Grade 3 passage lever set for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, the Callan Asheville is a Grade 3 passage leverset in satin nickel, and the Cal-Royal AUS00 is a Grade 3 entrance/office lever with a solid brass forged body for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch. None of these is a patio function, so where a bedroom or patio door must lock from the inside without a key, they are not a swap for the ND30.
