Schlage ND SERIES OVERVIEW

The Schlage ND Series offers a full breadth of commercial lock options with a suited combination of mechanical, electrified and electronic options. This overview covers common characteristics for the mechanical and electrified lock information.

Beyond grade 1 performance is the hallmark of the mechanical and electrified locks. ND Series locks are tested to withstand 3,100 in-lb. of abusive lever torque - more than 2 1/2 times the Grade 1 standard requirement. Offset lever pull testing up to 1,600 lbs. assures you of the lock's superb resistance against pry bar attacks. More than strong, ND Series is built to last and shows nearly zero droop or wobble after 16 million cycles.

All ND Series locks including electronic and ligature-resistant trim use the common cylindrical ANSI 161 door preparation making them easily interchangeable. They are ideal for all new construction and retrofit applications.

ND Series Mechanical Lock

The ND mechanical lock, along with being Schlage’s best selling mechanical lock, is the foundation for both the wired electrified and NDE wireless electronic lock. Not only did Schlage invent the cylindrical lock, but they continue to make it better with capabilities such as:

  • Unparalleled strength - the lock prevents access even when subjected to torque loads up to 3,100 in-lbs (2.6x BHMA1), withstands pry bar attacks of 1,600 lbs (8x BHMA requirements1), and withstands 100 hammer blows (20x BHMA requirements1, 2)
  • Exceptional durability - cycle tested to over 16M cycles (16x BHMA requirements1) with near zero droop or wobble - without the use of set screws or O-rings
  • Improved feel - improved strength and durability are more than numbers, you can actually feel it in the lock
  • Improved installation - installation is even easier than before (and withoutany set screws or O-rings)

Schlage ND94PD-RHO-626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Schlage ND94 classroom lock fit a 1-3/4 inch door, and what door prep does it need?
Yes, and 1-3/4 inches is the thickness the ND94 is built for. It uses the common cylindrical ANSI 161 door preparation shared across the whole ND Series, so it drops into an opening already bored for a cylindrical lockset. The standard latch is the 13-247 deadlatch on a 2-3/4 inch backset with a 1-1/8 x 2-1/4 inch square corner faceplate. Worth checking the bored backset first: 2-3/8 and 2-3/4 inches are the two backsets you find in the field, and a door bored at 2-3/8 will not line up with the 2-3/4 inch latch.
2) Does the Schlage ND94 come with a strike, and will it work with the strike cutout already in my frame?
A coordinating latch and strike ship with the lock. The strike is the 10-025, ANSI format, 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inches with a 1-3/16 inch lip and no box. An ANSI strike prep in the frame is that same 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 cutout, so the new strike lands on it. A frame cut for a small T strike or a 2-3/4 inch square strike needs the opening enlarged. Lip length is the other thing to look at: 1-3/16 inches suits a normal frame reveal, and a deep reveal or applied stop wants a longer lip.
3) How does the classroom function on the Schlage ND94 actually work day to day?
The key in the outside cylinder disengages and unlocks the outside lever; the inside lever is always free, so anyone in the room gets out without a key or a thumbturn. That is ANSI/BHMA F84. It is single cylinder, keyed one side only, which means the teacher steps into the corridor to lock the door. There is no inside locking on this function.
4) Can a teacher lock a Schlage ND94 from inside the classroom during a lockdown?
No. Locking it takes the key on the corridor side, and the inside lever stays unlocked at all times for egress. If the spec calls for securing the door from inside the room, that is a classroom security function, keyed on both sides, and the Dexter C1000 Series Classroom Security lever is a Grade 1 cylindrical option for it. Buying a standard classroom function against a lockdown requirement is the most common mistake made on this function.
5) What is the difference between the P, J and L cylinder options on the Schlage ND94?
P is the standard build: a conventional 6-pin cylinder in the Schlage C keyway, supplied keyed different with two nickel silver cut keys. J is less FSIC cylinder, for a site running Schlage full size interchangeable core. L is less cylinder outright, for anyone supplying their own or working a restricted keyway. Order J or L and no cylinder and no keys come in the box, so the core has to arrive from your key system. The chassis uses three spring cage sets that cover all Schlage formats plus eight competitive cylinder formats.
6) Do I have to specify handing when I order a Schlage ND94 lever lock?
No handing to call out. The ND94 is non-handed, and the same lever, rose and finish go on both faces of the door. For a facility standardising across many openings, that means one part number covers left and right hand doors instead of splitting the order.
7) What does Vandlgard do on the Schlage ND94, and does it hold up on a high abuse opening?
Vandlgard trim lets the outside lever spin freely up and down while the lock is locked, so force put on the lever never reaches the chassis. On a corridor door people hang off, that is what keeps the lock alive. Underneath it, the ND chassis is built past Grade 1: no access at 3,100 in-lb of abusive lever torque, no access at 1,600 lbs of offset lever pull against a pry bar, and near zero droop or wobble after 16 million cycles with no set screws or O-rings holding it together. Zinc and steel construction, heavy duty.
8) Which ND94 lever styles meet the California fire code lever return requirement?
Levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch or less comply, and on the ND Series that is Rhodes, Sparta, Tubular, Omega, Longitude and Boardwalk. Athens, Latitude and Broadway are offered too, so on a California job specify from the first six. Accessibility is not affected by lever choice: the lock meets ADA requirements and complies with ICC A117.1 for accessible and usable buildings.
9) Will the Schlage ND94 match the Von Duprin exit devices and other Schlage hardware already in my building?
The ND Series suites with Von Duprin exit devices and other Schlage products, and it is trim matched to the Schlage ALX Series Grade 2 locks, so a building can run ND on the heavy traffic openings and ALX on the lighter ones with the same lever look. Finishes cover 626 satin chrome, 625 bright chrome, 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 643E aged bronze and 626AM satin chrome antimicrobial.
10) Is there a Grade 2 classroom lever that still runs on the Schlage C keyway?
The Cal-Royal AG03 classroom lever is a Grade 2 cylindrical lock with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway cylinder, keyed different, on the same 2-3/4 inch backset as the ND94, in 626 satin chrome. Same key blank, same backset, lighter chassis. Grade 2 suits an interior or light traffic door. Where the opening sees daily abuse, the Grade 1 ND94 with Vandlgard trim is the one that survives it, and the ND94 P cylinder is the same conventional 6-pin Schlage C keyway, so both sit in one key system.
11) The Corbin Russwin CL3110 is described as vandal resistant. Is it a substitute for the Schlage ND94?
Not on a door that has to lock. The CL3110 is a Grade 1 vandal resistant cylindrical lever, but it is a passage/closet function, so it never locks at all. The ND94 is keyed. Where the CL3110 earns its place is thickness: it takes 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors, and the ND94 is 1-3/4 only. Sensible split is CL3110 on the unlocked openings, ND94 wherever the key matters.
12) Which other Grade 1 cylindrical lever locks are built in the classroom function?
The Dexter C1000 Series classroom lock is a Grade 1 cylindrical lever in the classroom function, keyed, with a clutching lever, listed for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch. The Schlage ND94 is also a Grade 1 keyed cylindrical classroom lever, carries the ANSI/BHMA F84 classroom designation, and is non-handed. Trim behavior is where the two diverge: the ND94 uses Schlage Vandlgard trim, where the outside lever rotates freely up and down when the lock is secured so force is not carried into the chassis, while the Dexter C1000 classroom lock uses a clutching lever. Confirm door thickness either way, since the ND94 is built for a 1-3/4 inch door.
13) What is the difference between a classroom function lock like the ND94 and a classroom security function lock?
They are two separate function designations and have to be called out by name on the door schedule. The Schlage ND94 is the classroom function, ANSI/BHMA F84: outside lever disengaged and unlocked by key, inside lever always unlocked for immediate egress. Dexter builds its C1000 Series in a distinct classroom security function, Grade 1, keyed, with a clutching lever, for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, alongside the plain classroom version of the same C1000 chassis. Both arrive as Grade 1 cylindrical lever sets, so the function code is what tells them apart on a submittal.
14) Is there a Grade 2 classroom lever that pins to the same Schlage C key as the ND94?
The Cal Royal AG03 is a Grade 2 classroom lever with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different, a 2-3/4 inch backset, and a 626 satin chrome finish. The ND94's standard cylinder option is a conventional 6-pin in the Schlage C keyway, and its standard 13-247 deadlatch is a 2-3/4 inch backset, so the two share a key blank and the same backset dimension. The separation is duty rating and trim: the ND94 is Grade 1, heavy duty, tested and certified under ANSI/BHMA A156.2 Series 4000, and carries Vandlgard trim, while the AG03 is a Grade 2 lever. 626 satin chrome is one of the ND94 finishes as well, so a mixed order can still match visually.
15) A supplier offered the Corbin Russwin CL3110 vandal resistant lever against a Schlage Vandlgard lock. Are those the same thing?
Both address abuse at the lever, but they cover different openings. The Corbin Russwin CL3110 is a Grade 1 vandal resistant cylindrical lever in the passage/closet function, fire rated, for doors 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch. The Schlage ND94 is keyed - single cylinder, classroom function, two nickel silver cut keys supplied per lock - and its Vandlgard trim lets the outside lever rotate freely up and down when the lock is secured. If the door schedule calls for a passage opening, the CL3110 answers it; if it calls for a keyed classroom opening, the function does not line up.
16) The opening needs to stay secured with the key giving entry. Is a classroom lock the right function to order?
That is the storeroom function rather than the classroom function. The ND94 is the classroom function, ANSI/BHMA F84, where the outside lever is disengaged and unlocked by key and the inside lever is always unlocked for immediate egress. Cross-brand storeroom levers in the same cylindrical format include the Cal-Royal AG05, a Grade 2 storeroom lever set for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, and the Hager 2580, a Grade 2 storeroom cylindrical lock with the Withnell lever for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch. Schlage builds the storeroom function in the same series as the ND80, ANSI F86, if the rest of the building is already standardized on ND trim.
17) Our openings are 2 inch thick doors. Which cylindrical lever locks publish a range that reaches that?
The Schlage ND94 is built for a 1-3/4 inch door. Cylindrical levers with ranges that reach 2 inches and beyond include the Falcon K101, Grade 1, heavy duty, fire rated, passage function, doors 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch; the Hager 2580, Grade 2 storeroom, doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch; and the Dexter C1000 asylum lock, Grade 1, ANSI F87, doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch. Settle the function first, since none of those three is a classroom function, then confirm the leaf thickness against the range each one publishes.
18) We want these doors on the access control system rather than on keys. What cylindrical lever takes a signal?
The ND94 is a mechanical lock, keyed with a single cylinder. For a cylindrical lever that runs off a signal, the Corbin Russwin CL33903 is a Grade 1 fail safe electrified cylindrical lever operating on 12VAC/DC for doors 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch. Schlage covers the same ground within the ND Series, which offers four electrified functions that auto-detect 12/24V DC operation with maximum current draws of 0.4 amps and 0.1 amps holding current, and complies with A156.25 for electrified locking devices. Fail safe versus fail secure is the item to settle with the authority having jurisdiction before either one is released.
19) Can we run these doors on codes instead of issuing keys, and does that change the function we order?
The ND94 is a keyed lock, single cylinder, supplied with two nickel silver cut keys per lock, and its standard cylinder is a conventional 6-pin in the Schlage C keyway. Keypad alternatives in cylindrical lever format include the Delaney LP250, a Grade 2 electronic keypad leverlock, and the Lockey 1150, a heavy duty mechanical keypad lever set with double combination in the passage function for doors 1-1/8 inch to 2 inch. Function is the catch: the Lockey 1150 is a passage function set, so it is not a like-for-like stand-in for a classroom function lock. It also moves the opening off the key system, which matters if the remaining doors are keyed into a Schlage C suite.
20) The drawings call for lever operation on the accessible route. Do the ball knob cylindrical locks satisfy that?
Not if the specification is written for lever trim. The ND94 is a lever set, and Schlage states the ND Series meets ADA requirements and complies with ICC A117.1 Accessible and Usable Buildings and Facilities. The Arrow MK33-BD-CS is a Grade 2 asylum cylindrical lock with a ball knob and a conventional cylinder in the Schlage C keyway, and the Arrow HK11 is a turn-pushbutton entrance cylindrical lock, also with a ball knob. Both are knob trim regardless of how they are keyed, so on an opening where the drawings say lever, the search stays with lever sets.
21) Half the building runs Yale hardware and the master key system is Schlage C. How does that affect keying a new ND94 into the suite?
The ND94's standard cylinder is a conventional 6-pin in the Schlage C keyway, and it is also built less cylinder and less FSIC cylinder so a locksmith can pin it into an existing system rather than accept factory keyed different. Schlage supports mixed cylinder work across the ND Series with three spring cage sets that cover all Schlage plus eight competitive cylinder formats. On the Yale side of the building, the Accentra 107S is a Schlage cylinder adapter kit for Yale hardware, which is the piece that lets that trim carry the Schlage cylinder already being keyed. Between the two, one key system can run across both halves of the property.
22) What goes on the closet and corridor doors that never need a key, on a job where the keyed openings are Grade 1 classroom locks?
Grade 1 non-keyed cylindrical levers from other makers include the Falcon T101, a Grade 1 heavy duty passage lever with pressure release technology, and the Falcon K101, Grade 1 heavy duty passage, fire rated, for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch. For a leaf that only needs trim on one face, the BEST 9K Series 1DT is a Grade 1 non-keyed single dummy lever and the Accentra 455LN Augusta is a Grade 1 single dummy in the 5400 Series. The keyed openings stay on the ND94, which is Grade 1, heavy duty, non-handed, and ANSI/BHMA F84 classroom. Finish is the item to line up across a mixed order, since the ND94 is built in 626 satin chrome, 605 bright brass and 613 oil rubbed bronze among others.
