Schlage ND SERIES OVERVIEW

The Schlage ND Series offers a full breadth of commercial lock options with a suited combination of mechanical, electrified and electronic options. This overview covers common characteristics for the mechanical and electrified lock information.

Beyond grade 1 performance is the hallmark of the mechanical and electrified locks. ND Series locks are tested to withstand 3,100 in-lb. of abusive lever torque - more than 2 1/2 times the Grade 1 standard requirement. Offset lever pull testing up to 1,600 lbs. assures you of the lock's superb resistance against pry bar attacks. More than strong, ND Series is built to last and shows nearly zero droop or wobble after 16 million cycles.

All ND Series locks including electronic and ligature-resistant trim use the common cylindrical ANSI 161 door preparation making them easily interchangeable. They are ideal for all new construction and retrofit applications.

ND Series Mechanical Lock

The ND mechanical lock, along with being Schlage’s best selling mechanical lock, is the foundation for both the wired electrified and NDE wireless electronic lock. Not only did Schlage invent the cylindrical lock, but we continue to make it better with capabilities such as:

  • Unparalleled strength - the lock prevents access even when subjected to torque loads up to 3,100 in-lbs (2.6x BHMA1), withstands pry bar attacks of 1,600 lbs (8x BHMA requirements1), and withstands 100 hammer blows (20x BHMA requirements1, 2)
  • Exceptional durability - cycle tested to over 16M cycles (16x BHMA requirements1) with near zero droop or wobble - without the use of set screws or O-rings
  • Improved feel - improved strength and durability are more than numbers, you can actually feel it in the lock
  • Improved installation - installation is even easier than before (and withoutany set screws or O-rings)

Schlage ND66PD RHO 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Schlage ND66 store lock work on a 1-3/4 inch commercial door?
The ND66 is built for a 1-3/4 inch door, which is the standard commercial thickness. It uses the common cylindrical ANSI 161 prep shared across the whole ND Series, so it drops into an opening already bored for an ND lock. Standard latch is the 13-247 deadlatch on a 2-3/4 inch backset with a 1-1/8 x 2-1/4 inch square corner faceplate. If your existing prep is a 2-3/8 inch backset, that is a different latch and the standard one will not reach the bore centerline.
2) What does the ND66 store lock function actually do when someone turns the key?
Key in either lever locks or unlocks both levers. That is the double cylinder store function: there is no thumbturn and no inside free egress override, so once it is locked, a key is required from either side to get through. That behavior is why Schlage flags double cylinder locks as a life safety hazard on residences and on any door used for egress. Use it on a storefront or stock door where the code official allows it, not on a required exit.
3) Do I have to order the Schlage ND66 handed left or right?
No handing to specify. The ND66 is non-handed, so the same lock goes on a left or right hand door and you are not stuck with the wrong part if the field measurement comes back reversed. The lever and rose design and finish are the same on both sides of the door.
4) Will the ND66 latch into the strike already in my frame?
Depends on the frame prep. The lock ships with the 10-025 ANSI strike, no box, 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inches with a 1-3/16 inch lip. If your frame is cut for a full ANSI 4-7/8 inch strike, it drops right in. A frame cut for a small T-strike or a round corner residential strike will need to be modified or the frame face patched. The 1-3/16 inch lip is measured from the frame face centerline, so check your stop-to-face dimension if the door is undercut or the frame has heavy applied stops.
5) Can I get a set of Schlage ND66 locks keyed alike for a building?
Yes. Keying is a required choice at order: keyed different is standard, or keyed alike when you want one key to run multiple locks. The standard cylinder is the P conventional 6-pin in the Schlage C keyway, and two nickel silver cut keys come with each lock. There is also a free text field on the order for special cylinder or keying requirements, which is where a master key bitting or a specific keyway request goes.
6) How do I order a Schlage ND66 for an existing small format interchangeable core system?
Order it less cylinder. Two options cover that: L (less cylinder) for a conventional prep, and J (less FSIC cylinder) when you are supplying a full size interchangeable core. Pick None on the keying axis when you go less cylinder, since we are not cutting keys for a core you already own. The ND chassis takes three spring cage sets that support all Schlage cylinder formats plus eight competitive formats, so an existing non-Schlage core system is usually workable. Note that the beyond Grade 1 torque and pull numbers are stated for Schlage cylinders; with another brand's cylinder the lock still exceeds BHMA Grade 1 but may not hit those figures.
7) Is the Schlage ND66 rated for a fire door?
UL and cUL listed for 3 hour A label single fire doors up to 4 ft x 10 ft, and 3 hour pair doors up to 8 ft x 8 ft with the 3/4 inch latch option. Pairs up to 8 ft x 10 ft carry a 90 minute rating, again with the 3/4 inch latch. Note the function itself: a double cylinder store lock on a fire door that is also a required exit is a code problem regardless of the listing, so the listing settles the door assembly question, not the egress question.
8) What is the difference between the ND66 store lock and a normal storeroom lever like the ND80?
Free egress. A standard storeroom function keeps the outside lever locked and the inside lever always free, so anyone inside walks out without a key. The ND66 store function locks and unlocks both levers from either key, which means a key is needed from inside too. That is what you want on a stock room or a secured storefront where you control who leaves through that door, and it is exactly what you do not want on any door in the means of egress. If you need the secure-outside, always-free-inside behavior, that is the ND80 ANSI F86 storeroom function instead.
9) I need a Grade 1 keyed lever but the ND66 store function is wrong for my egress door. What else is there?
For a door in the means of egress you want free inside egress, which the double cylinder store function does not give you. Within the Schlage ND Series, the ND80 ANSI F86 storeroom function locks the outside lever only, and the ND50 ANSI F82 entrance/office and ND70 ANSI F84 classroom functions cover the other common cases. If you are open on brand, the Dexter C1000 Series Grade 1 entry/office lever fits 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Corbin Russwin CL33903 is a Grade 1 fail safe electrified lever for 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors when the opening needs to unlock on power loss.
10) What is the closest Grade 1 storeroom lever lock to the Schlage ND66 from another manufacturer?
The ND66 is a Grade 1 cylindrical storeroom lever lock, non-handed, with a 13-247 deadlatch on a 2-3/4 inch backset. Among other heavy duty Grade 1 cylindrical lever locks, the Falcon T101 and Falcon K101 are Grade 1 heavy duty cylindrical lever locks, but both are passage function and non-keyed, so they do not hold a key-operated storeroom opening. The Dexter C1000 Entry/Office is Grade 1 and keyed with a 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch door thickness range, giving key control in the same duty class but with an entry/office rather than storeroom operation. For a keyed storeroom lever where Grade 2 is acceptable, the Cal-Royal AG05 and the Hager 2580 with Withnell lever are both Grade 2 storeroom lever locksets.
11) The door needs to stay unlocked and free-swinging - what should be used instead of the Schlage ND66?
The ND66 is a keyed storeroom lever, so it is the wrong function for an opening that stays free. For a Grade 1 passage lever in the same heavy duty class, the Falcon K101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty non-handed passage cylindrical lock fire rated for doors 1-3/8 to 2-1/4 inches thick, and the Falcon T101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty passage lever with pressure release technology. The Corbin Russwin CL3110 is a Grade 1 vandal resistant passage lever, fire rated, for 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors, and the Design Hardware X75 is a Grade 1 passage lever lockset with a flat lever for 1-3/4 inch doors.
12) Which lever locks work with a Schlage C keyway so they can be keyed into the same system as an ND66?
The ND66 uses the Schlage S123 cylinder and keyway family, supplied as a conventional 6-pin cylinder in the Schlage C keyway, keyed different as standard and available keyed alike across multiple locks. Two Cal-Royal levers are built on a 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different: the AG00 entrance lever on a 2-3/8 inch backset and the AG03 classroom lever on a 2-3/4 inch backset. The Arrow MK33-BD-CS asylum lock uses a conventional cylinder in the Schlage C keyway with a ball knob. The Accentra 107S is a Schlage cylinder adapter kit for Yale hardware, which is how a Schlage-keyed system reaches that trim.
13) Is there an electrified version of a Grade 1 cylindrical lever if the opening needs to release on a fire alarm?
The ND66 is a mechanical lock with no electronic operation. For a Grade 1 cylindrical lever that releases on power loss, the Corbin Russwin CL33903 is a Grade 1 fail safe electrified cylindrical lever running 12VAC/DC on doors 1-3/4 to 2 inches thick, offered with an NZ lever and D rose. That is the function to specify when the door must unlock on alarm; the ND66 storeroom function holds the outside lever locked regardless of building power.
14) The door is 2 inches thick - will an ND66 fit or is another lever needed?
The ND66 is specified for a 1-3/4 inch door. For thicker leaves, the Falcon K101 covers 1-3/8 to 2-1/4 inches and the Corbin Russwin CL3110 covers 1-3/4 to 2 inches, both Grade 1 passage function. The Hager 2580 storeroom lever covers 1-3/8 to 2 inches at Grade 2, and the Dexter C1000 Asylum is Grade 1 covering 1-3/8 to 2 inches. Confirm the leaf measurement before ordering, since function and door range have to be satisfied together.
15) What is the difference between the Schlage ND66 and an entrance or office function lever for a suite door?
The ND66 storeroom function means the key in either lever locks or unlocks both levers, so the outside lever is normally secured and staff need a key. An entrance or office function instead lets occupants lock and unlock from inside. The Dexter C1000 Entry/Office is a Grade 1 keyed clutching entry/office cylindrical lever for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors, the Falcon B511CP6D is a Grade 2 medium duty entry/office cylindrical lever, and the Hager 2525 is a Grade 2 commercial cylindrical entry lock with lever for 1-3/8 to 2 inch doors. Choose by who controls the locking, not by trim.
16) Is a Grade 1 lever lock like the Schlage ND66 worth it over a Grade 2 storeroom lever?
On a high traffic opening, yes. The ND66 is certified under ANSI/BHMA A156.2 Series 4000 Grade 1 and tested well past it: 3,100 in-lb of abusive locked lever torque, 1,600 lbs offset lever pull, 100 vertical lever impacts, and 16 million cycles with near zero lever droop and no set screws or O-rings holding it together. For a low traffic back office or a light commercial storeroom, a Grade 2 storeroom lever such as the Cal-Royal AG05 or the Hager 2580 with the Withnell lever does the same job for less lock. The Grade 1 chassis earns its place on doors that get cycled hundreds of times a day or that get abused.
17) Will a Schlage ND66 match the other Schlage levers and Von Duprin exit devices in my building?
It will. The ND Series suites with Von Duprin exit devices and other Schlage products, and it is aesthetically matched to the Schlage ALX Series Grade 2 locks, so you can run ND on the heavy openings and ALX on the light ones with the same lever look. Nine lever designs are offered here: Athens, Boardwalk, Broadway, Latitude, Longitude, Omega, Rhodes, Sparta and Tubular. Pick the one already on your other doors and the openings read as one set.
18) Which Schlage ND66 lever designs meet the California fire code return-to-door requirement?
Levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch (64 mm) or less comply, and Schlage names those as Rhodes, Sparta, Tubular, Omega, Longitude and Boardwalk. All six are orderable here. If you are specifying into a California job, stay on that list. The lock also meets ADA requirements and complies with ICC A117.1 for accessible and usable buildings.
19) Does the Schlage ND66 meet Buy American Act requirements for a government job?
It does. Schlage states the ND Series meets BAA (Buy American Act) and also meets Federal specification FF-H-106C Series 161. For a hurricane zone project, the series complies with Florida Building Code testing (ASTM E330, E1886, E1996) and Miami Dade TAS 201, 202 and 203.
20) Can the Schlage ND66 be ordered with high security keying or a restricted key system?
Yes. The ND chassis takes Primus XP UL 437 listed cylinders for high security applications, and Schlage offers open, patented and restricted key systems on the series. The default here is the P conventional 6-pin in the Schlage C keyway, keyed different. If you need Primus, a patented keyway, or bitting to an existing master system, put it in the special cylinder and keying requirements field on the order rather than taking the standard cylinder and repinning later.
21) Does the Schlage ND66 have an electrified or access control version?
Not this one. The ND66 is a mechanical lock, no electronics. The ND platform does carry four electrified functions that auto detect 12/24V DC and draw a maximum of 0.4 amps with 0.1 amps holding current, which is what keeps the lever from heating up, plus the NDE wireless electronic lock. Because all of them share the ANSI 161 prep, you can start with mechanical ND66 locks now and swap in an electrified or wireless ND later without touching the door.
22) Is there a lighter duty storeroom lever lock than the Schlage ND66 for a low traffic back-of-house door?
Yes. The ND66 is a Grade 1 heavy duty cylindrical storeroom lever. Where the traffic does not call for Grade 1, the Cal-Royal AG05 is a Grade 2 storeroom lever lockset with a deadlocking latchbolt covering doors 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inches thick, and the Hager 2580 with Withnell lever is a Grade 2 storeroom cylindrical lock covering 1-3/8 to 2 inch doors. Both keep the storeroom operation - key retracts the latch, outside lever stays locked - at a lighter cycle rating. The ND66 is specified for 1-3/4 inch doors.
23) What looks like a substitute for the Schlage ND66 but will not lock the door?
Several Grade 1 cylindrical levers share the ND66's chassis class and lever appearance but carry no cylinder. The BEST 9K Series 1DT is a Grade 1 heavy duty non-keyed single dummy trim lever - it does not operate a latch at all. The Accentra 455LN Augusta is a Grade 1 heavy duty single dummy cylindrical lever. The Falcon K101 and Falcon T101 are Grade 1 heavy duty passage levers, which retract a latch but have no key and never lock. The ND66 is keyed, ships with two keys per lock, and is the function that keeps the outside lever secured.
24) Can a keypad or code-entry lever replace a keyed ND66 so staff do not carry keys?
The ND66 is a mechanical keyed storeroom lever supplied with two keys per lock. Where credentials should be a code rather than a key, the Delaney LP250 is a Grade 2 electronic keypad leverlock, the Emtek Classic Keypad Leverset is a keypad lever in the Classic series, and the Lockey 1150 is a heavy duty mechanical keypad lever set with double combination in passage function for doors 1-1/8 to 2 inches thick. These change how the door is credentialed, not the Grade 1 cylindrical chassis the ND66 carries.
25) What should go on a restroom or patient room door instead of a storeroom lever like the ND66?
A storeroom function keeps the outside lever locked and needs a key, which is wrong for a room someone occupies. For privacy operation, the Arrow MK02-TA is a privacy cylindrical lock with Tudor knob, non-keyed and fire rated for 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors, the Hager 2540 is a Grade 2 privacy cylindrical lock with Withnell lever for 1-3/8 to 2 inch doors, and the Kwikset 300BRNL Breton is a Grade 3 privacy lever for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors. For a patient or holding room needing outside key control with no inside locking, the Dexter C1000 Asylum is Grade 1 for 1-3/8 to 2 inch doors.
26) Is there a Schlage ND66 finish that holds up in a healthcare or food service setting?
626AM Satin Chrome Antimicrobial is offered alongside the nine standard finishes: 605 Bright Brass, 606 Satin Brass, 612 Satin Bronze, 613 Oil Rubbed Bronze, 619 Satin Nickel, 622 Matte Black, 625 Bright Chrome, 626 Satin Chrome and 643E Aged Bronze. 626 Satin Chrome is the workhorse on commercial and institutional jobs; the AM version is the one to specify for patient rooms, clinics and kitchens where touch surfaces are part of the infection control spec.
27) What is the Schlage ND66 made of and will the lever sag over time?
Zinc and steel construction, rated heavy duty. Schlage holds the lever with five points of engagement rather than set screws or O-rings, and reports near zero droop and wobble after 16 million cycles of testing. Lever droop is the usual failure on a busy opening, so that is the number worth reading here.
28) Which lever lock suits a residential or light commercial opening where a Grade 1 ND66 is more than the job needs?
The ND66 is a commercial Grade 1 heavy duty lock in zinc and steel. For lighter openings, the Accentra 5301LN Augusta and 4601LN are Grade 2 passage cylindrical levers, the Arrow GL01 is a Grade 2 passage lever with Sierra lever for 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors, and the Design Hardware J75 is a Grade 2 flat lever passage lockset for 1-3/4 inch doors. At Grade 3, the Kwikset 200BRNL Breton passage and the Callan Asheville passage leverset cover interior residential doors. All of these are non-keyed passage rather than the keyed storeroom operation of the ND66.
29) Is a dummy lever an acceptable match to an ND66 for the inactive leaf of a pair?
A dummy provides trim only and does not latch, so it matches appearance rather than operation. In the same Grade 1 heavy duty class as the ND66, the BEST 9K Series 1DT single dummy trim lever and the Accentra 455LN Augusta single dummy are Grade 1 heavy duty. Lighter options are the BEST 7KC single dummy trim at Grade 2 medium duty and the Callan Bentley Grade 2 dummy lever. Baldwin Estate 5103 half dummies come handed, left hand and right hand as separate parts, while the ND66 itself is non-handed.
