Schlage ND SERIES OVERVIEW

The Schlage ND Series offers a full breadth of commercial lock options with a suited combination of mechanical, electrified and electronic options. This overview covers common characteristics for the mechanical and electrified lock information.

Beyond grade 1 performance is the hallmark of the mechanical and electrified locks. ND Series locks are tested to withstand 3,100 in-lb. of abusive lever torque - more than 2 1/2 times the Grade 1 standard requirement. Offset lever pull testing up to 1,600 lbs. assures you of the lock's superb resistance against pry bar attacks. More than strong, ND Series is built to last and shows nearly zero droop or wobble after 16 million cycles.

All ND Series locks including electronic and ligature-resistant trim use the common cylindrical ANSI 161 door preparation making them easily interchangeable. They are ideal for all new construction and retrofit applications.

ND Series Mechanical Lock

The ND mechanical lock, along with being Schlage’s best selling mechanical lock, is the foundation for both the wired electrified and NDE wireless electronic lock. Not only did Schlage invent the cylindrical lock, but they continue to make it better with capabilities such as:

  • Unparalleled strength - the lock prevents access even when subjected to torque loads up to 3,100 in-lbs (2.6x BHMA1), withstands pry bar attacks of 1,600 lbs (8x BHMA requirements1), and withstands 100 hammer blows (20x BHMA requirements1, 2)
  • Exceptional durability - cycle tested to over 16M cycles (16x BHMA requirements1) with near zero droop or wobble - without the use of set screws or O-rings
  • Improved feel - improved strength and durability are more than numbers, you can actually feel it in the lock
  • Improved installation - installation is even easier than before (and withoutany set screws or O-rings)

Schlage ND73PD RHO 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does the Schlage ND73 corridor lock actually do when someone pushes the button inside?
The ND73 is a corridor/dormitory function lock. Pushing the button on the inside locks the outside lever. Turning the inside lever or closing the door releases the button, so the button will not stay set once the door swings shut. The one exception: if you lock the outside lever with the key, only the key unlocks it again, the button will not. The inside lever is always free for egress. That combination is what makes it a dorm room or corridor door lock rather than a storeroom lock, which stays locked outside all the time.
2) Will the Schlage ND73 fit my existing door prep, and what door thickness does it take?
The ND73 uses the standard cylindrical ANSI 161 door preparation, so it drops into an existing 161 prep and interchanges with the rest of the ND Series, including the electronic and ligature-resistant trims. Door thickness is 1-3/4 inches, the standard commercial door. The lock is non-handed, so you do not specify hand when you order.
3) What latch and strike come with the Schlage ND73, and will they land in my existing frame cutout?
Standard latch is the 13-247 deadlatch with a 2-3/4 inch backset and a square corner faceplate measuring 1-1/8 x 2-1/4 inches. Standard strike is the 10-025 ANSI strike, 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inches with a 1-3/16 inch lip, supplied with no box. If your frame is already cut for an ANSI strike and the door is bored on a 2-3/4 inch backset, both parts land in the existing prep. A door bored at 2-3/8 inches will not take the standard latch, and a frame with a small round-corner strike cutout needs to be modified for the ANSI shape.
4) Should I use a corridor lock or a classroom lock on dorm and student room doors?
Corridor function (ND73) gives the occupant control: they set the pushbutton from inside to lock the outside lever, and staff can still key in. Classroom function (ND70, ANSI F84) is the opposite arrangement, keyed from the outside only, with no inside pushbutton, which is what you want when only staff should decide whether a door is locked. Put the ND73 on dorm rooms and offices where the occupant locks up behind themselves, and the ND70 where the institution keeps that control. Both share the same ND chassis and 161 prep, so you can mix them across a building and standardize on one lever design and finish.
5) What do I have to specify when ordering a Schlage ND73?
Four choices. Lever design, one of nine: Athens, Boardwalk, Broadway, Latitude, Longitude, Omega, Rhodes, Sparta or Tubular. Finish, one of ten: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 626AM satin chrome antimicrobial, or 643E aged bronze. Cylinder: P conventional 6-pin in the Schlage C keyway (standard), L less cylinder, or J less FSIC cylinder. And keying: keyed different, or keyed alike if you want a group of doors on one key. Pick L or J only when your locksmith is supplying cylinders from your own key system.
6) Can I get a set of Schlage ND73 corridor locks keyed alike on one key?
Yes, keyed alike is an ordering option, and it is the usual choice when one person needs a single key for a run of doors. Ordered keyed different, each lock has its own key. The standard cylinder is a conventional 6-pin in the Schlage C keyway and each lock ships with two nickel silver cut keys. If your building runs on a restricted or patented key system, order less cylinder (L) or less FSIC (J) and have your locksmith install cylinders from your existing system.
7) Is the Schlage ND73 approved for a fire rated corridor door?
UL and cUL listed, covering 3-hour A label single fire doors up to 4 ft x 10 ft, and pairs to 8 ft x 8 ft at 3 hours or 8 ft x 10 ft at 90 minutes with the 3/4 inch latch option. Certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.2 Series 4000, Grade 1, ADA compliant, and compliant with ICC A117.1. Note the pair-door ratings depend on ordering the 3/4 inch latch rather than the standard 13-247 deadlatch.
8) My door is thicker than 1-3/4 inches. What Grade 1 lever lock will fit?
The ND73 is set up for 1-3/4 inch doors, so it is the wrong choice on a thicker leaf. For Grade 1 cylindrical levers with a wider thickness range, the Falcon K101 covers 1-3/8 to 2-1/4 inches, the Dexter C1000 asylum function covers 1-3/8 to 2 inches, and the Corbin Russwin CL3100 series covers 1-3/4 to 2 inches. Those are passage, asylum and passage functions respectively, so match the function to what the door has to do before you order.
9) What is the closest Grade 1 keyed cylindrical lever equivalent to a Schlage ND73 corridor lock from another manufacturer?
The ND73 is a Grade 1 cylindrical keyed lever lock in the ND Series, keyed with a Schlage C keyway conventional 6-pin cylinder on the standard P option. The nearest Grade 1 keyed cylindrical lever peers are the Dexter C1000 Series in Entry/Office function (DEX-C1000-ENTR) and the Dexter C1000 Series Classroom lever (DEX-C1000-CLRM), both Grade 1 clutching keyed cylindrical levers. Neither is a corridor function, so the lever operation differs: the ND73 is locked or unlocked by key from outside with pushbutton locking from inside, and turning the inside lever or closing the door releases the button.
10) What should be used instead of an ND73 on a door that must stay latched but never locked?
A corridor lock is keyed and carries a cylinder; on a door that only needs to latch, a passage function is the right part. In Grade 1, the Falcon K101 is a heavy-duty passage cylindrical lock with non-handed levers, fire rated, for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch thick, and the Corbin Russwin CL3110 is a Grade 1 vandal resistant passage/closet cylindrical lever, fire rated, for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors. The Design Hardware X75 is a Grade 1 passage lever lockset with a flat lever for 1-3/4 inch doors.
11) Which cylindrical levers besides Schlage take a Schlage C keyway so they can be keyed into the same system?
The ND73 ships standard with a P conventional 6-pin cylinder in the Schlage C keyway. Among other brands, the Cal-Royal AG00 entrance lever uses a 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different with a 2-3/8 inch backset, the Cal-Royal AG03 classroom lever uses a 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different with a 2-3/4 inch backset, and the Arrow MK33-BD-CS asylum lock uses a conventional cylinder in the Schlage C keyway. The ND73 standard latch is a 13-247 deadlatch on a 2-3/4 inch backset, so the AG03 matches that backset while the AG00 does not.
12) What is the difference between an ND73 corridor lock and a classroom or classroom security lever?
The ND73 corridor function is locked or unlocked by key from outside with pushbutton locking from inside, and the button releases when the inside lever is turned or the door closes. A classroom lever such as the Dexter C1000 Series Grade 1 classroom lock is keyed and clutching, and the Dexter C1000 Series classroom security version is a separate Grade 1 keyed clutching function; both are for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors. The Cal-Royal AG03 is a Grade 2 classroom lever on a 2-3/4 inch backset. The distinction that matters is whether a teacher must be able to secure the door without stepping into the corridor.
13) What replaces an ND73 when the door needs to be released electrically from a control point?
The ND73 is a mechanical lock with no electronic operation. Where an opening must release from an access control panel, the Corbin Russwin CL33903 is a Grade 1 fail safe electrified cylindrical lever in the CL33900 Series running on 12VAC/DC for doors 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch thick, offered with the NZ lever and D rose. The ND73 standard latch is a 13-247 deadlatch on a 2-3/4 inch backset with a 1-1/8 by 2-1/4 inch square corner faceplate, so verify the existing latch prep before swapping in an electrified chassis.
14) Which Grade 1 lever suits a utility or holding room rather than a corridor door?
The ND73 corridor function always leaves the inside lever unlocked for immediate egress. A utility or holding room that must lock from both sides calls for an asylum function instead: the Dexter C1000 Series asylum lock is Grade 1, ANSI F87, for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch thick. The Arrow MK33-BD-CS is a Grade 2 asylum lock with a ball knob and a conventional Schlage C keyway cylinder. Confirm the egress requirement for the room before specifying either, since neither leaves the inside side free.
15) Which Schlage ND73 lever designs meet California fire code for lever return?
Rhodes, Sparta, Tubular, Omega, Longitude and Boardwalk have a return to door of 1/2 inch or less and comply with the California fire code requirement. Athens, Broadway and Latitude are also offered on the ND73 but are not on that compliance list, so on a California job specify from the six named designs.
16) Is a Grade 1 cylindrical lever lock worth it over a Grade 2 on a high traffic corridor?
On a corridor or dorm door taking constant use, yes. The ND chassis is tested to 3,100 in-lb of abusive lever torque, resists 1,600 lbs of offset lever pull, and runs past 16 million cycles with near zero droop or wobble, with no set screws or O-rings holding the lever up. That torque and pull performance applies with Schlage cylinders (conventional, FSIC or SFIC); with a non-Schlage cylinder it still exceeds BHMA Grade 1 but may not reach those numbers. For a low traffic interior door, a Grade 2 lever such as the Hager 2525 entry lock or the Falcon B511CP6D entry/office lock is the lighter duty option.
17) Can I match Schlage ND73 corridor locks to the passage and privacy doors in the same building?
Yes. The ND Series carries 24 mechanical functions on the same chassis and the same ANSI 161 prep, so the ND10 passage lock, ND40 privacy lock, ND50 entrance/office and ND80 storeroom all take the same lever design and finish as the ND73. The series also suits with Schlage ALX Grade 2 locks and with Von Duprin exit devices, which is how you keep a lobby exit device looking like the room doors. Pick one lever and one finish and carry them across the whole opening schedule.
18) Does the Schlage ND73 accept cylinders from another manufacturer's key system?
Three spring cage sets cover all Schlage cylinder formats plus eight competitive cylinder formats, so a building already keyed on another manufacturer's system can usually be served. Order the L (less cylinder) or J (less FSIC cylinder) option and have your locksmith fit cylinders from your existing system. Keep in mind the published torque and pull numbers apply with Schlage cylinders; with a non-Schlage cylinder the lock still exceeds BHMA Grade 1 but may not reach those figures. For high security keying, Primus XP UL 437 listed cylinders are the option.
19) Is the Schlage ND73 a Buy American Act compliant lock for a government job?
Yes, the ND Series meets BAA (Buy American Act) requirements and also meets the federal specification FF-H-106C Series 161. It complies with the Florida Building Code hurricane requirements (ASTM E330, E1886, E1996) and Miami Dade TAS 201, 202 and 203 as well, which matters on coastal government and institutional work.
20) What is the ND73 made of, and will it hold up to abuse on a student or public corridor door?
Zinc and steel construction, heavy duty, and it is the option to look at where levers get abused. The chassis holds against 3,100 in-lb of lever torque and 100 vertical lever impacts without gaining access, and five points of engagement keep the lever from drooping over 16 million cycles without set screws or O-rings. If vandalism is the specific worry rather than wear, the ND Series also offers Vandlgard models, where the lever rotates freely when locked so force on the lever never reaches the chassis.
21) I need a keyed lever lock but the ND73 corridor function is not what my door needs. What other functions are there?
Corridor function suits a door where the occupant locks up from inside. If that is not the job: ND50 (ANSI F82) entrance/office, ND53 (F109) entrance, ND70 (F84) classroom and ND80 (F86) storeroom are the other main keyed functions, with six more beyond those. Non-keyed, there is ND10 (F75) passage, ND12 (F89) exit and ND40 (F76) privacy. Special functions include ND30 (F77) patio and ND72 (F80) communicating. All share the 161 prep, so the lever, finish and door prep stay the same whichever you pick.
22) What lever should go on a restroom or bedroom door where an ND73 corridor lock is the wrong function?
The ND73 is keyed with a single cylinder, which is not what a bath or bedroom door wants. For those openings the Hager 2540 is a Grade 2 privacy cylindrical lock with a Withnell lever for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch thick, and the Arrow MK02-TA is a privacy/bed/bath cylindrical lock with a Tudor knob for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors with a fire rating. Note the Arrow is a knob rather than a lever, which matters where ADA lever operation is required.
23) Can a dummy lever be ordered to match an ND73 on an inactive leaf?
An ND73 is a keyed working lockset, so an inactive leaf needs a separate dummy trim. In Grade 1 heavy duty the BEST 9K Series 1DT is a single dummy trim cylindrical lever, non-keyed, and the Accentra 455LN Augusta is a Grade 1 heavy-duty single dummy cylindrical lever. The BEST 7KC Series single dummy trim is the Grade 2 medium-duty version of the same idea. Dummy trim does not latch, so it suits only the leaf that stays fixed.
24) Will a Schlage cylinder adapter let Yale hardware key into the same system as an ND73?
The ND73 uses a Schlage C keyway conventional 6-pin cylinder as its standard P option. Where Yale hardware sits on other doors in the same facility, the Accentra 107S is a Schlage cylinder adapter kit for Yale hardware, which is what lets that hardware accept a Schlage cylinder rather than requiring a second key system. It is an adapter kit, not a lockset, so it does not replace the ND73 on any opening.
25) Is a residential-grade lever an acceptable substitute for an ND73 in a multi-family corridor?
The ND73 is a commercial heavy-duty Grade 1 lock. Levers such as the Kwikset 200BRNL Breton passage and the Kwikset 300BRNL Breton privacy are Grade 3 for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch thick, and the Cal-Royal AUS00 entrance/office lever is Grade 3 with a solid brass forged body for the same door range. Grade 3 levers are built to a different cycle and strength standard than Grade 1, and none of the three are corridor function.
26) Can a keypad lever be used instead of an ND73 to avoid issuing keys?
The ND73 comes with two nickel silver cut keys per lock and is keyed with a single cylinder. Where a facility would rather manage codes than keys, the Lockey 1150 is a heavy-duty mechanical keypad lever set with double combination, passage function, for doors 1-1/8 inch to 2 inch thick, and the Delaney LP250 is a Grade 2 electronic keypad leverlock. Neither offers the corridor arrangement where an inside pushbutton locks the outside lever and only a key restores it.
27) Does exit device lever trim serve the same purpose as an ND73 cylindrical lock?
No. The ND73 is a cylindrical lockset with its own chassis, latch and strike. The Corbin Russwin 585F715 is a Grade 1 lock lever for the ED8000 pushpad exit device in the CL3300 Series for doors 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch thick, and the Imperial USA ED-EL500HD is a heavy-duty escutcheon lever trim in entry function. Both are trim that mounts to an exit device and does not latch on its own, so they belong on an opening that already carries a panic device.
28) Does an ND73 need to be ordered handed like some competing levers?
The ND73 is non-handed, so one part covers both swings and no hand needs to be stated when ordering. Some peer trim is handed: the Baldwin Estate 5103 half dummy is sold as a left hand version and a separate right hand version, each with the 5048 rose. Where a schedule mixes both, the non-handed ND73 keeps a single line item across the openings.
29) Which finish should I specify on a Schlage ND73 for a healthcare or high touch corridor?
626AM satin chrome antimicrobial is the option built for high touch openings, and it matches conventional 626 satin chrome closely enough to run alongside existing hardware. The other nine choices are 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome and 643E aged bronze. Lever and rose are the same design and finish on both faces of the door, with a coordinating latch and strike.
30) Are decorative brass levers a workable alternative to an ND73 on interior doors of a renovated building?
The ND73 is a zinc and steel commercial lock offered in ten finishes from bright brass through matte black and satin chrome antimicrobial, on nine lever designs. Where the look drives the choice on lighter interior doors, the Baldwin Estate 5103 is offered as a passage lever, a privacy lever, and left- or right-hand half dummy levers, all with the 5048 rose, and Deltana offers entry levers including the 6201 Manchester and the 6431 Linstead for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch thick. These are separate function families from the ND73 corridor lock, so match by what the door has to do first.
