Schlage ND SERIES OVERVIEW

The Schlage ND Series offers a full breadth of commercial lock options with a suited combination of mechanical, electrified and electronic options. This overview covers common characteristics for the mechanical and electrified lock information.

Beyond grade 1 performance is the hallmark of the mechanical and electrified locks. ND Series locks are tested to withstand 3,100 in-lb. of abusive lever torque - more than 2 1/2 times the Grade 1 standard requirement. Offset lever pull testing up to 1,600 lbs. assures you of the lock's superb resistance against pry bar attacks. More than strong, ND Series is built to last and shows nearly zero droop or wobble after 16 million cycles.

All ND Series locks including electronic and ligature-resistant trim use the common cylindrical ANSI 161 door preparation making them easily interchangeable. They are ideal for all new construction and retrofit applications.

ND Series Mechanical Lock

The ND mechanical lock, along with being Schlage’s best selling mechanical lock, is the foundation for both the wired electrified and NDE wireless electronic lock. Not only did Schlage invent the cylindrical lock, but they continue to make it better with capabilities such as:

  • Unparalleled strength - the lock prevents access even when subjected to torque loads up to 3,100 in-lbs (2.6x BHMA1), withstands pry bar attacks of 1,600 lbs (8x BHMA requirements1), and withstands 100 hammer blows (20x BHMA requirements1, 2)
  • Exceptional durability - cycle tested to over 16M cycles (16x BHMA requirements1) with near zero droop or wobble - without the use of set screws or O-rings
  • Improved feel - improved strength and durability are more than numbers, you can actually feel it in the lock
  • Improved installation - installation is even easier than before (and withoutany set screws or O-rings)

Schlage ND50PD RHO 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Schlage ND50 fit my door, and what backset does it come with?
The ND50 is set up for a 1-3/4 inch door and ships with the 13-247 deadlatch on a 2-3/4 inch backset, square corner faceplate measuring 1-1/8 x 2-1/4 inches. That is the standard commercial bore and backset, so on a door already prepped for a cylindrical lock it drops straight in. It uses the common ANSI 161 cylindrical door prep, which is the same prep across the whole ND range.
2) How does the ND50 entrance/office function actually work day to day?
Push-button locking. Press the button on the inside and the outside lever locks; it stays locked until someone uses a key outside or turns the inside lever, which releases the button. The inside lever is always free, so anyone can get out without unlocking anything. That is ANSI F82, the office function people expect when they want to secure a room at the end of the day but leave it open during business hours.
3) Will the Schlage ND50 latch into the strike that is already in my frame?
It comes with the 10-025 ANSI strike, 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inches with a 1-3/16 inch lip and no box. If your frame already has an ANSI strike cut of that size, the new lock lands in it. If the existing prep is a smaller T-strike or a full lip box strike, plan on changing the strike or the frame prep, since the ANSI cutout is the larger of the two.
4) Is the ND50 handed, or do I need to specify left or right?
Non-handed. The same lock works on a left or right hand door, and the same lever, rose and finish go on both sides. Nothing to specify and nothing to field-reverse, which is why property managers can stock one part number for a whole building.
5) What cylinder option should I order on a Schlage ND50 if I already have a key system?
Six cylinder choices. PD is the conventional 6-pin cylinder in the Schlage C keyway, which is what you want if you have no existing system or you are already on C. If you run a small format interchangeable core, order JD (Schlage FSIC prep less core) or BD (FSIC prep less core) and drop in your own cores. RD ships FSIC prep with a core, TD ships FSIC prep with a construction core for a job still under way, and LD comes less cylinder entirely if the cylinders are coming from your own stock. Keying on the keyed cylinders is keyed different as standard, with keyed alike available.
6) Can I get several ND50 locks keyed alike so one key opens all of them?
Yes. Keyed different is the standard build, but keyed alike is an option when you order, so a suite of offices or a run of tenant doors can all take one key. Each keyed lock comes with two nickel silver cut keys. Note this is a single cylinder lock, keyed on the outside only.
7) Can the ND50 go on a fire rated door?
Yes. ND locks are UL and cUL listed for 3 hour A label single fire doors up to 4 feet by 10 feet, and for 8 by 8 foot pairs at 3 hours with the 3/4 inch latch option. Pairs up to 8 by 10 feet carry a 90 minute rating, again with the 3/4 inch latch. If your opening is a pair, specify the 3/4 inch latch rather than the standard latch.
8) Does the Schlage ND50 meet ADA and accessibility code for a school or healthcare facility?
It meets ADA requirements and complies with ICC A117.1 for accessible and usable buildings. It is certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.2 Series 4000 Grade 1, meets the Buy American Act, and meets federal FF-H-106C Series 161. For California, levers with a 1/2 inch or shorter return to the door comply, which covers the Rhodes, Sparta, Tubular, Omega, Longitude and Boardwalk lever styles.
9) What is the difference between the ND50 and the ND53, ND70 or ND80?
They are all the same chassis and the same ANSI 161 prep, only the function changes. ND50 (F82) is entrance/office with push-button locking that a key or the inside lever releases. ND53 (F109) is entrance, ND70 (F84) is classroom, and ND80 (F86) is storeroom, where the outside lever is always locked and the key retracts the latch. For a room that should sit unlocked during the day and get buttoned up at night, ND50 is the one. For a door that must never be left unlocked, use the ND80.
10) Can the ND50 replace an existing cylindrical lock without redrilling the door?
In most cases yes. Every ND lock, including the electronic and ligature resistant trim, uses the common cylindrical ANSI 161 door preparation, so it swaps into any door already bored to that standard. Confirm your door is 1-3/4 inches and the backset is 2-3/4 inches to match the supplied latch, and the change is a trim swap rather than a carpentry job.
11) Can I use non-Schlage cylinders in an ND50, like BEST or Corbin cores?
Yes. Three spring cage sets cover all Schlage formats plus eight competitive cylinder formats, so a facility standardized on another core can keep its key system. One caveat worth knowing: the beyond-Grade-1 numbers, the 3,100 in-lb torque and 1,600 lb pull figures, apply with Schlage conventional, FSIC and SFIC cylinders. With a non-Schlage cylinder the lock still exceeds BHMA Grade 1 requirements but performance may be below the Schlage-cylinder figures. Order the LD less cylinder option if you are supplying your own.
12) My doors are 1-3/8 inch, not 1-3/4. What keyed lever should I use instead?
Not the ND50, which is built for a 1-3/4 inch door. For thinner doors, the Dexter C1000 entry/office lever is Grade 1 and covers 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inches. Cal-Royal's AG00 entrance lever also covers 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inches with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway, so it keeps you on the same key system, though it is a 2-3/8 inch backset rather than 2-3/4.
13) What is the closest Grade 1 cylindrical entrance/office lever lock to the Schlage ND50 from another manufacturer?
The Dexter C1000 Series entry/office cylindrical lever lock is the nearest peer: it is a Grade 1 keyed cylindrical lever with an Entrance/Office function, the same duty class and function the ND50 carries as ANSI F82. The C1000 entry/office uses a clutching lever and covers doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch thick, while the ND50 is built around a 1-3/4 inch door with the 13-247 deadlatch on a 2-3/4 inch backset. Both are non-handed cylindrical chassis, so either drops into a standard bored opening.
14) The ND50 lets anyone lock the outside lever with the push button - what should I use instead where staff must not be able to leave the door unlocked?
For a door that has to stay locked outside at all times with free egress, look at a storeroom function instead of entrance/office. The Cal-Royal AG05 is a Grade 2 storeroom lever lockset with a deadlocking latchbolt for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch thick, and the Hager 2580 is a Grade 2 storeroom cylindrical lock with the Withnell lever for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch. The ND50 is the F82 entrance/office function, where the push button locks the outside lever until a key or the inside lever releases it - which is exactly the behavior a storeroom door is trying to avoid.
15) Can I key a Cal-Royal AG00 entrance lever to the same key as my Schlage ND50 offices?
Both run the Schlage C keyway family, so they can share a key system. The ND50 carries the S123 cylinder and keyway designation and is offered with the PD conventional 6-pin Schlage C keyway cylinder; the Cal-Royal AG00 is an entrance lever with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway supplied keyed different, on a 2-3/8 inch backset for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch. Note the backset difference - the ND50 standard latch is 2-3/4 inch, so the two are not prepped alike even though the key is.
16) What is the difference between the Schlage ND50 and a Dexter C1000 classroom lock - can I use one where the other is specified?
They are different functions. The ND50 is the F82 entrance/office function, where a push button locks the outside lever until a key or the inside lever releases it. The Dexter C1000 classroom is a Grade 1 keyed clutching cylindrical lever with a Classroom function, and the C1000 classroom security model is a separate Grade 1 Classroom Security lock - both cover doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch. A classroom door specified for key-only outside control is not satisfied by an entrance/office push button, which any occupant can set.
17) My architect specified a lever with a short return to the door for California fire code - does the ND50 work, and what else does?
Yes on the ND50: levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch or less comply, and that covers the Rhodes, Sparta, Tubular, Omega, Longitude and Boardwalk lever designs, all of which are offered on the ND50 as RHO, SPA, TLR, OME, LON and BRK. The ND50 is also UL/cUL listed for 3-hour A label single fire doors up to 4 feet by 10 feet. Among Grade 1 peers with a stated fire rating, the Corbin Russwin CL3110 and the Falcon K101 are both fire rated, though both are passage function rather than keyed.
18) Is a Grade 1 cylindrical lever worth it over a Grade 2 for a high traffic office corridor?
For a door that gets used all day, yes. The ND is Grade 1 heavy duty and tested well past the standard: 3,100 in-lb of abusive locked lever torque, 1,600 lbs of offset lever pull against pry bar attack, 100 vertical lever impacts, and 16 million cycles with near zero droop and no set screws or O-rings holding the lever up. Lever sag is what usually kills a lighter lock on a busy door. Grade 2 entrance/office alternatives we carry include the Falcon B511CP6D and the Hager 2525 entrance lock, which suit lower traffic openings.
19) Which lever styles and finishes does the Schlage ND50 come in?
Nine levers: Athens, Boardwalk, Broadway, Latitude, Longitude, Omega, Rhodes, Sparta and Tubular. Ten finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 626AM satin chrome antimicrobial and 643E aged bronze. If you are matching existing doors in a building, 626 satin chrome is the usual commercial standard. For a healthcare or food service corridor, 626AM is the antimicrobial version of the same finish.
20) Will the ND50 match the rest of my Schlage and Von Duprin hardware?
Trim suites with Von Duprin exit devices and other Schlage products, so the levers on your ND locks and the lever trim on your exit devices read as one set. The ND is also suited to the Schlage ALX Grade 2 locks, which lets you run Grade 1 on the heavy traffic openings and ALX on the lighter ones without the levers looking different.
21) What is a Vandlgard lever and do I need it on a school or public restroom door?
Vandlgard models have a lever that spins freely up and down when the lock is locked, so a kid hanging off it or someone forcing it transfers no load into the chassis. On corridor and public doors where levers get abused, that is the version to specify. The standard ND lock already resists 3,100 in-lb of locked lever torque, so on a normal office door you do not need it.
22) I need a keyed entrance/office lever but not a Grade 1 price point. What else is there?
The Falcon B511CP6D is a Grade 2 medium duty cylindrical lever with the same entrance/office function, which suits a lighter traffic interior door. The Cal-Royal AUS00 is a Grade 3 entrance/office lever with a solid brass forged body, rated for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors, so it also covers thinner older doors than the ND50, which is a 1-3/4 inch device. Dexter's C1000 entry/office is Grade 1 like the ND50 and covers 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors. The tradeoff going down in grade is cycle life and lever sag on a busy opening.
23) Can I get higher security keying on a Schlage ND50 for a door with drug storage or IT equipment behind it?
Yes. The ND accepts Primus XP cylinders, which are UL 437 listed, for high security locking with key control. Multiple key systems are available across the range: open, patented and restricted. For an opening that sensitive, also consider whether entrance/office is the right function at all, since the push-button can be left unlocked; a storeroom function like the ND80 keeps the outside lever locked at all times.
24) Does the ND50 hold up on an exterior door in a hurricane zone?
It complies with the Florida Building Code under ASTM E330, E1886 and E1996, and with Miami Dade TAS 201, 202 and 203 for hurricane requirements. That covers the lock itself; the opening still needs a rated door and frame assembly to make the whole thing count.
25) Is the ND50 an electronic or electrified lock, and can I add access control later?
The ND50 itself is mechanical, not electronic. If you need power at the door, the ND Series carries four electrified functions that auto-detect 12 or 24V DC, draw a maximum 0.4 amps with 0.1 amps holding current, and comply with ANSI/BHMA A156.25 for indoor use. Because every ND lock shares the ANSI 161 prep, you can start mechanical and change to an electrified or NDE wireless lock later without touching the door prep.
26) My door is 2 inches thick - the ND50 is built for a 1-3/4 inch door. What Grade 1 keyed lever covers a thicker door?
The ND50 default build is a 1-3/4 inch door. Where the leaf runs thicker, the Falcon K101 K Series covers 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch and is a Grade 1 heavy duty fire rated cylindrical lock, and the Corbin Russwin CL3100 Series covers 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch as a Grade 1 fire rated vandal resistant cylindrical lever. Both of those named models are passage function, so on a keyed opening they set the chassis range rather than replace the ND50 function directly - the Dexter C1000 asylum model spans 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch as a Grade 1 keyed cylindrical lock.
27) I have Yale hardware on the building and want to standardize on Schlage keys - do I have to replace the locks?
Not necessarily. The Accentra 107S is a Schlage cylinder adapter kit for Yale hardware, which lets Yale hardware accept a Schlage cylinder rather than being swapped out. The ND50 itself is a single cylinder keyed lever carrying the S123 keyway designation and is offered with the PD conventional 6-pin Schlage C keyway cylinder, so new ND50 openings and adapted Yale openings can be brought onto one Schlage key system.
28) I need a matching non-keyed lever for the corridor doors next to my ND50 offices - what pairs with it?
The ND Series itself carries the ND10 F75 passage and ND40 F76 privacy functions on the same common cylindrical ANSI 161 door preparation as the ND50, so trim and prep match across the run. If the non-keyed doors are being sourced separately, the Falcon K101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty non-handed passage cylindrical lock for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch, and the Design Hardware X75 is a Grade 1 flat lever passage lockset for a 1-3/4 inch door - both Grade 1 like the ND50, though the lever and rose designs will not match Schlage trim.
29) Is the Hager 2525 commercial entry lever an equivalent to the Schlage ND50?
They serve the same kind of opening but not at the same rating. The Hager 2525 is a Grade 2 commercial cylindrical entry lock with a lever handle for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch thick. The ND50 is Grade 1 heavy duty with the F82 entrance/office function. On a spec calling out Grade 1 cylindrical, the 2525 will not satisfy it; on a light commercial entry door where Grade 2 is acceptable, it covers the same function.
30) Which lever lock should I use if I want keypad access instead of a key on an office door?
The ND50 is a mechanical, non-electronic keyed lever with a single cylinder and two keys supplied. Where the office should open on a code instead, the Delaney LP250 is a Grade 2 electronic keypad leverlock, and the Lockey 1150 is a heavy duty mechanical keypad lever set with double combination for doors 1-1/8 inch to 2 inch - the Lockey needs no power. The Emtek Classic keypad leverset is a further keypad option in the Classic series.
31) Is a Kwikset Breton or Delta lever a substitute for a Schlage ND50 on a commercial office door?
No. The Kwikset 200BRNL Breton is a Grade 3 passage lever set for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, and the 200DL Delta is a passage door lock for interior hall and closet use with an adjustable 6AL latch and RCS strike. Both are passage - no key, no locking. The ND50 is a keyed Grade 1 commercial entrance/office lever with a single cylinder and two keys. Passage trim on an office door leaves it unlockable.
32) What Grade 1 keyed lever should I use on a behavioral health or utility room door instead of the ND50?
The Dexter C1000 Series asylum lock, ANSI F87, is a Grade 1 cylindrical lock with an Asylum/Institution/Utility function for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch thick. The Arrow MK33-BD-CS is a heavy duty asylum cylindrical lock with a ball knob and a conventional Schlage C keyway cylinder. The ND50 is the F82 entrance/office function with push-button locking and a free inside lever for immediate egress, which is not the key-both-sides control an asylum opening calls for.
33) What is the ND50 lock made of?
Zinc and steel construction, which is what carries the 1,600 lb offset lever pull and the 100 hammer blow resistance. It is a commercial lock, not a residential one, and the durability figures come from that chassis rather than from set screws or O-rings propping the lever up.
34) Can I order a BEST 9K dummy lever to match my ND50 openings on a door that does not latch?
The BEST 9K Series 1DT is a Grade 1 heavy duty non-keyed single dummy trim cylindrical lever, and the Accentra 455LN Augusta is a Grade 1 heavy duty single dummy cylindrical lever from the 5400 Series - both are the same grade as the ND50, which is Grade 1 heavy duty. A dummy has no chassis and no latch, so it does not use the 13-247 deadlatch or 10-025 strike the ND50 ships with; the lever and rose designs also will not match Schlage ND trim.
35) I want a residential-looking lever on an entry door rather than a commercial ND50 - what are the options?
The Deltana entry levers cover the decorative side: the 6201 Manchester, 6411 Morant and 6431 Linstead are all entry function for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch, and the 5851 Claremont is an entry lever in the Claremont series. The ND50 is a commercial lever with zinc and steel construction and ten finishes from bright brass through matte black and satin chrome antimicrobial - it is the choice where the door takes commercial traffic rather than where the trim needs to look residential.

    Robust and Secure Office Lock

Posted by Vaughn on Jun 27th 2024

I recently got the Schlage ND50 Entrance Office Lock, and it's really robust. It feels secure and is perfect for my office. The key turns a bit stiffly at first, but it loosens up with use. Highly recommend it!
