1) What does the Schlage ND45 time out function actually do on a detention or behavioral health door?
Two sides, two behaviors. From the caretaker side, pushing and holding the button locks the inside lever until it's released, and the caretaker's lever always retracts the latch. From the detention side, the lever retracts the latch unless the outside button is being held down. So staff control access moment to moment by hand rather than by key, and the moment they let go the room returns to free egress from the inside.
2) Does the ND45 time out lock need a key or a cylinder?
No cylinder, no key. The ND45 with XN12-317 is a non-keyed lock, controlled entirely by the pushbutton on the caretaker side. That means nothing to add to your key system and nothing to key up on install, but it also means there is no key override, so anyone who needs to hold the room locked has to be standing at the door with a hand on the button.
3) Will the Schlage ND45 drop into the existing prep if I'm replacing another cylindrical lockset?
It uses the standard ANSI 161 cylindrical door preparation, the same prep every ND Series lock shares, which is why Schlage calls them interchangeable across the series and suitable for retrofit as well as new construction. If the door already has a 161 prep bored for a cylindrical lock, the chassis goes in the same hole. 5) Do I need to specify handing when I order a Schlage ND45 lever lock?

13) If I standardize on Schlage ND for a building, will the ND45 match the other doors and the exit devices?
