1) What door thickness and backset does the Schlage ND75 come prepped for?
Standard build is a 1-3/4 inch door with a 2-3/4 inch backset. The lock ships with the 13-247 deadlatch, square corner faceplate measuring 1-1/8 x 2-1/4 inches, and the 10-025 ANSI strike, 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inches with a 1-3/16 inch lip. That is the common commercial door thickness and the deeper of the two standard backsets, so it drops onto most commercial openings as-is.
2) Will the ND75 fit the existing prep if I am replacing an older cylindrical lever lock?
All ND Series locks use the common cylindrical ANSI 161 door preparation, which is what makes them interchangeable with each other and suited to retrofit as well as new construction. Schlage also states the ND meets Federal FF-H-106C Series 161. If the door you are working on is already bored for a 161 prep at a 2-3/4 inch backset, the ND75 goes in without new machining.
3) Do I have to specify handing when I order a Schlage ND75?
No handing to call out. The ND75 is non-handed, so the same lock works on a left or right hand door and you do not need to survey every opening before placing a fleet order. Lever design, finish, cylinder option and keying are the choices you actually make.
4) Can I get Schlage ND75 locks keyed alike across a building, and how many keys come with each lock?
Keyed alike is an option at order time, alongside keyed different, which is the standard. Two nickel silver cut keys come with each lock on P6 and P cylinders. The factory cylinder is a conventional 6-pin in the Schlage C keyway, and there is a free-text field for special keying instructions if you are pinning to an existing master system.
5) What cylinder options does the ND75 offer if we already stock our own small format interchangeable cores?
Three cylinder choices: J for less FSIC cylinder, L for less cylinder, and P for the standard conventional 6-pin in the Schlage C keyway. If your facility already keys on its own cores, order J or L and install your own. Schlage also states three spring cage sets support all Schlage plus eight competitive cylinder formats, so the chassis is not locked to one cylinder brand.
6) Is the Schlage ND75 approved for a fire rated classroom door?

A storeroom function is the right choice there rather than the Schlage ND75, whose classroom security function lets a key in either lever lock or unlock the outside lever. The Cal-Royal AG05 is a Grade 2 storeroom lever lockset with a deadlocking latchbolt covering 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Hager 2580 is a Grade 2 storeroom cylindrical lock with the Withnell lever covering 1-3/8 to 2 inch doors. On a storeroom function the outside lever stays locked and is retracted by key only, which is what a supply or mechanical room usually calls for.
11) Which lever designs and finishes can I get on a Schlage ND75 so it matches the rest of my building?
Nine lever designs are offered: Athens, Boardwalk, Broadway, Latitude, Longitude, Omega, Rhodes, Sparta and Tubular. Ten finishes run 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 626AM satin chrome antimicrobial and 643E aged bronze. Both sides of the door get the same lever, rose and finish. 12) Is a Grade 1 cylindrical lever tough enough for a high traffic school corridor?
Heavy duty, and the numbers go past the Grade 1 minimum. Schlage tests the ND to 3,100 in-lb of abusive locked lever torque, 1,600 lbs offset lever pull against pry bar attack, and a minimum of 100 vertical lever impacts without gaining access. Cycle life is a minimum of 16 million with no visible lever sag and no set screws or O-rings holding the lever on. The chassis is zinc and steel. Note those figures apply with Schlage cylinders; with non-Schlage cylinders performance still exceeds BHMA Grade 1 but may be lower.
13) We only need the door locked from outside with a key. Is the ND75 the right classroom lock or is there a cheaper function?
If nobody needs to lock the door from inside the room, the ND75 is more lock than you need, since its whole point is the double cylinder that lets a key on either side throw the outside lever. The straight classroom function, ND70 (ANSI F84), keys from the corridor side only. For a room that should stay locked at all times and simply latch behind you, the ND80 storeroom function (ANSI F86) is the usual pick.
14) Is a double cylinder classroom lock allowed on an exit door?
Not recommended. Schlage flags double cylinder locks on residences and on any door used for egress as a life safety hazard in an emergency, and says installation should follow existing codes only. The ND75 is intended for the classroom side of an opening, not a required exit door. The inside lever does stay unlocked at all times for immediate egress, but confirm the application against your local code before specifying it on an egress opening.
15) Is there a Grade 2 classroom lever that costs less to standardize on than a Grade 1 classroom security lock?
The Cal-Royal AG03 classroom lever is a Grade 2 lock in the AG Series with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different and a 2-3/4 inch backset. It shares the Schlage C keyway and 2-3/4 inch backset with the Schlage ND75, which carries the Schlage C keyway in its standard conventional 6-pin cylinder and uses a 2-3/4 inch backset deadlatch. The difference in function matters: the AG03 is a classroom lock, keyed from the outside, while the ND75 is a classroom security lock where a key in either lever locks or unlocks the outside lever. The ND75 is Grade 1 heavy duty; the AG03 is Grade 2.
16) What do I use on a patient room or behavioral health door where a classroom security lever is not appropriate?
An asylum or institutional function is the one to specify. The Dexter C1000 Series asylum lock is a Grade 1 cylindrical lock on the ANSI F87 asylum function covering 1-3/8 to 2 inch doors, and the Arrow MK33-BD-CS is a Grade 2 asylum lock with a ball knob and a conventional cylinder in the Schlage C keyway. Those functions are keyed on both sides so neither lever is free-turning, unlike the Schlage ND75, where the inside lever is always unlocked for immediate egress.
17) Which lever should go on an office or entry door if the ND75 classroom security function is more than that opening needs?
An entrance or entry/office function covers it.
