Schlage ND SERIES OVERVIEW

The Schlage ND Series offers a full breadth of commercial lock options with a suited combination of mechanical, electrified and electronic options. This overview covers common characteristics for the mechanical and electrified lock information.

Beyond grade 1 performance is the hallmark of the mechanical and electrified locks. ND Series locks are tested to withstand 3,100 in-lb. of abusive lever torque - more than 2 1/2 times the Grade 1 standard requirement. Offset lever pull testing up to 1,600 lbs. assures you of the lock's superb resistance against pry bar attacks. More than strong, ND Series is built to last and shows nearly zero droop or wobble after 16 million cycles.

All ND Series locks including electronic and ligature-resistant trim use the common cylindrical ANSI 161 door preparation making them easily interchangeable. They are ideal for all new construction and retrofit applications.

ND Series Mechanical Lock

The ND mechanical lock, along with being Schlage’s best selling mechanical lock, is the foundation for both the wired electrified and NDE wireless electronic lock. Not only did Schlage invent the cylindrical lock, but they continue to make it better with capabilities such as:

  • Unparalleled strength - the lock prevents access even when subjected to torque loads up to 3,100 in-lbs (2.6x BHMA1), withstands pry bar attacks of 1,600 lbs (8x BHMA requirements1), and withstands 100 hammer blows (20x BHMA requirements1, 2)
  • Exceptional durability - cycle tested to over 16M cycles (16x BHMA requirements1) with near zero droop or wobble - without the use of set screws or O-rings
  • Improved feel - improved strength and durability are more than numbers, you can actually feel it in the lock
  • Improved installation - installation is even easier than before (and withoutany set screws or O-rings)

FEATURES & BENEFITS

Schlage ND50LD RHO 626 RH IS-LOC – Frequently Asked Questions

1) How does the Schlage ND50 entrance/office lock actually work when someone pushes the button?
Push-button locking on the inside. Pressing the button locks the outside lever, and it stays locked until a key is used outside or the inside lever is turned. The inside lever is always free, so anyone in the room can get out without touching the button. That is the ANSI F82 entrance/office function, and on this version an indicator rose on the interior reads LOCKED or UNLOCKED so staff can see the state at a glance.
2) Will the Schlage ND50 drop into the prep from the old lockset I am replacing?
If the door is bored to standard cylindrical prep, yes. All ND Series locks, including the electronic and ligature-resistant trims, use the common ANSI 161 cylindrical door prep, so they interchange with one another and go into existing 161 prepped doors as well as new construction. The lock also meets Federal spec FF-H-106C Series 161. Standard latch is the 13-247 deadlatch on a 2-3/4 inch backset with a 1-1/8 x 2-1/4 inch square corner faceplate, so check that your existing latch bore matches that backset.
3) Do I have to specify handing on the ND50, and does it matter which way my door swings?
The lock chassis is non-handed, but you do pick Left Hand or Right Hand when ordering because of the indicator. The interior indicator rose has to read right side up on your door, so the hand you choose sets the indicator orientation. Determine the hand from the inside of the room the lock secures.
4) Can I get the Schlage ND50 keyed alike with the other locks in my building?
Yes. Keying is a required selection: KD keyed different is standard, KA keyed alike is there for running multiple locks on one key, and there is a None option if you are ordering less cylinder. If you already have a key system, there is a field to enter your key code so the locks come cut to it. Conventional cylinders ship with two nickel silver cut keys per lock in the Schlage C keyway.
5) We use small format interchangeable cores. Can I order the ND50 without a cylinder?
Four cylinder choices are offered: PD conventional 6-pin in the Schlage C keyway, JD Schlage FSIC prep less core, BD FSIC prep less core, and LD less cylinder entirely. If your locksmith stocks cores, order a less-core or less-cylinder option and install your own. The ND chassis uses three spring cage sets that support all Schlage cylinder formats plus eight competitive formats.
6) Is the Schlage ND50 approved for a fire rated door?
UL and cUL listed. All ND Series locks carry a 3 hour A label rating on a single fire door up to 4 ft by 10 ft, and 3 hour on pair doors up to 8 ft by 8 ft with the 3/4 inch latch option. Pair doors up to 8 ft by 10 ft are covered at 90 minutes, also with the 3/4 inch latch option. Note that on pairs you need the 3/4 inch latch, not the standard one.
7) Does the ND50 meet ADA and accessibility requirements for a public building?
It meets ADA requirements and complies with ICC A117.1 for accessible and usable buildings. It is also certified under ANSI/BHMA A156.2 Series 4000 Grade 1 and meets the Buy American Act, which matters on federal and public work. For California fire code, levers with a 1/2 inch or smaller return to door comply, and the Rhodes and Sparta levers offered here are on that list.
8) What is a lower-cost alternative to the Schlage ND50 entrance/office lever lock?
The Falcon B511CP6D is the closest step down in the same function. It is a cylindrical lever lock with an Entrance/Office function, but it is a Grade 2, medium duty chassis where the Schlage ND50 is a Grade 1 heavy duty lockset. For lighter-traffic interior offices the B511CP6D covers the same push-button entry/office use; for high-cycle openings the ND50 is the heavier chassis.
9) Is the Cal-Royal AUS00 the same thing as a Schlage ND50?
Both are entrance/office function lever locks, but they are not the same duty class. The Cal-Royal AUS00 is a Grade 3 entrance/office lever with a solid brass forged body and a 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch door thickness range. The Schlage ND50 is a Grade 1 heavy duty cylindrical lockset with a zinc and steel body. If the spec on the drawing calls for Grade 1, the AUS00 does not meet it.
10) I need a Grade 1 lever lock but the door does not need to lock at all - what do I use instead of the ND50?
The Schlage ND50 is a keyed entrance/office lock with a push-button that locks the outside lever. For an opening that only needs free operation both ways, the Falcon K101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty passage cylindrical lock with non-handed levers, fire rated, and fits doors 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch. The Corbin Russwin CL3110 is another Grade 1 passage/closet option, vandal resistant and fire rated, for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors.
11) The ND50 lets the inside lever unlock the outside lever - what should I order for a door that must stay locked outside at all times?
On the Schlage ND50, the push-button locks the outside lever and turning the inside lever releases it, which is not what you want on a stock or utility room. For always-locked outside trim, the Cal-Royal AG05 is a Grade 2 storeroom lever lockset with a deadlocking latchbolt for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Hager 2580 is a Grade 2 storeroom cylindrical lock with the Withnell lever for 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors.
12) What is the classroom equivalent if the ND50 entrance/office function is wrong for a school door?
The Schlage ND50 is the F82 entrance/office function. Within the same ND Series, the ND70 is the ANSI F84 classroom lock. Across brands, the Dexter C1000 is a Grade 1 classroom cylindrical lever lock with clutching, keyed, for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, and Dexter also offers a Grade 1 Classroom Security version. Cal-Royal's AG03 is a classroom lever in the AG Series with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway and 2-3/4 inch backset.
13) Can a Cal-Royal AG00 entrance lever replace a Schlage ND50 in an existing door?
Check the backset before you order. The Cal-Royal AG00 entrance lever is a 6-pin Schlage C keyway KD lock with a 2-3/8 inch backset for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors. The Schlage ND50 ships with the 13-247 deadlatch on a 2-3/4 inch backset for a 1-3/4 inch door. The keyway matches if you are keying to Schlage C, since the ND50 uses the S123 keyway family, but a 2-3/8 inch backset lock will not land on a 2-3/4 inch bore centerline without a different latch.
14) Is a strike included with the Schlage ND50, and will it work in my existing frame?
The standard strike is the 10-025 ANSI strike, 1-1/4 by 4-7/8 inches with a 1-3/16 inch lip length, no box. That is the ANSI 4-7/8 frame cutout, so if your frame is already prepped for an ANSI strike it lines up. Frames cut for a small T-strike will need modification or a different strike.
15) Should I use the ND50 entrance/office or the ND80 storeroom function on an office door?
Pick by who needs to control the lock. The ND50 lets the occupant lock the outside lever with a push button and unlock it from inside by turning the lever, which suits an office or a room staff lock behind them when they leave. The ND80 storeroom function (ANSI F86) keeps the outside lever locked at all times and requires a key every time, which is what you want on a supply or mechanical room where nobody should be able to leave it unlocked. ND70 classroom (F84) is the one keyed from outside only, with no inside button.
16) How tough is the ND50 for a high traffic door like a school or apartment corridor?
It goes well past Grade 1. Schlage tests the ND chassis to 3,100 in-lb of abusive locked lever torque, 2.6 times the BHMA requirement, 1,600 lbs of offset lever pull against pry bar attack, 8 times the requirement, and 100 vertical lever impacts. Cycle life is a minimum 16 million cycles with no visible lever sag, and it gets there with five points of engagement rather than set screws or O-rings, which are the parts that usually cause lever droop over time. Body is zinc and steel. Those beyond-Grade-1 numbers apply with Schlage cylinders.
17) What finishes and lever styles can I get on the Schlage ND50 so it matches the rest of my building?
Ten finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 626AM satin chrome antimicrobial, and 643E aged bronze. Four lever designs on this function: Athens, Latitude, Rhodes and Sparta. Both sides of the door get the same lever, rose and finish with matching latch and strike. The ND Series is finish and design suited to Schlage ALX Grade 2 locks and to Von Duprin exit devices, so you can carry one look across openings that need different hardware types. 626AM is worth a look for healthcare.
18) What is a cheaper entrance/office lever if I do not need Grade 1?
Two lighter options ZenSupply carries in the same function: the Falcon B511CP6D is a Grade 2 medium duty cylindrical entry/office lever, and the Cal-Royal AUS00 is a Grade 3 entrance/office lever with a solid brass forged body fitting 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors. Those suit low traffic or interior tenant doors. For a corridor, classroom or anything taking daily abuse, stay with the Grade 1 ND50, which is rated heavy duty.
19) The ND50 spec lists a 1-3/4 inch door - what Grade 1 lever works on thicker doors?
The Schlage ND50 is specified for a 1-3/4 inch door thickness. For thicker leaves, the Falcon K101 Grade 1 passage lock covers 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch, the Corbin Russwin CL3110 Grade 1 passage/closet covers 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch, and the Dexter C1000 asylum function Grade 1 covers 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch. Note those are passage and asylum functions, not entrance/office, so confirm the function still suits the opening.
20) Will a knob lock work in place of the ND50 lever, and what are the keyed knob options?
A knob changes the ADA picture, so confirm the code requirement first. The Schlage ND50 is a lever handle lock that meets ADA requirements. Among knob-style entrance locks, the Arrow HK11 is a turn-pushbutton entrance cylindrical lock with a ball knob and conventional cylinder for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors. Arrow also lists the MK33-BD-CS asylum function ball knob with a conventional cylinder in the Schlage C keyway.
21) We use Yale hardware but key everything to Schlage - does that affect choosing the ND50?
The Schlage ND50 accepts the S123 keyway family and is offered in a PD conventional 6-pin Schlage C keyway cylinder as well as BD and JD full-size interchangeable core preps less core. If you are keeping Yale locks elsewhere in the building on the same Schlage key system, the Accentra 107S is a Schlage cylinder adapter kit for Yale hardware, which lets those openings run the same keyway rather than forcing a second key system.
22) What matches the ND50 on the door pairs that only need dummy trim?
The Schlage ND50 is a keyed, non-handed cylindrical lockset. For an inactive leaf or a closet pair that needs a pull only, the BEST 9K Series 1DT is a Grade 1 heavy duty non-keyed single dummy trim cylindrical lever, and the BEST 7KC Series 1DT is the Grade 2 medium duty single dummy. Accentra's 455LN Augusta is a Grade 1 heavy duty single dummy cylindrical lever in the 5400 Series.
23) Is there a keypad option instead of a keyed ND50 for an office door?
The Schlage ND50 is a mechanical, non-electronic lock keyed to a cylinder with two keys supplied. If you want code entry rather than keys, the Delaney LP250 is a Grade 2 electronic keypad leverlock, and the Lockey 1150 is a heavy duty mechanical keypad lever set with double combination in a passage function for 1-1/8 inch to 2 inch doors. Emtek also offers a Classic keypad leverset.
24) What is the privacy-function counterpart to the ND50 for a restroom or bedroom door?
The Schlage ND50 entrance/office function unlocks from the inside lever, so it is not a privacy lock. Within the ND Series the ND40 is the ANSI F76 privacy lock. Across brands, the Hager 2540 Grade 2 privacy cylindrical lock with the Withnell lever fits 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors, the Arrow MK02-TA is a Grade 2 privacy cylindrical lock with a Tudor knob and non-keyed, and Kwikset's 300BRNL Breton is a Grade 3 privacy lever set for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors.
25) We need an electrified lever on one office door and mechanical ND50 locks on the rest - what pairs with that?
The Schlage ND50 is a mechanical lock, and the ND Series carries four electrified functions alongside the mechanical ones on the common ANSI 161 cylindrical prep, so an electrified ND drops into the same door prep. If you are specifying outside the series, the Corbin Russwin CL33903 is a Grade 1 fail safe electrified cylindrical lever at 12VAC/DC for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors, available with the NZ lever and D rose.
26) I need the same lever look on a door that does not need to lock. What matches the ND50?
Stay in the ND Series so the trim and finish match: ND10 is the ANSI F75 passage lock and ND40 is the ANSI F76 privacy lock, both non-keyed, and they use the same ANSI 161 prep and the same lever and rose designs. Mixing in another brand's passage lever will not match the rose profile.
27) Can the Schlage ND50 be used on exterior doors in a hurricane zone?
It complies with the Florida Building Code under ASTM E330, E1886 and E1996, and with Miami Dade TAS 201, 202 and 203 hurricane requirements. It is a commercial-rated lock, non-electronic, so there is no wiring or power to work around on an exterior opening.
28) For a residential-style entry lever, is a Deltana or Baldwin lever a substitute for the ND50?
They serve different openings. The Schlage ND50 is a commercial Grade 1 cylindrical lockset. The Deltana 6201 Manchester, 6411 Morant and 6431 Linstead are entry function levers for 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors, and Baldwin's Estate 5103 with the 5048 rose comes in passage, privacy and half dummy handed versions. Those are decorative entry and interior trim lines rather than commercial cylindrical chassis.
