Schlage ND SERIES OVERVIEW

The Schlage ND Series offers a full breadth of commercial lock options with a suited combination of mechanical, electrified and electronic options. This overview covers common characteristics for the mechanical and electrified lock information.

Beyond grade 1 performance is the hallmark of the mechanical and electrified locks. ND Series locks are tested to withstand 3,100 in-lb. of abusive lever torque - more than 2 1/2 times the Grade 1 standard requirement. Offset lever pull testing up to 1,600 lbs. assures you of the lock's superb resistance against pry bar attacks. More than strong, ND Series is built to last and shows nearly zero droop or wobble after 16 million cycles.

All ND Series locks including electronic and ligature-resistant trim use the common cylindrical ANSI 161 door preparation making them easily interchangeable. They are ideal for all new construction and retrofit applications.

ND Series Mechanical Lock

The ND mechanical lock, along with being Schlage’s best selling mechanical lock, is the foundation for both the wired electrified and NDE wireless electronic lock. Not only did Schlage invent the cylindrical lock, but they continue to make it better with capabilities such as:

  • Unparalleled strength - the lock prevents access even when subjected to torque loads up to 3,100 in-lbs (2.6x BHMA1), withstands pry bar attacks of 1,600 lbs (8x BHMA requirements1), and withstands 100 hammer blows (20x BHMA requirements1, 2)
  • Exceptional durability - cycle tested to over 16M cycles (16x BHMA requirements1) with near zero droop or wobble - without the use of set screws or O-rings
  • Improved feel - improved strength and durability are more than numbers, you can actually feel it in the lock
  • Improved installation - installation is even easier than before (and withoutany set screws or O-rings)

Schlage ND85PD RHO 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) How does the Schlage ND85 faculty restroom lock actually work from each side of the door?
The outside lever on the ND85 stays fixed at all times, so entry is by key only. On the inside, a pushbutton in the lever throws a visual occupancy indicator, and once it is thrown only an emergency master key will operate the lock from outside. Turning the inside lever or closing the door releases the indicator. The inside lever is always free, so anyone in the room can walk out without touching the button or a key. Rotating the inside spinner-button with a spanner key holds the indicator thrown for a lock-out.
2) Will the Schlage ND85 fit my existing door prep, or do I need to re-bore?
The ND85 uses the common cylindrical ANSI 161 door preparation shared across the whole ND Series, so it drops into a standard commercial cylindrical prep with no re-bore. It ships with the 13-247 deadlatch on a 2-3/4 inch backset with a 1-1/8 x 2-1/4 inch square corner faceplate, and the 10-025 ANSI strike, 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inches with a 1-3/16 inch lip. Doors are 1-3/4 inches. If your existing prep is a 2-3/8 inch backset, that latch will not reach, so specify the backset when you order.
3) Is the ND85 handed? I need to order for both a left and a right hand door.
No handing to figure out. The ND85 is non-handed, so one part number covers left and right hand openings and you can stock a single lock for a whole floor of restrooms.
4) Can I put a Schlage ND85 on a labeled fire door?
Yes. All ND Series locks are UL/cUL listed for 3-hour A label single fire doors up to 4 ft x 10 ft, and for 8 ft x 8 ft pairs at 3 hours or 8 ft x 10 ft pairs at 90 minutes with the 3/4 inch latch option. The 3/4 inch latch is a specified option, so call it out on the order if the opening is a pair.
5) Does the ND85 restroom lock meet ADA and accessibility requirements?
Meets ADA, and it complies with ICC A117.1 for accessible and usable buildings. For the California fire code, any lever with a return to door of 1/2 inch or less complies, which covers the Rhodes, Sparta, Tubular, Omega, Longitude and Boardwalk lever designs. It also meets the Buy American Act and Federal FF-H-106C Series 161, which matters on government work.
6) What keyway does the Schlage ND85 come with, and can I get it keyed into my existing system?
Ordered with the P conventional cylinder, the ND85 is a 6-pin Schlage C keyway, single cylinder, and two nickel silver cut keys come with each lock. Standard keying is keyed different; keyed alike is available when you are doing a run of restrooms that should share a key. There is also an L option, less conventional cylinder, if you are supplying your own cylinders or running an interchangeable core program. Special keying instructions can be submitted with the order.
7) What is the ANSI function number for the ND85, and is it the right lock for a single-occupancy staff restroom?
The ND85 is ANSI/BHMA function F93. That is the faculty/hotel/restroom function: key entry from outside, an occupancy indicator driven by a button in the inside lever, and free egress inside. It is the right choice for a single-occupancy staff or faculty restroom where staff need to see at a glance whether the room is in use and management still needs key override. For a public multi-stall restroom that only needs to be locked at night, a storeroom function like the ND80 (ANSI F86) is the simpler pick.
8) What is the closest Grade 1 cylindrical alternative to a Schlage ND85 faculty restroom lock for an institutional door?
The Schlage ND85 is a Grade 1 cylindrical keyed lever with the Faculty/Hotel/Restroom function - outside lever fixed, entry by key only, with a pushbutton in the inside lever that throws a visual occupancy indicator. Among Grade 1 cylindrical peers, the Dexter C1000 Series Asylum (F87) lock, DEX-C1000-ASYL, is the nearest institutional-function match, covering doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch thick. The Dexter is an asylum/institution/utility function rather than a restroom-indicator function, so it locks both sides by key without the occupancy indicator - specify it only where the indicator is not part of the requirement.
9) I am standardizing a facility on Schlage C keyway. Which non-Schlage locks key into the same system as an ND85?
The ND85 uses the S123 cylinder and keyway family and is offered with a conventional 6-pin cylinder in the C keyway, or less cylinder for shops supplying their own. Peers built for the same keyway include the Cal-Royal AG00 entrance lever with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different on a 2-3/8 inch backset, the Cal-Royal AG03 classroom lever with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different on a 2-3/4 inch backset, and the Arrow MK33-BD-CS asylum lock with a conventional cylinder in the Schlage C keyway. Note the ND85 ships with a 2-3/4 inch backset deadlatch, so the AG00 at 2-3/8 inch prepares to a different bore centerline.
10) What is the difference between the ND85 and a classroom or classroom security lever?
The ND85 secures the outside lever permanently and gives the restroom an occupancy indicator that only an emergency master key overrides, with the inside lever always free for egress. A classroom lever is keyed from the outside to lock and unlock the outside lever for teaching use - the Dexter C1000 Classroom, Grade 1 clutching and keyed for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, or the Cal-Royal AG03 classroom lever on a 2-3/4 inch backset in the Schlage C keyway. Where the teacher needs to lock the door from inside, the Dexter C1000 Classroom Security, Grade 1 clutching and keyed over the same thickness range, adds an inside cylinder. Same bore, different intent.
11) Is the Schlage ND85 heavy duty enough for a high-traffic school or hospital restroom?
Grade 1, heavy duty, and tested well past the grade. The ND Series holds against 3,100 in-lb of abusive lever torque without granting access, resists 1,600 lbs of offset lever pull, takes 100 vertical lever impacts, and runs to 16 million cycles with near zero droop or wobble and no set screws or O-rings holding it together. Certification is ANSI/BHMA A156.2 Series 4000, Grade 1. Body materials are zinc and steel. Note that the beyond-Grade-1 numbers apply with Schlage cylinders; with non-Schlage cylinders it still exceeds BHMA Grade 1.
12) Can I match the ND85 restroom lock to the levers and finishes already on the rest of my building?
Nine lever designs are offered on the ND85: Athens, Boardwalk, Broadway, Latitude, Longitude, Omega, Rhodes, Sparta and Tubular. Finishes run to ten: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 626AM satin chrome antimicrobial, and 643E aged bronze. Both sides of the door get the same lever, rose and finish. The ND also suites with Von Duprin exit devices and pairs with Schlage ALX Grade 2 locks where a lighter-duty opening does not need Grade 1.
13) I have non-Schlage cylinders in my building. Can the ND85 take them?
Three spring cage sets are offered across the ND Series, supporting all Schlage formats plus eight competitive cylinder formats. Order the ND85 with the L option, less conventional cylinder, and fit your own. Be aware the beyond-Grade-1 torque and pull numbers are stated for Schlage cylinders (conventional, FSIC and SFIC); with a competitive cylinder the lock still exceeds BHMA Grade 1 but the published performance figures do not carry over.
14) What is the difference between the ND85 and a privacy lock for a restroom door?
A privacy lock like the ND40 (ANSI F76) locks from inside with a button or turn and is released with a small emergency tool, with no keyed cylinder. The ND85 adds a real keyed cylinder outside, so the outside lever is always fixed and staff enter with a key, plus the visual occupancy indicator that only the emergency master key overrides once thrown. Use privacy where anyone should be able to walk in when it is unoccupied; use the ND85 where the restroom is restricted to staff or guests and management needs key control.
15) Are there Grade 1 cylindrical lever alternatives to the Schlage ND85 for a restroom or institutional opening?
Within the same Grade 1 cylindrical lever class, ZenSupply carries the Dexter C1000 Series in an Asylum F87 function rated for 1-3/8 to 2 inch doors, and Corbin Russwin's CL3100 Series for 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors. Neither is listed at the F93 faculty restroom function the ND85 carries, so if the occupancy indicator is the reason you are buying, the ND85 is the one that does it. If you only need a keyed restricted restroom without the indicator, a storeroom function such as the Hager 2580 with the Withnell lever (Grade 2, 1-3/8 to 2 inch doors) is a lighter-duty route.
16) What should I use instead of an ND85 on a restroom door that does not need key entry?
The ND85 is a keyed single-cylinder lock - entry is by key only from the outside. If the restroom door only needs to be secured from inside with no key override at the outside lever, a non-keyed privacy function covers it: the Arrow MK02-TA is a privacy/bed/bath function cylindrical lock with a Tudor knob, fire rated, for doors 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch. The Hager 2540 with the Withnell lever is another cylindrical option for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch. Both give a knob or lever without the ND85's occupancy indicator and emergency master key arrangement.
17) Is a Grade 2 storeroom lever a workable substitute for a Schlage ND85 on a hotel or restroom door?
They lock differently. The ND85 is a Grade 1 lock whose outside lever is fixed with entry by key only and whose inside lever pushbutton throws a visual occupancy indicator that the emergency master key can override. A storeroom lever such as the Cal-Royal AG05, Grade 2, storeroom function with a deadlocking latchbolt for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, or the Hager 2580 with the Withnell lever, Grade 2 storeroom for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch, keeps the outside lever locked and entry by key, but has no occupancy indicator and no lock-out feature at the inside lever. For a restroom where staff need to see occupancy from the corridor, the storeroom function does not do the same job.
18) What Grade 1 lever lock do I pair with an ND85 on the non-secured doors of the same corridor?
The ND85 is a heavy duty Grade 1 cylindrical lever lock. To hold the same grade on doors that need no locking, the Falcon K101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty passage cylindrical lock with non-handed levers, fire rated, for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch; the Falcon T101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty passage lever with pressure release technology; and the Corbin Russwin CL3110 is a Grade 1 vandal resistant passage/closet lever, fire rated, for doors 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch. For a dummy trim on an inactive leaf, the BEST 9K Series 1DT is Grade 1 heavy duty non-keyed. The ND85 itself is non-handed, as is the Falcon K101.
19) Can I put an ND85 on a 2 inch thick door?
The Schlage ND85 is built for a 1-3/4 inch door with the 13-247 deadlatch on a 2-3/4 inch backset and the 10-025 ANSI strike, 1-1/4 inch by 4-7/8 inch with a 1-3/16 inch lip. Where the opening runs thicker, Grade 1 cylindrical peers rated past 1-3/4 inch include the Falcon K101 passage at 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch, the Corbin Russwin CL3110 passage/closet at 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch, and the Dexter C1000 Asylum at 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch. Those cover different functions than the faculty restroom function, so match the function before the thickness.
20) Is a Kwikset or Baldwin lever an acceptable replacement for a Schlage ND85 in a commercial restroom?
No - those are different classes of product. The ND85 is a commercial, heavy duty, Grade 1 keyed cylindrical lever in zinc and steel. The Kwikset 200BRNL Breton passage lever is Grade 3 for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch and the Kwikset 300BRNL Breton privacy lever is Grade 3 over the same thickness range; the Baldwin Estate 5103 is offered as a passage, privacy or half dummy lever with the 5048 rose. None of them carry a keyed faculty restroom function or a Grade 1 rating, so they suit residential and light traffic openings rather than a keyed commercial restroom.
21) What Grade 1 keyed lever should I specify for an office or entry door when the restroom indicator function is not needed?
The ND85 is the keyed lever with the faculty restroom occupancy indicator; for an office or entry opening at the same grade, the Dexter C1000 Entry/Office is a Grade 1 clutching keyed cylindrical lever for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch. Falcon B511CP6D covers the same entry/office function as a Grade 2 medium duty cylindrical lever, and Hager 2525 is a Grade 2 commercial cylindrical entry lock with a lever for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch. The Dexter holds the Grade 1 heavy duty level the ND85 is specified at.
22) Does an electronic keypad lever do the same job as a Schlage ND85 on a staff restroom?
They control access differently. The ND85 is a mechanical, non-electronic lock: key entry at the outside lever, and a mechanical pushbutton indicator inside. A Delaney LP250 electronic keypad leverlock or an Emtek Classic keypad leverset opens on a code instead of a key, and the Lockey 1150 is a heavy duty mechanical keypad lever set with a double combination for doors 1-1/8 inch to 2 inch. None of the three provides the occupancy indicator or the emergency master key override that defines the ND85 restroom function, so they substitute on access control, not on the restroom behavior.
23) Is there an antimicrobial finish option on the Schlage ND85 for a healthcare restroom?
Yes, 626AM satin chrome antimicrobial is one of the finish choices on the ND85, alongside standard 626 satin chrome. It is the same lock and function underneath, so a hospital or clinic can specify the antimicrobial lever surface without changing the F93 restroom function or the ANSI 161 prep.
24) Does the ND85 need power or wiring?
No power, no wiring. The ND85 is a purely mechanical cylindrical lock, so it keeps working through an outage and needs no low-voltage run to the frame. Schlage does offer electrified functions in the ND Series that auto-detect 12/24V DC, but the ND85 restroom function is not one of them.
25) Will the Schlage ND85 hold up on a coastal or hurricane-code building?
The ND Series complies with the Florida Building Code under ASTM E330, E1886 and E1996, and with Miami Dade TAS 201, 202 and 203 hurricane requirements. That covers the ND85 for openings in those jurisdictions.
26) Which peers match the ND85 on grade but not on duty level, and does it matter for a high traffic restroom?
The ND85 is Grade 1 and heavy duty. Among the cylindrical lever peers, BEST 9K Series 1DT is Grade 1 heavy duty, and Falcon K101 and T101 are both Grade 1 heavy duty. Stepping down, the BEST 7KC Series dummy trim is Grade 2 medium duty, and Falcon B101 passage and B511CP6D entry/office are Grade 2 medium duty. On a restroom that cycles constantly, the heavy duty Grade 1 group is the like-for-like set; the medium duty Grade 2 group is built to a lighter cycle expectation.
27) I need a lever that looks like the ND85 on a door that takes no lock at all. What matches?
The ND85 is supplied with the same lever, rose and finish on both sides of the door and comes in nine lever designs including Rhodes, Sparta, Athens, Boardwalk, Broadway, Latitude, Longitude, Omega and Tubular, across ten finishes. On an inactive leaf or a closet that needs trim only, the BEST 9K Series 1DT single dummy trim is a Grade 1 heavy duty non-keyed cylindrical lever, and the Accentra 455LN Augusta is a Grade 1 heavy duty single dummy cylindrical lever from the 5400 Series. Both are dummy function, so they mount trim without a latch.
