Schlage ND SERIES OVERVIEW

The Schlage ND Series offers a full breadth of commercial lock options with a suited combination of mechanical, electrified and electronic options. This overview covers common characteristics for the mechanical and electrified lock information.

Beyond grade 1 performance is the hallmark of the mechanical and electrified locks. ND Series locks are tested to withstand 3,100 in-lb. of abusive lever torque - more than 2 1/2 times the Grade 1 standard requirement. Offset lever pull testing up to 1,600 lbs. assures you of the lock's superb resistance against pry bar attacks. More than strong, ND Series is built to last and shows nearly zero droop or wobble after 16 million cycles.

All ND Series locks including electronic and ligature-resistant trim use the common cylindrical ANSI 161 door preparation making them easily interchangeable. They are ideal for all new construction and retrofit applications.

ND Series Mechanical Lock

The ND mechanical lock, along with being Schlage’s best selling mechanical lock, is the foundation for both the wired electrified and NDE wireless electronic lock. Not only did Schlage invent the cylindrical lock, but they continue to make it better with capabilities such as:

  • Unparalleled strength - the lock prevents access even when subjected to torque loads up to 3,100 in-lbs (2.6x BHMA1), withstands pry bar attacks of 1,600 lbs (8x BHMA requirements1), and withstands 100 hammer blows (20x BHMA requirements1, 2)
  • Exceptional durability - cycle tested to over 16M cycles (16x BHMA requirements1) with near zero droop or wobble - without the use of set screws or O-rings
  • Improved feel - improved strength and durability are more than numbers, you can actually feel it in the lock
  • Improved installation - installation is even easier than before (and withoutany set screws or O-rings)

Schlage ND53PD RHO 626AM RH IS-LOC – Frequently Asked Questions

1) How does the Schlage ND53 entrance lock actually work day to day?
The ND53 is a keyed entrance function (ANSI F109). Push the inside button and the outside lever locks until someone unlocks it with a key or turns the inside lever. Push and turn the button instead, and the outside lever stays locked until the button is manually released, so a key is required every time in between. The inside lever always retracts the latch, so egress is never blocked. On the ND53 indicator version the interior rose reads LOCKED or UNLOCKED so staff can see the state without testing the lever.
2) Will the Schlage ND53 drop into my existing cylindrical lock prep?
Yes if the door is prepped to the standard ANSI 161 cylindrical prep. Every ND Series lock, including the indicator and electronic trims, uses that same prep, which is why they interchange in retrofit work. Plan on 1-3/4 inch doors, a 2-3/4 inch backset with the 13-247 deadlatch (1-1/8 x 2-1/4 inch square corner faceplate), and the 10-025 ANSI strike, 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inches with a 1-3/16 inch lip.
3) Do I have to specify a hand when ordering the ND53 indicator lock?
Yes. The ND53 indicator version is ordered left hand or right hand, because the indicator has to read correctly from the inside. ND Series cylindrical chassis are otherwise non-handed, but with the indicator rose you pick the hand on the order.
4) What cylinder options do I pick from on the Schlage ND53, and can I use my own core?
Four cylinder choices. PD gives you a conventional 6-pin cylinder in the Schlage C keyway with two nickel silver cut keys, keyed different as standard. BD and JD ship with full size interchangeable core prep, less core, so you supply the core from your own system (JD is the Schlage FSIC prep). LD comes less cylinder entirely, which is the one to use when you are fitting a competitor format. The ND chassis uses three spring cage sets that support all Schlage formats plus eight competitive cylinder formats.
5) Can I use the Schlage ND53 on a fire rated door?
Yes. ND Series locks are UL/cUL listed for 3-hour A label single fire doors up to 4 ft x 10 ft, and for pairs at 8 ft x 8 ft 3-hour or 8 ft x 10 ft 90-minute with the 3/4 inch latch option. They are also certified under ANSI/BHMA A156.2 Series 4000 Grade 1 and meet ADA requirements.
6) My door is 1-3/8 inch thick. Can I still get an indicator lock?
Not with the ND53 as supplied, which is set up for 1-3/4 inch doors. For a thinner door, the indicator deadbolt options cover it: the Accentra D292 (Grade 2, thumbturn x indicator) and the Arrow E50 (Grade 2 exit deadlock, Vacant/Occupied indicator outside, non-keyed) both list 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch.
7) What is the closest Grade 1 alternative to the Schlage ND53 indicator lever lock if the opening needs a privacy function instead of a keyed entrance function?
The Schlage ND53 is a keyed Grade 1 cylindrical entrance lever lock with an interior LOCKED/UNLOCKED indicator, using push-button and turn/push-button locking with a key to release. If the door is a restroom or similar privacy opening rather than a keyed entrance, the Accentra AUYPL02 in the YPL Series is a Grade 1 privacy cylindrical lock with a visual status indicator, and the Corbin Russwin CLX3320 NVSL is a Grade 1 extra heavy duty privacy/bedroom/bathroom visual status lever lock with indicator, listed for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors and carrying a fire rating. Both hold the Grade 1 level and the indicator, but they are privacy functions with no cylinder and no key.
8) I only need occupancy indication on an existing door that already has a lockset - do I need a full ND53 lever lock?
No. The Schlage ND53 is a complete Grade 1 cylindrical lever lockset with latch and strike that both locks the door and shows LOCKED/UNLOCKED on the inside, so it replaces the existing lockset entirely. If the door already has hardware and you only want status indication, an indicator deadbolt mounts above it: the Hager 3216 is a Grade 2 thumbturn by occupancy indicator deadbolt with a 1 inch throw for 1-3/4 inch doors and is fire rated, and the Accentra D292 is a Grade 2 cylindrical deadbolt with thumbturn and indicator for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors. Those are deadbolts only - they carry no lever and no latch.
9) What should I use instead of a Schlage ND53 on a public restroom that needs a key override and an occupied indicator?
The Schlage ND53 gives you a keyed entrance function with a LOCKED/UNLOCKED indicator on the inside, which is aimed at an entrance opening rather than a restroom. For a public restroom that needs staff key access plus occupancy status, the Falcon H2171 is a Grade 2 interconnected lock with an occupancy indicator and a single cylinder deadbolt in the storeroom/public restroom function. The Arrow E50 is another restroom-oriented option, a Grade 2 exit deadlock with a Vacant/Occupied indicator on the outside, though it is non-keyed and fits 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors.
10) Is the 626AM antimicrobial finish on this Schlage lock suitable for a hospital or clinic door?
626AM is satin chrome with an antimicrobial coating, and it is the only finish this ND53 indicator lock is built in. That combination, a heavy duty Grade 1 commercial cylindrical lever with a visible LOCKED/UNLOCKED readout, is what healthcare and school facilities typically standardize on for exam rooms, offices and single-occupancy spaces where staff want to read door status at a glance.
11) Which lever styles can I get on the ND53, and do any of them matter for California fire code?
Eight levers: Athens, Boardwalk, Broadway, Latitude, Omega, Rhodes, Sparta and Tubular. If you are building to California Fire Code, the levers with a 1/2 inch or less return to door are Rhodes, Sparta, Tubular, Omega and Boardwalk, so pick from those. Athens, Broadway and Latitude are not on that list.
12) ND53 or ND50 for an office door?
Both are keyed entrance/office functions, but the ND50 (ANSI F82) is the standard office lock while the ND53 (ANSI F109) adds the turn/push-button mode, which keeps the outside lever locked until the button is manually released rather than releasing it the moment someone turns the inside lever. Use the ND53 where you want the door to stay locked after someone exits, and where the LOCKED/UNLOCKED indicator on the inside rose helps the occupant confirm status. If you need the door to always lock behind you with no inside control, that is the ND80 storeroom function.
13) How tough is the Schlage ND53 for a high traffic door like a school corridor?
Built past the Grade 1 minimum. The chassis holds against 3,100 in-lb of abusive lever torque, resists 1,600 lbs of offset lever pull for pry bar attacks, takes 100 vertical lever impacts, and cycle tests to over 16 million cycles with near zero droop or wobble, without set screws or O-rings. Body is zinc and steel. Those beyond-Grade-1 numbers apply with Schlage cylinders (conventional, FSIC or SFIC); with a non-Schlage cylinder it still exceeds BHMA Grade 1 but may not reach those figures.
14) Does the Schlage ND53 come with the latch and strike, or do I order those separately?
They come with it. Standard build is the 13-247 deadlatch at 2-3/4 inch backset with a 1-1/8 x 2-1/4 inch square corner faceplate, plus the 10-025 ANSI strike, 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inches with a 1-3/16 inch lip and no box. Same lever, rose and finish on both faces. With the PD cylinder you also get two cut nickel silver keys, keyed different.
15) Can the Schlage ND53 be keyed into a high security master key system?
Yes. Ordered as PD it uses a conventional 6-pin Schlage C keyway; BD and JD take a full size interchangeable core so it drops straight into an existing FSIC system. Schlage offers open, patented and restricted key systems, and high security locking is available when the lock is used with Primus XP UL 437 listed cylinders.
16) Is the Schlage ND53 eligible for a federal or Buy American job?
Yes. ND Series locks meet the Buy American Act and Federal specification FF-H-106C Series 161. They also comply with ICC A117.1 for accessible buildings, and with the Florida Building Code (ASTM E330, E1886, E1996) and Miami Dade TAS 201, 202 and 203 hurricane requirements.
17) Is a Cal-Royal IND90-G2 indicator deadbolt a substitute for a Schlage ND53?
They are not interchangeable. The Schlage ND53 is a keyed Grade 1 cylindrical entrance lever lock with an interior indicator, non-handed in the chassis with left hand and right hand lever orientation, and it is the operating hardware for the door. The Cal-Royal IND90-G2 is a Grade 1 indicator deadbolt with an ADA thumbturn - a deadbolt function with no lever and no latch, so a separate passage or lockset still has to operate the door. Choose the ND53 when one device must latch, lock by key, and indicate; choose the IND90-G2 when you are adding a thumbturn-operated bolt with status to a door that already has handles.
18) Do the Emtek indicator privacy bolts do the same job as a Schlage ND53?
No. The Emtek 8383 Wilshire, 8483 Watford, 8583 Square and 8683 Disk are thumbturn privacy bolts with double rosettes and an indicator, intended to be used alongside a brass passage set - they provide privacy locking and status only, with the passage set doing the latching. The Schlage ND53 is a single heavy duty Grade 1 commercial cylindrical lever lock that latches, locks by key or push-button, and indicates LOCKED/UNLOCKED on the inside, built in zinc and steel for commercial use. The Emtek bolts suit a decorative residential-style opening paired with a passage set; the ND53 suits a commercial keyed entrance.
19) Is there a lighter duty indicator option than the Schlage ND53 for a low traffic interior door?
The Schlage ND53 is a heavy duty Grade 1 keyed cylindrical lever lock with an interior indicator. For a low traffic interior door where a lever lockset is not required, lighter duty indicator hardware includes the Falcon D271, a medium duty Grade 2 deadbolt with an occupancy indicator and thumbturn inside, and the Cal-Royal IND84, a Grade 3 indicator deadbolt with a thumbturn by indicator function. Both are deadbolt-only devices, so the door still needs separate operating hardware to latch it.
20) Which indicator lock should I standardize on across a facility if I need one keying system and a lever on every door?
The Schlage ND53 is the one in this group that combines a lever, a keyed single cylinder and an interior LOCKED/UNLOCKED indicator in a single Grade 1 device, and it is offered with conventional 6-pin Schlage C keyway cylinders, Schlage FSIC prep less core, FSIC prep less core, or less cylinder, so it drops into an existing key system. The Grade 1 indicator alternatives are privacy functions - the Accentra AUYPL02 YPL Series and the Corbin Russwin CLX3320 NVSL - which take no cylinder and cannot be brought into a master key system. Facility-wide keyed standardization with a lever points to the ND53.
21) Will the Schlage ND53 match the other hardware in my building?
It suites visually with Von Duprin exit devices and other Schlage products, and it is keyed-suited to Schlage ALX Series Grade 2 locks, so you can run ND53 on the heavy traffic openings and ALX on secondary doors and keep the same look. Nine lever and four rose designs are offered across the ND Series; this indicator model is built in 626AM satin chrome antimicrobial.
