Schlage ND SERIES OVERVIEW

The Schlage ND Series offers a full breadth of commercial lock options with a suited combination of mechanical, electrified and electronic options. This overview covers common characteristics for the mechanical and electrified lock information.

Beyond grade 1 performance is the hallmark of the mechanical and electrified locks. ND Series locks are tested to withstand 3,100 in-lb. of abusive lever torque - more than 2 1/2 times the Grade 1 standard requirement. Offset lever pull testing up to 1,600 lbs. assures you of the lock's superb resistance against pry bar attacks. More than strong, ND Series is built to last and shows nearly zero droop or wobble after 16 million cycles.

All ND Series locks including electronic and ligature-resistant trim use the common cylindrical ANSI 161 door preparation making them easily interchangeable. They are ideal for all new construction and retrofit applications.

    Schlage ND53PD RHO 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

    1) Is the Schlage ND53 handed, or does one lock work on both left and right hand doors?
    Non-handed. The same ND53 goes on a left or right hand opening with no field conversion, so a property manager stocking spares only needs one part for every swing in the building.
    2) What does the ND53 entrance function actually do at the door?
    Two ways to lock it from inside. Push the button and the outside lever locks until a key is used or the inside lever is turned, so it releases the next time someone walks out. Push and turn the button and the outside lever stays locked until you manually unlock it, key only from outside. The inside lever is always free for egress. That is the ANSI F109 entrance function.
    3) Will the ND53 drop into the holes my old cylindrical lock left in the door?
    If the existing prep is standard ANSI 161, yes. Every ND Series lock, including the electronic and ligature-resistant trims, uses the common cylindrical ANSI 161 door preparation, so they interchange with each other and go into new or existing openings. The standard latch is a 2-3/4 inch backset deadlatch with a 1-1/8 x 2-1/4 inch square corner faceplate, so check that your existing bore centre is 2-3/4 inch from the door edge, not 2-3/8.
    4) Will the ND53 latch into the strike that is already in my frame?
    The standard strike shipped with the ND53 is the 10-025 ANSI strike, 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inches with a 1-3/16 inch lip and no box. If your frame already has an ANSI strike cutout of that size, the new lock lines up with it. Frames with a small T-strike or a non-ANSI prep will need the frame modified or a different strike. The lip length matters too: 1-3/16 inch is sized for a standard jamb return, and a deeper trim reveal needs a longer lip.
    5) Which cylinder option do I order on a Schlage ND53 if my building is on a small format interchangeable core system?
    Six cylinder choices on the ND53. PD is the conventional 6-pin cylinder in the Schlage C keyway, the default for most jobs. For interchangeable core, RD is a Schlage full size IC prep with the core included, JD is the Schlage FSIC prep less core, BD is an FSIC prep less core, and TD comes with a construction core so the trades can work the job before you key it. LD is less cylinder entirely, for when your locksmith is supplying it. Three spring cage sets cover all Schlage formats plus eight competitive cylinder formats.
    6) Can I get a batch of Schlage ND53 locks keyed alike so one key opens all of them?
    Yes. Keying is a required selection: KD keyed different is the standard, and KA keys a group alike so a single key runs every door in the set. There is a key code field to give your existing code if you are adding to a system already in the building. Two nickel silver cut keys come with each lock. If you are ordering less cylinder, keying does not apply.
    7) Is the Schlage ND53 rated for a fire door?
    UL and cUL listed for 3 hour A label single fire doors up to 4 ft by 10 ft, and pair doors at 8 ft by 8 ft for 3 hour. For 90 minute pair doors up to 8 ft by 10 ft you need the 3/4 inch latch option. It is certified under ANSI/BHMA A156.2 Series 4000 Grade 1 and meets ADA requirements.
    8) I need the entrance door to stay locked from outside at all times with a key only. Is the ND53 the right function?
    No. The ND53 button unlocks whenever someone turns the inside lever or releases the button, so the outside lever can be left unlocked by accident. For a door that must always require a key from outside, order the ND80 ANSI F86 storeroom lock instead, where the outside lever is permanently locked and the inside lever always gives egress. For a classroom where staff key the outside lever locked or unlocked, the ND70 ANSI F84 is the function.
    9) What is the closest heavy-duty equivalent to the Schlage ND53 entrance lever from another manufacturer?
    The Schlage ND53 is a Grade 1 cylindrical lever lock with an Entrance function, using turn/push-button locking where pushing and turning the button locks the outside lever until a key is used. The Dexter C1000 Series Entry/Office lever is also a Grade 1 cylindrical lever lock in an Entrance/Office function with a clutching, keyed design, and it lists a door thickness range of 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch.     10) Is there a Grade 2 entrance lever that can be used where a Grade 1 lockset is not required?
    The Hager 2525 is a Grade 2 commercial cylindrical entry lock with a lever handle, listed for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch thick. The Falcon B511CP6D is a Grade 2 medium duty cylindrical lever in an Entry/Office function. The Schlage ND53 is a Grade 1 heavy duty cylindrical lever, so on openings where the specification calls for Grade 1 the Hager and Falcon options do not meet it; on lighter-traffic doors where Grade 2 is accepted, either covers the keyed entry function.
    11) What lever lock should be used instead of an ND53 on a door that must stay locked at all times from the outside?
    The ND53 entrance function allows the button to be released by key or by turning the inside lever, so the outside lever does not stay reliably locked once someone has been through the door. For a door that must remain locked outside at all times, a storeroom function is the right choice: the Cal-Royal AG05 is a Grade 2 storeroom lever lockset with a deadlocking latchbolt, and the Hager 2580 with Withnell lever is a Grade 2 storeroom cylindrical lock for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch thick. In the same Schlage chassis family the storeroom function is the ND80, ANSI F86.
    12) Which keyed lever locks use the same Schlage C keyway as the ND53 so they can be keyed into an existing system?
    The ND53 uses the S123 cylinder and keyway and is offered with a PD conventional 6-pin cylinder in the Schlage C keyway. Two Cal-Royal levers also carry a 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different: the AG00 entrance lever, Grade 2, with a 2-3/8 inch backset for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, and the AG03 classroom lever with a 2-3/4 inch backset.     Both are keyed entrance locks in the ND Series, but the button behaviour differs. The ND53 (ANSI F109) offers push-button locking that releases when the inside lever is turned, plus a push-and-turn mode that holds the lock until you release it by hand. The ND50 is the ANSI F82 entrance/office function. If you want the outside lever to stay locked overnight without someone accidentally releasing it on the way out, the ND53 push-and-turn is the one you want.
    14) Does the Schlage ND53 meet Buy American and federal spec requirements for a government job?
    It meets the Buy American Act and Federal spec FF-H-106C Series 161.     Nine lever styles on the ND53: Athens, Boardwalk, Broadway, Latitude, Longitude, Omega, Rhodes, Sparta and Tubular. Rhodes in 626 satin chrome is the common commercial spec. Ten finishes run from 605 bright brass and 606 satin brass through 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 643E aged bronze, plus 626AM satin chrome with an antimicrobial coating for healthcare and food service. Both levers and roses are shared with the Schlage ALX Series Grade 2 locks, so you can match appearance across a building where some openings do not need Grade 1.
    16) Is a Grade 1 lever lock worth it over a Grade 2 for a busy tenant entrance?
    On a high traffic door, yes. The ND53 is a Grade 1 heavy duty cylindrical lock tested to 16 million cycles with near zero lever droop or wobble, and it holds without granting access at 3,100 in-lb of abusive lever torque and 1,600 lbs of offset lever pull. It gets there without set screws or O-rings, so there is nothing to work loose. A Grade 2 entrance lever such as the Hager 2525 or the Falcon B511CP6D is the lighter option for interior or lower traffic openings.
    17) What else could I buy instead of a Schlage ND53 if I need a Grade 1 keyed lever?
    For Grade 1 keyed cylindrical levers, the Dexter C1000 Series entry/office lock covers 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Corbin Russwin CL3300 Series is the Grade 1 family covering 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors.     No. The Falcon K101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty cylindrical passage lock with non-handed levers, and the Corbin Russwin CL3110 is a Grade 1 vandal resistant cylindrical lever in a Passage/Closet function for doors 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch.     The Cal-Royal AUS00 is a Grade 3 entrance/office lever with a solid brass forged body for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, and the Callan Artino is a Grade 3 entrance leverset. The Schlage ND53 is certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.2 Series 4000 Grade 1 and is a commercial, heavy duty lockset in zinc and steel, cycle tested to 3 million ANSI cycles. The BEST 9K Series 1DT is a Grade 1 heavy duty single dummy trim cylindrical lever lock, non-keyed, and the BEST 7KC Series 1DT is the Grade 2 medium duty single dummy trim equivalent. The Accentra 455LN Augusta is a Grade 1 heavy duty single dummy cylindrical lever in the 5400 Series. None of these operate a latch; they mount a fixed lever for pull only, where the ND53 is a keyed entrance lock with a 13-247 deadlatch on a 2-3/4 inch backset.
    23) Is a Deltana Manchester or Baldwin Estate entry lever an alternative to a Schlage ND53?
    They serve different openings. The Deltana 6201 Manchester and 6411 Morant are entry function levers for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch, and the Baldwin Estate 5103 is offered in passage, privacy and handed half dummy versions with a 5048 rose. Those are decorative interior and residential trim lines. The ND53 is a commercial Grade 1 cylindrical lock, non-handed, certified to A156.2 and UL/cUL listed for 3-hour A label fire doors, which is what an institutional or MRO specification is usually asking for.
