Schlage ND SERIES OVERVIEW

The Schlage ND Series offers a full breadth of commercial lock options with a suited combination of mechanical, electrified and electronic options. This overview covers common characteristics for the mechanical and electrified lock information.

Beyond grade 1 performance is the hallmark of the mechanical and electrified locks. ND Series locks are tested to withstand 3,100 in-lb. of abusive lever torque - more than 2 1/2 times the Grade 1 standard requirement. Offset lever pull testing up to 1,600 lbs. assures you of the lock's superb resistance against pry bar attacks. More than strong, ND Series is built to last and shows nearly zero droop or wobble after 16 million cycles.

All ND Series locks including electronic and ligature-resistant trim use the common cylindrical ANSI 161 door preparation making them easily interchangeable. They are ideal for all new construction and retrofit applications.

ND Series Mechanical Lock

The ND mechanical lock, along with being Schlage’s best selling mechanical lock, is the foundation for both the wired electrified and NDE wireless electronic lock. Not only did Schlage invent the cylindrical lock, but they continue to make it better with capabilities such as:

  • Unparalleled strength - the lock prevents access even when subjected to torque loads up to 3,100 in-lbs (2.6x BHMA1), withstands pry bar attacks of 1,600 lbs (8x BHMA requirements1), and withstands 100 hammer blows (20x BHMA requirements1, 2)
  • Exceptional durability - cycle tested to over 16M cycles (16x BHMA requirements1) with near zero droop or wobble - without the use of set screws or O-rings
  • Improved feel - improved strength and durability are more than numbers, you can actually feel it in the lock
  • Improved installation - installation is even easier than before (and withoutany set screws or O-rings)

Schlage ND97P-ATH-626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does the Schlage ND97 corridor lock actually do when it's locked?
The ND97 is a corridor/dormitory function lock. Outside lever is locked or unlocked by key. Inside there's a pushbutton: press it to lock the outside lever, and turning the inside lever or closing the door releases the button. Once the outside lever has been locked by key, only a key will unlock it again, so a resident can't leave the door on latch after staff have secured it. The inside lever is always free for immediate egress.
2) Will the Schlage ND97 fit my existing door prep?
If the door is prepped to the standard ANSI 161 cylindrical prep at a 2-3/4 inch backset, the ND97 drops in. All ND Series locks, including the electronic and ligature-resistant trims, share that common cylindrical prep, so swapping functions later means changing the lock, not the door. It ships with the 13-247 deadlatch (2-3/4 inch backset, 1-1/8 x 2-1/4 inch square corner faceplate) and the 10-025 ANSI strike, 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inches with a 1-3/16 inch lip. Doors must be 1-3/4 inches thick.
3) Does the Schlage ND97 work on a 1-3/8 inch door?
No. The ND97 is built for 1-3/4 inch doors only. For a 1-3/8 inch leaf you need a lock with a thickness range that covers it, such as the Falcon K101, a Grade 1 heavy duty cylindrical lock rated 1-3/8 to 2-1/4 inches, or the Dexter C1000 Series, rated 1-3/8 to 2 inches. Those are passage and other functions though, so check the function matches what you need on the opening.
4) Do I have to order the Schlage ND97 handed for a left or right hand door?
No handing to specify. The ND97 is non-handed, with the same lever, rose and finish on both faces of the door and a matching latch and strike. One part number covers left and right hand openings, which keeps a multi-door order simple and means a spare on the shelf fits any door in the building.
5) How do I order the Schlage ND97 keyed alike across a building?
Keying is a required selection: keyed different (KD) is standard, or keyed alike (KA) when you want a group of locks on one key. The standard cylinder is the P conventional 6-pin in the Schlage C keyway, and every lock ships with two nickel silver cut keys. If you're feeding the locks into an existing masterkey system, order the L (less cylinder) or J (less FSIC cylinder) option and pin your own. There's also a free text field for special cylinder or keying requirements, which is where bitting lists and master key system numbers go.
6) Can I use my own cylinders in the Schlage ND97, like a BEST SFIC or another brand?
Yes. The ND Series uses three spring cage sets that accept all Schlage cylinder formats (conventional, FSIC and SFIC) plus eight competitive cylinder formats. Order it as L (less cylinder) or J (less FSIC cylinder) and supply your own. Worth knowing: the published beyond Grade 1 torque and pull numbers apply to ND locks with Schlage cylinders. With a non-Schlage cylinder the lock still exceeds BHMA Grade 1, but performance may be below what it achieves with a Schlage cylinder.
7) Is the Schlage ND97 approved for a fire rated door?
Yes. ND Series locks are UL and cUL listed for 3 hour A label single fire doors up to 4'0" x 10'0", and for pair doors at 3 hour up to 8'0" x 8'0" or 90 minute up to 8'0" x 10'0", both with the 3/4 inch latch option. The lock is certified under ANSI/BHMA A156.2 Series 4000 Grade 1, and the ND97 carries the ANSI F90 function designation.
8) What does Vandlgard mean on the Schlage ND97, and is it worth it for a dorm or school corridor?
Vandlgard trim lets the outside lever rotate freely up and down when the lock is secured, so force applied to the lever never reaches the chassis. In corridors, dorms and school wings where someone will hang off or kick a lever, that's the difference between a lever that spins and a lock you replace. Underneath it's still the standard ND chassis, tested to 3,100 in-lb of abusive lever torque, 1,600 lbs offset lever pull, and over 16 million cycles with near zero droop or wobble, with no set screws or O-rings.
9) Does the Schlage ND97 meet ADA and accessibility requirements?
The ND Series meets ADA requirements and complies with ICC A117.1 for accessible and usable buildings. It's a lever, not a knob, which is what accessible openings call for. If you're also under the California fire code lever return rule, the levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch or less are Rhodes, Sparta, Tubular, Omega, Longitude and Boardwalk, so pick from those. The ND97 also meets the Buy American Act and federal FF-H-106C Series 161.
10) What is the closest Grade 1 heavy-duty cylindrical lever alternative to the Schlage ND97 corridor lock?
The ND97 is a Grade 1, heavy-duty cylindrical lever lock with a corridor function - key control from outside, pushbutton locking from inside that releases when the inside lever is turned or the door closes. Among Grade 1 cylindrical lever locks, the Dexter C1000 Series Entry/Office lock is the nearest keyed peer at Grade 1, and it fits doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch. The Dexter C1000 uses an entry/office function rather than a corridor function, so the pushbutton behavior differs: confirm which locking sequence the opening needs before substituting.
11) Can a Grade 2 storeroom lever be used instead of a Schlage ND97 on a dormitory door?
They solve different problems. The ND97 is a corridor function: the outside lever is locked or unlocked by key, an inside pushbutton locks it, and turning the inside lever or closing the door releases the button, with the inside lever always free for egress. The Hager 2580 is a Grade 2 storeroom cylindrical lock with a Withnell lever, and the Cal-Royal AG05 is a Grade 2 storeroom lever lockset with a deadlocking latchbolt. A storeroom function keeps the outside lever locked at all times with no occupant-controlled pushbutton, so a resident cannot secure or release the door from inside. Use a storeroom lever where the door should stay locked continuously, and the ND97 where the occupant needs to set the lock.
12) Is a classroom lever the same as the Schlage ND97 corridor lock?
No. Both are keyed, but the locking control sits in a different place. On the ND97 the outside lever is locked or unlocked by key and also by a pushbutton on the inside, with the inside lever always unlocked for egress. The Dexter C1000 Series classroom lock is a Grade 1 clutching keyed lever for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, and the Cal-Royal AG03 is a Grade 2 classroom lever with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway and 2-3/4 inch backset. A classroom function is locked and unlocked by key only from the outside, with no inside pushbutton, so an occupant cannot secure the door without a key. Where the occupant needs inside control, the corridor function is the one to specify.
13) What keyed lever works with the Schlage C keyway if the ND97 is not the right function?
The ND97 uses a conventional 6-pin cylinder in the Schlage C keyway as its standard cylinder option, which lets it join an existing Schlage-keyed system. Other keyed levers that also take a 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different include the Cal-Royal AG00 entrance lever, a Grade 2 lever with a 2-3/8 inch backset for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, and the Cal-Royal AG03 classroom lever with a 2-3/4 inch backset. Note the backset difference: the ND97 standard latch is a 13-247 deadlatch with a 2-3/4 inch backset, so the AG00 at 2-3/8 inch would need the door prep checked before it goes in an ND97 opening.
14) What is the alternative to a Schlage ND97 when the corridor door needs to release on a fire alarm or access control signal?
The ND97 is a mechanical lock with no electronic operation - it is controlled by key and by the inside pushbutton only. Where the opening has to tie into access control or unlock on a signal, the electrified equivalents are the Corbin Russwin CL33903, a Grade 1 fail safe electrified cylindrical lever running 12VAC/DC for doors 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch. Fail safe means the lever unlocks when power is removed, which is the behavior a monitored egress path usually calls for and which the mechanical ND97 cannot provide.
15) What lever styles and finishes can I get on the Schlage ND97 to match my other doors?
Nine lever designs: Athens, Boardwalk, Broadway, Latitude, Longitude, Omega, Rhodes, Sparta and Tubular. Ten finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 626AM satin chrome antimicrobial and 643E aged bronze. If you're standardizing a facility, ND locks suite with Von Duprin exit devices and other Schlage products, and match Schlage ALX Series Grade 2 locks for the lower traffic openings. The 626AM antimicrobial finish is the one healthcare and school buyers usually want on corridor levers.
16) What's the difference between the Schlage ND97 corridor lock and a classroom or storeroom function?
Function is about who controls the door and from which side. The ND97 corridor lock is keyed outside with pushbutton locking inside, so the occupant can secure the door from within, and once staff key-lock it only a key reopens it. A storeroom function (ND80, ANSI F86) stays locked outside at all times with no inside control. A classroom lock (ND70, ANSI F84) is locked and unlocked only by key from the outside, with no pushbutton. If you need someone inside the room to be able to lock the door, corridor is the function; if the door should never be left unlocked by an occupant, take storeroom.
17) What are the alternatives to the Schlage ND97 if I need a keyed Grade 1 cylindrical lever on a Schlage C keyway?
Staying Grade 1 cylindrical, the Dexter C1000 Series covers entry/office, classroom, classroom security and asylum functions on 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Corbin Russwin CL3100 Series is a Grade 1 vandal resistant cylindrical lever for 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors. For a lighter duty opening on a budget, the Cal-Royal AG Series comes with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway already, so it keys into the same system: the AG03 classroom at a 2-3/4 inch backset, or the AG05 Grade 2 storeroom on 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors. None of those is a corridor function, so match the function first.
18) Can I get the Schlage ND97 with an electric strike or as an electrified lock?
The ND97 itself is a mechanical, non-electronic lock. The ND Series does carry four electrified functions that auto-detect 12/24V DC, draw a maximum 0.4 amps with 0.1 amps holding current, and comply with ANSI/BHMA A156.25 for indoor use. Corridor is not one of them, so if the opening needs access control, look at the electrified ND functions or the NDE wireless electronic lock rather than this one. All of them share the same ANSI 161 prep, so the door work is the same either way.
19) Will the Schlage ND97 hold up in a high traffic apartment or hotel corridor?
That's the opening it's built for. Heavy duty commercial Grade 1, zinc and steel, cycle tested past 16 million cycles with no visible lever sag and without set screws or spacers to take up slack. Five points of engagement keep droop and wobble near zero over that life, and the vertical lever impact test runs a minimum 100 impacts without gaining access. In a building where every resident leans on the lever daily, that's the spec that matters more than the torque number.
20) What Grade 1 lever lock should be used on the non-keyed doors in the same corridor as Schlage ND97 locks?
The ND97 is keyed and ships with two keys. For the passage and closet doors in the same run that do not need a key, Grade 1 non-keyed cylindrical levers include the Falcon K101, a Grade 1 heavy-duty passage lock with non-handed levers rated for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch and fire rated, and the Corbin Russwin CL3110, a Grade 1 vandal-resistant passage/closet lever for doors 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch, also fire rated. Both hold the same Grade 1 level as the ND97, so the corridor keeps one performance standard across keyed and non-keyed openings.
21) Is there a lighter-duty keyed lever alternative to the Schlage ND97 for lower-traffic doors?
The ND97 is a Grade 1 heavy-duty cylindrical lever. For openings that do not see corridor-level traffic, Grade 2 keyed cylindrical levers in the same family of function include the Falcon B511CP6D, a Grade 2 medium-duty entry/office lever, and the Hager 2525, a Grade 2 commercial cylindrical entry lock with a lever handle for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch. Both use an entrance/office function rather than the ND97 corridor function, and neither is rated to the Grade 1 level, so match the choice to the traffic and to the locking behavior the door actually needs.
22) What pairs with a Schlage ND97 on a door that only needs matching trim, not a working lock?
The ND97 is a working keyed lever with a cylinder and latch. On an inactive leaf or a door that needs the look without a latch, a dummy trim is the part to order: the BEST 9K Series 1DT is a Grade 1 heavy-duty non-keyed single dummy trim cylindrical lever, and the Accentra 455LN Augusta is a Grade 1 heavy-duty single dummy cylindrical lever in the 5400 Series. Both are Grade 1 like the ND97, so the appearance and build level stay consistent down the run, but neither latches or locks.
23) What lever lock should replace a Schlage ND97 on a behavioral health or detention-type opening?
The ND97 carries Vandlgard trim, where the lever rotates freely when locked to protect the chassis, which addresses force on the lever but not ligature or institutional requirements. For asylum, institution, and utility openings the function to look at is an asylum lock: the Dexter C1000 Series asylum lock is Grade 1, ANSI F87, for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch, and the Arrow MK33-BD-CS is a Grade 2 asylum lock with a ball knob and a conventional Schlage C keyway cylinder. The asylum function keys both sides, which the corridor function of the ND97 does not do.
24) Is a residential grade lever an acceptable substitute for a Schlage ND97 in an apartment corridor?
The ND97 is a commercial Grade 1 heavy-duty cylindrical lever. Grade 3 levers such as the Kwikset 200BRNL Breton passage lever and the Kwikset 300BRNL Breton privacy lever both fit doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch and serve passage and privacy openings inside a unit, not a keyed corridor door. They are non-keyed functions at Grade 3 rather than a keyed Grade 1 corridor lock, so they belong on interior unit doors while the ND97 handles the keyed entry into the corridor.
25) What replaces a Schlage ND97 when the door needs keyless code entry instead of a key?
The ND97 is keyed with a single cylinder and includes two keys, and it is not an electronic lock. Where the goal is to stop issuing keys, the code-entry lever options are the Delaney LP250 electronic keypad leverlock at Grade 2, the Lockey 1150 heavy-duty mechanical keypad lever set with double combination for doors 1-1/8 inch to 2 inch, and the Emtek Classic keypad leverset. The Lockey 1150 is mechanical, so it needs no power or batteries, while the LP250 is electronic. None of them provides the ND97 corridor pushbutton sequence, so confirm how the door should behave once a code is entered.
26) Does a Schlage ND97 fit doors thicker than 1-3/4 inch, and what covers a thicker door?
The ND97 is built for a 1-3/4 inch door as standard. On openings that run thicker, Grade 1 cylindrical levers with a stated thicker range include the Falcon K101 at 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch and the Corbin Russwin CL3110 at 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch; the Dexter C1000 asylum lock covers 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch. Those are passage and asylum functions rather than corridor, so measure the door first and then decide whether the opening can accept a different function or whether the ND97 needs a thick-door arrangement.
27) What is the difference between a Schlage ND97 and a Grade 1 vandal resistant lever from another maker?
Both address abuse on the lever. The ND97 uses Vandlgard trim, where the lever rotates freely up and down when locked so force on the lever does not reach the chassis, and it is a keyed corridor function at Grade 1. The Corbin Russwin CL3110 is a Grade 1 vandal-resistant cylindrical lever in the CL3100 Series, fire rated, for doors 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch - but it is a passage/closet function with no cylinder. Where the door has to lock, the vandal-resistant passage lever is not a substitute regardless of matching grade.
28) Is the Schlage ND97 rated for hurricane zone openings in Florida?
Yes. The ND Series complies with the Florida Building Code under ASTM E330, E1886 and E1996, and with Miami Dade TAS 201, 202 and 203 for hurricane requirements. That covers the lock; the opening as a whole still has to be an approved assembly.
29) Can I upgrade the Schlage ND97 to high security keys later?
Yes. ND Series locks accept Primus XP UL 437 listed cylinders for high security, patented key control, and the series supports open, patented and restricted key systems. So a building can start on the standard S123 conventional cylinder and keyway and move restricted later by changing cylinders, not locks.
