Beyond grade 1 performance is the hallmark of the mechanical and electrified locks. ND Series locks are tested to withstand 3,100 in-lb. of abusive lever torque - more than 2 1/2 times the Grade 1 standard requirement. Offset lever pull testing up to 1,600 lbs. assures you of the lock's superb resistance against pry bar attacks. More than strong, ND Series is built to last and shows nearly zero droop or wobble after 16 million cycles.

All ND Series locks including electronic and ligature-resistant trim use the common cylindrical ANSI 161 door preparation making them easily interchangeable. They are ideal for all new construction and retrofit applications.

    Schlage ND70PD RHO 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

    1) Will the Schlage ND70 classroom lock fit my existing 161 prep, or do I have to redrill the door?
    No redrill on a standard commercial door. Every ND Series lock uses the common cylindrical ANSI 161 door preparation, which is why the mechanical, electrified and electronic versions are interchangeable in the same hole. The ND70 is built for both new construction and retrofit into an existing 161 prep. The standard latch is the 13-247 deadlatch on a 2-3/4 inch backset with a 1-1/8 x 2-1/4 inch square corner faceplate, so if your existing prep is a 2-3/8 inch backset, that is the detail to sort out before ordering.
    2) How does a classroom function lock actually work day to day, and is the room ever locked from the inside?
    Outside lever is locked and unlocked by key only. The inside lever is always unlocked, so anyone in the room can walk out at any time without a key or a thumbturn. That is the ANSI F84 classroom function. The practical consequence for a school: a teacher has to step into the corridor with a key to lock the door. If your district requires locking from inside the room during a lockdown, F84 is the wrong function and you want a classroom security function instead, such as the Dexter C1000 Classroom Security.
    3) Is the Schlage ND70 handed? Do I have to specify left or right?
    Non-handed. The ND70 installs on either hand of door with no field reversing and nothing to specify on the order for handing. Same lever, rose and finish go on both faces, with a matching latch and strike in the box.
    4) Can I put the Schlage ND70 on a fire rated classroom door?
    Yes, and the ratings are specific. ND Series locks are UL/cUL listed for 3-hour A label single fire doors up to 4'0" x 10'0", pair doors 3-hour up to 8'0" x 8'0" with the 3/4 inch latch option, and pair doors 90-minute up to 8'0" x 10'0" with the 3/4 inch latch option. Note the 3/4 inch latch is what carries the pair-door listings, so on a pair you have to order that latch rather than the standard one.
    5) What do I have to specify when ordering a Schlage ND70 besides finish?
    Four decisions. Lever style from nine designs (Athens, Boardwalk, Broadway, Latitude, Longitude, Omega, Rhodes, Sparta, Tubular). Finish from ten (605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 626AM satin chrome antimicrobial, 643E aged bronze). Cylinder prep: PD conventional 6-pin in the Schlage C keyway, RD full-size IC with core, JD or BD full-size IC prep less core, TD IC prep with a construction core, or LD less cylinder entirely. And keying: keyed different, keyed alike across a group of locks, or none if you are supplying your own cores.
    6) Can I key a batch of Schlage ND70 classroom locks alike to one master, or do they come keyed different?
    Both are available. Keyed different is the standard, and keyed alike is the option to pick when a group of rooms should share one key. Each lock with a P or P6 cylinder ships with two nickel silver cut keys. The keyed cylinder is a single cylinder, 6-pin, Schlage C keyway on the PD option. If you already run small format or full size interchangeable cores in the building, order an IC prep (BD, JD, RD or TD) and pin them into your existing system instead of taking the factory keying.
    7) Will the Schlage ND70 latch work with the strike already in my frame?
    Depends what is in the frame now. The lock is supplied with the 10-025 ANSI strike, 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inches with a 1-3/16 inch lip length and no box. If your existing frame is prepped for a full ANSI strike, that drops straight in. A frame cut for a small T-strike or a 2-3/4 inch full-lip strike will not take it without new prep. Check lip length too: 1-3/16 inches is measured for a standard jamb face, and a deep or offset stop can need a longer lip.
    8) I need a classroom lever lock but the Schlage ND70 is more lock than the job needs. What else is there?
    The Cal-Royal AG03 is the lighter classroom lever: Grade 2, 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different, 2-3/4 inch backset, so it shares the ND70's backset and keyway and can sit on the same key system. The Dexter C1000 Classroom is a Grade 1 classroom lever with a clutching design, rated for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors, which is the option if you need Grade 1 but have mixed door thicknesses on the job. If the room needs to be lockable from inside during a lockdown rather than by key from the corridor, the Dexter C1000 Classroom Security is the function to look at instead.
    9) Can I run Schlage ND70 classroom locks on the same key as the rest of my building's hardware?
    The ND70 takes a Schlage C keyway 6-pin conventional cylinder on the PD option, so it keys into an existing Schlage C system directly. Beyond that, three spring cage sets in the ND Series support all Schlage cylinder formats plus eight competitive cylinder formats, so a building already standardized on another manufacturer's cores can often keep its system rather than rekey. Multiple key systems are offered: open, patented and restricted. Adding Primus XP UL 437 listed cylinders takes it to a high security key control.
    10) What is the difference between a classroom lever like the ND70 and a storeroom lever?
    On the Schlage ND70 classroom lock the outside lever is locked and unlocked by key and the inside lever is always unlocked for immediate egress, so the outside lever can be left unlocked for the duration of a period. A storeroom lever such as the Cal-Royal AG05, a Grade 2 storeroom lockset with a deadlocking latchbolt for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, or the Hager 2580 Grade 2 storeroom lock with a Withnell lever for 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors, keeps the outside lever locked at all times and the key only retracts the latch - it does not leave the outside lever free. Choose classroom where the room is opened and closed on a schedule, storeroom where the door must never be left unsecured.
    11) What is the closest Grade 1 classroom lever lock to the Schlage ND70 from another manufacturer?
    The Dexter C1000 series classroom lock is the nearest peer: it is a Grade 1 cylindrical lever lock with a classroom function, keyed, with a clutching lever, and it lists a door thickness range of 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch. The Schlage ND70 is also a Grade 1 cylindrical keyed lever lock with a classroom function and is non-handed. Both are keyed-outside, free-inside classroom locks; the Dexter carries a clutching lever, while the ND70 is offered in nine lever styles including Rhodes, Sparta and Athens.
    12) Is there a Grade 2 classroom lever that uses the same Schlage C keyway as the ND70?
    Yes. The Cal-Royal AG03 is a Grade 2 classroom lever with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different and a 2-3/4 inch backset, so it drops onto the same key system as an ND70 ordered with the PD conventional 6-pin Schlage C keyway cylinder, and it uses the same 2-3/4 inch backset as the ND70 standard 13-247 deadlatch. The ND70 is Grade 1 and heavy duty; the AG03 is a Grade 2 lock in the AG Series.
    13) The classroom function does not let a teacher lock the door from inside - what should I order instead?
    For a lockdown-capable opening, the Dexter C1000 classroom security lock is the alternative: it is a Grade 1 keyed cylindrical lever lock with a classroom security function, clutching, for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch thick. The Schlage ND70 is the plain classroom function, ANSI F84, where the outside lever is locked and unlocked by key and the inside lever is always unlocked for immediate egress - meaning the key must be used from the corridor side. Classroom security adds a second cylinder so the outside lever can be locked from within the room.
    14) I need an office door where the occupant locks it with a button, not a key - is the ND70 the right lock?
    For button locking, look at an entrance/office lever instead. The Falcon B511CP6D is a Grade 2 medium duty cylindrical lever with an entry/office function, the Dexter C1000 entry/office is a Grade 1 keyed clutching lever for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Cal-Royal AG00 is an entrance lever with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different on a 2-3/8 inch backset. The Schlage ND70 is the classroom function, ANSI F84, in which the outside lever is locked and unlocked by key from the corridor side, so an occupant inside the room cannot secure the door without carrying the key.
    15) Can I use a Yale or Accentra lock on a Schlage key system alongside ND70 locks?
    The Accentra 107S is a Schlage cylinder adapter kit for Yale hardware, which is how Accentra bodies are brought onto a Schlage keyway. The Schlage ND70 accepts a PD conventional 6-pin cylinder in the Schlage C keyway as well as FSIC prep options - BD and JD less core, RD with core, and TD with a construction core - and carries an S123 cylinder and keyway designation. If the building is already keyed Schlage, the ND70 takes a Schlage cylinder directly and the Accentra body needs the adapter kit.
    16) Is the Schlage ND70 tough enough for a high traffic school or hospital corridor?
    That is the case it is built for. Grade 1 heavy duty, tested and certified under ANSI/BHMA A156.2 Series 4000, and the published test numbers run well past the grade minimum: 3,100 in-lb of abusive locked lever torque, 1,600 lbs offset lever pull against pry bar attack, 100 vertical lever impacts, and a cycle life of 16 million with no visible lever sag and no set screws or O-rings holding the lever on. Chassis and trim are zinc and steel. Note the beyond-Grade-1 figures apply with Schlage cylinders (conventional, FSIC or SFIC); with a competitor cylinder it still exceeds BHMA Grade 1 but the numbers may be lower.
    17) Does the Schlage ND70 meet ADA and accessibility code for a classroom door?
    Yes on both counts. The ND Series meets ADA requirements and complies with ICC A117.1 Accessible and Usable Buildings and Facilities. One detail for California work: the CA fire code compliance applies to levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch or less, which covers the Rhodes, Sparta, Tubular, Omega, Longitude and Boardwalk lever designs. Athens, Broadway and Latitude are not on that list, so pick from the six if the return-to-door requirement is on your drawings. The series also meets the Buy American Act and federal FF-H-106C Series 161.
    18) I'm standardizing a building. Will the Schlage ND70 match the other locks and exit devices I'm already buying?
    Trim matching is one of the reasons the ND is specified across whole facilities. The lever and rose designs suit Schlage ALX Series Grade 2 locks, so you can run ND70 on the doors that need Grade 1 and ALX on the lighter openings with the trim still matching. The ND also suites with Von Duprin exit devices and other Schlage products, which covers the corridor and stairwell doors. Because every ND function shares the ANSI 161 prep, you can change a room from classroom to storeroom or passage later without touching the door.
    19) Does the Schlage ND70 have a vandal resistant option for a lever that gets abused?
    Yes. Vandlgard models have a lever that rotates freely up and down when locked, so force applied to the lever does not reach the chassis. That is the version to order for a corridor or a public entry where levers get hung on or kicked. If you want a vandal resistant lever from another brand, the Corbin Russwin CL3110 is a Grade 1 vandal resistant cylindrical lever, though it is passage/closet function rather than classroom, and it is rated for 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors.
    20) My door does not need to be keyed - what Grade 1 lever takes the place of an ND70 on a corridor or closet door?
    For a non-keyed opening in the same heavy duty class, the Falcon K101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty passage cylindrical lock with non-handed levers, fire rated, covering doors 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch thick. The Falcon T101 is another Grade 1 heavy duty passage cylindrical lever, and the Corbin Russwin CL3110 is a Grade 1 vandal resistant passage/closet cylindrical lever, fire rated, for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors. All three latch and release without a key; the Schlage ND70 is keyed with a single cylinder and ships with two keys per lock.
    21) Will a dummy lever work as a match for an ND70 on the inactive leaf of a pair?
    A dummy trim has no latch and no chassis - it is pull trim only, so it cannot replace a working ND70, but it is what you order for the inactive leaf. Grade 1 options include the BEST 9K Series 1DT single dummy trim cylindrical lever, heavy duty and non-keyed, and the Accentra 455LN Augusta, a Grade 1 heavy duty single dummy cylindrical lever in the 5400 Series. The BEST 7KC Series single dummy trim is the Grade 2, medium duty equivalent. The Schlage ND70 is a keyed Grade 1 cylindrical lock with a 13-247 deadlatch and a 10-025 ANSI strike.
    22) My opening needs a lock that resists abuse on a detention or utility door - what goes in place of a classroom lever?
    An asylum function is the one to look at. The Dexter C1000 asylum lock is a Grade 1 cylindrical lock, ANSI F87, for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch thick, and the Arrow MK33-BD-CS is a heavy duty asylum/institution/utility cylindrical lock with a ball knob and a conventional Schlage C keyway cylinder. An asylum function is keyed on both sides so the door cannot be opened from either face without a key. The Schlage ND70 classroom function leaves the inside lever always unlocked for immediate egress, which is the opposite behavior.
    23) Is a keypad lever a substitute for a keyed classroom lock?
    It replaces the key, not the function. The Lockey 1150 is a heavy duty mechanical keypad lever set with a double combination in a passage function, fitting doors 1-1/8 inch to 2 inch thick, the Delaney LP250 is a Grade 2 electronic keypad leverlock, and Emtek offers a Classic keypad leverset. The Schlage ND70 is a mechanical, non-electronic lock, keyed with a single cylinder and two nickel silver cut keys per lock, in which the outside lever is locked and unlocked by key. On a keyed master system, a keypad lever sits outside that system and is managed by code rather than by key.
    24) Do I need an electrified lever instead of an ND70 for access control?
    If the opening is tied to a card reader or a release button, an electrified chassis is required. The Corbin Russwin CL33903 is a Grade 1 fail safe electrified cylindrical lever lock operating on 12VAC/DC, with an NZ lever and D rose, for doors 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch thick. The Schlage ND70 is a mechanical, non-electronic classroom lock. The ND Series does offer wired electrified functions on the same common cylindrical ANSI 161 door preparation, so a mechanical ND and an electrified ND interchange in the same prep.
    25) Is a residential Grade 3 lever an alternative to a Schlage ND70 for an apartment building?
    They serve different door counts and traffic. Grade 3 levers such as the Kwikset 200BRNL Breton passage and the Kwikset 300BRNL Breton privacy fit doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, and the Cal-Royal AUS00 is a Grade 3 entrance/office lever with a solid brass forged body for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors. The Schlage ND70 is a Grade 1 heavy duty commercial classroom lock, keyed, and is offered in ten finishes including 626 satin chrome, 626AM satin chrome antimicrobial and 622 matte black. In-unit interior doors are usually where the Grade 3 levers land; keyed corridor and common-area doors are where the Grade 1 classroom lock does.
    26) My door is 2 inches thick - will a Schlage ND70 fit, or do I need a different lock?
    The Schlage ND70 is built for a 1-3/4 inch door as standard. For thicker leaves, the Falcon K101 Grade 1 heavy duty passage lock covers 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch, the Corbin Russwin CL3110 Grade 1 passage/closet covers 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch, and the Dexter C1000 asylum covers 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch. Confirm the leaf thickness before ordering, because the chassis and the through-bolt length are what set the range.
    27) Is there an antimicrobial finish for the Schlage ND70 for a healthcare corridor?
    626AM, satin chrome antimicrobial, is one of the ten finishes offered, alongside 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome and 643E aged bronze. 626AM is the one to specify for patient rooms and other touch-sensitive openings where the rest of the facility is already on 626.
    28) Which decorative levers look similar to an ND70 but are not commercial locks?
    Estate and designer levers share the shape but not the class. The Baldwin Estate 5103 comes as a passage lever, a privacy lever, and left and right hand half dummy levers, all with the 5048 rose.
