Beyond grade 1 performance is the hallmark of the mechanical and electrified locks. ND Series locks are tested to withstand 3,100 in-lb. of abusive lever torque - more than 2 1/2 times the Grade 1 standard requirement. Schlage ND72-RHO-626-XN12-003 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Schlage ND72 fit my door and existing lock prep?
It is built for 1-3/4 inch doors and uses the common cylindrical ANSI 161 bore, the same prep all ND Series locks share, so it drops into an existing 161 prep on new construction or a retrofit. Backset is 2-3/4 inches with the standard 13-247 deadlatch, and the faceplate is a 1-1/8 x 2-1/4 inch square corner. The lock is non-handed, so you do not specify hand when ordering.
2) Will the ND72 latch into the strike that is already in my frame?
The lock ships with the 10-025 ANSI strike, 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inches with a 1-3/16 inch lip and no box. If your frame already has an ANSI strike cut of that size, the new lock lines up with it at the 2-3/4 inch backset. If your existing strike is a smaller T-strike or a round-corner residential strike, the frame will need to be prepped for ANSI or the supplied strike will not sit flush. Check your lip length too: 1-3/16 inch is measured for a standard jamb return, and a deep return or an applied stop needs a longer lip.
3) What is Vandlgard on a Schlage lever lock and where does it matter?
Vandlgard means the outside lever free-spins up and down when the lock is secured instead of resisting. Force applied to a locked lever goes nowhere near the chassis, so the lock survives being hung on or kicked. It is the trim to specify on school corridors, stairwells, dorms, public restrooms, and any opening where the lever gets abused. On the ND72 the Vandlgard behavior is specified per XN12-003.
4) What do I have to specify when ordering a Schlage ND72 lock?
Four choices. Cylinder type: P conventional 6-pin in the Schlage C keyway (standard), L less cylinder, or J less FSIC cylinder if you are supplying your own or building an interchangeable core system. Keying: KD keyed different is standard, KA keyed alike if a group of locks should share one key, or none on the less-cylinder options. Then lever design, nine of them (Athens, Boardwalk, Broadway, Latitude, Longitude, Omega, Rhodes, Sparta, Tubular), and finish. Keyed locks come with two nickel silver cut keys.
5) Is the Schlage ND72 rated for a fire door?
UL and cUL listed for 3 hour A label single fire doors up to 4'0" x 10'0", and pair doors at 3 hour up to 8'0" x 8'0" with the 3/4 inch latch option. Pair doors at 8'0" x 10'0" carry a 90 minute rating, again with the 3/4 inch latch. Note the pair-door ratings depend on the 3/4 inch latch, not the standard latch.
6) Does the ND72 meet ADA and accessibility code for a public building?
The ND Series meets ADA requirements and complies with ICC A117.1 for accessible and usable buildings. It also meets the Buy American Act, which matters on federal and many state-funded jobs, and Federal spec FF-H-106C Series 161. For California, levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch or less comply with the CA fire code, and that covers the Rhodes, Sparta, Tubular, Omega, Longitude and Boardwalk designs.
7) Can I get Schlage ND72 locks keyed alike with the rest of my building?
Yes. Order KA keyed alike and a group of locks works off one key; KD keyed different is the default if each opening needs its own. The standard cylinder is a conventional 6-pin in the Schlage C keyway, so it keys into an existing Schlage C system. If you run interchangeable cores, order J less FSIC cylinder and drop your own cores in, or L less cylinder to supply any cylinder. Remember the ND72 takes a cylinder on both sides, so a communicating opening consumes two cylinders per door, not one.
8) Should I use a communicating lock or a classroom or storeroom lock?
Depends on who needs to control the door. Communicating (ND72) gives each side its own key control of its own lever, for a door between two independently occupied spaces. If one authority controls the door, pick differently: ND70 classroom (ANSI F84) lets a key lock or unlock the outside lever, ND80 storeroom (ANSI F86) keeps the outside lever always locked with key entry only, ND50 entrance/office (F82) allows pushbutton locking. Non-keyed doors take ND10 passage or ND40 privacy. All of them share the same ANSI 161 prep, so switching function later does not mean re-prepping the door.
9) For a suite door between two tenant spaces, is an entry or office lever an acceptable substitute for the ND72?
They are not equivalent. An entry or office function such as the Dexter C1000 Grade 1 entry/office clutching keyed lever for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors, or the Hager 2525 Grade 2 commercial entry lock, is keyed from the outside with a free inside lever - one party controls the door. The ND72 with XN12-003 is a double cylinder communicating lock where the key in either lever locks and unlocks that lever, so each of the two rooms can secure itself independently. On a shared door between two occupancies where neither side should hold the other's access, that difference is the whole point of the function.
10) What is the closest Grade 1 cylindrical lever alternative to the Schlage ND72 for a vandal-prone opening?
The Schlage ND72 with XN12-003 is a Grade 1 cylindrical lever lock with Schlage Vandlgard trim, where the lever freely rotates when locked so force on the lever does not reach the chassis. On the vandal-resistance angle the closest peer is the Corbin Russwin CL3110, a Grade 1 vandal resistant cylindrical lever lock in the CL3100 Series. The difference that decides the order is function: the ND72 is a keyed communicating lock with a cylinder in each lever, while the CL3110 is a non-keyed passage/closet lock with no cylinder at all. If the opening needs to lock, the CL3110 does not cover it regardless of its vandal resistance.
11) Is a classroom or storeroom lever the same thing as the ND72 communicating lock?
No. The ND72 with XN12-003 is a communicating function: a key in either lever locks and unlocks that lever, and both levers are clutching, so the two sides operate independently. A classroom lock such as the Dexter C1000 Grade 1 classroom clutching keyed lever, or the Cal-Royal AG03 classroom lever in the AG Series, is keyed from the outside to control the outside lever only, with the inside lever always free. A storeroom lock such as the Hager 2580 keeps the outside lever locked at all times. Those are one-sided control; the communicating function is the one to specify when either side must be able to secure itself against the other, as between two connecting rooms.
12) For a healthcare or behavioral facility, how does the ND72 compare with an asylum function lever?
Both put a cylinder on each side, but they behave differently. The ND72 with XN12-003 is a communicating lock where the key in either lever locks and unlocks its own lever, and the levers are clutching, so a locked lever spins free. An asylum function such as the Dexter C1000 Grade 1 asylum lock for 1-3/8 to 2 inch doors, or the Arrow MK33-BD-CS heavy duty asylum lock with a conventional Schlage C keyway cylinder, requires a key to retract the latch from either side at all times, with no free egress. Life safety code for the opening decides which is permitted, since the asylum function keys both sides against exit.
13) Can a Schlage C keyway lock from another brand be keyed into the same system as the ND72?
The ND72 with XN12-003 uses S123 cylinders and keyways and ships standard with a conventional 6-pin Schlage C keyway cylinder. Other brands in the set are built on the same keyway: the Cal-Royal AG00 entrance lever uses a 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different with a 2-3/8 inch backset, and the Arrow MK33-BD-CS asylum lock takes a conventional Schlage C keyway cylinder. A locksmith keying a building to Schlage C can bring those onto the same key system. For Yale and Accentra hardware, the Accentra 107S is a Schlage cylinder adapter kit made for that purpose.
14) The ND72 latch is a 2-3/4 inch backset - what if the existing door is bored 2-3/8?
The ND72 with XN12-003 ships with the 13-247 deadlatch at a 2-3/4 inch backset with a 1-1/8 by 2-1/4 inch square corner faceplate, on a 1-3/4 inch door. Where the existing bore is 2-3/8 inch and cannot be redrilled, the Cal-Royal AG00 entrance lever is built on a 2-3/8 inch backset, and the Cal-Royal AG03 classroom lever in the AG Series runs 2-3/4 inch. Measure from the door edge to the center of the bore before ordering, because backset is a hole-position match and not something the trim adjusts for.
15) Is the Schlage ND72 tough enough for a school or high traffic commercial corridor?
Certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.2 Series 4000 Grade 1, and the ND chassis is tested well past that floor: 3,100 in-lb of abusive locked lever torque, 1,600 lbs of offset lever pull for pry bar resistance, 100 vertical lever impacts, and 16 million cycles with near zero droop and no set screws or O-rings holding it together. Zinc and steel construction, heavy duty. Those beyond-Grade-1 numbers hold with Schlage cylinders (conventional, FSIC or SFIC); with a non-Schlage cylinder it still exceeds Grade 1 but performance may be lower.
16) What finishes does the Schlage ND72 come in, and is there an option for a healthcare door?
Ten finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 626AM satin chrome antimicrobial, and 643E aged bronze. For patient rooms, clinics, and anywhere infection control drives the spec, 626AM is the antimicrobial version of the standard satin chrome, so it matches 626 hardware already installed elsewhere in the building.
17) Will Schlage ND levers match the exit devices and other hardware already in my building?
The ND Series suites with Von Duprin exit devices and other Schlage products, and it is designed to coordinate with Schlage ALX Series Grade 2 locks, so you can run ND on the heavy-traffic openings and ALX on the lighter interior ones and keep one lever look across the building. Nine lever designs and four rose designs to match to what is already hung.
18) What is a Grade 1 alternative to the Schlage ND if I need vandal resistant cylindrical lever trim from another brand?
The Corbin Russwin CL3100 Series is the closest cross-brand match we carry for vandal resistant Grade 1 cylindrical lever locks. The CL3110 is the passage version, Grade 1, fire rated, listed for 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors. Note the difference in door range: the ND is a 1-3/4 inch device, while the CL3100 covers up to 2 inches, so on a thick door the Corbin Russwin is the one that fits. The CL3110 is passage function though, so it is not a swap for the ND72's keyed communicating function.
19) I need a Grade 1 lever lock for a door thicker than 1-3/4 inches. What else do you carry?
The ND72 is built for 1-3/4 inch doors, so on a thicker leaf look at the Falcon K Series. The K101 is Grade 1, heavy duty, fire rated and covers 1-3/8 to 2-1/4 inches, the widest range we hold in a Grade 1 cylindrical lever. Dexter C1000 Series Grade 1 also spans 1-3/8 to 2 inches in the asylum function. Both are single-function locks, not communicating, so match the function to the opening before you order.
20) Is a Grade 2 lever lock good enough instead of the Schlage ND, or do I need Grade 1?
For a light interior office or closet door, Grade 2 is often enough and we carry plenty: Hager 2525 entry and 2580 storeroom (Grade 2, 1-3/8 to 2 inch), Falcon B Series, Cal-Royal AG05 storeroom. Where the ND earns Grade 1 is abuse: 3,100 in-lb of locked lever torque and 1,600 lbs of offset pull, on a chassis cycle tested to 16 million. On a school corridor, a stairwell, a public restroom, or any opening where the lever gets used hundreds of times a day, that is the difference between a lock that lasts and a callback.
21) Can I use my existing non-Schlage cylinders in a Schlage ND lock?
Yes. Three spring cage sets cover all Schlage cylinder formats plus eight competitive formats, so an existing keyway from another manufacturer can carry over. Order the L less cylinder option and fit your own. One caveat worth knowing: the beyond-Grade-1 numbers Schlage publishes apply with Schlage cylinders (conventional, FSIC and SFIC). With a competitive cylinder the lock still exceeds BHMA Grade 1, but performance may be below the Schlage-cylinder figures. If you want maximum security, Primus XP UL 437 listed cylinders are the top of the range.
22) The ND72 communicating function is more lock than the door needs - what Grade 1 lever handles a door that only has to latch?
The ND72 with XN12-003 is a double cylinder communicating lock, keyed on both sides. Where the opening only needs to latch and swing, Grade 1 non-keyed levers that cover it include the Falcon K101, a Grade 1 heavy duty passage cylindrical lock with non-handed levers and a fire rating, and the Falcon T101, a Grade 1 heavy duty cylindrical passage lever with Pressure Release Technology. The Design Hardware X75 is also a Grade 1 passage lever lockset for 1-3/4 inch doors. None of these accept a key, so a door that ever has to be secured from either side stays on the ND72.
23) Which Grade 2 lever locks are worth considering instead of the Schlage ND72 on lighter traffic doors?
The ND72 with XN12-003 is a heavy duty Grade 1 lock. On lower-traffic openings, Grade 2 cylindrical levers in the set include the Hager 2580 storeroom lock with Withnell lever for 1-3/8 to 2 inch doors, the Cal-Royal AG05 Grade 2 storeroom lever with deadlocking latchbolt for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Falcon B511CP6D Grade 2 medium duty entry/office lever. All three are single cylinder functions - keyed from one side only - so none of them reproduce the ND72's key-in-either-lever operation.
24) Does an electrified or keypad lever do what the ND72 communicating lock does?
No, they solve a different problem. The ND72 with XN12-003 is a non-electronic mechanical lock with a cylinder in each lever, so both sides are controlled by key. The Corbin Russwin CL33903 is a Grade 1 fail safe electrified cylindrical lever for 12VAC/DC and 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors, controlled by an access system with power run to the door. The Delaney LP250 is a Grade 2 electronic keypad leverlock, credential-free but code-based on one side. Neither gives each side independent key control of its own lever, and both add either wiring or code management the ND72 does not carry.
25) Will a residential-grade lever from a big-box brand hold up where an ND72 is specified?
The ND72 with XN12-003 is a commercial Grade 1 heavy duty lock in zinc and steel. Grade 3 levers such as the Kwikset 200BRNL Breton passage set for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors, the Kwikset 300BRNL Breton privacy set, the Cal-Royal AUS00 Grade 3 entrance/office lever with a solid brass forged body, and the Callan Artino Grade 3 entrance leverset sit at the residential end of the scale and none of them are keyed on both sides. Where a specification or facility standard calls for Grade 1, the grade itself is the deciding line.
26) Which alternatives to the ND72 cover doors thicker than 1-3/4 inch?
The ND72 with XN12-003 is furnished for a 1-3/4 inch door. On a thicker leaf, peers with a published range above that include the Falcon K101 Grade 1 passage lock at 1-3/8 to 2-1/4 inch, the Dexter C1000 asylum lock at 1-3/8 to 2 inch, the Corbin Russwin CL3110 Grade 1 vandal resistant passage lock at 1-3/4 to 2 inch, and the Hager 2510 Grade 2 passage lever at 1-3/8 to 2 inch. Of those only the Dexter C1000 asylum is keyed on both sides; the others are passage functions with no cylinder.
27) Does the Schlage ND72 need power or wiring?
No. The ND72 communicating lock is fully mechanical, no wiring, no power supply, no door loop. If you need an electrified cylindrical lever on the same opening, the ND Series carries four electrified functions that auto-detect 12/24V DC and draw a maximum of 0.4 amps with 0.1 amps holding, and they use the same ANSI 161 prep, so a mechanical door can be converted later without re-cutting the door.
