Schlage ND53PD RHO 626 RH IS-LOC – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Schlage ND53 entrance lock fit my door, and what backset does it use?
The ND53 is built for a 1-3/4 inch door and ships with the 13-247 deadlatch on a 2-3/4 inch backset, with a 1-1/8 x 2-1/4 inch square corner faceplate. It uses the standard cylindrical ANSI 161 door prep, so it drops into an opening already bored for a commercial cylindrical lock. If your existing prep is a 2-3/8 inch backset, that's the residential-common dimension and this lock's standard latch won't reach.
2) What does the ND53 entrance function actually do at the door?
Two ways to lock it. Push the button in and the outside lever locks until someone turns the inside lever or uses a key. Push AND turn the button and the outside lever stays locked until the button is manually released, so a key is the only way in from the corridor side. The inside lever is always free, so egress is never blocked. That's ANSI/BHMA F109.
3) Will the ND53 strike work with my existing frame, or do I need to swap the strike?
The lock comes with the 10-025 ANSI strike, 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inches with a 1-3/16 inch lip, no box. If your frame is already prepped for a standard ANSI strike cutout, this drops straight in. Where the lip length matters is stop-to-edge distance on a deep frame or a stop that sits proud, the 1-3/16 inch lip is what you're matching against.
4) Do I have to specify handing when ordering a Schlage ND53?
The ND53 chassis is non-handed, but the lever itself is ordered left hand or right hand, so you do pick a hand on the order. Get the door swing right before you order and you avoid a return.

Note the pair door listings call for that 3/4 inch latch, which is not the standard 13-247 supplied by default.

If the door needs a keyed public restroom function instead of pure privacy, the Falcon H2171 is a Grade 2 interconnected lock with occupancy indicator and a single cylinder deadbolt.
10) Will the Schlage ND53 work on a 1-3/8 inch door?
No. The ND53 is specified at 1-3/4 inch door thickness, the standard commercial door. If the opening is a 1-3/8 inch door, which is common on older interior work, look at a lock rated for that range instead, such as the Accentra D292 indicator deadbolt at 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch or the Arrow E50 exit deadlock over the same range.
11) Can a thumbturn indicator deadbolt be used instead of a Schlage ND53 entrance lock?
They do different jobs on the door. On a drawing that names Grade 1, the Grade 2 and Grade 3 units will not answer the spec.
14) Which indicator hardware works on a 1-3/8 inch door, since the Schlage ND53 is set up for 1-3/4 inch?
The Schlage ND53 ships configured for a 1-3/4 inch door. For a thinner leaf, the Accentra D292 cylindrical deadbolt with thumbturn and indicator covers 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, and the Arrow E50 non-keyed exit deadlock with a Vacant/Occupied indicator outside covers the same 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch range. Both are Grade 2 deadbolts rather than Grade 1 lever locks, so they change the function on the door as well as the thickness they accept.
15) Should I use the ND53 entrance lock or the ND50 office lock for a tenant suite door?
Both are keyed entry, but the button behaves differently. ND53 is ANSI F109: push and turn the button and it stays locked until someone physically releases it, so the door stays secured after each use. ND50 is ANSI F82 entrance/office. If you want the door to relock every time someone leaves, F109's turn/push-button is the one. For a door that must never be lockable from inside, look at ND80 storeroom, ANSI F86, where the outside lever is always locked.
16) Can I match the ND53 to the levers and exit devices already on my other openings?

17) I want an indicator on the door but I already have a lever set. Do I have to replace the whole lock?
Not necessarily. The ND53 is a full cylindrical lever lock replacement, chassis and trim together. If the lever set on the door is fine and you just want status visible, an indicator deadbolt mounts above the existing lock instead. The Hager 3216 is a Grade 2 thumbturn by occupancy indicator deadbolt with a 1 inch throw for 1-3/4 inch doors and it's fire rated. 18) Does the Schlage ND53 need power or wiring run to the door?
No wiring. The ND53 is a mechanical lock, not electronic, so there is nothing to power, no transfer hinge and no low voltage run. It works the same when the building loses power. The ND Series does include four electrified functions if you need access control later, and because they share the ANSI 161 prep you can convert the same opening without redrilling.
19) Can I get the ND53 on a high security or restricted key system?
